PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI...Passover is by far and away my favorite Jewish Holiday because it is all about family, friends, and community! As a child, every morning during Pesach was spent squeezing orange juice and cooking matzah brie with my mother and father by my side. The seders were my two favorite nights of the year. The

food was incredible....mushroom farfel kugel, tzimmis, potato latkes, mashed potatoes with gribbines...the thought of these delicacies brings tears to my eyes. The food was delicious but the most important part of the holiday was the time spent together with family and friends. It is the relationships that bind us all and make these times so memorable.

My cousin Norman z"l and I got permission to leave school and walk to his house for lunch every day during Passover. Our Grandmother flew up each year (of course from Collins Avenue in Miami!) and spent the holiday at his home running a Kosher for Passover restaurant. There were family and friends everywhere eating lunch at their house. Business associates of my Dad's, relatives and friends from all over the community, everyone was invited, and no one was turned away. My Aunt and my Grandmother just kept cooking! They encouraged everyone to come over for lunch.

Unfortunately, people pass away, and the natural history of families is that they disperse all over the country. Life was simple and amazing when all my relatives lived within a three block radius of my house. The Temple was a stone's throw from my home as well.

My Dad ( G-d willing) will be 100 years old on the second day of Pesach, and I will be traveling up north to be with him. All my cousins have relocated all over the country but they are coming in for his birthday and we will be 36 people for the seders. It will be a pleasure to retrieve all the aluminum tables from the basement to accommodate everyone. I can't wait.

This brings me to Temple Emanu-El and the vital place it holds in all of our lives. Our Synagogue celebrates all of our holidays as a congregation and we have evolved into a loving, supportive community. For Renee and me this Temple has become our extended family. It is our spiritual home and also a warm environment full of close friends who have become like family.

This is my last column as the President of this amazing Temple. The greatest honor of my life has been serving this Shul as your President for the previous four years. I want to thank each of you for the confidence and trust that you have placed in me. The personal reward and satisfaction it has given me are beyond what I could have ever imagined. I will be forever grateful for being afforded this incredible opportunity.

Chag Kasher v’same’achB’shalom,

Rob

One of the most famous rabbis in the Jewish tradition is Hillel and one of his most famous sayings is “If not now, when?”

Hillel regularly appears in the Talmud alongside another rabbi – Shammai. Hillel is most often portrayed as a patient man, lenient in his rulings, while Shammai is viewed

as a stricter, sometimes grumpy individual. Case in point is Shammai’s chasing away a potential convert with a stick in response to the man’s desire to be taught the entire Torah while standing on one foot!

Not surprisingly, Jewish Law tends to follow the rulings of Hillel.

Perhaps ironically, it is the sometimes grumpy Shammai who instructed us in Pirkei Avot 1:15 to “receive every person with a pleasant countenance." In other words, we are supposed to welcome the people we meet with a smile.

Most of us who attend Services or events at Temple Emanu-El – or at any synagogue for that matter – tend to forget what it feels like to be there for the first time. We forget the awkwardness that comes from not knowing anyone and the disorientation that results from being in an environment unfamiliar to us.

It’s a moment of vulnerability, walking into a synagogue for the first time. And, at that moment, encountering a smiling person who cares that they are there can make all the difference.

So, here’s what I’m asking from each of you:

If you see an unfamiliar face at Temple Emanu-El, PLEASE SAY HELLO!

Introduce yourself. Ask a few questions: “Are you new to the area?” “Is this your first time here at Temple Emanu-El?” “Do you live here full-time?” To be quite frank, it really doesn’t matter what questions you ask. Just DON’T ignore a stranger!

If you’re feeling comfortable, invite the newcomer to sit with you in the Sanctuary during Services, or even to sit with you at lunch. Introduce them to the other people around you. Invite them to come again and offer to meet them at the Temple on their next visit.

By following the advice of Shammai – to greet everyone warmly – and the advice of Hillel – to do so now – we will truly be establishing Temple Emanu-El of Palm Beach as the Kehillah Kedoshah (the Sacred Community) we know it to be – kind, loving and truly welcoming.

