From Abundance to Scarcity RABBI NOLAN LEBOVITZ During the spring, we move from Purim to Passover. Purim is a holiday of abundance. Many of the customs of Purim seem like a departure from the culture of our traditions. We are commanded to feel joy, to exchange delicacies, and to drink excessively. Jewish holidays usually legislate our actions, not our emotions, and there is no other day in the Jewish calendar on which drinking is glorified. On the other hand, Passover feels like a holiday of scarcity. We connect back to our narrative as slaves, eat the bread of affliction, and dip our food in salt water. Much of the Halachic discussion about Passover addresses the minimum amounts of allowed chametz, or the minimum amount of eaten matzah needed to fulfill the commandment. We can recognize that Passover is the defining narrative of our people, and not Purim. Purim is a one day aberration, whereas Passover is an eight day identity-forming exercise. We discuss the Exodus and the Passover miracles each and every day in our liturgy. Four of the books in the Torah form the long Passover narrative from slavery in Egypt through the wilderness toward our Promised Land, while the Megillah of Esther is a single, short book. Purim is a holiday that requires little planning for most of us, and allows ample opportunity for enjoyment. Passover is the holiday that requires the most preparation, and does not clearly provide happiness. en, what should this transition mean for us as we undergo the move from Purim, a single day of superficial gluttonous acts, to Passover, a long holiday about identity and meaning? Purim champions a deep message, which shows us that while wearing masks of the diaspora and enjoying material wealth, society can turn on the Jewish People under our noses, and we must defend ourselves. While there is no question how much I appreciate the significance of the Purim narrative, there is also no question that we are supposed to prioritize our week of scarcity. We are a people intended to empathize with the poor and the needy, the widow and the orphan. As with all things, I prefer a compromise between these two outlooks. I try to carry the humility of Passover and the strength of Purim. Perhaps, the larger lesson is that moderation is the key. We can enjoy the absurd palace of Ahasuerus for one day, but we are destined to follow Moses out of slavery to freedom, out of Egypt to Sinai, every day of our lives. For it is in the Passover narrative that we encounter God and build relationship with the Divine. at remains our profound goal as individuals and as a Jewish People: to find Godliness in our journey, whether we journey in the wilderness or on Westwood. From the PresidentJANET SCHULMAN TRASK, President

I am honored and excited to be the President of the Board of Directors of Adat Shalom. I look forward to building on our strong foundation as we move forward into the future. I consider the synagogue to be my Jewish Home and I feel welcomed and valued every day. My vision is to have every member feel the same way. I look forward

to meeting, getting to know and working with the many congregants who are the heart and soul of the synagogue. I deeply appreciate the confidence you have shown in me to help sustain and grow our wonderful community. This past year, and especially the past few months, have shown us how robust we can be in attracting new members, hosting creative events, bringing in renowned speakers and in providing diverse programming for our multigenerational congregation. We started off the New Year in January with our Shabbaton, which was attended by almost 100 people—from 7-month-old infants to people in their 80’s. And everyone connected at services, walks, games, and discussions. We really enjoyed each other! The month continued with the Unorthodox podcast which attracted more than 200 people, both from our congregation and many from the outside community. We were highly visible in the Jewish Journal and on social media and the event brought us to a new level of community outreach and interest in Adat Shalom. Our Religious School is firmly in place and continues to attract new students. The

adult education program with Talking Torah and Monday Morning with the Masters brings to participants new levels of understanding. We are fortunate to have a very dynamic and committed Rabbi, a strong and dedicated Board and an excellent staff. Together we form a team that continues to enhance the health and vision of Adat Shalom. We welcomed 3 new Board members this year and they are already utilizing their skills and talents to help strengthen our community. Our Women’s League and Men’s Club offer programs and activities that are important to the life of Adat Shalom, and I encourage congregants to participate. In addition, we are actively utilizing our newly developed volunteer data base to seek out new volunteers to help with a variety of needed tasks. With the plans for a new Yahrzeit Board underway, we can look forward to a beautiful and meaningful addition to our Sanctuary that will honor our past and our future. We will also be restarting the Ner Tamid Society to ensure financial health for the future. And of course, we welcome new players to our winning softball team! We are very much looking forward to our annual fundraising dinner where we will honoring Liz and Barry Bar-El for their many years of dedication and services to Adat Shalom. Their thoughtful work was critical in sustaining our community and ensuring its future. Please join us on June 2 to honor Liz and Barry and celebrate our community’s growth.

