It’s that timeagain to digdeep and shellout a fireworksdonation. Yourcontribution willhave everythingto do with thesize and lengthof this year’sfireworksextravaganzaover IsabellaLake.

You see, themore moneythat is raisedfor the fire-works show, the bigger theshow!

The fireworks display, whichis funded entirely by donations, once again finds itself short ofthe monitary fuse needed toreach the show’s ignition point.

The phrases “the sky’s thelimit” and “more bang for thebuck” truly apply when it comesto this annual show, which isdirectly related to the amount ofdonations received from indi-viduals and businesses by theChamber.

The event sponsor, the KernRiver Valley Chamber ofCommerce, is looking to light afire under people for donationsneeded for the Saturday, July 6show.

The fireworks this year arescheduled to rocket over the

lake from Engineer’s Point onSaturday, July 6, at approxi-mately 9 p.m. But the size andshape of this year’s (and nextyear’s) display, as always, willbe determined by funds collect-ed over the next week.

The Kern River ValleyChamber of Commerce hasplaced big red firecracker canis-ters for donations at businesslocations around the Valley.

For those willing to shell outfor this explosive event, individ-

ual shells canbe sponsoredby size as well, proving thatwhen it comesto fireworks, size does mat-ter. The morebucks the big-

ger the BANG! Shells can besponsored from $10 for a 2-inchshell, to a dam-buster (not liter-ally, of course) 10-inch bomb-shell for $500. All funds godirectly to the fireworks pur-chase.

Fireworks donations can bemade at the Kern River ValleyChamber of Commerce office at6404 Lake Isabella Blvd., LakeIsabella across from the SeniorCenter, by mail to KRVCC, P.O.Box 567, Lake Isabella, CA 93240-0567 or online using PayPal orcredit card at www.fireworks.kernrivervalley. com

lost shoe. The old bat better lookout.

Next I looked into the food sheserves. Broth? How much nutri-tion is there if there is no bread tosop it up? There is also a questionhere, did she get the food fromfood stamps and did the kids geteverything they were entitled to?Probably not. So these kids getsome watered down broth, nobread and to make things worse, she whips them all and sends themto bed. That should wake up thelocal police and get them over tothe shoe. Posthaste.

Think of it, If the hungry kids are jammed

in a shoe, crying and hurting fromthe beating they have just receivedand not even bread to eat, I canonly hope that the authoritiesarrest the old crone and put her inthe slammer.

It took 219 years, but in 2013this old rhyme was rewritten byme so I could feel good aboutreading it to my great-grandchil-dren.

There was a sweet little Lady who lived in a ShoeShe had foster children and loved them all too!

She said Thanks to God’s Storehouse, for sending

them breadThen she kissed them all fondly

As they skipped, off to bed!

I know one thing. I will feel a lotbetter reading my great-grandchil-dren my version. I’m also going tocheck on some of the other nurs-ery rhymes for contents.

Rod MiddleworthKern River Courier Columnist

Recently I waslooking through abook of nurseryrhymes and wasplanning to readthem to our great-grandchildren.

It was then thatI noticed a fewthings that struckme wrong. So Isat down andlooked over theoldest rhyme which was written in1764. It was one I’ve heard all mylife but never thought about itbefore. It goes like this:

There was an old Woman who lived in a Shoe

She had so many Children she did’t know what to do!

So she gave them some broth, without any bread

Then whipped them all soundly and put them to bed.

Wow! Talk about mean-spirited!Obviously this was a case for ChildProtective Services. I hope theyhave been called.

Let’s break this rhyme downsome more.

First off, this is not the way oldladies should behave. Secondly, was she pocketing foster caremoney? And where did she find ashoe big enough to live in.Especially one full of kids. Perhapsthe shoe belongs to the giant fromJack and the Beanstalk. And if so,he is going to be looking for his

Most every-where you drive inthe area aroundLake Isabella, youcan’t miss camp-grounds, camp-sites and thecampers, who arecamping there! AsI pass these places,my mind flashesback to the wonderful camping expe-riences I had as a child with my par-ents and family and with my ownchildren and family more recently. But my mind also wanders into thehistory of God’s people as told in theBible. The Israelites had a colossalcampout!

