Spring is upon us. And you know what that means. Days get longer. Flowers start blooming. Kids start counting down till the end of school.

And of course, it is time to renew our annual commitment to Temple Israel.I know what you’re thinking - “He must mean our membership packets will soon be in the mail. Thank goodness, I look forward to that every year!”

Ok, maybe that wasn’t your first thought. But I want to encourage you to take a look at the packet when it does arrive this year, before perhaps filing it with your other critical correspondence.

Under the goals set out in our strategic plan, we have had a committee, headed by our Treasurer and President-Elect Steve Keiles, taking a close look at our membership materials and our approach to dues. Across North America, many congregations within the Reform movement have been reconsidering the notions of “membership” and “dues”. Of course, across the movement, many congregations are facing some pretty significant challenges.

Here at Temple Israel we are enjoying a revitalization. The congregation is growing. Services are energetic, diverse, and well attended. Torah study is vibrant (and crowded!) week in and out. We are engaging our local community across numerous channels, including social action and community service. Our ANDI youth group is growing and inspiring not only our own community but other congregations as well. We are expanding our senior staff with the addition of Cantor Sara Hass to allow us to provide even more diverse and engaging experiences grounded in the wisdom of our heritage.

One might ask, “Why make changes now, when things are going so well?”

It is, in fact, this spiritual, social, and congregational growth which is motivating us to do more. Something great is happening here, and we want to make sure we are sharing it. And one key to this sharing, as Rabbi Moskowitz has challenged us, is to ensure our tent is as open as possible to any and all who may want to share the journey with us. So we’ve begun to focus on ways to lower the barriers that may be keeping people out.

One of those barriers, as many of us know, is the perceived and real “high cost of being an engaged Jew” here in Long Beach. Many who hear about Temple Israel inquire right up front, “How much does it cost to be a member?”.

To be clear, financial security is just as important as ever. While we’ve had a number of strong years, we cannot take that strength for granted. We must continue to make fiscally responsible

choices as a congregation to ensure our ability to deliver on our mission and vision.

But we don’t want to take that financial view so literally that we become a congregation defined by a ‘cost to join’.

Of course, we still have practical considerations. Maintaining our services and expanding our outreach does come with costs. We will continue to rely on all of our congregants to take an ownership interest in our financial security. We will still need those who can to go above and beyond, to help sustain our operations, and allow the doors to be opened wide. We will still ask for donations at High Holy Days, and, of course, we want to see you all at our Gala. We will continue to work to build the capacity of our Temple Foundation, to secure our future even more strongly.

Under this new model, we will invite all who join, as well as all who are already part of the congregation, to make an annual commitment at the level which both makes sense given their life situation, and also expresses their shared sense of ownership of our congregation - an ownership which gives each of us a sense of engagement in our journey imagining our future.

We’re changing a few words on our renewal forms - emphasizing renewal of a commitment to your congregation and community, and deemphasizing a ‘bill’ for ‘dues’. Of course this could be considered semantics. And it is definitely an experiment - one we will monitor closely over the coming months.

So please take a look at the new commitment form, find a quiet moment to reflect on your commitment to our Temple family, and join us in lowering the barriers a little further. I know the committee and board will welcome your feedback and thoughts as we embark on this transition.

Journey To JudaISM

The Torah is a story about hearing God’s call and choosing to embrace a sacred destiny. It is a story about journeys into a life of holiness. Every year Temple Israel conducts an Introduction to Judaism class, which offers those not born into Judaism a portal into a life of spiritual and ethical meaning framed by the wisdom of Jewish tradition. It is a profoundly transforming experience, not only for those who take the class but also for all of us as we are inspired by their sense of spiritual renewal through Judaism. One young woman who took the class said: “I was a seed. With Judaism I’ve become a rose.” Through this regular column, Journeys to Judaism, come to know the rich and vibrant garden that is blossoming here at Temple Israel through our Introduction to Judaism program.

My Journey To JudaISMPath to ConversionBy Gregg Von Fempe

My journey into Judaism had no clear starting point or transformative moment; but rather years of shared values and experiences.

My career as a clinical social worker within the non-profit world has kept me involved with issues related to social justice, inequality and community organizing. Throughout my career I have been fortunate enough to have many colleagues from the Jewish community. Additionally many friends were part of the Jewish

community and through their kindness I was included in many Jewish community celebrations. Celebrations within the Jewish community are rich with tradition, laughter and connection.

Community, and the sense of belonging and participation were essential components to my decision to convert to Judaism. A community where questioning and dialogue are as important as the rituals brings deeper understanding and meaning to one’s life. A community where learning and knowledge are present and encouraged brings opportunities to grow spiritually, personally and as a member of that community.