B’Shalom,Rabbi Michael Resnick

Passover is just around the corner and that means that it is time to

As you know, the Torah (Exodus 12:19 and 13:7) prohibits possession of Chametz (leaven) on Passover. In other words, it is a biblical requirement to get rid of all of the Chametz in your possession before Passover begins.

As an alternative to the disposal of Chametz, many people sell their Chametz (Mechirat Chametz) as a means of "removing" the Chametz from their possession.

If you would like the Temple to sell your Chametz on your behalf, please contact the office (561) 832-0804 and we do the rest!

This is time-sensitive, so don't delay! The deadline to sell your Chametz is by FRIDAY MORNING, APRIL 19, 2019 at 10:00AM.

Authorization to Sell Chametz I, the undersigned, fully empower and permit Rabbi Michael Resnick to act in my place and stead, and on my behalf to sell all chametz possessed by me, knowingly or unknowingly as dened by the Torah and Rabbinic Law (e.g. chametz, possible chametz, and all kind of chametz mixtures). Also chametz that tends to harden and adhere to inside surfaces of pans, pots, or cooking utensils, the utensils themselves, as well as pet food that contain chametz and mixtures thereof.

Rabbi Michael Resnick is also empowered to lease all places wherein the chametz owned by me may be found, particularly at the address listed below, and elsewhere.

Rabbi Michael Resnick has full right to appoint any agent or substitute in his stead and said substitute shall have full right to sell and lease as provided herein.

Rabbi Michael Resnick also has the full power and right to act as he deems t and proper in accordance with all the details of the Bill of Sale used in the transaction to sell all my chametz, chametz mixtures, etc., as provided herein.

This power is in conformity with all Torah, Rabbinic and Civil laws.(Please Print Clearly)

TEMPLE EMANU-EL OF PALM BEACH CULTURAL ARTS COMMITTEE

American Impressionists selected NYC's streets, residences and nature in Madison Park, Gramercy Park and Union Square. The newly constructed important area of Lower Manhattan boasts important memorials and the replacement of tower buildings. The elaborate Woolworth Building contrasts markedly with the Tenement Museum and its preserved area of old NYC as well as more of the recently built exciting skyscrapers. The Jewish influence will be seen at Yeshiva University's art museum, special synagogues, the Jewish Holocaust Museum and by Jewish artists and architects.

The next Yizkor Service will be on Saturday Morning, April 27, 2019

as we celebrate the Last Day of Passover.

Please join us.

Although the most prominent Yizkor service is the one conducted on Yom Kippur Day, most people are surprised to learn that there are three other occasions when Yizkor is recited - on the last day of Passover, Shavuot, and Sukkot. While not as famous as the Yizkor on Yom Kippur, they are, nonetheless, equally important and equally beautiful. We invite you to remember your loved ones at all of these Yizkor Services throughout the year at Temple Emanu-El.

As our women’s voices were raised in prayer last month during our Shabbaton, the entire congregation shared in a truly enriching weekend. Kol HaKavod to Vivienne Ivry and Renée Gordon for co-chairing this massive undertaking

where over 70 of our Women’s League’s 187 members took part. Thank you to Kate Richman and Emily Kirschner for sharing their gorgeous voices and to all the women who studied and were so well prepared. And thank you to Gilda Block for sponsoring our special kiddush luncheon.

Be sure to join us on April 8th at 1PM as we Celebrate Pesach with a double header. First, experience our version of the Food Network’s hit game show --“Charoset Chopped”. It is a hands-on adventure sure to please your palate. Then watch the Temple Emanu-El Players perform the “Maidens of Mitzrayim”, an original play by our very own Maureen Wise.

Mark your calendars for Monday, April 29 when the Women’s League Book Club meets to decide on books for next season. Vetted suggestions are welcomed. Please join us Monday, May 20 for “An Afternoon at the Movies”.

