THE Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm donatedR254 300, including a car, to the On EaglesWings Multi-Purpose Centre in Pellsrus, Jef-freys Bay.

Founded by pastor Mercy Cwayi in 2005who experienced a traumatic childhood, andsupported by the Department of Social Devel-opment, the centre offers counselling, educa-tion and life skills to women and children ex-periencing domestic violence and rape. Thisis by no means a simple undertaking consid-ering that the community lacks sufficientsupport structures and is plaguedbydrug andalcohol abuse.“We are grateful to women like Cwayi who

take care of the many vulnerable women and

children in our communities. Their compas-sion and strength help lift up those who arein need of care,” says Marion Green-Thomp-son, Economic DevelopmentManager for Jef-freys Bay Wind Farm.“Ourdevelopmentprogrammeaims toposi-

tively impact the communities in JeffreysBay, Humansdorp, Hankey and Patensie are-as, with a particular focus on education andhealth.”Cwayi says: “We now have extra “legs” to

reach communitymembers and offer supportto domestic violence victims.”According to her there are exciting plans

in the pipeline for the centre. “We hope to es-tablish satellite branches in Patensie, Thorn-hill and Blomplaas, as well as to enable oursocial worker and trauma counsellor to visitcommunity members in those areas.

“We further dream of opening a house foryoung unwed pregnant mothers who havebeen cast off by their families - offering a safeplace and caring environment, while teach-ing them valuable skills to become independ-ent.”According to Social Development District

Manager Zandisile Tafeni, Government can-not deal with social ills on its own. “We havelimited resources, and are therefore gratefulto see companies like the Jeffreys Bay WindFarm giving back to the community.”

Herselman is sedert begin vanjaar by dieDBV in Humansdorp werksaam en woon opdie vereniging se perseel.

HELP MANAGETHE LOAD!

Geyser Management Project in Kouga Local MunicipalityFacts and Fiction

Why does Kouga Local Municipality support this project? The municipality must comply with national regulations that were implemented in 2012, which require municipalities to implement remote controltechnology controlling electrical loads, such as geysers. By means of this project, the Kouga Local Municipality will comply with the regulations. If peak demand can be reduced, the existing capacity of the electricity supply network will be used more efficiently - simply because consumerswould be using what is already available, without the need for additional power to be generated. This would make load shedding less likely - andif the load needs to be reduced (due to overloading on the national grid), it may be possible to avoid blackouts by only switching off the geysers.

How does this project work?

This is a load shift project, meaning that the load that would have been used at a certain time (in this case between 18:00 and 20:00 on weekdays)will be shifted to a different time (after 20:00) when there is less strain on the Eskom national grid. The project is based on a megawatt value thatwill be moved by switching off 6 200 geysers in the Kouga area.

Where will the geyser units be installed?Qualified technicians, with Kouga Local Municipality, Eskom and Escotek Enterprises identification cards will visit homes in Humansdorp,Jeffreys Bay, St Francis Bay and Cape St Francis to install the units. The following areas will be visited:

• Jeffreys Bay • Paradise Beach • Aston Bay • Kruisfontein • Humansdorp• St Francis Bay • Cape St Francis • Pellsrus • Ocean View

Should I switch off my geyser manually?

A request to the public to help make this project a success: if you do switch off your geyser manually in the morning and back on after returningfrom work in the afternoon, switch it on as soon as possible after arriving home to allow the geyser to heat the water for use between 18:00 and20:00. If you do switch it off again in the evening, allow some time after 20:00 to heat the replacement hot water.

What happens if Iam not at home during the day?

The technician will leave a not-at-home card with a Call Centre number so that you can phone us to install at a time when it is convenient to you.We usually do not install at night due to security reasons.

Who funds the project?

The project is funded by the National Electricity Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) through Eskom. The relays are paid for by NERSA throughEskom and are installed free of charge.

How long does installation take?

A typical installation takes 20-30 minutes.

Why is this project necessary?
