It takes a new approach to meet the pharmaceu-
tical industry’s high standards in terms of GMP
requirements and productivity. With its completely
new design, the KORSCH XL 400 rotary press will
redefine the state-of-the-art in press technology
to achieve a new dimension in productivity.
The breakthrough in press design.
The advantage of innovative design:
is the central assembly of the KORSCH XL 400
and consists of a welded-steel construction
enclosed by stainless-steel panels.
This column connects the machine base and
the head piece. The doors on the back open
to permit access to the inside of the column.
The following are housed inside the column:
● All intake and exhaust air lines
● All electrical connections
● Central lubrication unit
● Servomotor for the turret drive
● Power supply and utilities for head piece
● Hydraulic unit for adjustment of com-
pression-roller columns and lifting unit
for turret removal
Above. The rear of the machine consists of the multi-function column.Left. A double door permits optimal access to the multi-functioncolumn from the rear.
The multi-function columninnovative
is an innovative unit that saves time to increase
productivity. The new turret design permits easy,
convenient removal of the entire turret as well as
dies, upper punches and upper cam track. The
entire operation takes only 8 minutes!
The turret is available for EURO, IPT B and D tools.
Each turret comes with the upper cam-track hold-
er and cam tracks as well as a torque support and
a tie-rod with a clamping means for positive
connection with the drive shaft.
A hydraulic lifting unit is used to remove the tur-
ret. The turret can be transported to the technical
area to be cleaned or to change tools with a
special cart.

feature completely a new design. They consist of
two completely enclosed compression-roller
columns for pre- and main compression. Each sta-
tion can produce up to 100 kN. The surfaces of the
heavy-duty outer steel guide columns are polished
and nickel-plated. The compression-roller columns
can be retracted and rotated hydraulically.
The following are housed inside the columns:
● Support assembly for the upper and lower
compression rollers
● Servomotors for adjusting the compression
rollers
● Roller-position monitoring system

The compression-roller stations
is mounted on top of the multi-function column.
The head piece is a welded-steel construction
covered with stainless-steel panels both inside
and out. The suspended construction makes it
possible to eliminate columns to permit optimal
access.
The head piece contains the following:
● New window interlocks for the three generously
dimensioned safety windows that enclose the
compression zone
● Two lamps that illuminate the compression
zone
● Access openings for material feed and air intake
● Electric cables and oil lines to the turret
● Attachment means for overhead feed system

lets the operator control all functions and can be
installed in the immediate vicinity of the press.
All functions, including machine alarms, are dis-
played on the screen. The screen can be installed
in the door of the control cabinet, mounted on
the wall of the production room or mounted on
a stainless-steel swing arm installed on the left-
hand side of the press.
user-friendly
The MMI color touch-screen operater interface
contains all controls and instrumentation. The
cabinet is of stainless-steel and can be set up
separately from the machine itself. In this case,
the machine can be operated by means of a
color touch-screen operater interface installed
on a swing arm on the machine.
is a welded-steel construction that is completely
enclosed in stainless-steel panels. Large access
openings with hinged doors are provided to the
left and right, and a central panel permits connec-
tion of all peripheral equipment.
The essential function of the base is to support the
carrier plate. It is separated from the machine hous-
ing by vibration-absorbing elements that ensure
vibration-free operation.

Advantages
Yesterday’sproblems
1 Rotary presses operate in ”white zones”
under clinical conditions and cannot be
maintained or repaired during operation. It is
necessary to interrupt operation and transport
the machine to the ”gray zone” to carry out
such work.
2 Installation of cables and wiring required for
operation and control of tablet presses:
Since presses must be accessible from all sides,
they must be installed in the middle of the
room.
3 Installation of air intake and exhaust lines:
The intake air required for extraction of dust
from the compression chamber is normally taken
in from the production room through the head
piece. In the event conditioned air is required, a
separate air intake is necessary. Exhaust air is
generally conveyed through the compression
room from the base of the machine to a vacuum
cleaner or a dust-evacuation system.
The newGMP-concept.TTW (through the wall) -technologyThe multi-function column is a cabinet-like ele-
ment mounted on the base of the machine that
supports the head piece. This column houses
all major components and utility lines, including
electrical connections air intake and exhaust lines.
As a result, future-oriented TTW-technology is now
for the first time available for tablet presses.
TTW-technology makes it possible to install the
KORSCH XL 400 next to a wall of the production
room (”white zone”) so that the multi-function
column can be accessed from the adjoining tech-
nical room (”gray zone”) through an opening in
the wall. This configuration makes it possible to
continue tablet production in the white zone
while maintenance or other work is carried out
from the gray zone at the same time.
In addition to all electrical and utility lines,
the control cabinet can also be installed in the
technical room.
Uncompromising efficiency.
There are many significant advantages to the
KORSCH XL 400. The most important of which is
of course the exceptionally high potential for
increasing productivity that results from the com-
bined effect of many innovative features.
Most importantly, logical separation of machine
elements to permit maintenance from the gray
zone during operation and the exchangeable tur-
ret combine to drastically reduce maintenance
and retooling time.
Productivity increases substantially when two tur-
rets are used to operate a single press. While one
is being cleaned or retooled, the other can be
used to continue production.
The design of the KORSCH XL 400 is another
factor that helps increase productivity and is
more than merely an esthetic feature. As a
result of the reduced space inside the machine,
the most important benefit of the machine’s
compact design is ergonomic efficiency. Short
distances reduce the effort required on the part
of personnel, which increases productivity becau-
se cleaning and retooling work is considerably
easier. Smooth surfaces and convenient access
to all machine elements also plays an important
role here.
Efficient.Produkt documentationFor KORSCH, documentation of the performance,
characteristics and special features of the press and
validation of this information with the customer are
indispensable services for a manufacturer.
In addition, extensive in-depth qualification proto-
cols have been developed in cooperation with the
pharmaceutical industry.
As a result, we are in a position to validate the
press as well as all controls and instrumentation
and the corresponding hard- and software.
Process documentationThe KORSCH XL 400 is delivered with complete
documentation for monitoring the quality of the
production process. All production data, machine
settings, control parameters, malfunction messages
and changes are recorded, statistically evaluated
and entered into a protocol.
