SPRING MOUNTS BACKGROUNDVMC offers a broad range of spring isolation mountingsand hangers that will limit the transmission of vibration, impact and noise over a variety of applications fromengine gensets and small fans to heavy duty HVACequipment and industrial machinery. Vibration and insta-bility can shorten the life of any equipment, as well ascause unsuitable noise disturbances. The VMC spring-based products are designed to diminish these factors.
The heart of the VMC spring mounts and hangers are the actual spring coils. Thespring coils are designed for low operating stresses and excellent lateral stability ensuring long-life both for the springs and the isolated equipment. VMC spring coilsare made of different metals depending on the application requirements. Oil-tem-pered high carbon steel is standard for most springs. However, softer springs madeof stainless steel are available for lighter applications.
To further long-life and durability, mostVMC springs have a powder-coated finish. This finish is offered in numerous colors foreasy identification in the factory and in thefield. Powder-coated finishes have replacedliquid or painted finishes for a variety of rea-sons. Liquid finishes can have sags, runs, drips, bubbles, and offer an overall poorfinish. Powder-coated finishes are smooth, uniform and durable providing a superior,long-lasting finish.
VMC offers some spring mounts with mini-mal added structures. Examples are ourAC, ADC, and ADHC series. Simple, free-floating top caps and cup bases provideattachment points and leveling adjustment.Elastomer spring cups afford high frequency noise attenuation. Hanger boxes areunique housings that give tension-loading capability to a compression spring. OtherVMC spring mounts nest the compression springs within engineered metal hous-ings. These not only provide a means of attachment to the surrounding structures,
but also may provide restraint in a number of directions and damping. This restraint and damping may or may not be field adjustable, depending on isolator series and option.
The spring mount and housing, and therefore its series and options, must be carefully selected for the mounts intended usage. VMC offerscast iron for common usage, and high strength, all-welded steel forhigh-load and critical applications. All coil springs, whether housed orun-housed, restrain motion in the springs compressive direction.Housings may add restraint in a perpendicular plane. Fully restrainedhousings, such as for seismic and marine applications, further providerestraint in the upward, tension direction. Depending on series and jobspecifics, a number of housing finishes are available. These includepowder coat, paint and hot-dip zinc galvanize.
Our ongoing product development and improvement ensures thatevery installation is correctly designed and accurately manufactured toprovide the maximum efficiency needed for any application.

DESIGN & APPLICATIONSThe purpose of a resilient mounting system is to pro-vide flexibility in the form of a mounting system thatconverts energy into a more manageable form. By pro-viding deflection, the energy of the vibrating equipmentis released over a longer period. Theory shows that asthe operating speed of the equipment increases, therequired deflection to absorb this energy decreases. For example, a heavy, sudden shock requires a higherdeflection than a constant running engine.
The amount of energy that passes through a mount ismeasured as a percentage of the vibration energy pro-duced by the equipment. This factor is called transmis-sibility. It is also possible to increase the energy throughthe mounting system. For this increase, we use theterm amplification. Though, for most systems wherethe energy is decreased, we use the term attenuation.A properly designed isolation system will attenuate thevibrations to a level necessary for the application.
To measure transmissibility we need to know thedeflection or natural frequency of the isolation system. To calculate the natural frequency of the isolation sys-tem, when given the operating deflection in inches, weuse this equation:
Natural Frequency, (Hz) = 9.8DeflectionOnce we know the disturbing frequency (fd) and naturalfrequencies (fn), we can now calculate the transmissi-bility. For isolation systems without damping the equa-tion is:
Transmissibility (%) =1
( d )2
- 1nIn practicality, transmissibility is not the term commonlyused. We use the term isolation efficiency. This is thetransmissibility subtracted from 100%. For example, ifwe have 20% transmissibility, we say we have 80%isolation efficiency.
Isolation efficiency (%) = 100% - Transmissibility (%)
Generally, in most non-critical applications a minimumisolation efficiency of 80% is acceptable. As the appli-cation gets more critical, a computer chip manufactur-
ing plant for example, isolation efficiencies in the high90% range may be required. As the required isolationefficiency increases, so does the cost and complexityof the isolation system.
FOR THE DESIGNERWe need to have the operating speed of the equip-ment when selecting vibration isolation materials and mounts. However, more information is required to make the proper isolator selection when leafingthrough this catalog. Additional information required includes:
Equipment weight
Motor horsepower
Number of isolation points and weight distributionat each point, if available
Installation location within the building
Is the equipment installed on grade or above, with-in the building?
Is the equipment suspended?
Is the equipment on the roof?
Generally, this is most of the information required. Forspecialty applications that fall outside the realm ofthese general categories, consult the VMC EngineeringDepartment for additional support.
Installations above grade within a structure must beanalyzed differently than those on a structural slab ongrade. It is generally assumed that a slab on grade isinfinitely rigid and cannot deflect. For the sake of vibra-tion isolation, this is true. For installations above grade, the stiffness of the structure may play a significant rolein selecting proper isolation. From the transmissibilityequation, it is seen that the ratio between the disturb-ing frequency and the natural frequency of the isolationsystem is the driving factor. At the center of a mid-floorslab, natural frequencies exist that are relatively closeto theoretical natural frequency for efficient isolation. The concerns with this is that by adding an isolationsystem on top of this slab at that frequency will createa two mass and spring system which may create reso-nance between the two systems.

