S outh Korea and the U.S. announced a controversial decision in July 2016 to deploy a missile defense sys- tem, Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), in Seongju, S.Kor. THAAD was meant to deter aggression from North Korea, which held ballistic missile tests during the year. In April parliamentary elec- tions, Pres. Park Geun-Hye’s conservative Saenuri Party lost its long-held majority. Park’s fortunes sank further when her longtime confidant, Choi Soon-sil, was arrested on suspicion of using her connection to Park to peddle influence. Hundreds of thou- sands took to the streets in protest, and on December 9, Park was impeached by the National Assembly. Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn was named acting president pending ratification of the impeachment by the Consti- tutional Court. Demography Population (2016): 51,619,375.
