WORKING early hours. Lifting heavy, smellybins. Dealing with customer complaints.Operating difficult equipment.

These tasks andmore are what garbage col-lectors are faced with on a day-to-day basis -nomatter the weather conditions. Despite be-ing deemed by many as a ‘smelly job’, therefuse collection team of Kouga has provenover-and-over that with them there is nomucking about with waste collection. These dedicated and hard-workingmen and

women, who often go beyond their duties todemonstratework that is awe-inspiring - cameout tops in the recent Citizen Satisfaction Sur-vey that is conducted by theKougaMunicipal-ity on a yearly basis -making a lasting impres-sion on the communities they serve.According to municipal spokesperson,

Mfundo Sobele, there are approximately 168members in the refuse collection sub-sectionacross Kouga. This includes litter pickers andstreet sweepers. These men and women, whooften donot get the necessary recognition - areled by eight foremen and four truck drivers.Contributing to their success are monthly

meetings with workers to discuss the differ-entwork schedules, listening to problems and

to source buy-in from employees as agents ofchange.“This is how we keep our wagon moving,”

says Sobele.“The different teams cover about 20 266 for-

mal households, some 5 600 informal dwel-

lings and close to 600 businesses across Kou-ga.”But it is not always an easy task.“One of the challenges they face is break-

downs of vehicles when demand levels rise, particularly during the festive period,” says

Sobele. “To compensate for this, the munici-pality hires additional vehicles when needed.”Other challenges include residents taking

out their domestic waste before or after thescheduled days for their area, as well as ille-gal dumping.

DESPITE somemillions that will be spentto upgrade various landfill sites and esta-blish transfer stations in Kouga, the high-ly populated Jeffreys Bay does not featurehigh on the list of these plans.

The Kouga Waste Management and Re-cycling Project, which is implemented inpartnership with the Department of Envi-ronmental Affairs, will see the upgradingof existing landfill sites in accordancewith legislation at awhoppingR25millionby October this year.In addition, theKougaMunicipality has

put just more than R3 million of its ownfunding aside for the establishment oftransfer stations atOysterBay,Thornhill,Weston and Patensie.Upgrades already completed include se-

curity fencing andguardhouses at theHu-

mansdorp and Hankey waste sites, the in-stallation of a weigh bridge and electronicwaste recording system at Humansdorpand a transfer station at St Francis Bay.According to municipal spokesperson,

Mfundo Sobele, the plan for Jeffreys Bayis to have a drop-off zone or a temporarystoragewhere residentswould go for theirwaste disposal. “The municipality willthen transport this waste to the landfillsite, either on the same day or the follow-ing day,” says Sobele. “The site is to haveskip bins for this purpose.”According to Sobele, the project will form

part of the R25 million that is funded by theDepartment of Environmental Affairs.“Land for the drop-off zonehas been iden-

tified, but public participation processesstill need to be followed. Residents will begiven notice in due course,” says Sobele. It is hoped that the drop-off zone will be

in operation by the end ofOctober this year.

Still no landfill site for Jeffreys Bay

With a snip snip here . . . a dash of colour there and everywhere . . . and a whole lot of fun the Kouga Express team,in conjunction with Cansa Jeffreys Bay, Fountains Mall and Beautique Saolon, raised muchneeded funds for the localCansa branch. Thanks to the wonderful support of Kouga residents, the third annual Kouga Express Cansa Shavathon

held at Fountains Mall in Jeffreys Bay on March 5 was a huge success. Some R5 245.35 was raised. Apart fromspraying residents’ hair a multitude of colours and leaving some people bald, five pony tails were donated which will