Throughout my time in the class setting with Rabbi Moskowitz, I began to understand how leading a Jewish life brought purpose and a sense of identity to one’s life. The traditions, rituals, history and collective experiences can be as present within the community of people who are Jews by choice as it is in the community of Jews by birth.

I am grateful to Rabbi Moskowitz for the wonderful way in which he makes people feel included and valued. I am thankful for the way in which he created in me the desire to belong to the Jewish community, a community that I take pride in joining.

Aaron Cherry is an honor student at Stanford Middle School in Long Beach. He is an amazing student, football player and wonderful brother and son. Aaron also enjoys spending time with his friends, playing video games, playing basketball and hanging with his family.

Aaron is compassionate and is always looking to help his fellow man. Along with his good friend Gus, Aaron has chosen as his Mitzvah Project to feed the homeless at Lincoln Park. The two shop for food, make lunches, pack

them, and then deliver them. It is something they will continue beyond Bar Mitzvah.

Aaron is so very thankful for all the guidance the Rabbi, teachers, and his peers from Temple Israel have shown him. He is looking forward to sharing his becoming a Bar Mitzvah with his friends and family.

My name is Valerie Elizabeth Hoffman and I am 12 years old. My bat mitzvah is May 16 and I am excited this day is coming. My hobbies include music, nature photography, drawing my own comics, astronomy, and studying various aspects of nature. I’ve been playing clarinet for two years, bass clarinet for one year, and guitar off and on for awhile. I look forward to band class every day and plan to continue, probably with even more instruments. I may even want to teach music when I grow up. But I am also considering a career as an astronomer

or a veterinarian.

I love my pets, Sugar and Tiki. I really like animals in-general, but cats are my favorite. I’ve been fortunate to travel quite a bit, to different states, and found my favorite trips were ones in which my family camped, in either the forest or the mountains. It’s very soothing to be in that type of environment for me, and I absolutely love the feeling of the great outdoors.

One of my Mitzvah Projects was volunteering at Longfellow Elementary School, for the after-school program. I assisted kids with their homework and tutored them in math. I also volunteered here at Temple Israel as a greeter at several Saturday Shabbat services, so you may recognize me.

I’m looking forward to sharing my bat mitzvah service with friends and family from different parts of the country. It’s pretty neat being the first girl in my Torah Center class going through the service. B’shalom.

Torah CenTer

The month of May will be a great one for ANDI. We will start out by inducting the TI eighth graders into the youth group and re-dedicating ANDI at Shabbat services on Friday, May 15th at 7:00 p.m. Please join us, if you’re able to attend. On Sunday, May 17, we will have a bake sale at the last day of Torah Center. We thank everyone in advance for supporting ANDI. On Sunday, May 31, we will have an installation lunch, where the old ANDI officers will transition out of their leadership positions, and our new leaders will be installed.

Next month, on June 19-20, we will have an ANDI “lock-in,” where we will sleepover at the Temple. We will watch movies, play games, and hold midnight and morning services. We would love for all current 8th-12th graders to join us for this event. If you have any questions about ANDI, please feel free to ask our advisor Kara Liu or one of the ANDI board members.

the Jewish holiday Lag Ba’Omer.

Families may recall that last year, many of our female students and teachers chose to participate in a ponytail cutting, and their hair was donated to Pantene Beautiful Lengths.

This year, although the hair will not be donated, we will be collecting tzedakah in appreciation of these brave young people (and adults!)

in support of the important work that St. Baldrick’s Foundation does to help in finding a cure for pediatric cancer.

TI SISTerhood

Of the many words that describe Natalie Swit, the two that ring most true are “caring” and “community.” And for many years, the Temple Israel Caring Community committee has been fortunate to have Natalie as its heart and soul. For this reason, and many more, Natalie was chosen to represent Temple Israel and Sisterhood for the VISIONS Award.

The Arlene Solomon VISIONS Event is the annual celebration of Women’s Philanthropy in Long Beach and

its main campaign event. On April 30th, a dozen women from Jewish organizations and temples throughout our community, were honored to receive this prestigious award. Temple Israel Sisterhood was so proud to have Natalie honored at this event.

Growing up in Washington D.C., Natalie’s family was a member of Temple Sinai, one of the most progressive Reform congregations in the United States, whose Rabbi, Eugene Lipman, marched with The Reverend Martin Luther King and helped establish the Religious Action Center in Washington, the social action arm of the Union of Reform Judaism. Natalie’s interest in Jewish communal activities was fostered by her relationships with Rabbi Lipman and other renowned congregational rabbis.