TECHNOTES
As can be seen from the above sketch, the stiffness ofthe slab is a part of the total system. We can quantifyits stiffness for illustration. Per current design guide-lines, ASD & LRFD, a typical mid-point deflection in abeam is L/360, where L is the length of the beam. Fora 20 beam span, the allowable deflection is 0.67.This value falls within the range of required isolation forour equipment. Therefore, it is very likely that amplifica-tion will occur if this system applies its vibratory forceat the center of the span.
Solving this problem requires additional displacementin the selected isolation system. As we decrease thenatural frequency of the isolation system, we decouplethe natural frequency of the system from that of theslab. Typically, a good value for deflection of the isola-tion system is about five to six times that of the struc-ture, assuming we are still in the range of isolation effi-ciency. And by decreasing the natural frequency of theisolation system, we increase the ratio of d /n, whichwill create a more efficient system.
Now that the correct spring deflection and load capac-ity are selected, the applications engineer can now gothrough the various options in selecting the propervibration isolator. VMC offers a wide variety of choices
to aid the designer in this process. Typical choices areopen spring, captive mount, snubbed mount or seis-mic mount, for base mounted equipment. For sus-pended equipment, the choice for the designerincludes, boxed spring hangers that are offered with orwithout elastomeric elements. These are also availablewith a pre-positioning option, which limits the travel inthe system once it is filled.
FLOOR MOUNTED EQUIPMENTFor equipment installed on a structural slab, four different application options exist. In each case, other information is necessary to properly select theisolation system.
1. Open Springs Use of an open spring in mostapplications needs to be looked at cautiously dueto the lateral instability of the installation. If theequipment being isolated has lateral service loads, such as fan thrust, use of an open spring is notrecommended. Also, equipment with high startuptorque should not be isolated with open springs. When the equipment has other means of lateralsupport, say, a seismic snubber or two directionalhorizontal thrust restraints, an open spring will suf-fice. Though, use of an open spring in combinationwith an elastomeric break, will be the least intrusiveto the acoustical designer.
2. Captive and Housed Mounts Captive andhoused mounts are primarily open spring mountsthat are placed inside of a housing. The housing
TECHNOTES

