It was also my pleasure to present Sophia (Y6) with a Gold Award. A wonderful achievement! As the number of Silver Award recipients continues to outstrip Bronze this year, I assume there are many stu- dents who are close to achieving Bronze (for 5 Assembly Awards). Silver Awards are presented to students who have received a Bronze Principal’s Award and a further 10 Assembly Awards; and students are eligible for a Gold Principal’s Award when they have achieved a Silver Prin- cipal’s Award and a further 15 Assembly Awards. Quite a feat! Assembly Awards can be brought to me directly or through the office. Community Participation to The Fore Sincere thanks to Matt Playdon for organising Sunday’s working bee and to all who volunteered their time. The P&C Gardens and Grounds Team is making a fantastic difference to the school environs. Further details are be- low in this newsletter. While on P&C matters, please note that the P&C May Meeting has been postponed until Wednesday 17 th June as a school disco and literacy sessions will be held on Wed. 10 th June. Also if any families are leaving in 2016 could you please let the school know. Medical Information Update Thank you to those parents who have returned medi- cal forms sent out last term. Many families received a letter asking for anaphylaxis, allergy, asthma or medi- cal needs to be updated by your child’s treating doc- tor. We need medical information updated annually to be able to best care for your children. We also need parents to check medication supplied to the school for expiry dates as many ventolins and even some epipens are out of date. Please complete these forms as soon as possible and return them to the school office. If you received a letter and your child no longer has a medical need, could you also please in- form the office. Walk Safely to School Day

Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an annual, na-tional event encouraging all Primary School children to walk and commute safely to school. It is a Community Event seeking to promote Road Safety, Health, Public Transport and the Environment. WSTSD is an opportunity for parents and carers of Pri-mary School aged children to promote safe pedestrian behaviour and healthy habits. Regular walking has sig-nificant physical, mental and social health benefits. It is recommended that parents and carers closely supervise their young children, especially those under 10 years of age, in all road environments. In particular please re-member to hold hands when near or crossing the road. For more information you can look at the WSTSD web page, www.walk.com.au. The event is supported by the Australian Government and all State, Territory and Local Governments. KSPS will participate in the Walk Safely to School Day on this Friday the 29th of May by encouraging students to walk to school with their parents using safe behaviours such as holding an adult’s hand and to look, listen and think about traffic as they cross the roads in our local area. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in classroom activities to promote safe pedes-trian behaviours.

Wrapper Free Day - June 2

As part of our school’s environment program we are holding a wrapper free day on Tuesday, June 2. All stu-dents are encouraged to bring their lunch to school in containers that can be re-used rather than being wrapped in paper, foil etc. The canteen will operate as normal. We thank you for your support and look forward to see-ing less rubbish around the school.

Lunch Wallets to order

In addition to the wrapper free day we have also organ-ised an opportunity for students to purchase Lunch Wal-lets that can be used to order lunch at the canteen. These wallets can be used over and over again - cutting down on paper bags and wastage. Please see the order form attached to this newslet-ter. The cost of the bags is $7 each and orders need to be in by Friday, 5 June. They will be distributed to stu-

as soon as they arrive back at school. At this stage there will not be additional bags for sale - they will ONLY be available through the attached order form.

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS)

This Wednesday, at 11am, the Australian Library and Information Services (ALIA) is celebrating National Sim-ultaneous Storytime (NSS). National Simultaneous Sto-rytime is an annual campaign that aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books. Now in its 15th successful year it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and lit-eracy using an Australian children's book. This years book is 'The Brothers Quibble', written by Aaron Blabey. Aaron has visited our school and signed several of his books. The books are on display in the library, feel free to pop on in and have a look. They are very funny! I recently sent Aaron an email, about our school par-ticipating on Wednesday in NSS and I explained how the students were looking forward to listening to his sto-ry, especially as they have such fond memories of his school visit.

Here is his reply:

Hi Ms Nesbitt, Thanks for writing. Please pass on to the kids that I have nine new books coming out before the end of next year (including two more about pig the pug) and that I hope they enjoy them. Because of the crazy number of new books, I'm visiting less schools these days but I'm glad your kids enjoyed my last visit. It's always lovely. And thanks for joining in on Wednesday. All the best Aaron If you are free at 11am on Wednesday go to https://www.alia.org.au/nss to see the story read by Aaron.

Myself and the classes joining me can't wait!

KSPS Gardens and Grounds Last Sunday the school community got together once again for a bit of fun, getting our hands dirty for the benefit of the school grounds. This time around we had a bit of a focus on the natu-ral areas of the school with some bush regeneration activities. We had twelve families come along to undertake some much needed natural area restoration. One group tackled the weed commonly known as Aspara-gus Fern (Asparagus aetheopicus) along the Rod-way Parade boundary. A great group of parents and children helped to remove a massive pile of this very invasive and prolific weed so that the native plants can now begin to take more of a foothold in this ar-ea. Another group led by Mrs Gibson rediscovered the Wollemi Pine (Wollemia nobilis) in the area on the corner of Rodway and Rae Crescent. The Wollemi Pine had been donated to the school and much to everyone’s surprise has really thrived to become a healthy tree standing at about three metres. This group cleared up some vine choking some of the previously planted natives to allow the trees and shrubs a chance to keep on growing. Some of the students assisted in sowing some seeds of rocket, dill, radish, lettuce and basil with some Everlasting Daisy also thrown into the mix for the vegetable gardens in the Primary and Infants ar-eas. This was a great activity for the children whilst the parents were in the bush areas tackling some of the bigger tasks. Well done kids. The next volunteer day will be on the 16th of Au-gust.
