A Call for Teachers

[ Availing WDT as an Opportunity for bringing Paradigm Shift towards status of Teachers in Our Society]

Teaches’ importance

Education is one of the most important elements of human development. The development of a society and a nation is primarily dependent on the availability of opportunities for all in a country. Education is considered to be the most rewarding investment of public funds in developing countries. Education is not merely building more schools and enrolling children, though these are essential, its prime focus is to ensure that all children access education and each child holistically develop to her/his maximum potential. All education related activities revolve around teachers. They are the role models for the children of the nation - leading a process of opening eyes to the universe and transforming youth into responsible citizens. Islam has paid considerable attention to teachers for their being the first brick in the structure of social development and perfection and the cause of guiding and developing behaviors and mentalities of individuals and communities. The Prophet cared for teachers and showed their elevated standings. An educationist states, “Teachers are the good exemplars to whom the pupils refer inadvertently.” On the 5th of October, 1966, the world's teachers made a giant step forward. A Special Intergovernmental Conference adopted the UNESCO/ILO Recommendations concerning the Status of Teachers. UNESCO inaugurated the 5th of October as World Teachers’ Day in 1994 to commemorate the signing of the UNESCO/ILO. Its aim is to mobilize support for teachers and to ensure that the needs of future generations will continue to be met by teachers. World Teachers' Day represents a significant token of the awareness and understanding for the vital role of teachers. Issues & challenges

Though Teacher Community is an important entity in our country but there is a recurrent comment in education circles, that “the teaching profession has hit rock bottom. The profession is associated with paradoxical perceptions of being on the one hand, the oldest and noblest of professions as practiced by Prophets, the ancient philosophers and Sufis alike, but is also simultaneously seen , on the other hand ,as the last career choice for merit-worthy, capable people.

Institute of Education and Research University of Peshawar has recently conducted a study “A Critical Appraisal of the Social Status of Teachers in Peshawar, Capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan” to investigate perception of the people about teachers, their social status and people’s rating of the teaching as compared to other professions in Peshawar, Pakistan. It was concluded that only 10% of the teachers have selected this profession by proper planning 20% have adopted it by the choice of their parents, 10% have adopted it by chance. On the basis of data analysis ,it is interesting to note that 18% parents want their children to become doctors, 15%want their children to become businessmen, 13% want their children to become pilots,10%want their children to become army officers, 10% want their children to become engineers, 8% want their children to become University teachers, 8%want their children to become judges, 4%want their children to become college teachers, 4%want their children to become lawyers, 4%want their children to become police officers, 3%want their children to become custom officers, 3% want their children to become income tax officers. No one wants to make their children Journalists, Secondary and Primary School teachers. The Way-forward

Considering the bad portrayal and representation of the teachers’ profession in public eyes, it was just a perfect time to on-board all stakeholders, acknowledge the pivotal role of teachers in spreading of enlightenment and instill high opinion about teaching career in public eyes in the official celebrations on World Teachers’ Day 2013 at district level in 25 districts throughout Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on 5 October, 2013. In order to pull-off the above stated purpose Provincial Office KP issued appropriate instructions/guidelines to Districts for holding seminars/event/function to Urge public to rekindle the tradition of paying highest regards and build the institution of teachers to build the nation, bring teaching profession in mainstream by giving them official recognition and sense of importance and appreciate best teachers for their greatest performance by awarding them with certificates.

Implementation

In accordance with Provincial Office plan, the district teams along with district education department and NGOs organized conferences and summits at their respective district headquarter on the day - October 5, 2013. This joint venture provided with an open forum where partners and participants found an opportunity to present their cause “A Call for Teachers” and convey their message to the public with respect to prevailing conditions of teachers and people expectations from teachers in universalization of quality education. Similarly the same opportunity also made it imperative for general public and other stakeholders to reassess their pre-conceived thinking about the degree of teachers’ respectability among the people. Major outcomes

As stated above, the prime objective behind celebration of WTD was to formally recognize the services of teachers for their contribution in nation building and draw public attention to the crucial importance of the role they play in society. It is very heartening to share that Provincial Office KP achieve said objective in a befitting manner by celebrating WTD 2013 in 21 districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It was a moving manifestation of close coordination between NCHD and Department of Education as almost entire events were well attended either by DOs or DDOs in the districts. Due to annual leave of DPME Nowshera, Mr. Faisal Mahmood scheduled the program of Salam Teacher Day with the Education Department. The event was held at Government Primary School for Girls Dhobi Ghat. On this occasion all the nominees were present along with circle ADOs and DDO (female). NCHD was represented by the Literacy Sector team that comprised of Mr.Faisal Mehmood, Mr. Qazi Mansoor and Miss.Shabana Roshan. The Program commenced with the recitation of the Holy Quran by Miss. Shakila. Circle ADO debated of the importance of teachers in the development of a society.

Mr. Faisal Mahmood – DPML NCHD elaborated the importance of teacher and the teaching profession in the following words. Primary school teaching is the single most important profession in the world. Teachers pass on knowledge and values to children, prepares them for further education and carriers. Teachers are the main contributors to good education. This most important profession however does not get the recognition it deserves. In the developed world, young people don’t want to become a primary school teacher anymore. In most developing countries the profession does not attract qualified and ambitious people because it is poorly remunerated. Gone are the days that a primary school teacher was a highly respected person. To attain the goal of universal and good primary school education, teaching has to become an attractive profession again. Teachers are one of the main pillars of a sound and progressive society. They bear the weight and responsibility of teaching, and, apart from parents, are the main source of knowledge and values for children. For a child between 6 and 12, there are basically three options: get no primary education, get low quality primary education or get good quality primary education. In spite of our world being immensely rich, the majority of children have to settle for option 1 or 2. At this very moment, over a hundred million children are deprived of primary education. Over 500 million children go to school but the quality of education which they acquire is very low: they have little or no books, their class-room is poorly equipped or simply doesn’t exist, or they have a teacher whose level of knowledge hardly surpasses that of a 6th grader or who is not motivated because he/she earns less than her neighbor who cleans the house of the local landlord. The universally subscribed goal that “by 2015 all children, particularly girls, children in difficult circumstances and those belonging to ethnic minorities, have access to complete free and compulsory primary education of good quality" (Declaration of The World Education Forum held in Dakar, Senegal in 2000) can only be achieved if children can have access to motivated and knowledgeable teachers. They are the resource by excellence. The books are important, the pencil and the blackboard are important and so are the chairs to sit on, but if there is no motivated teacher in front of the chairs, if there is no teacher to write on the blackboard and to teach reading, math and how to pick up

knowledge and values, the goal will never be achieved. The event concluded with the distribution of certificates among the best teachers.