As Passover approaches, many thoughts come to mind. I reflect on the rich memories of my Passovers past. I remember the Seders at my Bubbe and Zeyde’s, with more than 30 aunts, uncles and cousins gathered. The rich aromas of Bubbe’s cooking permeated the house; the familiar chanting seemed endless as I, the youngest of 10 grandchildren, waited patiently to find the Afikoman. How I loved gathering with the whole family. Fast forward to my parents’ home. I cherish the hours I spent in the kitchen with my mother, mastering her special recipes, setting the table and welcoming all our guests.

Eventually the drumstick was passed to me. The cleaning and koshering, planning, shopping, recipe-sharing and cooking became my responsibility. With the table set and the family and friends gathered, we created our own traditions and memories. I reaped the dividends of my labors as my children recited the Four Questions. Together we shared the Passover story, experimented with different Haggadahs and belted out our own version of “Go Down Moses” and “Chad Gad Ya”.

Now that our little girl who asked the Four Questions is a wife, mother and Hazzan, the family travels to New York to share in yet another tradition. Yes, I still clean, shop and prepare, together with our daughter, passing on the recipes from my Bubbe and mother. Then I sit back and relish in the Seder as she leads us in song and our grandchildren run off to find the Afikoman. L’dor v'dor—the tradition continues.

As the season draws to a close and many of you scatter to be with family and friends, I wish all of you a zissen Pesach.

B’Shalom,Marjie Konigsberg

A BISSEL ABOUT "SHTISEL"

On a morning in March, over thirty people turned up at Temple Emanu-El for a discussion on the Israeli TV sensa-tion, "Shtisel", the multi-episode drama which airs on Netflix in Hebrew and Yiddish with English subtitles.

The discussion leaders, Haviva Langenauer and Sheila Josephberg, tossed questions around all morning and into the afternoon. Who is your favorite character and why? Akiva was the nearly unanimous answer. Who was your least favorite? The uncle from Belgium was the unanimous response. (The character is played by the Sasson Gabi who was the bandleader in "The Band's Visit.") Sheila says, "A great deal of the discussion centered around Akiva’s sister Giti and her husband Lippe ...... why did he initially abandon his family? What did we think about Giti’s reac-tion and how she handled the situation? The other biggest question to the group centered on who we thought were the strongest people... the men or the women."

Who are the these ultra-Orthodox Shtisels that they have captured a vast TV audience in Israel and world-wide? The winsome Akiva is the youngest child in a family that is ruled by an esteemed Jerusalem rabbi, a fervid Haredi. Kive for short, is at the beck and call of his unwavering father. He never minds being the errand boy because he has a good heart. But at 27, he yearns to marry. Trouble is, he picks the wrong person more than once. It's a love story not unlike many others but it has other unique charms.

Essential to the story, Kive is a talented artist, ceaselessly drawing people around him despite his father's disdain. Should talent be subsumed by religious fervor? Can Kive, supported by generous patrons in America and Israel, ever leave the cocoon?

In episodes over two seasons we see how the Haredi function in different situations, how they regard money, how the women deal with endless childbirths, how they confront being seduced by the outside world. Thanks to Women's League and Cultural Arts Committee and the discussion leaders, for creating this novel program. Will there be a third season? (An American version of "Shtisel," set in Brooklyn, may be coming soon.)

Thank Y, RobJoin us as we thank our outgoing President

ROB GORDONwith a celebration of his four years of

service to Temple Emanu-El of Palm Beach.

Friday evening, May 3, 2019 at 7:00 PMIn addition, we will be thanking our outgoing members of the Board of Trustees as well as installing and welcoming our new President, Steven Horowitz,

and incoming Board Members.

MEET OUR NEW BOARD MEMBERS*Emily Gardner describes herself first and foremost as a wife, mom, and grandma. But this very erudite woman modestly admits that she has "many" graduate degrees in literature. As a relatively new member of Temple Emanu-El with her husband Gerald she has quickly become involved in many of the Temple's offerings including Women's League Board, the B'nai Mitzvah class and Melton Studies. Combining her critical literary skills she is the new book club chairperson. "Bathing in the warm inclusive embrace of Temple Emanu-El" led her to accept the nomination to the Temple Board.

