Τα φυσικά σφουγγάρια είναι θαλάσσιοι ζωντανοί οργανισμοί και αφού κοπούν. Όσο περισσότερο τα χρησιμοποιείς τόσο μαλακότερα γίνονται.

Skandalopetra Σκανταλόπετρα is a stone of marble or granite between 7-14 kilos with rounded sides and a hole at its upper part where a rope is fastened tightly. The other edge of the rope is securely tied up to the boat.

Skandalopetra diving technique or “skin sponge diving” is so ancient as the story of Greece. The depth, the time remaining in the bottom of the sea to cut sponges and the number of the sponges depended on the sponge diver’s lung capacity, the ability to hold the breath and experience as well.

In 1862AD Fotis Mastoridis from the island of Symi brought new diving equipment to Greece from Sri Lanka where he was working as an engineer which became popular as “skaphandro”.

a bronze helmet with a hole where a tube was connected providing air by a compressor on the boat while the sponge diver was in the sea.

a rope connecting the sponge diver with the boat that used to pull him back on the boat

The sponge trade became extremely prosperous and brought social and economical development to the Greek islands especially to Kalymnos.

Diving for sponges using the skaphandro

By the standard diving suit technique the sponge divers could dive in greater depth and for longer time. In practice this meant more sponges, more profits. But at the other hand they had got to face a lot of accidents and deaths caused by their lack of knowledge about the rules to dive underwater breathing compressed air either the wrong or overuse of the new equipment.

Decompression sickness or The Bends (diver’s illness) is a serious medical condition caused by returning too quickly to the surface of the sea when diving with breathing equipment.

The use of skaphandro brought not only a wealth of sponges and riches to the Greek islands but also 20000 paralysed divers and 10000 deaths as well from 1866 up to 1915 due to the bends.

Ο μηχανικός Μηχανικό λέγανε στην Κάλυμνο τον σφουγγαρά που βουτούσε με τη «μηχανή» δηλαδή με σκάφανδρο. Είναι μιμητικός, αντρικός χορός και είναι αφιερωμένος στους "χτυπημένους" ή "πιασμένους" από τη νόσο δύτες. Ο πρωτοχορευτής μιμείται τον ημιπαράλυτο δύτη που επιθυμεί και προσπαθεί να χορέψει. In Lemnos the sponge diving started in 1926 when Asian Minor refuges from the island of Koutali (now Ekinlik) in the sea of Marmara settled in Lemnos and named their new village Nea Koutali.

The competitions are held only in deep clear crystal sea waters. During the games and at every dive: on the boat: a medical team is always present to give the first aids and underwater: at every 10m there are watch divers with breathing apparatus to secure the athlete if a problem comes up.
