On Friday 24th April we held our combined schools ANZAC Ceremony with the students from St Bernard‟s. The hosts for

the ceremony were Clancy Norrish and Lucy Johnston. Darcy O‟Halloran, Harry Parker and Chanel Bowey each read their own piece of work based on the ANZACs. Crystal Howell read the Prayer of Remembrance. Our special guest Mr Graham Pember spoke about The Meaning of the Bugle Calls and recited a poem called “Daddy‟s Poem”; we would like to thank Mr Pember for his participation in our ANZAC Service. Crystal Howell and Callum Bolwell recited the poem „We‟re all Australians Now‟ by Banjo Patterson. This was followed by the wreath laying ceremony with Mia Noanoa, Amelia Venn, William Sibley and John Henry Blair. Callum Bolwell read The Ode, Taj Ramsden was responsible for the flag raising. At the conclusion of the ceremony special guests, parents, staff and student leaders were invited to a delicious morning tea which was prepared by the Year 9/10 International Food Class. We would like to thank Miss McIvor for organising this event, to our special guests and parents that attended and to Mrs Helen Marsh for the beautiful wreath. Clancy Norrish and Lucy Johnston Year 6

ALBANY ANZAC 100 YEAR COMMEMORATION SERVICE

On Friday 24

th April, students from Years 7 – 10, who were in good standing, attended a combined schools Centenary

ANZAC Service and Parade in Albany. Kojonup joined 32 other schools from Albany and the surrounding region to take part in this event. The event marked 100 years since the ANZAC troops landed in Gallipoli. All the students lined up at the top of York Street, where we all marched proudly down to the ANZAC Peace Park, with Ben Chambers, Jordan Ladyman-Palmer and I leading our school. As we walked down York Street, there were people on either side of the street, clapping and cheering as all the schools walked down. I heard so many people from the crowd yell out “Oh look, it‟s Kojonup!” Once all the schools arrived at the Peace Park and were seated, we sat through a service which was run by the students. There were students reading poems, speeches that explained and described the war and songs sung by a choir and a student from Albany Senior High School played the last post. Ben and I were lucky enough to have the opportunity to represent KDHS and lay a wreath. It was a privilege to have that opportunity, seeing how big the event actually was – making it on the news. Once the ceremony had concluded, we walked up to Hungry Jacks and KFC where we had lunch, then we headed out to Laser tag to finish off the day. Overall it was a great experience that I personally, and I am sure I can speak on behalf of all the students that went, won‟t forget. We would like to thank Mrs Jan Norrish for the beautiful wreath. Sophie Clarke Year 10

KOJONUP ANZAC SERVICE

th April our school leaders Sophie Clarke and William Collins laid a wreath at the Kojonup ANZAC

Service; thank you to Mrs Jan Norrish for this beautiful wreath.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL – Peter Callaghan Welcome to the first Newsletter for the new Term. As we start a new term we also see the start of a new season – Autumn is definitely here as the smoke haze hanging in town of an evening can attest! I hope preparations for seeding are well in hand and that further rain is just around the corner. ANZAC As everyone will know, last week saw the recognition of the Centenary of Anzac and the Gallipoli landings. Kojonup DHS recognised this significant event in two ways. Firstly we sent almost all of our secondary students to Albany to be part of a 2000 plus group of school children who marched down York Street and then attended a ceremony in the Anzac Peace Park. Secondly, we hosted an event at school in which we combined with St Bernard ‟s to host members of our community and all of our primary students. In both events our students acquitted themselves with dignity and maturity and were indeed a credit to our school and to their parents. For those who attended here at school we ended the ceremony with a morning tea catered for by the secondary cooking students. MEETINGS Last Thursday afternoon was the time for secondary parent/teacher meetings and this was a very well attended event. I was pleased to see so many parents where, I hope it has helped either answer questions or to strengthen relationships with those who teach your children – thank you for making the time. NAPLAN This annual national assessment process is about to start once again in Week 4 – 11

