Learning, via the internet, is a flexible
and convenient method of learning, and is
already transforming the world of study.
It is hugely popular in the United States,
where more than three million people are
studying online. Online learning provides a
cost-effective, high-quality and flexible way
to study.
The Kaplan Open Learning degree
programme is so much more than
distance learning with email!
At Kaplan Open Learning we offer tutor-led
online degrees that closely replicate a
traditional campus classroom except that
you have far greater choice when deciding
how, when and where you study. The tutor
leads the class by delivering seminars,
posting lessons and assignments, answering
questions, marking assignments and
interacting with students on a regular basis.
However, unlike in a traditional classroom,
the communication between you and your
tutor occurs on online discussion boards, which are located on the platform. You
submit questions or comments to the
discussion board, and fellow students
and the tutor submit their answers and
comments to the initial posting.
You dont need any technical knowledge
to participate in online learning. A free-of-
charge technical telephone support line is
available to all students, which is staffed
by IT advisers seven days a week. There is
also the opportunity to have regular contact
with your tutor by telephone as you progress
through your course and to interact with
other students on the programme through
online forums.

Post your initial contribution on the

WHY STUdY WITH US?
Studying for a Foundation
Degree is more affordable
for me than going to

flexibility of the Kaplan
Open Learning course
means I can continue to
work while I study.
The main reason that you will choose to study with Kaplan Open Learning is that you can
earn a degree from a leading UK university, with the associated improvements in career
prospects and that great sense of achievement and personal pride for you, your friends
and your family when you graduate. At the same time, we recognise that there are many
institutions offering Foundation Degrees and you need to make sure that the programme,
the institution and the way that you learn and are assessed are right for you.
In designing this programme we spoke to employers and to working adults who did not
progress to higher education when they left school.
Over 50% told us they wished they had gone on to higher education and this is what they
would want from the programme:

What is a Foundation Degree?
Foundation Degrees were established by
the government in 2001 and provide a
means of integrating study and work-based
learning. They offer a higher education
qualification, equivalent to the first two
years of an Honours Degree.
Foundation Degrees consist of two levels,
each earning 120 credits. Some Foundation
Degrees offer a choice of different pathways
at level 2. You benefit from combining
work-based learning with specialist subject
areas to build essential knowledge, vital
skills and critical awarness necessary to
develop further in your existing career or
make a career change.
Entry requirements
All entrants, whatever their age or extent
of work experience, do need to have GCSE
grade C or above, or its equivalent, in Englishand Mathematics. If English is not your
first language, IELTS (Academic) 6.0 or
equivalent is required.
Academic
In addition to the above you must have,
as a minimum, one of the following:
one full A Level
an Advanced GNVQ, NVQ or other similar
vocational qualification
an Advanced Modern Apprenticeship that
includes vocational qualifications similar
to the above
Experience
If you do not meet the minimum academic
standards, you will need to demonstrate
that you are currently working and have a
minimum of one year of employment in an
environment where a significant element of
the work is in areas identified in the modules
in the Foundation Degree. You will also need
to demonstrate that lack of prior qualifications
is not a fair reflection of aptitude for higher
education. We assess this by talking to you
and reviewing your employment history and
the quality of your application form. We may
require you to complete additional basic
literacy and numeracy tests prior to
acceptance onto the programme.
Work-based learning modules
A Foundation Degree gives you the unique
opportunity to demonstrate the application
of theories learned in specialist modules
to real work situations. The modules are
supported by a work based learning tutor
and, where possible, a work place mentor.
The work-based modules will start once all
or most of the specialist modules have
been completed, to ensure that you can
apply a broad range of specialist skills to
the chosen project.
Initial discussions will take place betweenyou, your tutor and your mentor to identify
an issue in the workplace appropriate for
an in depth study that will be of real benefit
to you and your employer. You will undertake
a unique work-based learning assignment.
For example, a student on a Business
Internet Marketing course, working in a
small business, may choose to review their
workplace internet marketing strategy by:
Undertaking market research amongst
customers and reviewing competitors
strategies to establish opportunities that
exist to improve internet marketing
opportunities in the organisation
Developing a business plan, designing a
website and project managing an identified
area of internet marketing to turn the theory
into practice
Writing a report explaining findings and
recommendations
Degree Classification
Each module is assessed separately and
the marks are averaged to determine the
final award:
Distinction: an average of 70% or higher
Merit: an average of 60% or higher
Pass: an average of 40% or higher
Assessment
Unlike some higher education awards, you
will always be aware of your current provi-
sional grade right from the start of the
programme, allowing you to evaluate the
success of your current study methods and
clearly identify areas to improve. We
believe that the transparency gives you the
information you need to make the most of
your course. We achieve this by:
Visibility of your marks using the Kaplan
gradebook, which can be viewed
whenever you log onto the learning
platform
Rapid turnaround of work to ensure that
your gradebook is always up to date
Assessing you throughout the module
rather than waiting for end of year exams
Kaplan Open Learning has a policy of
ensuring that work submitted by
students is authentic. As well as the fact
that all work is frequently assessed, we
use a well established electronicmonitoring system to check for
plagiarism
Regular contact with your academic
adviser
Simplicity and transparency in the design
of assessment criteria

I have always regretted not going to university, and up until recently never thought it was possible
to fit a course around my hectic lifestle. I'm married, work full time and have a four year old daughterso the course had to be flexible and affordable. I am currently employed as an Events Manager and
I wanted a course that would enhance my business and management skills, regardless ofthe industry or role that I worked in.
