Sunshine Bay Boat Launch RepairedMembers of the West Arm Outdoors Club (WAOC) have
repaired the boat launch facility at Sunshine Bay Regional Park that the club built a number of years ago.
Using a grant from the Regional District of Central Koote-nay, their own funds and the generosity of local businesses, WAOC members built a form to re-do the concrete part of the launch, then replaced decking, siding and bumpers damaged from a July storm last year. Th e concrete was poured recently and the launch is again available for use by boaters in the Out-let area.
“While not all the decking was replaced a considerable amount of it was, and it’s a much better facility in every way,” said WAOC president Gord Grunerud. “ A lot of the siding was damaged and needed replacing. Much of the decking was worn, so it was time to replace that too.”
Companies and individuals who assisted in making the project a success included Nelson Ready Mix for their dona-tion of part of the concrete costs, Don Faust Construction for the forms and assistance, Harrop-Procter Forest Products for the discounted lumber, and KVR and Nick Dosenberger for their preparatory work.
All labour was donated and, as Grunerud points out, re-pairing the boat launch was not only benefi cial to the greater community, it also fulfi lls the purpose of the club – which is to take on projects that improve local recreational opportunities.
“We had a really good turnout, our partners were excellent, and now we’re moving forward with our next project which is the fi shing platform in Procter. We received all the necessary approvals in late April, so we’re focused on that project now that the boat launch is repaired.”
Th e West Arm Outdoors Club meets most months on Wed-nesday evenings, starting at 7 pm at the Harrop Hall. All area residents are invited to join the club; there is no cost to be a member.

that delves into one remote community’s radical resist-ance to a proposed copper mine that would level and de-stroy their way of life forever.
Set in the isolated cloud forest of the northern Andes Mountains, the fi lm is narrated by the founders and chil-dren of Junin, who depict how the village’s daily life has been aff ected by the rich ore deposit that was discovered beneath their land.
Suddenly these once peaceful farmers fi nd themselves thrust into a dangerous world of corruption, murder and arson as they fi ght tenaciously to protect their land and families. Two mining companies are increasingly brazen in their attempts to infi ltrate and control the area, and in response, the community unites in resistance in order to survive.

RCMP Warn Of Money Wiring ScamTh e Nelson RCMP detachment is urging caution if you
get unexpected cheques in the mail.Th e RCMP were warned by a Nelson area resident, who
was solicited about what was portrayed as potential em-ployment as a so-called “Customer Service Evaluator.” Th e individual who tipped off police received a cheque for about $4,000, and was directed in writing to deposit the money into a personal bank account, and then spend a portion with certain local institutions. Aft er these trans-actions, the scam requested sending the remainder of the funds by money gram to a specifi ed location.
Th e RCMP is reminding the public to remain guarded when sending money to unknown sources. Any suspected scams can be reported to local police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
