Some Thoughts on the SidraBY RABBI NISAN ANDREWS

Vayikra StatisticsMitzvot: 16 of the 613 mitzvot, 11 positive and 5 negativeVerses: 111 (26th longest of the 54 Sidrot)Words: 1673 (20th longest)Letters: 6222 (20th longest)Haftarah: 34 verses (9th longest of the 80 Haftarot)

The Book of Vayikra has 247 of the 613 mitzvot, which is more than 40% of the mitzvot in less than 15% of the content of the Torah. The Book of Vayikra averages one mitzvah every 3.5 verses (by comparison, Devarim has one mitzvah every 5 verses, Shemot one per 11 verses, Bemidbar one per 25 verses and Bereishit one per 511 verses).

Frequently, a new section of the Torah begins with the phrase “And the Lord spoke to Moshe (Moses) saying”. This week's Parsha (and book) of Vayikra also begins with a double "talking" as Hashem “CALLED to Moshe, and the Lord SPOKE to him". Why the double communication?

Rashi addresses this element of repetition:For every communication between God and Moshe, whether denoted by the expressions: “And He spoke,” “and He said,” “and He commanded,” all were preceded by a prior summons (ויקרא). To the prophets of the nations of the world, however, He revealed Himself through expressions denoting coincidence and impurity, as the verse says, “and God happened upon (ויקר) Bilam (Balaam)” (Num. 23:4).

Rashi suggests that Hashem called out to Moshe before engaging him in conversation or instruction, giving him the opportunity to prepare himself and to enter the encounter in the appropriate frame of mind. God is sensitive to Moses in that he doesn’t want to take him by surprise. The upshot of this comment is that a Godly meeting necessitates one to be primed and focused.

Rashi adds a further point. He suggests that a spontaneous communication by God reflects “impurity.” The result then is that sanctity requires an atmosphere of preparation, planning, and forethought. This contradicts an undercurrent I, perhaps erroneously, detect within contemporary society in that it romanticises spontaneity. It sometimes feels as if immediate, instinctive and impulsive actions are implied to be an ultimate test of truth or a window into one's heart. Rashi here is proposing an alternative model of authenticity.

Some additional depth to this discussion might be found were we to read the concluding verse from the Book of Shmot which immediately precedes our Parsha:

"And Moshe was not able to enter into the Tent of Meeting, because the cloud abode on it, and the glory of the Lord filled the Tabernacle"(Shmot 40:36).

Moshe is waiting for God to invite him in. While our Parsha starts with "Vayikra" - God calls him in and "VaYedaber" - he speaks to him.

There is value in the wait. It prepared Moshe for the great meeting with Hashem. God teaches us that when something is valuable, it would be good to adjust and focus our senses, to purify our thoughts and minds.

Our tradition teaches the power of preparation. The month of Elul precedes Rosh-Hashanna, Halakha mandates preparations on Friday for Shabbat; how can Pesach be adequately observed without the planning beforehand? To enter the Temple, many forms of purification were necessary. For something to be worthwhile, it needs prior planning and forethought. The Mishna tells us that the Chassidim HaRishonim (early pious men) would sit and prepare for an hour before they prayed. We should not expect prayer to be deep and moving if we run off the street with a hundred things on our minds and then say the words. Proper prayer needs serious planning.

To reach a genuine contact with God, one needs a “קריאה”, a preparation via a slow, gradual process. Hard, persistent work and not spontaneity must precede our Encounter with God.

Supporting Boundaries – A Kinloss Drive to Support the Eruv. This Shabbat we are highlighting the North West London Eruv and will be following up with calls for support with its maintenance.

Eruvin are increasingly prevalent, though remain one of those halachic mechanisms that arouse great passions even within the communities which they benefit. While most of our Kinloss members do rely on the Eruv every week, we certainly have some who prefer not to. It is an area where Sephardim tend to be stricter.

I certainly do depend on it, and while it makes our lives much easier, it should not be taken for granted.

In the West End, where I grew up, we didn’t have an Eruv. I recall a visiting Rosh Yeshiva from Israel carrying to and from shul. When it was gently mentioned to him that he should not be carrying, he admitted that he was so used to having an Eruv wherever he went, he didn’t imagine for a moment that the centre of London would not.

Indeed, we had one wintry Shabbat in Jerusalem where the Eruv went down during the morning. Many people who were aware, even amongst the generally knowledgeable Orthodox, really did not know what to do. They, and even their parents had grown up able to carry keys and push prams.

Amongst local Rabbonim, some held that they should not announce from the pulpit that the eruv was down. Rather, they should tell people individually; and only those who they knew would be able to cope. Their apprehension was that some, who were in shul with kids and prams, who would shortly leave shul to go back home, or were expected out to guests, might be so flummoxed that, despite, being told the Eruv was down, they would not leave their keys or prams behind and would then be deliberately breaking Shabbat. If they didn’t know the Eruv was down, then the violation would be BeShoggeg גגבשו (inadvertent) rather than BeMayzid ידבמז (knowingly and deliberately.)