offers lateral stability and provides a flat upper sur-face for the equipment to rest on. Most isolatorssold are of this variety. Captive mounts provide thesafety needed for most non-critical installations thatare subject to lateral operating loads and uplift. Inaddition, they are offered with base plates foranchoring to a structural slab.
3. Snubbed Mounts Mounts that have internalsnubbing that creates coloumb (or frictional) damp-ing are considering snubbing mounts. Snubbing isgenerally required for installations that have a highdegree of start-up torque and that frequently shutdown and restart. During the start-up of someequipment, the motor will pass through a resonantfrequency, and having a damping device will pre-vent amplification.
4. Seismic Mounts The last level of laterallyrestrained springs is seismic mounts. Thesemounts are so called since they are designed towithstand the applied lateral load from a seismicevent. These mounts are offered with provisions forpositively fastening to the equipment and to build-ing structure. Their internal components have been
designed and certified to carry prescribed seismicforces. When selecting a seismic mount for a par-ticular application, it is necessary to have a jobspecification or know exactly where the job installa-tion is located. VMCs engineering gladly offers allthe assistance necessary to properly design, selectand install seismic mounting systems. Thesemounts, along with the Captive and Snubbed, alsooffer the ability to use the mount to block theequipment at a prescribed height prior to filling the system.
It is important to note that seismic mounts are notintended to protect the equipment from a seismicevent. Their purpose is to ensure the equipmentstays positively attached to the building structure.
It should also be added that all seismic mounts arecaptive, but not all all captive mounts can be con-sidered seismic rated.

SPRING-FLEX MOUNTINGS
A Series Spring-Flex mountings are designed to isolatelow frequency vibrations in air handling units, fans, chillers, and other HVAC equipment. The A Series arerecommended for use directly under most HVACequipment and in conjunction with structural steelbases and concrete inertia blocks.
The A Series are freestanding spring mountings thatare laterally stable. The coils are designed with anexcellent ratio between the coil outer diameter and theoperating height ensuring lateral stability. In all the ASeries designs, this ratio is a minimum of 0.80 andmany have a 1:1 ratio. The coils are built to low oper-ating stresses providing long mounting life.
The A Series also feature weldless construction. Thespring coils are not welded to steel plates that couldintroduce excessive stress at the weld areas and result in the failure of the springs. Instead, the A Seriesare assembled to elastomeric cups or to steel platebases providing durability and flexibility. The seriesalso include a built-in leveling device for simplifiedinstallation. The products incorporate a color-codedsteel spring for ease of identification and inspection inthe field.

APPLICATIONS
Six housing sizes and several mounting options with or without bolts provide superior versatilityover a wide range of applications.
High carbon steel springs and bonded, syntheticrubber sound pads reduce vibration, shock andnoise transmission.
Durable, gray cast iron housings meet ASTM A48standards, while welded steel construction is usedin the larger sizes.
Accommodates wide range of loads.
Internal leveling adjustment permits installation any-where regardless of accessibility or the location ofbolts in the machine base or foundation.
Color-coded springs provide easy identification forinstallation and inspection.
A powder-coated finish on the springs and electroplated bolts and nuts offer improved corrosion resistance.
STEEL SPRING VIBRATION ISOLATORS
L Series steel spring isolators are extremely versatilevibration control mountings generally used for enginegensets and industrial machinery. The L Series isoffered in several standard versions that provide a widerange of installation options internal or external leveladjustments, fully adjustable snubbing, high carbonsteel springs for heavy loads or softer springs forlighter loads, and many mounting choices. Specialmodifications, such as extra long bolts or extra mount-ing holes, are available as options.
The LI and LO types offer internal adjustment that per-mits installation anywhere regardless of accessibility orthe location of bolt holes in the machine base or con-crete foundation. The standard adjustment bolt willpass through a 2-inch machine leg. Longer bolts forthicker legs are available. Fully adjustable snubbing isby means of end nuts. Oil-resistant rubber is standardfor all sizes and styles of snubber inserts. LN and LOtypes have non-adjustable inserts for alignment pur-poses, without any snubbing action, and can be con-verted for adjustability in the field.
The standard springs use oil-tempered high carbonsteel and softer springs are available for lighter loads. All springs are color-coded for easy identification andoffer a powder-coated finish for improved corrosionresistance. All housings are durable, gray cast iron perASTM A48 (except for H and J sizes). The H and Jhousings are of welded steel construction to accom-modate the heaviest load capacities in the L series.
L Series isolators are fastened to the floor by means ofa base plate with slotted bolt holes, bonded syntheticrubber sound pads, and isolation washers. For fasten-ing to a machine, a single bolt is standard on types LKand LN isolators. A waffle-embossed, elastomericsound pad cemented to the top plate provides maxi-mum sound damping and noise absorption on types LIand LO. This sound pad offers a non-skid surface thatnormally requires no bolting one tapped hole will befurnished upon request. VMC will also provide addi-tional tapped holes in the top plate as an option.Protective coatings using enamel and electroplatedbolts and nuts are also standard.