Michelle Kirschner and her husband Robert have been members of Temple Emanu-El since 2010. They have four children - Allie (23), Preston (21), Emily (16) and Ashley (14), three of whom have attended religious school and celebrated their Bat/Bar Mitzvahs at Temple Emanu-El. Michelle is a Real Estate agent with Sotheby’s International Realty in Palm Beach and enjoys spending her spare time with her family, her temple community or exercising. Michelle looks forward to serving Temple Emanu-El as a member of the Board of Trustees.

Brian Lemelman, originally from New York, moved to Palm Beach County in 1995 with his wife Vivian and three children. He has been a technology entrepreneur for over 40 years, having started several companies including one in Israel in the mid 1990s. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Jewish Community Foundation and the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County. Brian is honored to serve on the Board of Trustees of Temple Emanuel-El where he will work vigorously to help to insure that the synagogue will be vibrant for generations to come.

Steven Pincus has been a proud and active member of Temple Emanu-El for approximately 17 years. He and his wife, Laura, raised both of their children at Temple Emanu-El and enjoyed celebrating Michael’s bris and both Josh’s and Michael’s Bar Mitzvahs in the shul. Steve is a native of New Jersey, but a Floridian since 1991. He earned his BA at George Washington University and his JD at Nova Southeastern Univer-sity. Steve is an attorney working at Florida Crystals Corporation and is also the Chairman of the Board of Supervisors for the Hamal Commu-nity Development District. In his spare time, find Steve watching a Florida Panthers game or playing poker.

Buzz Solomon was raised on the South Jersey shore. "Then I left home and roamed around…along the way, met Cecilia (Chetchi)...we had two kids and roamed some more…finally we came down to WPB and joined TEPB, one the best decisions we’ve made…I’m honored to be a trustee and hope to get into Adult Education and Membership."

Abraham Max Zaretsky, who goes by “Max”, is a native of West Palm Beach and has been a member of Temple Emanu-El since he was 10 years old. He is now a Real Estate Attorney working in his family's law practice with his father, Richard Zaretsky. He is married to Johanna Kandel-Zaretsky, founder and CEO of the Alliance for Eating Disorders Inc, a national organization based in West Palm Beach. Together they have a daughter, Annabelle, who is currently 2 3/4 years old. Max hopes that his expertise and ideas will help TEPB embrace its membership and the local Jewish Community at large, and in turn strengthen the bonds the bring us together as a people and community.

*These six outstanding members of our Temple community have been nominated for 2-year Board of Trustees positions.Since there have been no opposing nominations, it is assumed at this writing (3/31/19) that they will be elected at the annual meeting.

The Rothman Religious School students enjoyed learning about Purim and had a great time at our 50’s Purim Sock Hop. As we move into the Passover season they look forward to continue their learning and focus on all of the amazing mitzvot surrounding the Passover holiday. Our Yala! students are exploring the Jewish take on current events and “Hot Topics”, including the Jewish view on how we look at the celebrities in our world. Yala! is open to all Post-Bna’i Mitzvah teens, if you know of anyone that would like to participate they are always welcome to join. See our calendar for exact dates. Beach Youth groups have been having an amazing year. Our USYers had a great time at Arvot USY Spring Fling, roller skating the night away with their friends.

