Submitted At 3:20 am, Jan 11, police were called to the Regalane Bowling in Kimberley after an alert resident heard a crashing sound. Upon attendance police located and ar-rested a 23 year old male from Cranbrook.

The witness heard a crash and called police, she was able to update police and direct them to the subject. He was caught inside the busi-ness, but at another door.

Damage to the doors was over $700 but noth-ing was taken thanks to the quick action from the caller. The bowling alley is located on Ar-chibald Street in Kim-

berley. The subject has been released and will attend court in March.

Police appreciate the efforts of citizens who call when they observe suspicious activity.

If you’re a fan of winter sports, you’ll save time and perhaps money too if you shop for sports equipment close to home. Why go through the hassle of driving long distances or losing hours to browsing on the Web

when you can find everything you need locally? Buying sports equipment from a local business is so practical: it’s easier to get refunds, exchanges, repairs, and advice. Everything you need is close at hand.

Winter sports lovers know that it’s important to have equipment that is good quality, well adjusted, and expertly maintained — it’s the only way to be assured that you can practice your sport as safely as

possible. A binding has come off one of your skis? One of your skates needs a new blade? You need something new to improve your comfort or your performance level? By buying locally, you can take advantage of these

types of service without having to drive to the box stores or order “blind” from the Internet. By buying locally, you have a better chance of getting personalized service, from choo sing the equipment right through to maintaining it.

But that’s not all. Salespeople who work in local stores are often

a great source of local knowledge. They might be able to help you discover new places to practice your sport accor ding to your level of expertise. And in a hometown shop, you might even find yourself being served by the manager! That’s exactly what buying local means: quality products and attentive, profes

sional ser vice, provided in a friendly and courteous atmosphere.

Buying locally is increasingly important; it contributes to the economic prosperity of our area and is in everyone’s best interest. This winter, be sure to make the most of the pleasures of life by shopping close to home.

When loved ones pass away, the pain of the loss can leave fam-ily members feeling paralyzed and over-whelmed. Nonetheless, in many cases, spouses and children left behind are faced with the need to make numerous de-cisions rather than an opportunity to start the healing process.

Daryl Houser esti-mates there are around 50 decisions to be made around the funer-al arrangements alone. Together with his wife Barb, he works with people who want to make pre-arrangements for their own funeral or cremation.

The Housers repre-sent FamilySide and Purple Shield and work with funeral homes in the East and West Koo-tenay. They get peo-ple’s wishes into a file that will be there when the time comes, so so

the family members are not wondering what their loved one would have wanted.

“Most people do it, because they want to make a difficult time easier for their fam-ily or loved ones,” said Barb Houser. There are numerous options for people and the couple can walk inter-ested people through them in a complimen-tary consultation. They also provide a 24-page guide book that out-lines all the details and that clients can use to discuss options with their family members.

Barb Houser says there are three main benefits for the per-son who makes pre-

arrangements. They have it their way, they are able to give a gift to their family and they have the peace of mind that things are orga-nized. “People feel a huge sense of relief that that’s all taken care of,” Barb Houser describes her clients’ reactions after making the ar-rangements.

The gift to the loved ones left behind is two-fold. For one, the fam-ily has the emotional relief that all decisions

are made. Secondly, there is a financial ben-efit. In British Colum-bia, a pre-arrangement locks in the price for a funeral to the rate when the plan is put in place. This is important in an area where prices have historically doubled ev-ery ten years, explains Barb Houser. Addition-ally, clients can get a travel plan to ensure everything is taken care of, world-wide.

To get more informa-tion on FamilySide / Purple Shield, contact a funeral home of your choice and they will get you in touch with Barb and Daryl Houser.

Happy Houseplants

Houseplants are a great addition to any home; they clean the air and give any space a homey feel. Given the proper care, houseplants thrive and need very little extra attention. Sometimes, however, we notice a sudden decline, maybe the plants look droopy or the edges of some leaves are starting to turn yellow or curl. This might be the sign of a serious problem and it’s important we check into it immediately to avoid a larger problem. One common houseplant problem, especially in the winter months, is an infestation of spider mites.

Spider mites are among the most serious houseplant pests. Left untreated, they can multiply rapidly, causing injury, leaf drop and even death of your plants. They’re not true insects, but - as their name suggests - are more closely related to spiders and ticks. Spider mites thrive in dry, warm conditions. They mostly feed on the undersides of leaves and expand their territory as populations increase, moving from stem to stem and onto nearby plants creating fine webbing.

Spider mites are almost invisible to the naked eye. To verify that your plant has indeed been taken over by spider mites, place a sheet of white paper under the discoloured leaves. Tap the leaves and watch for tiny moving creatures on the paper. You can also spot them by taking a close look at the underside of a leaf and watching for moving specks.

The first step in the war against spider mites is a good inspection of the plant. It is a good idea to check for possible problems regularly as you water and periodically stop and give your plants a good inspection. This will help you to catch any problems before they become an infestation and by frequently inspecting your plants, you will become quite attune to any variations in their health.