Load ranges from 100 to 22,900 lbs. provide flexi-bility over a wide range of heavy-duty applications.
Oil-tempered, high carbon steel springs and heavy-duty, all-welded steel housings ensure extremedurability and long life.
Internal or external leveling adjustment permitsinstallation anywhere regardless of accessibility orthe location of bolts.
Color-coded springs provide easy identification forinstallation and inspection.
A powder-coated finish on the springs and zinc-plated hardware offer superior corrosion resistance.
STEEL SPRING VIBRATION ISOLATORS
S Series steel spring isolators are exceptionally versa-tile vibration control mountings for use with marine andstationery diesel generators, large presses, hammers, shaker screens, and pulverizing equipment. The SSeries is offered in several standard versions that pro-vide a wide range of installation options including inter-nal or external level adjustments, fully adjustable snub-bing, and a variety of floor and equipment mountingchoices. Extra long bolts or extra mounting holes areavailable as options.
The SI type offers internal adjustment that permitsinstallation anywhere regardless of accessibility or thelocation of bolt holes in the machine base or founda-tion. The SK type offers external leveling via a singleadjusting bolt or in combination with two additionalconnecting bolts. The standard adjustment bolt willpass through a 2-inch machine leg. Longer bolts forthicker legs are available. The SO type is non-levelingfor applications where leveling is not a concern.
S Series isolators offer fully adjustable snubbing bymeans of the end nuts. Snubber inserts are made of
elastomer impregnated cotton duck for heavy dutyusage. The springs are oil-tempered, high carbonsteel. The housings are made of heavy duty, all-weldedsteel construction as standard. All springs are color-coded for easy identification and offer a powder-coat-ed finish and zinc-plated hardware for superior corro-sion resistance. Special steels or coating materials forharsh chemical atmospheres are also available as an option.
VMC S Series isolators are fastened to the floor bymeans of a base plate, elastomer sound pads and iso-lation washers. For fastening to a machine, a singlebolt is standard on SK type isolators. Clearance holesare standard for internal leveling on SI types. The cus-tomer may specify the number, size and location fortapped holes.
Supplemental limit stops are recommended for marine, mobile and other installations where overturning forcesmay be encountered. If preferred, refer to the VMCKMS Series isolator with integral, all-directional limitstops for use in these applications. See page 224.

APPLICATIONS
Load ranges up to 8000 lbs. provide flexibility overa range of marine and portable applications.
All-directional limit stops permit installation in appli-cations where significant movement in any directionis possible.
Oil-tempered, high carbon steel springs and heavyduty, all-welded steel housings ensure extremedurability and long life.
Color-coded springs provide easy identification forinstallation and inspection.
A powder-coated finish on the springs and zinc-plated hardware offer superior corrosion resistance.
STEEL SPRING VIBRATION ISOLATORS
KMS Series steel spring, vibration isolators are veryeffective mountings for use with marine, mobile andportable equipment. The KMS Series are ideal forreducing vibration, shock and structure-born noise in mobile applications that require limit stops in all directions.
The horizontal limit stops incorporate moldedpolyurethane while the vertical limit stops utilize elas-tomer impregnated cotton duck. This constructionsoftens the potential contact between metal-to-metal parts.
The housings are made of heavy duty, all-welded steelconstruction as standard. Zinc-plated hardware and
zinc chromate-primed housings and metal compo-nents further ensure protection against harsh condi-tions. The KMS Series require fastening to the supportstructure and to the equipment. Anchor bolt holes inthe base plate and tapped holes in the top plate are provided.
The oil-tempered, high carbon steel springs are pow-der-coated for superior corrosion resistance in harshenvironmental situations. All springs are color-codedfor easy identification and inspection in the field.

