    Introduction

    The D16 is a 16 track digital multi-track recorder(MTR) with full-digital p rocessing (

    24 bit

    internalprocessing,

    16/24 bit

    uncompressed

    recording andplayback,

    44.1 kHz

    sampling frequency).

    It contains a

    16 track

    recorder, a

    24-channel 8-bus

    mixer, and effects.

    When using

    16 bit

    recording/ playback:

    8

    tracks can

    be recorded simultaneously, and

    16

    tracks can beplayed back simultaneously.

    When using

    24 bit

    recording/ playback:

    4

    tracks canbe recorded simultaneously, and

    8

    tracks can beplayed back simultaneously.

From recording to effect processing to mixing d ownto CD-R/ RW (a CD-R/ RW drive is req uired ), DATrecorder or MIXDOWN ,

all processing is pe r-formed completely in the digital domain

    .

    A

    2.1 GB

hard disk is built-in, allowing a total of upto

    6.5 hours

of recording (when recording one track

    at 16 bits). A maximu m of

    100

    songs

    16

tracks 8 virtua l tracks can be recorded , for a total maximu mof 12,800 tra cks of da ta.

All analog inpu ts in the mixer section use high-per-formance balanced p reamps to take full advantageof the aud io quality of full-digital processing.

Dedicated XLR inp ut an d guitar input jacks are p ro-vided, and supp ort a range from m ic level to +16dBu (beyond p ro aud io level) so that virtually anyaud io source can be connected.

All phone jack inpu ts use TRS balanced jacks tosupport balanced input. Of course, unbalanced input is also supp orted.

The D16 has a built-in mic that lets you imm edi-

ately record phrases that come to m ind.The S/P DIF digital input provides a sampling rateconverter tha t autom atically converts 48 kHz o r 32kHz sources to 44.1 kHz .

Each analog input/ mixer channel provides highEQ , mid EQ , and low EQ . The mid EQ has anadjustable cutoff frequency .

Since separate EQ is provided for the inpu ts and themixer, you w ill never have the p roblem of u ninten-tional dou ble EQ tha t can occur on MTR systemswith an analog mixer, when the EQ settings u seddu ring recording are re-applied d uring p layback.

A maximum of eight insert effects can be used on theanalog inputs/ m ixer channels. Two master effects accept sends from each channel. And lastly, a ded icatednal effect can be app lied to the master outpu ts. Inserteffects and master effects can be selected from 128/32/32

(total of 192 ) different preset programs, each of whichcombine up to v e of 98 varieties of h igh-quality effectwith settings created by professional musicians and stu-dio eng ineers. You can freely edit the p reset program s

and store them in one of 192 user areas. An exp ressionpedal (separately sold option) can be connected to con-trol an insert effect in realtime.

The effects built into the D16 mak e it easy for you touse detailed and pow erful modeling sounds pro-duced by Korgs modeling technology.

A tuner is built in, so that you can tu ne an instru-ment etc. whose sound is picked up by the internalmic, or check the tu ning of a playback track.

Fader, EQ, pan , and effect settings etc. of the mixersection can be stored as scenes , and up to 100 scenescan be recorded in each song. Scenes can beswitched as time elapses du ring playback, or youcan recall them wh en d esired as general-purposesettings.

Operations such as record, copy, and delete are per-formed using non-destructive editing . You can u seth e Undo function to retur n to the state beforerecording or editing, and then use the Redo functionto cancel the Und o operation. Undo allows you toreturn through the previous 99 recording or editingoperations.

Th e Auto Save function ensures that songs orphrases that you created by recording or ed iting areautomatically saved to d isk when you switch songsor tur n off the p ower, freeing you from h aving tomanu ally save your data.

Each track provides eight virtual tracks .

When record ing solo parts etc., you can sw itchbetween virtual tracks to record multiple takes, andselect the best one later. Or w hen bo un cing (ping-pong recording), you can specify an unselected vir-tua l track as the recording destination , so that six-teen tracks of recorded data can be m ixed d own totwo tra cks withou t erasing any of the sixteen tracks.By repeated ly bouncing sixteen tracks to two tracks, you can th eoretically create a song w ith 16 8 = 128tracks without erasing any of the original track data.

In addition to the metronome sound, the D16 pro-vides 215 different rhythm patterns in a wide rangeof musical styles, which can prov ide a recordingguid e with a m ore realistic sense of tempo. Evenwith out conn ecting a rhythm m achine, its easy tobegin recording along w ith a favorite rhyth m. Theserhythm patterns can also be recorded on a track.

Auto an d manual punch-in /out recording functionsma ke it easy for you to re-record a sp ecic portion of your p erformance that you w ould like to redo.

Th e Trigger Record function can automatically ini-tiate recording when audio input occurs, so that itseasy to begin recording ev en if both han ds are occu-

pied w ith playing a gu itar or keyboard. A footswitch can also be used to start/ stop recording.

Thank you for purchasing the Korg D16 DigitalRecord ing Stud io. To ensu re trou ble-free enjoy-ment, please read this manu al carefully and use

Th e Scrub function lets you audition the recordedstate of each track just as if you w ere using an op en-reel tape recorder, mak ing it easy to nd th e precisebeginning of a desired phrase, etc.

Th e Locate Point ( four locations per song) and Mark Point ( 100 locations per song) memory functionsallow you to mem orize points for instant recall, suchas divisions in the son g structu re. You can a ssign aname to each mark.

The D16 provides a Program Playback function sim-ilar to that found on a CD or MD, so that you canplayba ck multiple songs in a specied ord er. Thisfunction can also be used to produ ce your ownalbum that can be recorded directly to MD or DATetc.

You can connect a CD-R/ RW drive and prod uceyour ow n original album s (a CD-R/ RW drive isrequired).

Be aware that some aud io CD players are unable to

play back CD-R/ RW discs. When recording and editing songs or phrases from a

record or CD, you can tap along to the tempo tomatch the tempo . You can a lso create a tempo map ,or record MIDI Clock data from an external device.

The D16 can be synchronized to a sequencer orrhyth m m achine etc. that su pp orts MIDI Clock,MTC, or MMC.

Major types of connectors such as SCSI and S/ P DIFdigital interface etc. are standard, allowing immedi-ate connection to external d evices.

The SCSI connector allows recording/ playback ordata backup on an external hard disk or removabledisk etc.

The S/P DIF connectors allow au dio d ata to be d igi-tally recorded from an external d igital dev ice suchas a CD or MD, or a song you create to be mixeddow n to DAT or MD via direct digital output.

The AUX OUT jack allows an external effect to beconnected.

The D16 features the TouchView system that allowsyou p erform operations by directly touching theLCD screen, makin g cursor m ovem ents easy. A four-directional cursor key is also provid ed to allow tra -ditional operation.

The D16 is compact and lightweight, and can be eas-ily carried into the studio or anywhere else.