Spider mites like dry air, so increasing the humidity for your plants will aid in keeping the spider mite population down. This is especially important if you heat with wood heat. Also keep any plant tools and watering cans clean and disinfect them after each use if you have an infestation to prevent spread of disease and insects.

Washing the plants frequently with clean, cool water to remove any dust or insects can also be beneficial. The size of the plant or weather conditions might prevent you from wrestling your plants into the shower or hose them off outside, but even a good wiping with cool water and a cloth will go a long ways. Also clean up any leaves and other plant debris.

Another good preventative measure is to avoid placing your plant over top or in close vicinity to heat vents. The heat from the vents has a drying effect on the plant and will promote the conditions that the spider mites find ideal.

Sometimes, however, those pesky spider mites still rear their ugly heads, no matter how diligent we inspect, humidify and clean. There are several products available to combat the mites. Pyrethrin-based insecticidal sprays or insecticidal soap can be used as a chemical treatment. Not all plants can be treated with these products, so check if your plant can be sprayed before applying any chemicals.

You can think about releasing beneficial insects and let good bugs eat the bad bugs. We can help you determine the best predator bug for your plants.

If you have doubts about what is bugging your plants, bring a sample in and the friendly and helpful staff at Top Crop can identify your problem and help you find a solution.

Till next time... happy gardening.Submitted by Tara

It was all smiles for East Kootenay Founda-tion for Health’s Starlite Campaign when Mari-lyn Christensen (aka PT the Clown) arrived with a gift of $500 for regional hospital’s pedi-atrics unit.

The lovable and tal-ented PT the Clown donated a portion of the proceeds from the December PT the

Clown’s Magic Show held on December 8 at the Key City Theatre. The magical Christmas party included a visit by The Christmas Prin-cess Amanda Musso and was full of singing, dancing and a fabulous magic show.

PT the Clown—en-tertaining kids and sup-porting kids—that is the true magic of her Christmas show.

The 2012 Starlite

Campaign for Excel-lence in Health Care is focused on celebrat-ing donors who are the foundation’s stars. Launched in November with the star sponsor East Kootenay Commu-nity Credit Union the campaign lit all 17 stars atop the regional hospi-tal to celebrate the gen-erosity of donors who helped bring the A Clear View campaign to com-pletion thirteen months early. As of 04 Janu-

ary the campaign has surpassed over $90,000 in donations to various areas of health care and facilities.

A donation to EKFH in support of a specific cause or for the area of greatest need makes a difference in the qual-ity of health care in the East Kootenay. To learn more about the many funds EKFH holds in trust visit www.ekfh.ca.

Take the intimidation out of writing grant ap-plications by spending a couple of hours with Columbia Basin Trust (CBT). This winter, CBT’s community li-aisons are hosting De-veloping and Funding Your Community Proj-ect Workshops in eight locations in the region.

“These workshops are ideal for people who would like to learn more about develop-ing a project idea into a funding proposal,” said Gary Ockenden, CBT Director, Community Initiatives. “Not only will you come to un-derstand the elements of developing your idea, and tips and tools for preparing an appli-cation, you’ll also learn about building rela-tionships and securing partnerships in order to increase your chances of success.”

Participants will cover topics like how

to focus your project idea, develop a bud-get and write clearly. You’ll also learn how to identify appropriate funders, and receive an overview of CBT’s own granting programs.

The workshops will be in Kimberley on January 31 at the SPARK Lees Youth Centre from 7 to 9 p.m. and in Invermere at the Columbia Valley Chamber Lion’s Hall from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Email an RSVP to [email protected] for either of those work-shops.

If you’d like a work-shop scheduled in your community, phone 1.800.505.8998 or email [email protected]. For more information, visit www.cbt .org/grant-writing.

Best described as a number crossword, the task in Kakuro is to fill all of the empty squares, using numbers 1 to 9, so the sum of each horizontal block equals the number to its left, and the sum of each vertical block equals the number on its top. No number may be used in the same block more than once.

Public Safety Responsibility of All This Winter Improving the safety of the public is behind the City of Cranbrook campaign asking residents and businesses to help keep your streets and sidewalks clear of snow and ice this winter.“Regularly clearing ice and snow from your sidewalks and driveways will allow much easier access to your property by the fire department, RCMP or paramedics should an accident or other emergencies happen.” says Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services Chief Wayne Price.Residents are also encouraged to avoid pushing or blowing snow from their sidewalks, driveways and any windrows back into the street, after the City plows have been by. Clearing snow is not just the responsibility of the City Public Works department, which does the best they can with the resources available to keep the community moving during the winter months. Responsibility also lies with each resident and business owner to help clear around their home or business. “During and following major snowfalls, our snow removal operation runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and operates with a small fleet of vehicles; four salt/sand trucks with belly plows, two graders and two loaders.” says Public Works Director Joe McGowan. “With this schedule and the equipment we have, it is reasonable to expect most areas of the City to be cleared within 3 or 4 days of a snowfall, depending on the amount of snow and how fast it comes down.”