Adat Shalom Shabbaton HILARY LOTTENBERG

Wow…what a weekend we had! During the first weekend in January, Brandeis Bardin was infused with the spirit of Adat Shalom. With just under 100 of us ranging in age from less than a year to over 90 years old, we prayed and ate and climbed and ate and danced and ate and sang and ate together with the Adat Shalom ruach I know and love. I was so excited when I heard Adat Shalom was going back to Brandeis Bardin for a weekend Shabbaton. Memories from our first Shabbaton as new members with a less-than-one year-old reminded me that this was how we began our successful integration into the Adat Shalom community. The opportunity to meet and connect with members from every generation is a special gift, and this year’s Shabbaton once again provided me that experience even as I am now a more seasoned member. My favorite memory from the weekend is hearing Cantor Dale describe how he grossly underestimated our Adat Shalom participants. At each activity for which he set out chairs, he ended up having to double the count as so many more of us showed up than he expected. Whether we were able to actively participate or not (and most did most of the time), we came and listened and watched and cheered our fellows on. We leaped outside our comfort zones and got to know each other better. I learned which member hasn’t learned to swim, who doesn’t like chocolate, and who has the same birthday as me! Best of all, Rabbi Nolan made sure our weekend was filled with the unique spirituality our Jewish tradition brings to every corner of our lives. This wasn’t just a weekend at camp…this was a Jewish weekend at a Jewish camp with our own Adat Shalom family. I am so grateful to everyone who planned and led the activities and who came and participated. I can’t wait until next year!

Religious School UpdateALEX AND JOEY SCHACHAT, Religious School Students

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day we walked together with Ward A.M.E. Church. The day before, we designed the banner. First we met the other kids at the church. We went around the table and told each other our names. Then we started planning the poster. Some of the kids drew pictures while we put letter stickers on the banner. We spelled out Adat Shalom and Ward A.M. E. Church. We also drew a globe and put a picture of MLK, Jr on it. The Rabbi talked to us about our two groups. Both the Jews and the African Americans were discriminated against. We were both once slaves. MLK Jr. helped fight against discrimination. On Monday morning we met and waited together for the parade to start. All the kids helped hold the banner we made. When we walked, people waved at us and we heard them say “Shalom” and “Happy King Day.” There were a lot of people watching the parade. There were floats and music. It was fun.

Rick Richman Book TalkLIZ BAR-EL

On January 29, Adat Shalom welcomed Rick Richman, who spoke about his book, Racing Against History: the 1940 Campaign for a Jewish Army to Fight Hitler. His work documents the attempts of three Zionist leaders to enlist American Jews and the British government to support and train a Jewish army, underscoring the extent of how well-documented the horrors of life in Europe and Poland actually were at that time. The author shared his message with about 65 attendees, emphasizing the need to pay attention, speak up, and act on the information we have today about anti-Semitic threats and dangers that face Israel. A copy of his book is now available in the Adat Shalom library.

Unorthodox was a Smash! On Friday, February 1, Adat Shalom hosted a Shabbat service and live recording of the #1 Jewish podcast, Unorthodox, which came to Los Angeles for the first time ever! Hosted by Mark Oppenheimer, Stephanie Butnick, and Liel Leibovitz of Tablet Magazine, the live podcast was a raucous, yet erudite, good time for all.

We had a full house for the event and it was wonderful to see so many community members and new faces participate in robust services, conversation, and laughter. Thank you to our amazing volunteers, led by Tracy Shemano and Judy Paz, who worked tirelessly to create a stellar evening and shine such a positive light on our Adat Shalom community.Click here for the link to the podcast: Unorthodox Podcast.