It was with such eventualities in mind that some authorities, such as the late Lubavitcher Rebbe, insisted that there should not be all-embracing city-wide Eruvin. People should always have in mind that while they might be within the Eruv perimeter, there were near neighbours/suburbs which were beyond it and for whom the full barrage of Shabbat restrictions continued to apply.

The purpose of the Eruv is to define an area within a Karmelit, a domain identified by the Rabbis, where carrying and transfer of commodities is not a violation of the Torah laws of Shabbat.

The Gemarra (Shabbat 6a) identifies four classes of Reshut or domain. Reshut HaRabim יםרשות הרב is a public space, a street 16 amot (cubits approx. 50cms) wide. There is an opinion that it must be open to 600,000 people daily, or conversely, that the flow of 600,000 people daily would elevate any Reshut to Reshut HaRabim. One cannot carry in Reshut HaRabim.

Reshut HaYachid רשות היחיד, by contrast is a private domain of at least 4 Tefachim (handbreadths approx. 10cms) square with walls of at least 10 Tefachim. One’s house or flat is a private domain and one can carry within it. However, the shared corridors between flats and common areas are not private and (absent a local Eruv)

correctly need an Eruv Chatzerot to facilitate carrying between units. The same is true within hotels and hospitals.

A Makom Patur מקום פטור is an Exempt Area within Reshut HaRabim, less than 4 Tefachim square and at least 3 Tefachim high (or deep). Two people sitting on a bollard when Shabbat came in could pass a sandwich between them. But they would have to finish it as they couldn’t dismount and carry it home!

The Karmelit יתכרמל is a middle-ground undefined by the Torah. It is minimally 4 Tefachim square with walls less than 10 Tefachim high or unbounded or partially bounded areas such as fields or streams. It is less frequented than Reshut HaRabim. Absent an Eruv, the Rabbis are strict and prohibit carrying and transfer in a Karmelit. The Eruv designates an area within a Karmelit, or an exclusion of Reshut HaRabim, where carrying and transfer are permitted (according to the permissive authorities!)

While it is easy to accept the notion that the confines of a walled city or gated community create a designated zone, the idea that some poles and wires have the same effect is pooh-pooed by everyone from secularists against any religious presence to sceptic Jews (or those wanting to keep those whom they consider “meshuggene frummers” from their neighbourhoods.) It is not a modern question. Within the Kuzari, R’ Yehuda HaLevi (d.1141) posits “How can you permit that which G-d forbade using such a despicable and lowly legal subterfuge?”

The answer given (3:50-51) is that the Torah does not prohibit carrying within a Karmelit. This is a stringency instituted by the Rabbis as a fence around the Law. Having enacted the stringency, they incorporated a leniency so that people should have some freedom in performing regular activity germane to their Shabbat. The setting up and maintenance of the Eruv is one of the most complex areas of Halacha. The intricate requirements of walls, poles and wires, creating a conceptual gateway or Tzurat HaPetach

תחצורת הפ , is so that the domains are marked and distinguished from Reshut HaRabim and to avoid the trivialisation of the underlying prohibition.

It is important to note that the Eruv does not allow for the carrying of things which are Muktze (cannot be handled, moved or used on Shabbat) such as car keys or objects such as theatre tickets, which will only be required once Shabbat is out.

We are indeed fortunate to live with an Eruv that enables young families to come to shul and go out to eat, to carry handkerchiefs, reading glasses and our house-keys, enabling us to carry books, to play ball in parks etc. It is a high-quality Eruv, halachically endorsed by Dayan Ehrentreu and physically maintained by volunteers and experts.

Our Eruv adds greatly to our Shabbat and supports our community. This Shabbat, we request that you do not take the Eruv for granted and hope that you will be receptive to our Kinloss “drive” to support the North West London Eruv.

Shabbat Shalom

THIS WEEK’S HAFTORAH BY RABBI ANDREWS The Haftorah read this week is part of Yichezkel’s (Ezekiel) prophecy regarding the messianic era. Specifically, he discusses the future leader of the Jewish people, the division of the Land of Israel, the building and structure of the third temple, as well as its regime of sacrifices.

While the reading begins with a description of the seven-day inauguration, it also mentions the paschal sacrifice offered on the 14th of Nisan. This is the apparent connection to the Maftir as the Korban Pesach is the primary instruction of this week’s particular reading.

That said, there are some serious differences between these two portions. The Korban Pesach earns the central focus of the maftir reading, while only appearing in but one verse in the Haftorah.

This prophecy may have been selected as the Haftorah for Shabbat Ha-Chodesh precisely to contrast this prophecy with the maftir reading. The maftir focuses on the beginning of the redemption while the Haftorah speaks of its culmination. The process began with the sacrifice in Egypt and will conclude with the rebuilding of the Bait HaMikdash (Temple). This is precisely the picture that emerges from the listing of God’s acts of kindness that we recite in the Haggada (“Dayenu”). We begin with “hotzi’anu mi-Mitzrayim” - the Exodus from Egypt - and end with “bana lanu et Bet Ha-bechira” - the building of the Bet Hamikdash.
