Some Thoughts on the SidraBY RABBI MICHAEL LAITNER

VAYAKHEL-PEKUDE STATISTICSFor the double sidrot of Vayakhel and Pekudei and the special Maftir of Hachodesh we read a staggering 234 verses. (The shortest single sidra is Vayelech with 30 verses and the longest single sidra is Naso with 176 verses).

Building Holiness

“And Moses saw the entirety of the work, and behold, they had performed it as God had commanded - so had they done - and Moses blessed them” (Shemot 39.43)

The Mishkan (Tabernacle), is now completed. Two questions immediately emerge from the text. Stated chronologically, why is the description of performance repeated, and what was the blessing that Moses gave?

We will look at the second question initially.

Rashi explains that Moses’ blessing was that the Divine Presence should rest over their work, invoking a verse found at the end of Psalm 90 and said in Shabbat morning prayers (p. 338 in the green Siddur).

This is one of the 11 Psalms in the Book of Tehilim (Psalms) attributed to Moses, as noted by Rashi in his commentary to that Psalm. Those 11 Psalms correspond to the 11 tribes blessed by Moses in the Sidra of Vezot HeBeracha (Devarim chapter 33).

Rabbi Shlomo Efraim, commenting on our verse in his 16th century work, “Keli Yakar”, sees the construction of the Mishkan and the blessing as repairing the damage caused by the building of the golden calf. Ironically, perhaps the golden calf was a catalyst for the construction of the Mishkan, as people needed a designated place where they could pray communally.

This emphasises the power of community and shul. It is a place where our very presence by itself provides the setting to enable all present to flourish, a process enhanced by our active participation.

Turning to the first question, Keli Yakar notes that the description of performance could also hint that the Jews carried out similar activities in both the construction of the Mishkan and the building of the golden calf. Moses prayed that in building the Mishkan, the people’s activities and motivations would be correct, worthy of receiving God’s blessing.

Keli Yakar concludes by noting that Moses prayed that the correct approach to constructing the Mishkan would lead to the realisation of one of the earliest verses describing the Mishkan, “And they shall make me a Mishkan and I will dwell amongst them”, (Shemot 25:8). Proper construction of the Mishkan, the very opposite of the construction of the golden calf, could demonstrate the worthiness of the people for God’s Presence to dwell within them.

May we emulate this to the best of our ability in our shuls.

After the Golden Calf comes the Cleansing Cow Parashat Parah is the third of the four special Shabbatot which fall around Purim (Shekalim, Zachor, Parah and HaChodesh). Shekalim is normally read before Rosh Chodesh Adar. Zachor is always the Shabbat before Purim and the remaining two fall on the Shabbatot on or before Rosh Chodesh Nisan. They are normally spread over five or occasionally six weeks. Unlike Shabbat Hagadol (the Shabbat immediately preceding Pesach) each has its own special Maftir and Haftorah.

Shekalim reminds us of the obligation to bring the Half-Shekel used to purchase communal offerings; Zachor, of the mitzvah to remember and blot out Amalek; Parah of the Red Heifer and HaChodesh of the sanctification of the New Moon of Nisan, our responsibility to manage our calendar and readying ourselves for Pesach ahead of redemption.

The timely leining of these parshiyot precedes the institution of our annual Torah cycle. The four parshiyot and holiday readings are identified in the Talmud (Megilla 29a). A triennial Torah cycle was prevalent in Eretz Yisrael and annual cycle in Babylon.

Every year we are punctilious to announce that special attention should be paid to the reading of Zachor; each word should be heard and correctly enunciated as it is a specific Torah requirement to hear the pessukim fulfilling our responsibility, reminding us of the evil of Amalek. Indeed, in leap years, where Zachor falls 13 months after the previous reading, there is Rabbinic discussion over the potential obligation to have a special reading a month early so that no twelvemonth is Zachor-free. Ultimately, in those years we rely on the reading of those verses when they appear at the end of Parashat Ki Tetze.

According to some authorities, Parashat Parah is also a Torah requirement and special attention should be taken (Shulchan Aruch OC 146:2 / 685:7) though the Mishna Berura (146:13 / 685:15) holds with those opinions that it is Rabbinic. Nonetheless, particular attention should be paid

and, in some communities, Parah was only leined by older Baalei Keriah.

The Maftir of Parah (Bemidbar 19:1-22) explains the purification process necessary to cleanse oneself from ritual impurity so that one can bring the sacrificial offerings into the Temple. Essential to this were the ashes of the rare red heifer. The preparation of the ashes is described as a Chok, one of those laws which we could not evince nor explain through the logic that it benefits society, the Mishpatim, or reminds us of Hashem’s Agency in our history, the Eiduyot). Counterintuitively, the preparation of the cleansing ashes renders the person who does the preparation tamei (ritually impure).

In the recent monthly “Chance to Remember and Reflect” we looked at coping with smachot and chagim without a loved one – these are particularly difficult times when we remember or would most wish for their presence. Our next meeting will be Sunday 25th March at 9am. There’s no need to RSVP but it is helpful if you let Rochelle in the office know that you are interested.

Also, please be in touch with us if you know of people who require any particular assistance over Pesach or if you are able to host or assist others over this time.

My next “Monthly Munch” with the pre-Bar / Bat Mitzvah group will be Sunday 18th March at 9am. It is great to see some of the families joining us for Shacharit and some of the young men in their still-shiny Tefillin!

Please do sign up for the Berlin Trip 10-11 June. Closing date for bookings is 14th March.

Shabbat Shalom

Rabbi Jeremy Lawrence

THIS WEEK’S HAFTORAH BY RABBI ANDREWS This week’s Haftorah from the 36th chapter of Yichezkel (Ezekiel) is paired with the special Maftir reading for Parshat Parah. In this Haftorah, the prophet tells us that God is concerned with the reputation of His name. For His sake alone God will bring the people back together and purify them. God will give them a new heart, and return the holy spirit to them so that the people follow and faithfully observe God’s laws. God will also purify them: “I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be clean” (36:25).

When the people have been gathered in the Land of Israel, there will be abundant grain crops, and trees filled with fruit so that the people will never again be humiliated in front of the other nations. Ruined places will be rebuilt, and small settlements will be full of people. Thus, the peoples around Israel will see the rewards that God bestows upon his nation.

In the final two verses of the haftarah God promises to multiply the people “like sheep” and this he will do for “their sake” (36:37). Jerusalem will be full of people who will all know that the Lord is God.

This reading is thematically connected to Parshat Parah. Parshat Parah presents an ancient rite of purification for those who have come in contact with the dead. The Haftorah foretells how Israel will be purified by God, and in fact brought back to life with a new heart and a new spirit.

If you find yourself at Kinloss over the course of the day, please stop by the office to say hello! I can usually be found there during the regular office hours (except Thursday).
