"The team will hold meetings with officials of Disaster Management and Finance Department in Nabanna, the West Bengal state secretariat. The team will also visit Cyclone Yaas-affected areas in South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore," said the sources. Cyclone Yaas made landfall in West Bengal on May 26-27. Several districts including Purba Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur, Bankura, South 24 Pargana and Jhargram suffered the impact of the cyclone. The coastal areas like Digha and Sundarban were the worst affected.

He pointed out that labour force is moving to rural areas as there has been a lot of increase in COVID- 19 cases in urban areas and these labourers are will- ing to work in the agriculture sector for livelihood. "From the output side, you look at agriculture mar- ket data. Market for agriculture (is) just working normally everywhere," he argued. The Niti Aayog member noted that income from the agriculture sec- tor, which is a major source of earning for rural people, is intact. "So that large segment of rural income, ...it is remaining intact and rural demand on that count will not be affected," he opined. Chand added that only in case of some services which are not working in rural area, there is an issue. "I would say that the government should keep its emphasis on MGNREGA," Chand suggested.

Posing as OSD... The ‘OSD’ told Arti that a transfer list is to be released and if she wishes to move elsewhere, she will have to shell out Rs 25,000. The woman official deposited the amount in the bank account given by the man. The lady officer waited for four days and when she did not get any information about the development, she tried to contact the caller. However, the number was switched off. Arti then rang up OSD BK Shrivatsva’s number to confirm her transfer but she was surprised to know that no such transfer list was released. Shrivastav told Arti that he had not called her ever for any transfer. Shrivastav then informed Habibganj police on Saturday and a case was registered under Sections 419 and 420 of the IPC. CSP Habibganj Virendra Mishra said that the accused has been identified and will be arrested soon.

Biden’s tariff threat...

India imposed a two per cent tax starting in April last year on earnings in the country by foreign tech- nology and e-commerce companies like Amazon, Facebook and Google. It was opposed by the admin- istration of former President Donald Trump, and Biden has picked up the baton. The Trade Representative's Office said: "India's DST is unrea- sonable or discriminatory and burdens or restricts US commerce." The Office estimated the increased taxes on the selected imports from India will equal the taxes India assesses on the US companies under the DST. "Estimates indicate that the value of the DST payable by US-based company groups to India will be up to approximately $55 million per year. The level of trade covered by the action takes into account estimates of the amount of tariffs to be col- lected on goods of India and the estimates of the amount of taxes assessed by India." The other items threatened with increased duties include bamboo, window shutters, cigarette papers, pearl, copper foil and bedroom furniture. Inaugurating the new phase of trade wars, the Biden administration also threat- ened to increase tariffs on imports from five other countries -- the UK, Austria, Italy, Spain and Turkey over their DST. Explaining the reason for holding the increases in abeyance for the six countries, Tai said it was to help the international negotiations on taxation. "The US remains committed to reaching a consensus on international tax issues through the OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development) and G20 processes. Today's actions provide time for those negotiations to continue to make progress while maintaining the option of imposing tariffs."

Renowned poet Manzar... He said that during summers he gets an average bill of Rs 6000 per month while during other months the bill stands at around Rs 3-4000 only.

It seems that Chinese troops deployed opposite the East- ern Ladakh sector have been badly affected by the extreme cold conditions in the area as the People's Liberation Army has rotated 90 per cent of its manpower and brought in fresh soldiers from the hin- terland. Since the April-May time-

frame last year, China has de- ployed over 50,000 troops close to the Indian territory in east- ern Ladakh and has been maintaining them there de- spite the limited troops with- drawal from forward loca- tions in Pangong lake sector. "The Chinese have brought

in fresh troops from the hin- terland to replace the troops who had been there for the last one year. Around 90 per cent of their troops have been rotated," sources told ANI. The reason for this rotation