SHSERIES
APPLICATIONS
Loads from 21-5000 lbs. with static deflections up to 5 provide flexibility over a wide range of applications.
Pre-compressed and pre-positioning hangers offerquick and easy installation in even the most chal-lenging locations.
Lower hanger rod on some models enables a 30o
swing to compensate for rod misalignment andprevents short circuits to the hanger box.
Color-coded springs provide easy identification ofSpring-Flex hangers for installation and inspection.
SPRING-FLEX HANGERS
SH Series Spring-Flex hangers are designed to isolatelow frequency vibrations in suspended piping andequipment preventing transmission of vibration to thebuilding structure through the piping systems. Theproducts incorporate a color-coded steel spring forease of identification in the field. Load ranges from 21to 5000 lbs. and up to 5 of static deflection offer awide variety of choices to ensure proper support.
Spring-Flex hangers should be used for all suspendedpiping in equipment rooms, or 50 from vibratingequipment whichever is greater. To prevent loadtransfer to the equipment flanges when the piping sys-tem is filled, VMC offers pre-compressed and pre-posi-tioning hangers that should be installed at the first
three hanger locations adjacent to the equipment. These designs ensure that the weight of the piping iskept off isolated equipment, which will maintain align-ment, protect flexible connectors and keep equipmentisolators from becoming overloaded.
The SH-30A Series also offers the capability for thelower hanger rod to swing approximately 30o to com-pensate for rod misalignment ensuring that the roddoes not short circuit the hanger by coming in contactwith the hanger box. When isolating ductwork andsuspended ceilings, the SHSC Series can be utilized. These hangers incorporate eyebolt hardware toaccommodate duct strap connections.

APPLICATIONS
Loads from 60-5000 lbs. with static deflections up to 2 provide flexibility over a wide range of applications.
Pre-positioning hangers prevent load transfer to theequipment flanges when the piping system is filled.
Load bearing plate keeps suspended piping at afixed elevation during installation and start-up,regardless of load changes.
Adjustment nut permits load transfer from the plate to the spring after the equipment is installedand level.
Color-coded springs provide easy identification ofSpring-Flex hangers for installation and inspection.
SPRING-FLEX HANGERS
SHP Series Spring-Flex hangers are designed to iso-late low frequency vibrations in air handling units, fans, ductwork and other suspended equipment. The SHPSeries effectively prevents transmission of vibrationthrough the piping systems to the building structure.
The SHP Series features pre-positioning hangers thatprevent load transfer to the equipment flanges whenthe piping system is filled. The Series also adds a loadbearing plate within the hanger box that keeps sus-pended piping at a fixed elevation during installationand start-up. This plate is designed to maintain sus-pended equipment and piping at a fixed elevationregardless of load changes.
In piping applications, once the system is filled, theload is transferred from the plate to the spring, permit-ting only minimal movement in the piping. This design
ensures that the weight of the piping is kept off the iso-lated equipment maintaining alignment, protectingflexible connectors, and preventing isolators frombecoming overloaded. An adjustment nut is providedto transfer the load to the spring after the piping sys-tem has been filled with water, or the equipment isinstalled and level.
The SHP Series should be installed at the first threehanger locations adjacent to the equipment and maybe fastened directly to the building structure. It is rec-ommended that the hangers be positioned as close tothe ceiling as possible. The hangers are capable ofsupporting loads up to 5000 lbs. and offer up to 2 ofstatic deflection. These products incorporate a color-coded steel spring for ease of identification andinspection in the field.

