FoundATion’s MEssAgE

Temple Israel’s Foundation has just completed another successful year of investing, saving, and supporting the important programs offered by our Temple. Your donations have made a difference! Here are a few highlights of our year:

y As of our March 31 reports, our Foundation has a principal balance of $1.5 million.

y The Foundation purchased a $150,000 loan from F&M Bank that was owed by the Temple. Clearing this loan helped pave the way for the construction loan we needed. Now, the Temple pays their loan payment to the Foundation which in turn invests this money to earn additional interest that will ultimately benefit the Temple;

y We gave the highest amount of gifts and scholarships to the Temple in recent history including:•$1,400 from the Lapid Fund and the Lemmerman Fund for the 8th Grade New York Trip•$32,000 from the Ruth Davis Fund for the 2011-12 year for Torah Center Scholarships•$23,000 unrestricted gift to the Temple for the 2011-12 year; •These gifts totaled $56,400 disbursed to help Temple Israel this past year, and for the year we are now starting, your Foundation has approved and will be disbursing an unrestricted gift to the Temple of $38,000, an increase of $15,000!

None of this happened by accident, and all of this took tremendous effort and support. I would like to thank first and foremost our donors. They are an amazing group of individuals who are committed to providing support for Temple Israel for generations to come. Thank you to our Foundation Board of Trustees for their diligence and hard work this past year. What an incredible team! A special acknowledgement goes out to Joan Leb who joined our board and pitched in this year while the library was under construction. Joan will be leaving our Board to focus on the monumental job of setting up the new library. I would also like to thank Rabbi Moskowitz, Eric Shatzkin, the Temple staff, Amy Lipeles, and the Temple Board of Trustees for their support and assistance throughout the year.

Sadly, we lost a dear friend and former Trustee, Mike Masters, this year. Our hearts go out to his wife, Carol, and his friends and family. He will be greatly missed. As we move ahead to a new year and a new Temple, we will hold Mike in our hearts and work to live up to the legacy he left.

Now it is time to look ahead to a brand new year. This year is filled with promise and excitement as we move to our newly remodeled Temple. As we rededicate our Temple, may we too, rededicate ourselves to future generations who will occupy this building, filling it with prayer and song. If you like what you see this coming Fall, please consider leaving your own legacy to celebrate this magnificent accomplishment. Be certain that whatever your cause is, you make sure it can continue for generations to come. Any of our Board Members can help you or answer your questions. Have a great summer.

We are excited about moving into our redesigned library and unpacking our 169 boxes. We will need lots of help getting the books back on the shelves. We hope to be able to do this sometime at the end of August, so if you can give an hour or two to this project, please let me know. This is a great project for high schoolers who need some community service time.

We had a group of volunteer Torah Center parents who came in to the Library on Sunday mornings to help congregants and students use the computer to check out books. This year we hope to have regularly scheduled classes in the Library. If you were one of our past volunteers who would like to resume your work, or if you would like to help with this new phase, please let me know.

Zachary Mitchell Blum, son of Nancy and Lloyd Blum, brother of Gabriel, will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday morning, August 4.

My name is Zachary Blum, and I am a seventh grade student at Lexington Junior High School in Cypress. I am proud to be on the Assistant Principal’s Honor Roll. I am interested in aviation and collect model planes. For the past three years, I have played on hockey

teams at Anaheim Ice. In my free time I like to hang out with my friends, play Flight Simulator and walk my dog.

For my Mitzvah Project, I have been working as a volunteer after school at the Boys and Girls Club of Cypress helping younger children with their homework, playing games with them, and passing out snacks. I look forward to celebrating my simcha with my family, friends and Jewish community.

Elizabeth Lynne Osorio, daughter of Baltazar and Melissa Osorio and sister of Aubrianna and Caroline will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on August 11. Elizabeth is going into the eighth grade at Stanford Middle School where she is in the accelerated program. She attends Dance Company where she takes hip-hop, acro, jazz, and lyrical dance classes. For the last

year, she has been taking piano lessons. In her free time, she plays with her puppy, Luna, hangs out with friends, shops, and watches her favorite TV shows, Dance Moms and Cupcake Wars. Her absolute favorite hobby is baking cupcakes, which is why she chose “Cupcakes for a Cause” as her Mitzvah Project. Several times in the last two years, Elizabeth has baked and decorated hundreds of cupcakes for bake sales. To date, she has raised $600 for various charities, including the Jonathan Jacques Cancer Foundation and the Red Cross. Her next bake sale will benefit the Jane Goodall Foundation, which helps to save chimpanzees from extinction. Elizabeth is excited to share her Bat Mitzvah with her friends and family.

Dana Levy is a G.A.T.E. student at Stanford Middle School in Long Beach. She plays the violin in the Advanced and Chamber Orchestras at her school. Dana loves to draw, sculpt, and read, and spends much of her free time in this way. Dana also enjoys writing, and wrote a short fantasy novel for National Novel Writing Month in November of 2011. Dana loves

to kayak, rollerblade, skateboard, play volleyball, go to the beach, and do various activities with her friends.

