History and Administration
– NLM’s collection began in 1836 as the Library of the Office of the Surgeon General of the Army
– Moved to its current location in Bethesda, Maryland in 1962
– Part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which is under the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS)
– Current director of NLM is Donald A.B. Lindberg, MD (since 1984)

Features– The world’s largest bio-medical library
– Mandated to collect biomedical materials from all over the world and in all languages
– Provides research services in all areas of biomedicine and health care
– Provides interlibrary loan services via the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (http://nnlm.gov)

Collects materials very broadly in biomedicine, health care, history of medicine, biomedical aspects of the humanities, physical, social and life sciences

NLM StaffNLM Staff in in Technical Services Technical Services Division (TSDDivision (TSD) )
Total at NLM in FY2008: 671 FTE. Within TSD, five (5) professional staff working on CJK materials
– Two selectors in the Selection and Acquisition Section, each responsible for Chinese and Japanese/Korean
– Three catalogers in the Cataloging Section: two are responsible for Korean monographs and serials cataloging and one for Chinese monographs and serials.
– Also several technicians supporting CJK acquisitions and processing (monographs and serials)

Chinese materials: 350 books dating before 1910
– Acquired from Henri Vetch, a Belgian who owned the French Bookstore of Beijing in the 1930s and 1940s
Japanese materials: about 200 books, manuscripts and pieces of ephemera dating before 1911
– Acquired the majority from Charles Tuttle in 1948, a young American book dealer who was sent to Japan at the close of World War II with the U.S. military.