City of Cranbrook Snow Removal PolicyAs this winter season approaches, we want to remind you of the City of Cranbrook current Snow and Ice Control procedures to better understand why the City clears snow the way it does. The policy in place clearly identifies four levels of priorities for streets for City crews to follow: STREETSClassification “A” – FIRST PRIORITYMajor streets, hospital zones, roads that access emergency service facilities, roads with severe grades and transit routes will be cleared first. In some instances, snowfall is heavy enough and continual during the plowing process, that once these routes are cleared crews need to start them over again. That often causes a delay in getting to other areas of the City.Classification “B” – SECOND PRIORITYThis includes collector streets, the central business district and school zones.Classification “C” – THIRD PRIORITYThis includes other residential streets within the City whose immediate need for snow and ice control is not as important. OBITUARYCOLE, Harry Aylsworth

July 10 1937 - December 30 2012With family by his side, Harry peacefully passed away at home in the loving arms of his wife Dorothy, of 55 years. Also left “holding the shop down” are his children Cherie (Guido), David (Sherie), Christine, Michele (Eric) Grandchildren Bradly, Aimee, Andrew, Jason, Bryanna & Janelle Great grandchildren, Kassandra

& Kaden Sisters Shirley & Joan and Helper, Ken. Harry was born in Cherry Valley, Ontario to Norma & Murney Cole (deceased). In 1960, Harry packed up his wife & first born child & headed out to the wild west! They landed in a small unknown but very friendly little town in the East Kootenays called Jaffray. Three children later, Harry worked hard to provide for his growing brood. There he learned all of his construction trades & soon became the local handy fix-it-all man & beloved member of the community. With the beautiful mountainous surroundings, Harry’s biggest pas-sions became fishing, getting fire wood, standing on bear guard as we picked huckleberries & hunting. In 1980 Harry moved once again, this time to Westside Road in Vernon in the sunny Okanagan. Years later at the early age of 46, he had his first heart attack & was forced into early retire-ment. By this time Harry had become friends with many people on the Reservation & his days were never lonely. There was always someone that wanted his companion-ship & expertise. Of course after a hard day at play, a nice cigar & a good Happy Hour was always welcomed! Harry was a man of few words but when they came out, every word was worth listening to. How we now long for just one word. Harry was a big presence in everyone’s lives & he is deeply missed already. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

Welcome Tim

TimGolds

The management and staff of the Kootenay

Import Auto Group are pleased to welcome

Tim Golds to their sales team at Hillcrest

Hyundai.

Tim and his family moved to Kimberley 5 years ago from the south coast of England. Having purchased a ski hill condo in Kimberley a few years prior, they

fell in love with the area and chose to make the East Kootenay their permanent residence.

As a former business owner and electronics design engineer, you can be sure that Tim understands

attention to detail and customer satisfaction, not to mention technical innovations present in

today’s’ automobiles.Stop by today and let Tim Golds show you why

Hyundai is one of the fastest growing auto manufacturers in the world.

Cranbrook Dodge is pleased to commence 2013 with the continued addition of Norm Zulps in the

position of Service Manager for their full-line Dodge, Chrysler, Ram & Jeep dealership.

He joined the team in May of 2012, and has been an integral part of continuing to build on our valued

reputation within the community.Norm grew up in North Vancouver, and has

always had a keen interest in cars, motorcycles and woodworking.

His dealership experience began with Regency Chrysler in 1988, where he progressed from Service

Advisor to Tower Operator to Service Manager. In 1995 he and his wife moved to Kelowna as they started their family, where he took the position of

Service Manager at Scott Chrysler (now Okanagan Dodge) and continued there until 2004.

He changed career paths into the construction eld, but the pull of the fast pace and customer contact of the auto industry was too strong.

Norm jumped at the opportunity to join the team at Cranbrook Dodge as Service Manager when it was offered to him by his long-time friend Dave

Girling, in May of 2012. He and his wife Kathy and two daughters are looking forward to continuing to

explore Cranbrook and the surrounding Kootenay area, andbecoming part of the community. It just may take a bit to break him of his 17 years of cheering for the Rockets when attending our Kootenay Ice games.

A weekend of class-room and fi eld work in frigid conditions paid off for eight Jaffray Firefi ghters and one Sparwood Search and Rescue member this weekend as they re-ceived their Ice Rescue Technician Certifi cation.

The training took place

in Jaffray and the fi eld component took place on, and in, Tie Lake. The Fire Department was able to train with their new ice rescue equip-ment, which was made possible thanks to gen-erous donations by the Sand Creek Lions, Wen-dy and Willie Charl-ton and their family (in memory of their son/

brother David Charlton, Jaffray Volunteer Fire Department Society and RDEK Electoral Area B Discretionary Grant in Aid. The Lions, who presented a cheque for $3,000 and many of the other donators were out on the ice Saturday af-ternoon watching the participants learn the basics of self and com-panion rescue. In total, $9,000 was donated for the purchase of the new equipment.