Dana’s Mitzvah Project, “Thoughtful Thursdays,”was a program she created at her school. Every Thursday, students were asked for donations of nonperishable food items, which were then delivered by Dana and her mother to an organization called Centro Shalom. Centro Shalom distributes food and clothing to local families in need. This project, as well as her passion for recycling and “Going Green,” reflects the theme for Dana’s Bat Mitzvah, Tikkun Olam, or repairing the earth. Food donations will also be collected at Dana’s Bat Mitzvah Service.

This month I am focusing on Urban Community Outreach (UCO). Under their umbrella are two very successful programs: the Drop-In-Center (DIC) and Downtown Associated Youth Service (DAYS). Most Temple Israel members are familiar with and perhaps have worked with the Drop-In-Center, but may not be aware that one of the board of directors of DAYS is a member

of our temple, Andrea Friedenthal. On June 2nd, Andrea sponsored a table of Temple Israel congregants, Laura Snyder, Garth Begler, Janet and Harold Pottebaum, Andrea and Rob Friedenthal, and myself at their annual Summer in the City celebration. It is an organization you will want to participate with and support!

Urban Community Outreach (www.urbancommunityoutreach.org) was founded in 2006 to give a home to Downtown Associated Youth Service (DAYS) and the Sunday Drop-In Center (DIC). Both programs began under the auspices of the First Congregation Church until coming under the UCO umbrella. UCO has an 8 member board of directors, a mission rooted in compassionate service to those most in need, and a determination to successfully expand its two core programs. The organization’s mission is: To advance the interests and to promote the welfare of children, the economically disadvantaged, and homeless people in downtown Long Beach.

whErE urBAn coMMuniTy ouTrEAch sErvEsUCO serves two distinct subsets of the population in downtown Long Beach: underserved children and youth, and the homeless. DAYS serves 150 children and youth each year from poverty stricken and/or working poor families where academic achievement is a rarity -placing children at a distinct disadvantage in terms of educational success. According to the City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services, there are 1,755 homeless people on the streets every Sunday. The DIC serves nearly 22% of these individuals, providing meals to 350-400 homeless women, men and children each week. According to the following demographic information, Long Beach’s homeless consist of 46% African Americans, 16% Latinos, 29% Whites, 3% Asian/Pacific Islanders, 3% Native Americans and 3% other. An estimated 25% of the homeless in Long Beach are disabled and 20% are domestic violence victims. Veterans are twice as likely to be homeless as non veterans and the incidence of mental illness and substance abuse is significantly higher than in the community at large.

UCO’s programs are concentrated in the inner-city area surrounding First Congregational Church in Long Beach, our sister congregation, one of the most ethnically and socioeconomically diverse cities in the nation. This area is one of Long Beach’s poorest neighborhoods and has the highest concentration of

scic inTErFAiTh nEws -inTErFAiTh in AcTion!by roni Love

homeless in the city. Families living in the neighborhood deal with depressed income levels, overcrowded housing, and gang and narcotics problems. The City of Long Beach reports that these areas have the highest crime rates and unemployment numbers and the lowest levels of education in the city. U.S. Census Bureau statistics reflect that over 44% of the families in this area live below the poverty line, making Long Beach the third worst city in the United States for child poverty.

droP-in-cEnTErThe Drop-In-Center is a community center for homeless people and those in need, providing a nutritious meal, a 16 station computer lab, and a haven from the streets on Sunday afternoons. Please visit www.urbancommunityoutreach.org/ for more information.

downTown AssociATEd youTh sErvicEs (DAYS)DAYS was formed to meet the needs of downtown community children and youth, giving them a safe space where they can have access to inspiring programs and the opportunity to participate in tutoring, mentoring, college-bound workshops, and Summer Day Camp (offered free-of-charge), creating strong relationships and awakening the imagination. Please visit http://lbdays.org/ for more information.

TishA B’Av sTudy And sErvicE

Tisha B’Av, which means the “Ninth of Av,” refers to a traditional day of mourning the destruction of both ancient Temples in Jerusalem. In contrast to Orthodoxy, Reform Judaism has never assigned a central religious role to the ancient Temple. Therefore, mourning the destruction of the Temple in such an elaborate fashion did not seem meaningful. More recently, in Reform Judaism, Tisha B’Av has been transformed into a day to remember many Jewish tragedies that have occurred throughout history and provides an opportunity to consider ways to make peace within our community.

your help is needed to: • set-up/clean-up• prepare and serve the meal • visit with the guests• entertain• perhaps sort clothing • sponsor our barbecued chicken meal

these are very worthwhile tasks, and when the day is over you will have a wonderful, fulfilled feeling.

If you would like to volunteer, please contact Stephanie Bussi [email protected] or (562)436-6302

it’s barbecue time for the Drop-in-Center based at the First Congregational Church. Volunteers from our temple have been generous with their time each year for various dinners that we prepare and serve. Last summer we served an indoor barbecue and will continue the project this year. We will be working, as usual, with brad Lara-Gagne, the DiC’s chef and executive director. We need more volunteers for the barbecue, as well as members willing to join our committee to help sponsor the meal, either directly or by donating to temple israel’s homeless assistance Fund.
