  • THE EVENING NEWS

Happy New Year to all you quilters and your families!

The Kootenay Quilters Evening Group is now 30 years old. We

started in October 1985 at Karen Makievs home with Irene

Evanoff, Judy Burley, Lori Johnson, Denise Crowley, Norma

Vecchio, and myself, Lorraine McGregor. Im sure there are

more, but you know what 30 years can do to ones memory.

Onto the present now. We had a lovely time at the annual

retreat at Lemon Creek Lodge in October. Many quilts were

begun, some finished and a good time was had by all.

We all enjoyed the wonderful Quilt Show. Congratulations and

many accolades to the women who put it all together.

    Some thoughts in my head

When I was much younger a quilter told me that quilting wasnt

rocket science, it was a piece of cake. Really? Sew a sample

inch seams are perfect, corners meet, seams lie flat and there

are no ripples or ridges. Start on your project, measure,

measure, measure, cut and sew is this where the gremlins get

their jollies? Corners dont always line up, seams dont lie flat,

    the block measures 9 X 9 5/8 how did that happen? A

piece of cake eh? I dont think so.

Speaking of cake I know what a Jelly Roll is, but what is a

Layer Cake? I think it is 10 squares of a fabric line, no doubt

dreamed up by a fabric designer and a marketing genius to sell

more fabric. Whats next? Dinner rolls in white through tan?

Fruit salad? Holiday feasts? You notice how these are all food

    related?

And now that Christmas has passed and January is upon us we

now have the time to return to serious quilting. No, its not

rocket science but its not all a piece of cake either.

Have fun and well all see you in 2016. Keep Stitchin

    - Lorraine McGregor

    HAVE YOU GOT BATTING?

The Quilts for Romania group is looking for donations of polyester batting approximately double-bed size (60x80). These can be

given to Lorraine McGregor or Sandy St Denis in night group, or Jo-Anne Niven in day group. Thank you. They are also looking for

volunteer sewers (no quilting experience necessary). If you or any one you know would like to help, feel free to contact Lorraine or

Sandy or drop by Fairview Baptist Church on Fifth St. every Tues 9:00 2:00.

    CHRISTMAS PARTY

A big heartfelt thanks to Darlene who once again made our December Potluck fun and fabulous. Thank you to Jude Schmidt and the

Glacier Harmonies for their lovely performance. Who could forget Doreens Flemings hand-quilted applique! Plus, a special mention to

Nellie for if we had a prize for the Best Christmas Sweater, she would have surely won!

    APPLIQUE GROUP

The group meets on the 2nd Wednesday of each month as Suzie Holmes. Phone 1-250-229-4250 or e-mail: [email protected]

  • WHATS UP FROM DOWN UNDER

The New Zealand block exchange has happened and we can all agree it was a great experience, but it would not have been possible

without the efforts of Bonnie for the initial organisation and to Elsie for finishing the process.

Many of us have made good use of the fabric from New Zealand that Sheila very generously

donated after we received our lovely squares from the quilting ladies of New Zealand. We

are all looking forward to completing some fabulous projects by June.

Thanks to all of you. THANK YOU SHEILA!

    - Leah Gray

    Diane is already done!

    GETTING TO KNOW

KAREN GUILBAULT is our newest member and new to quilting. She has already made several wonderful projects and finds herself

hooked. Many of you may already be familiar with her work as an artist. Her paintings have been on show in Nelsons annual Art Walk

for over 20 years. She often paints in a series and is currently working on owls with a variety of mixed-media techniques. She enjoys

experimenting and trying new techniques which translates wonderfully into her quilting. Inspired by her friend Helen Blooms beautiful

quilts, she has decided to try her hand at the craft now that she has retired from being a teaching assistant. Karen has made two bed

quilts thus far along with many smaller projects. For her first quilt, she just dove right in with her own improvisational design with a

hand-embroidered panel, pieced borders and free-motion quilting. She loves fabric and it is the beauty of the fabric that makes her

want to quilt. One of her goals for the future is to explore landscape quilts. Karens enthusiasm to try new things and equal conviction

to finish them is inspirational and we look forward to seeing more of her work. Thank you Tuula introducing Karen to guild!

  • THE KOOTENAY ART QUILTERS

In November, Emmie Roelofse from Art Foamies in Creston gave a fantastic one-day workshop on painting on fabric and using her

    custom foam stamps.

    Gloria Barb Laura

In December, they painted with melted wax crayons to create batiks.

Elsie getting ready Glorias glamper Rosemary Karen

January was all about snow, snow dyeing that is. Fabric is placed in a plastic container on a raised rack, snow (or ice) is piled on the

fabric and then the dye is sprinkled on the snow. Watch it melt and the magic will happen.
