WOW, for a short week we are super busy. This morning I could not have been prouder of our children as they displayed their resilience and persistence in running the fun run (1 lap) for Kinders, year 1 and some year 2’s, the 2km (4 laps for 8,9,10) and then the 3km (6 laps for 11,12,13 years). A big thank you to our P & C who supported the carnival with drinks and snacks, to Mrs Ward, Mr Warren and Mr John for their organisation and especially to all our parents and community who cheers all our runners on. Together we all make #KSPSagreatplacetobe A very big thank you to Harry and Wes’s nan Mrs Daly for her contribution of KSPS aprons to our canteen. Mrs Best was very surprised to receive such a lovely gift. So handy for all our upcoming events. Thanks Mrs Daly for contributing to our school in such a practical way. Our Disco will be run tomorrow night as it was postponed from last week due to the rain. The times remain the same: Juniors 5-6pm and Seniors 6-7:30pm. Our P & C are supporting the discos with a sausage sizzle. The cost is $5 entry and our Student Ministers lead this event. P & C will also be wrapping for the Easter Mega Raffle on the Thursday. Thanks to all the parents for their contributions of yummy Easter eggs and goodies. In the next six to eight weeks our school will be undergoing some major works with painting to the exterior of senior toilets and canteen, re-concreting of the internal canteen floor space, painting the western face on A block, refurbishing the interior of the junior toilets and the asphalt outside the Kinder rooms being repaired and replaced in particular areas. Along with the bannisters and railings on stairways at OOSH, external gates on Rae Cres and Bender parade. This extensive amount of work will take some careful planning and flexibility on behalf of the school. In saying this, unfortunately I have requested from the P & C that we close the canteen for the last two days of term Thursday 12 and Friday 13 April to allow for concrete to be cleared form the canteen. This is a loud and dusty job This will mean that Mrs Best will bring forward her end of term supa surprise to the Wednesday. More information on that later in the newsletter. Our Star Struck dancers and Choir members are busily rehearsing and are looking forward to their collective rehearsal days next term. Thank you to all the parents for their commitment with the transport and cost of Star Struck. Without the parent support, this event could not go ahead. Miss Martin leads our choir group and Ms Gibson leads our dance group. To all our school community, thank you for your commitment to our school, together we are making #KSPSagreatplacetobe Susan Maxworthy PRINCIPAL

School News EASTER FUN DAY 2018 Our Easter celebrations will be held this Thursday March 29 commencing with the Easter Hat Parade at 10.15am for students in K–2 and HSUB. If students and parents are still finalising those extra special Easter hats, these should be brought in to classrooms prior to Thursday. Hot-cross buns, tea and coffee will be available for purchase at the school canteen after the parade. All students will participate in the tradition of egg rolling and children are asked to bring a very hard boiled, brightly coloured egg for the occasion. This activity is for students only and will take place at some stage during the day. There will also be an optional Easter Egg Decorating competition where students are invited to decorate an egg in a creative way. Egg decorating categories are best character, funniest egg, best animal and best artistic design. Entries and entry forms should be taken to the Library on Thursday morning before 9am. Easter Hat Parade day will be out of uniform day for all students. Please ensure your child is wearing suitable clothing (sun safe) and enclosed shoes for the day (no thongs). Looking forward to seeing you at this exciting event!

THE IPLAY PROGRAM I Our school has signed up to be involved in The iPLAY Program. Over the coming months, you can expect to hear more about this is exciting program.

What is iPLAY?

iPLAY is a teacher professional development program, designed to provide primary school teachers with the skills and strategies to improve sport and PE lessons. Some of our teachers have signed up to be iPLAY Leaders. The iPLAY leaders will oversee small changes in the school to ensure children have plenty of opportunities to be physically active. Research has shown that children who are more physically active perform better at school. The iPLAY Program is here to help us increase student physical activity, improve learning, and improve overall student health.

iPLAY is a school-based program conducted by Australian Catholic University and the University of Newcastle, and is funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council and NSW Department of Education. iPLAY aims to promote children’s physical activity through implementing a whole-of-school approach. iPLAY involves 6 key components: 1) quality physical education and school sport, 2) classroom movement breaks, 3) physically active homework, 4) active playgrounds, 5) community physical activity links and 6) parent/caregiver engagement.

Over the next 4 school terms a section will be dedicated to iPLAY in your school newsletter. This section will have information and ideas for promoting physical activity and fundamental movement skill development in children.

SUNSCREEN SAFETY While summer is the highest risk time, skin damage from the sun can happen throughout the year. Outdoor sport and recreation activities usually happen during the high UV radiation risk period of the day (10am-2pm and 11am-3pm daylight saving time). Many activities take place in environments in which there is little or no shade and high levels of UV radiation are reflected from surfaces such as cement, sand or water. Here at Kotara South Public school we have reconised this and with support from Port of Newcastle and the Cancer Council we have sunscreen available around the school grounds to apply when needed. These sunscreen stations are portable therefore can be taken to school sporting events or moved to different location around the school.

Protect yourself in 5 ways:

• Slip on clothing that covers your shoulders, arms and legs. Choose shirts with collars, high necks and sleeves and trousers or longer shorts and skirts that come below the knees.

• Slop on SPF30+ or higher broad-spectrum water-resistant sunscreen. Apply generously 20 minutes before going outside and re-apply every 2 hours. Never rely on sunscreen alone.

• Slap on a broad-brimmed hat that protects your face, ears and neck. Broad-brimmed, bucket and legionnaire style hats provide good protection. Baseball caps are not recommended, as they do not protect the ears, cheeks or neck.

• Seek shade whenever you can especially when UV levels are highest between10am and 2pm (11am and 3pm during daylight saving).

• Slide on sunglasses that meet Australian Standard AS1067 and that fit your face well.