Adat Shalom Book ClubYAEL HARTSTEIN The new Adat Shalom Book Club had two successful meetings in Newmark Hall on December 11 and February 5. The December meeting focused on the book Waking Lions by Ayelet Gundar-Goshen, a notable young Israeli writer whose novel focused on the plight of the African migrant community in modern day Israel. A

lively discussion ensued about the themes of the novel and its wider implications in our own society. In February, the book club met for an engaging discussion of Giorgio Bassani’s novel The Gold Rimmed Spectacles. The discussion included the historical context of fascism and anti-Semitism in pre-War Italy. The book club draws members of the Adat Shalom community with wide ranging experiences and perspectives, resulting in a multi-dimensional discussion in a warm and friendly environment. All are

welcome to attend. The next book club meeting is on March 12 at 7pm. We’ll be reading Dora Bruder by Patrick Modiano.

MLK Weekend was Jam-Packed with Women’s League Events! Adat Shalom Women’s League Shabbat formed the center of a weekend of amazing events. Not only were we able to recognize our devoted, tireless leader Sara Lewis, but were also privileged to host Women’s League International President Margie Miller. Sara is modest beyond words. In spite of all she does for Women’s League and our community, she has been reluctant to be publicly acknowledged. We could not think of anyone more deserving of our Cha’yah Olam Award. Our

thanks goes to Ronnie Lampert, who so ably organized the service, and to all those who made it possible. In spite of titles, Margie Miller is warm, knowledgeable and eager to share with and learn from each of us. Margie spoke during the Shabbat service and at the Kiddush luncheon where she relayed her 9/11 experiences. Losing her husband on that infamous day, she has, in spite of it all, lived a full life which included leadership of a bereavement group for other victims. In addition

to Women’s League, Margie now sits on the Boards of numerous other important organizations in the Jewish community. The weekend with Margie also included a dinner with our own Women’s League Executive Board which was graciously hosted by Diane Sternfels. Margie also led a Sunday morning leadership development workshop which was instrumental in inspiring new ideas and providing new opportunities for involvement.

World Wide Wrap On Sunday, February 3, Men’s Club sponsored our annual World Wide Wrap. Come Visit Our New Library Roll of the drums…We’re happy to announce that Adat Shalom now has a beautiful new library. Come see for yourself! It’s a library based on the honor system. No cards or forms to fill out, nothing to write, especially on Shabbat. The library will be open on Shabbat and weekdays. Ask in the office if the door is locked. You are welcome any time. You’ll notice that there are no numbers on the books. We organized by color, which is now the most modern and accepted system of library organization. Finding a book is easy. Look for its subject color on the room map and follow the color to a book’s location. Borrow a book, return it in two to three weeks, or sooner, and place it back on the shelf that matches its color or in the labeled return basket. It’s really easy. What might you find? For adults, we have a full range of titles, from copies of the Tanach, books being used in Rabbi Lebovitz’s classes, Jewish history, ethics, prayer books, books celebrating Shabbat and holidays, haggadahs, art books, cook books and, of course, books on Israel. There is a reference section, which does not circulate so enjoy with a cup of coffee in the library. The children’s section is within easy reach on the lower shelves. Most of the children’s books are in color-coded containers labeled by subject. The books each have a sticker on the front cover that matches the sticker on the container and indicates the subject matter. There are containers for each holiday and Shabbat. You will find books on customs, folk tales, Hebrew, Israel and lots of fun Jewish themed stories. There are chapter books too. Adults, of course, are welcome to borrow children’s books, read them to the children in your life, enjoy them yourself, return them and come back for more. The books can be returned to the proper container, but it’s fine to put them in the return basket.

Your friendly librarians,

Sandy Helman and Barbara Stone

The Adat Shalom Chaverim is looking forward to the upcoming season of the

Interfaith Softball League.

This year we are working on a t-shirt and cap design. We also need more players as we

certainly can never have enough. Games start in April and will typically happen on Monday

nights at Cheviot Hills Park. If you are remotely interested in softball--say you played when you

were younger--you might want to join our team. We have a blast! Please contact the office