APPLICATIONS
Elastomeric element offers isolation from noise aswell as vibration.
Loads from 20-5000 lbs and static deflections up to 5 provide flexibility over a wide range of applications.
Pre-compressed and pre-positioning hangers offerquick and easy installation in even the most chal-lenging locations.
Lower hanger rod on some models enables a 30o
swing to compensate for rod misalignment andprevents compromising the effectiveness of thehanger box.
Color-coded springs provide easy identification ofSpring-Flex hangers for installation and inspection.
SPRING-FLEX HANGERS
The VMC RSH Series Spring-Flex hangers offer anideal solution for vibration isolation of suspended pip-ing and equipment. The RSH Series features a steelspring in combination with an elastomer element foruse in locations where it is critical to isolate both vibra-tion and structure-born noise.
The RSH Series is capable of load ranges from 20 to5000 lbs and up to 5 of static deflection. This pro-vides a wide range of hanger choices for even themost demanding applications. Like most VMC prod-ucts, the RSH Series uses a color-coded steel springfor ease of identification in the field.
The RSH 30A Series offers all of the above featuresplus the capability for the lower hanger rod to swingapproximately 30o to compensate for rod misalign-
ment. This feature ensures that the rod does not shortcircuit or compromise the hanger by coming in con-tact with the hanger box.
When used for all suspended piping in equipmentrooms, Spring-Flex hangers should be placed withinthe first 50 of the equipment. To prevent load transferto the equipment flanges when the piping system isfilled, VMC offers pre-compressed and pre-positioninghangers that should be installed at the first three hang-er locations adjacent to the equipment. These designsensure that the weight of the piping is kept off isolatedequipment, which will maintain alignment, protect flexi-ble connectors, and keep equipment isolators frombecoming overloaded.

APPLICATIONS
Loads from 60-5000 lbs. with static deflections up to 2 provide flexibility over a wide range of applications.
Pre-positioning and pre-compressed hangers pre-vent load transfer to the equipment flanges andsimplify installation.
Load bearing plate keeps suspended piping at afixed elevation during installation and start-up,regardless of load changes.
Adjustment nut permits load transfer from the plateto the spring after the piping is installed and level.
Color-coded springs provide easy identification ofSpring-Flex hangers for installation and inspection.
SPRING-FLEX HANGERS
RSHP Series Spring-Flex hangers are designed toeffectively prevent the transmission of vibration throughthe piping systems to the building structure. The RSHPSeries is also ideal for use in air handling units, duct-work and other suspended equipment.
The RSHP Series features pre-positioning hangers thatprevent load transfer to the equipment flanges whenthe piping system is filled. The Series also adds a loadbearing plate within the hanger box that keeps sus-pended piping at a fixed elevation during installationand start-up. This plate is designed to maintain sus-pended equipment and piping at this fixed elevationregardless of load changes.
Once the system is filled, the load is transferred fromthe plate to the spring permitting only minimal move-ment in the piping. This design ensures that the weight
of the piping is kept off the isolated equipment main-taining alignment, protecting flexible connectors, andpreventing isolators from becoming overloaded. Anadjustment nut is provided to transfer the load to thespring after the piping system has been filled withwater, or the equipment is installed and level.
The RSHP Series should be installed at the first threehanger locations adjacent to the equipment and maybe fastened directly to the building structure. It is rec-ommended that the hangers be positioned as close tothe ceiling as possible. The hangers are capable ofsupporting loads up to 5000 lbs. and offer up to 2 ofstatic deflection. The products incorporate a color-coded steel spring for ease of identification andinspection in the field.

APPLICATIONS
Color-coded springs provide easy identification of Spring-Flex mountings for installation andinspection.
Freestanding spring mountings offer installation inminimal space.
SPRING-FLEX HANGERS
KDX Series Spring-Flex mountings are designed to iso-late low frequency vibrations in locations where there isminimal space available such as in suspendedmechanical equipment room applications.
The KDX Series are unhoused spring mountings thatare laterally stable. The series incorporates a color-
coded steel spring along with spring cups and elas-tomeric washers. The KDX Series are installed directlybelow suspended mechanical equipment, clevis or tra-peze hangers, or directly above a steel support beam. The hangers are capable of supporting loads up to2500 lbs. and provide up to 1.5 of static deflection.