The Israelites had just been res-cued and liberated from the bondageof their slavery in Egypt (Exodus 5-12). They saw God do some prettyawesome things! They’d seen the RedSea parted, so they could walkthrough the bottom on dry ground(Ex.14). As they proceeded towardCanaan, they’d seen water flow froma rock (Ex.17). They’d seen “manna”(Hebrew for "”what is it” because thatwas their first reaction to its appear-ance) supernaturally appear on theground each morning, and they’dbeen fed by miraculously provided, easily harvestable quail (Ex.16).

Yet when they arrived at their des-tination, they balked at God’s com-mand to go in and take the PromisedLand, as 10 of the 12 spies, who’dgone in to scope out the land, report-

Schlensker

What a campout!ed that the people there were toohuge to defeat. So God’s chosen peo-ple refused to do as they were told. That constituted a denial of God’sability to enable them to conquer thepeople who were occupying the landwhich He had promised to give toAbraham and to his descendents.

So God said (loose translation)“Ok, folks, have it your way. Don’t gointo the land now. Instead you willhang out in the wilderness for 40years until you’re all dead, and thenyour offspring will go in and receivethe inheritance I have prepared anddesignated for you” (Numbers 13-14).

What a campout- a 40-year cam-pout! (Nm.14:34) And all becausethey didn’t trust God’s providence inspite of their witnessing His almightypower and experiencing His incredi-ble love.

The Israelites’ colossal campoutwas not quite as pleasant as the oneswe see being enjoyed in our neigh-borhood today or the ones we’veexperienced ourselves. Yet God stillprovided for all their needs duringthose “Wilderness Wanderings,” andcontinued to preserve them as Hispeople, through whom He wouldeventually inject Himself into themainstream of humanity. In spite ofHis people’s unfaithfulness, though,God never gave up on them. As wetrust that same God, we stand inwholesome fear of His no-nonsensecharacter, but also live securely in Hisprovidence of our physical needs andpeacefully in the love He demonstrat-ed in His sacrificing His Son, Jesus,on our behalf, which amounts to Hisprovidence of our eternal spiritualneed through faith in Him.

Bodfish Bob’s Scotch Egg

8 eggs17½ oz pork sausage meat1 tsp dried sage½ tsp dried thymepinch cayenne pepper½ tsp freshly ground black pepper4 T plain flour4½ oz fresh white bread crumbsvegetable oil for deep frying

Bring a large pan of water to aboil and cook six of the eggs for 4-5minutes until they are medium- tohard-boiled. Drain and run undercold water until cooled (this will pre-vent the yolks from discolouring).Peel and set aside. Beat the remain-ing two eggs together in a bowl andset aside. In a bowl, mix together thesausage meat, sage, thyme, cayennepepper and pepper until well com-bined.

Divide the sausage mixture evenlyinto six portions. Roll each portioninto a ball, then flatten out to form athin patty. Wrap each patty aroundthe peeled boiled eggs, smoothing

out the joint and making sure thereis no egg left exposed.

Roll the scotch eggs in the flour, then dip in the beaten egg and roll inthe fresh breadcrumbs. Dip the coat-ed eggs once more in the egg, thenagain in the breadcrumbs. Half-fill a deep, heavy-based panwith the vegetable oil and heat to340 degrees, checking the tempera-ture with a digital thermometer. Frythe scotch eggs in small batches for4-5 minutes, turning the eggs occa-sionally, or until golden-brown allover and cooked through. Removefrom the oil with a slotted spoon anddrain on kitchen paper.

Serve the scotch eggs immediate-ly, sliced in half to reveal the softyolk.

Bodfish Bob’s How to Poach an Egg

Pour water into a large skillet to adepth of about two inches. Bring toa boil. Break an egg into a cup.Carefully slide the egg from the cupinto the boiling water. Add as manyas six eggs to the water. Immediatelyreduce the heat so the water barelymoves. Cook for about 4 minutes, oruntil the yolks are still runny but thewhites are firm. To test, lift an eggout of the water with a slotted spoonand gently press the thickest part ofthe white with a finger. If it feels firmto the touch, it’s done. Drain lightly, season and serve.

Sad thing is, many people are eli-gible for this program and don’teven know it. Hopefully, readers inthe Kern River Valley will pass thisinformation on to their family mem-bers who may qualify for this benefitwhich has no strings attached to it.

Medicare Part D is the prescrip-tion drug benefit.
