Koi Ahoy It’s all about the fish

The June 24 Meeting is at the Garbero Pond The address is 5865 Shepard Ave. (Close to Sac State) George dug this pond by himself with a spoon and a pocket knife. (Maybe not) He did, if fact, build the pond and very effective filter system himself. Especially impressive is the stonework made from concrete, a reflection of George’s artistic abilities. There’s lots of shade so bring a chair and relax. This Month in the Pond It’s officially summer. Things should be settling down in our ponds. I’ve had a lot of people tell me that their ponds are still a little murky or have an algae bloom. Those kinds of problem should have resolved themselves by now. If not, you should look into a solution of your own. Don’t neglect testing the waters. Also test your tap water for pH & KH, and maybe even chlorine and nitrates. Ever since the drought strange things have been known to come out of our hoses. If your pond has settled into summer gracefully, you need only test once a month. If your still having water issues, test weekly or even every other day. .

Meet Carl Huppert, Your New Treasurer Carl & Nicole Huppert Have been members for a few years now. Carl stepped up to volunteer as Treasurer at the May meeting. In keeping with our bylaws, the board appointed him to the position. Carl has just finished building his new (second) pond at his Sacramento (Riverside) home. We can look forward to seeing it in the future.

The May Meeting at Jean Jahr’s Pond’s My description of Jean’s ponds in the last issue was a little off. It’s not two ponds tandemed together. It’s two ponds close together but separate. They only look like they could feed into each other. Each one has its’ own cleverly hidden pump and bead filter. She even has a solar backup panel.

CKC Report to AKCA June 2018

by Jerold Kyle AKCA Club Rep Members were provided lists of Why To

Belong To AKCA as found on AKCA website

and unanimously agreed it is the place to be.

Sam & Bob reported members joined together

to clean and organize the two club trailers full

of show tanks and equipment to make things

easier come show time. Plans in place for an

even better Koi Show this Labor Day Weekend

with AKCA Judges as more people continue to

join our club. Still going to be FREE to public

as we reach out to show the community what

we are all about. Some members planning to

attend Annual Meeting and & KHA Wet Lab in

San Diego. Aug meeting will have Koi Sale as

we look for homes for Koi our club (Sam?) has

rescued. Much to do and much to enjoy in the

Koi hobby helps make life good in northern

California.

Jerry & Phyllis Kyle at the raffle booth of A Taste of Excellence, 2017. Cool as cucumbers.

Hero Dog I obtained a 20” Showa late one day. Got her into the pond around 9pm. Everything was fine so I put Pondo in his crate and went to bed around 10pm. Around 3:30am Pondo began to whine, enough that I thought he was sick, so I got up and let him out. I watched from the back door and he seemed to just be fooling around, so I called him back in. He went right back out again, back to the same place. This time I went out to see and there on the lawn was the new koi, motionless except for the gasping. Picked her up and held her in the pond for a few seconds and she swam away like nothing happened. I love my dog.

Barracudas, Submarines, & Footballs It’s been a while since I’ve mentioned my disclaimer, so I’ll re-iterate. All of the stuff you read in your Koi Ahoy, that’s un-signed, is ramblings from me, your editor Bob Haugland. While I try to be as accurate and factual as I can, some of it may just be my opinion. I also sometimes like to remind people to not take my word for anything, to get other opinions and do more research. Be careful about what you read from the interweb sources. “A wise man seeks many counselors.” What do barracudas have to do with koi husbandry? Nothing I suppose. Summer is the start of the growing season for your koi. Adolescent fish can grow as much as one inch per month in the right conditions. Very young koi can have all sorts of shapes, but somewhere around two years old, or about 12+ inches, you should be able to see “conformation” of the fishes’ soon-to-be adult shape. In my KHA visits I see some koi that are shaped like barracudas; not good. Koi should be shaped more like a submarine, or a large mouthed bass, or a tuna. They should have a blunt nose, be broad at the shoulders, have a thick tail tube, and be muscular and powerful looking. Obesity and anorexia are a thing with koi. At the right is Little Orphan Andy. Andy was a 24” koi that weighed less than three pounds. Shaped like a barracuda. Below is Copper, a chubby football koi. The kohaku is a show fish that is a good example of what a mature koi should be shaped like.

Very few of us have champion koi, but that should be our aim: perfect fish. After all, if you aim for nothing, you’ll hit it every time. Feeding, water change outs, oxygen rates, etc.all have an impact on growth and conformation. Now that it’s summer you can have a big influence on the growth of your fish. If you notice more than one barracuda in your pond, you can step up the feeding regimen. You should be able to notice a change within 2-3 weeks. As for the football, only isolating him to a ‘diet tank’ would cause him to lose weight. I wouldn’t bother. These guys have great personalities, they eat out of your hand, and they’re the first topic of conversation. Every pond of a dozen or more fish has at least one barracuda and one football, and that’s normal. Too many of either may be cause for concern.

Camellia Koi Club Bylaws Change One of the big items of business at the June 24 meeting will be to vote on the approval of the proposed bylaws update that the board has been working on for the past few months. The bylaws have been sent as a separate attachment with your Koi Ahoy. Please read them over before attending the June meeting so that you are familiar with what you are going to be voting on. No proxies are allowed. You must be present to vote. Changes/additions are in red, and items to be deleted are lined out and in blue. Approval would change the last amendment date to June 24, 2018.