Six members of Temple Emanu-El of Palm Beach and Beach USY took time out from their Spring Break to participate in AIPAC Policy Conference in Washington. Hayley Huber, Co-President of Beach USY has this to say about her experience at AIPAC Policy Conference. “The fact that 18,000 Americans—white, black, Asian, Hispanic, Jewish, Christian, and Muslim—came together as the sole result of a shared love for Israel and recognition of its importance to the U.S. is riveting. As an informed high school senior, it was amazing to see our democracy in action - people exercising their rights and the government listening and responding to our calls. My favorite part of the policy conference was the Innovation Showcase, giving us a little insight into Israel’s latest technological developments including biodegradable plastic alternatives, sustainable houses on Mars, and an upcoming cure for certain types of cancer. I also loved hearing from high ranking American politicians/officials and affirming that they too have strong ties to Israel and are dedicated to strengthening our alliance with them.” Please remember that our school and youth programs are open to all families, so if you know of any families with children interested in joining either, bring them to an event! Yala! means “let’s go” and allows teens to do just that, in a fun, social, and enlightening way. This program is designed for post Bar/Bat Mitzvah age students to continue their Jewish education as they grow into responsible Jewish adults. The classes specifically focus on the pressing issues that confront them as they grow up in today’s world. Yala!

Gigi and Bella are both 7th grade honor roll students at BAK MSOA playing double reed instruments in the Band Department. The girls attended the Arthur I. Meyer Jewish Academy from kindergarten through 5th grade. Gigi plays the bassoon and Bella plays the oboe. Both are members of the National Junior Honor Society. While both Gigi and Bella appreciate the arts they also love sports. Both girls compete in triathlons and in local USTA and International tennis tournaments. This summer the girls will be partici-pating in the JCC Maccabi Games as part of the Palm Beach County delegation.

For their Bat Mitzvah Project, Gigi and Bella are part of the Mitzvah Quintet and will be playing at local nursing homes and in-patient facilities. Gigi and Bella enjoy traveling and spending time in Connecticut and Israel with their grandparents.

Yom Hashoah - May 2

Yom Hashoah–Holocaust Remembrance Day–is observed one week after the conclusion of Passover, on the 27th of Nissan. Significantly, it is also halfway between the first day of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising–which began on the first day of Passover in 1943. This date, chosen by the Israeli government, emphasizes the nature of Jewish opposition to disaster. While the rituals for this holiday are still being created, it is a solemn day that is widely observed wherever Jews live.

Yom Hazikaron - May 8

Yom Hazikaron–Israeli Memorial Day–is observed one week after Yom Hashoah and one day before Yom Ha’atzmaut. It is a quintessentially Israeli holiday, commemorating all the soldiers who fell in defense of Israel from the Israeli War of Independence in 1948 to the present. While it is often acknowledged outside of Israel, it is in Israel itself that this holiday unites the whole country in its somber observance.

Yom Ha’atzmaut - May 9

Directly following Yom Hazikaron, Yom Ha’atzmaut is a joyful celebration of Israel’s independence. It is celebrated annually on the 5th day of Iyar, which in 1948 corresponded to May 14, the day on which David Ben Gurion, the nation’s first prime minister, announced the creation of the State of Israel. Yom Ha’atzmaut is celebrated both in Israel and in Jewish communities throughout the world.

MODERN JEWISH HOLIDAYS

Lag B’Omer - May 23

Lag B'Omer is a festive minor holiday that falls during the seven weeks between Passover and Shavuot. This period of time is known as the Omer. An omer is an ancient Hebrew measure of grain, amounting to about 3.6 liters. Biblical law forbade any use of the new barley crop until after an omer was brought as an offering to the Temple in Jerusalem. The "Counting of the Omer,” begins on the second day of Passover and ends on Shavuot. Lag B'Omer is a shorthand way of saying “the 33rd day of the Omer”. On this day families celebrate usually with picnics and outdoor events. Also, weddings are permitted, otherwise forbidden on all other days during the seven weeks.

CLERGY GRATUITIES

Members inquire from time to time what the proper protocol is for recognizing the Rabbi and Hazzan for officiating at life-cycle events. The answer is that the Rabbi and Hazzan are paid by the Temple to provide those services to our members. Therefore, separate compensation is neither charged nor expected for those services. However, if a person feels motivated to do more, we recommend that contributions be made to the Temple in honor of the Rabbi and/or Hazzan. Each of them also maintains a discretionary fund from which financial assistance is provided to those in our congregation and our larger community who are in need.