Natalie, and her longtime companion, Marty, moved to Long Beach in 1991. She was introduced to Temple Israel by Barbara and Leon Shoag. After becoming an adult Bat Mitzvah in 2005, Natalie became deeply involved in synagogue life. As a member of the Membership Committee, she coordinated new member dinners and the delivery of new member gift baskets; Yad B’Yad, which assists synagogue families with Bar and Bat Mitzvah celebrations; the Joys of Jewish Learning and Social Action committees, and most recently, Caring Community where she has assisted many congregants with meals of condolence and Shiva Minyanim. With the gift of helping those new to our community, she goes above and beyond to help connect them to others with similar interests. She believes her mission is not complete until newcomers feel part of Temple Israel’s “mishpacha.”

Natalie is deeply honored that she has been nominated by the Temple Israel Sisterhood to receive the Jewish Federation’s Women’s Division VISIONS Award. We are pleased and proud to honor her as a Woman of Vision who truly believes in both caring for individuals and her community. TI Sisterhood also wants to extend a kol h’kavod to all of the VISIONS nominees this year. We are blessed to be in a community of remarkable women.

neWS FroM The lIbraryby Joan Leb We were able to purchase over forty books from a Jewish book store in Libertyville, Illinois that is going out of business in June. That unfortunate event proved to be good fortune for the TI Library as the books were sold at 50% off the cover price.

Although most of the books were children and young adult books—we were able to fill in our collection of Sydney Taylor winners (the award given each year by the Association of Jewish Libraries) there are a number of adult titles also.

The STory ConTInueS: ProPheTS & ProVerbS

The Tanakh class that began in October, 2013 has studied the history of Israel from the entry into the Promised Land through the return from the Babylonian exile as written in Joshua, Judges, Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles. The group is now studying the Prophets. Since this is a lay-led group, everyone will have an opportunity to participate. No previous knowledge or experience is necessary; just a desire to learn. WoMen’S book ClubWednesday, May 13 at 7:30 p.m.

The fourth book of the 2014-2015 year is Sidonia’s Thread, The Secret’s of a Mother and Daughter by Hanna Perlstein. Linda Fenner has kindly agreed to be our facilitator for the evening.

With so many Holocaust memoirs being self-published, some important books can appear without being reviewed. This is one such book, written by the daughter of a survivor who was born in a DP camp. After the war, Sidonia and Hanna came to Springfield, MS, where Sidonia made a living as a seamstress. Hanna was the best-dressed girl in the community made up of other survivors. There was a secret Sidonia could not reveal to her daughter, but after her

death, Hanna found answers to questions that had haunted her for many years. The resolution of the mystery and the interesting manner in which the book is written, with chapters titled after sewing themes along with photographs and documents, make this work not only interesting reading about the lives of two extraordinary women, but one more important testimony to how lives were indelibly affected by World War II.

This month’s column is from the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism’s April 2015 issue.

As the House of Representatives considers the Student Success Act (H.R. 5), it is very likely that a harmful amendment could be introduced using taxpayer dollars to fund private education through a voucher program. School vouchers are bad public policy, diverting public money away from public schools and threatening the separation of church and state. A central principle of the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause is that members of particular faiths, and not the government, should fund religious institutions. Government funding for religious education undermines the First Amendment and harms religious liberty.

Background - Congress adopted Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act in 1965 to provide federal funding and support to local school districts and schools serving large concentrations of students in poverty. Now, the House of Representatives may consider changing the law to allow funds to “follow the child” to private schools - adding even more stress and challenge to struggling schools.

While a small number of students might be able to attend a different school due to a Title I voucher amendment, significantly more students would still be in an under-resourced school that would be even more disadvantaged. At the same time, students who receive a voucher could use that money to pay for private, parochial education – threatening the First Amendment’s separation of church and state. The government should instead invest its funds in programs that reinvigorate the public school system, rather than redirecting critical funds away from public schools and into private, frequently parochial schools.

Jewish Values - The URJ opposes all attempts to channel public funds to private and parochial schools. “The devotion of our Union to the separation of religion and state, and our equally deep commitment to public education as a cornerstone of the American democratic process, impel us to reaffirm our opposition to any form of governmental aid to elementary and secondary schools under the supervision or control of any religious denomination or sect — Catholic, Protestant or Jewish.”

As Rabbi Eric Yoffie, former President of the Union for Reform Judaism has said: “The public schools take the poor and the handicapped, the abused and the foster children, the Christian and the Muslim, the Roman Catholic and the Jew. They do more of God’s work in a day than most institutions do in a lifetime. Rabbi Nahman of Bratslav was the great-grandson of the founder of the Hasidic movement, the Baal Shem Tov.