may be that the Chinese

Al Qaeda leadership resides in Af-Pak region: UN report

NEW DELHI: A United Nations Security Council report released earlier this week has once again established that a significant part of the leadership of Al Qaeda resides in the Afghanistan and Pakistan border region and that the terrorist organization, founded in 1988 by Osama bin Laden, and like-minded militants continue to celebrate developments in Afghanistan as a victory for Taliban's cause and thus for global radicalism. The 12th report of the Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team concerning the Taliban and other associated individuals

and entities constituting a threat to the peace stability and security of Afghanistan reveals that the security situation in Afghanistan remains as tense and challenging as at any time in recent history, with uncertainty surrounding the peace process and the Taliban proving resilient in the face of pressure from Afghan security forces, It also said that the Taliban and Al Qaeda remain closely aligned and show no indication of breaking ties as the United States of America and allied forces complete their withdrawal from Aighanistan by September

PDP leader Waheed Parra, currently lodged in Srinagar jail on charges of terror funding, enjoys access to TV and outside food, all special privileges denied to other prisoners, sources said. The reality of Parra's detention is different from what has been presented in a report released by Special Rapporteurs of UN. It seems with their "dead consciousness and blatant lies", officials in UN are defaming sovereignty, security, sources said. Meanwhile, a police chargesheet alleged that Parra was an asset for Pak-based terror groups and his 13 years’ joumey as a journalist and politician was a "saga of subterfuge, deceit and double dealing’.

Leopards now reien in Tiger’s Palamu abode AGENCIES / Ranchi

Leopards now rein in Pala- mus Tiger Reserve, known globally for undertaking the world's first census for big cats in 1932. Bizarre as it may sound,

the fact is that a reserve that once took pride in its tiger populace is now a safe haven for about 150 leopards. Tourists these days flock Palamu Tiger Reserve to have glimpses with leaps of leopards, say officials, who add that no tiger has been sighted since a tigress was found dead in February 2020 near Betla National Park.

"We now have about 150 leopard population, which has become an attraction for tourists coming to Pala- mu...Happy tourists are of- ten seen taking photo- graphs with the leop- ards... However, we are mak- ing all efforts to facilitate the return of the tigers," Chief Conservator of For-

est (CCF) and Project Direc- tor, PTR YK Das told PTI. Attributing "left-wing ex-

tremism activities, move- ment of security personnel, increased human encroach- ment and depleting prey bases in core and buffer zones of the reserve spread across about 1130 square km" as the main reasons be- hind the big cats abandon- ing their former safe haven and migrating to forests in neighbouring Chhattisgarh and Odisha, Das said restoration of prey base among other measures were on to lure them back. He said that though no

tigers were detected in the last All India Tiger Estima- tion, one tigress was found dead in PTR in February 2020 which establishes that tiger used to be there. "We are working on a re-

location project to preserve PTR's ecology and improve its prey base to facilitate the return of tigers. Initial- ly, we will be relocating in- habitants of two villages - Latu and Kujrum to outside PTR... The relocation proj- ect involves a 300 square km area, which is human infested. We will be relo ing 22 families of these t villages," Das said.

Rahul ‘ticks’ govt over blue, says be C-wary NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday took a swipe at the Modi govern- ment, saying it is fighting for a blue tick while leaving peo- ple to become "aatmanirbhar" (self-reliant) to get Covid vac- cines. Hitting back at the Congress

leader, the BJP said he should get out of social media and work on the ground. The par- ty also asked him to speak to chief ministers of Congress- ruled states regarding alleged scams and irregularities in , the Covid vaccination pro- gramme there. Gandhi's remarks came a

day after outrage over the removal of ‘blue tick' badge from the personal accounts of Vice President M Venka- iah Naidu and RSS top functionaries, including Mohan Bhagwat, by Twit- ter, only to restore it later. "The Modi govt is fight-

ing for the blue tick. If you want a Covid vaccine, then be self-reliant," he said in a sarcastic tweet in Hindi, using the hashtag "#Priori- ties". Taking a dig at Gandhi,

been revoked. "Malayalam is as Indian as

any other Indian language. Stop language discrimina- tion," Gandhi said in another tweet.