th May to 15

th May – all students in

Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will sit a series of tests in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy. Putting to one side the philosophical objections that many people have to the notion of national testing and the emphasis placed on one single test – the data which we receive back from these tests is extremely helpful in checking that we are on track and effectively using the time we spend with your children. In this school the NAPLAN data is used to identify weakness and to suggest areas for improvement and it is reviewed and analysed very carefully. NAPLAN is the measure through which governments, education authorities, schools, teachers and parents can determine whether or not young Australians have the literacy and numeracy skills and knowledge that provide the critical foundation for other learning and for their productive and rewarding participation in the community. The tests provide parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. They also provide schools, states and territories with information about how education programs are working and which areas need to be prioritised for improvement. NAPLAN tests are one aspect of each school‟s assessment and reporting process, and do not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student‟s performance. The results from this round of assessments will be back with us for the start of Term 4 and individual student reports will be issued from Canberra before the end of the year. Thank you to those parents who contacted the school recently to alert us to a problem related to illegal drugs. I would like to assure you that this matter has now been dealt with by police, and consequences have been imposed from the school also. This was a one-off matter and not a usual occurrence for the school. Kojonup DHS, like all schools, maintains a zero tolerance to drug related matters and this is clearly stated in our current Drug Policy. Another section of our policy document states that we will work with SDERA (School Drug Education and Road Awareness) and I made contact with the Albany representative of this department on Wednesday. I will be having further discussions with SDERA to determine what we can do next to provide support and education into our school. This has been a disappointing experience for all involved – but it does not define us. At a time such as this when we are forced to confront what society is becoming and how it effects our students, I am comforted by the recent memories of our astounding primary school ANZAC service here last Friday and by the participation of over 50 of our secondary students in the very moving „combined schools‟ ANZAC March and Service in Albany on the same day. That, and many other similar things, is what we stand for and what defines us. „Start by doing what's necessary; then do what's possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.‟ Francis of Assisi

seeing you all there.

FROM THE SECONDARY DEPUTY PRINCIPAL – Bob Trouchet Welcome back to school to all secondary students. Parents had the opportunity to speak with their child‟s teachers at the parent meeting on Thursday after school last week. Unfortunately Miss Caldas was unable to be present as she had to return to America for a family health emergency. She is expecting to be back at Kojonup DHS in two weeks‟ time. Miss Livingstone has varied her employment hours and is not working on Thursdays. Parents still wishing to speak with either Miss Caldas or Miss Livingstone may phone the Front Office to make appointments. On Friday last week 51 students and supervisors attended the student led Anzac Centenary Parade and Service in Albany. From all reports our students behaved exemplarily. They then had fast food for lunch before spending the afternoon participating in team building laser tag games. This was a Good Standing event for students who have shown satisfactory attendance and behaviour. Thanks to Mr Ringrose for organising the laser tag. The overall focus in secondary this term is on having a go and doing your best. It is not possible to enjoy success if you don‟t attempt the task first. Sometimes students are not keen on attempting new or difficult tasks. This may be due to a fear of failure or sheer laziness. Remember that we learn little from successfully repeating the same task over and over again but a range of different activities provide a lot more opportunities for learning. And finally a quote from Thomas Edison - "Genius is one per cent inspiration and ninety-nine per cent perspiration. Accordingly, a ‟genius‟ is often merely a talented person who has done all of his or her homework."

STUDENTS POEMS READ AT THE SCHOOL ANZAC SERVICE They sacrificed themselves for our country. They gave their hearts to our nation. Those brave men and women travelled to the trenches, the nursing places, to the plane cockpits, to the army tank cabs. They fought until they could fight no more. Those men who made it home remained haunted by the noises and the atmosphere of war. Those men who did not make it home now lie peacefully. Their job is fulfilled because there is peace. Rest in peace ANZACs. Their spirit, our pride. Darcy O’Halloran

The nights are dark and stormy

The battles are grim

This is a living nightmare

Please don‟t come

All the men are dying

In agony and pain

All is peaceful and calm

I‟m happy as can be

Nothing‟s letting my spirit down

There‟s rumors that a war is here

It can‟t be true

Can it?

I limp home

Cold and wet Wishing I never went Broken legs and arms

Half deaf with the screams of dying men

Will haunt me forever How am I to resume a normal life

With all of this pain?

Harry Parker

Among this peace, the war begins for these men. We remember this day with great sorrow. We think of the bravery they had. We hear the sound of the trumpet. We will remember them. Chanel Bowey

GENERAL LUNCHBOX TIPS How to Understand Food Labels Sometimes when choosing foods to go into lunchboxes it can be difficult to know which are the healthiest. A general guide is to stick to foods low in fat, salt and sugar. Don‟t rely on health claims on the front labels as your guide. Instead learn a few simple label reading tips to choose healthy food and drinks for yourself. When reading the nutrition panel, it‟s best to use the column for 100g or 100ml which makes it easier to compare foods. Total fat: Generally choose foods with less than 10g per 100g. For milk, yoghurt and ice cream choose less than 2g per 100g. For cheese, choose less than 3g per 100g. Saturated fat: Aim for the lowest. Less than 3g per 100g is best. Sodium/salt: Food with less than 400mg per 100g are good but less than 120mg per 100g is best. Sugar: Sugar content less than 15g per 100g is okay but less than 5g is ideal. On the nutritional panel, ingredients are listed from greatest to smallest weight. Choose foods that don‟t have fat, sugar or salt listed in the first 3 ingredients on the list. Be mindful that other words can be used. For example, other names for high salt ingredients include baking powder, garlic salt, sodium, stock cubes, meat/yeast extract and MSG to name a few. Sugar is often disguised as fructose, malt, honey, glucose and golden syrup etc. Ingredients high in fat for example are sour cream, palm oil, lard, butter, vegetable shortening, milk solids and animal fat/oil.
