From Trees to a Modern Wood-Based MaterialKRONOPLYOSB(OSBstandsfor“orientedstrandboard”)isformedfrom long, slender strands or strips of wood (called flakes in the trade) which are layered in specific directions. It is a synthesis of a natural rawmaterialandinnovativetechnology.WemakeourKRONOPLYOSBboardsontheworld’smostadvancedsystemsforcontinuousproductionofwood-basedmaterials,usingonlyfreshthinningsfromsustainablymanagedforests. Three Layers – Maximum StabilityEveryKRONOPLYOSBproducthasthreelayers:twosurfacelayersand a core layer. In order to optimise the stability of the finished boards,thenaturalwoodstrandsofthecoverlayersarealignedinthe direction of production, which defines the principal orientation. Thestripsthatgointothetwo-plycorelayerrunperpendiculartotheorientationofthesurfacelayers.ThisapproachmaximisesthebendingstrengthofallKRONOPLYOSBproducts.

Formaldehyde-Free BindersBefore being pressed at a high pressure and temperature, the flakes aremixedwithasmallamountofbinder.Thisconsistsofcompletelyformaldehyde-freebondingresins,thusensuringthatKRONOPLYOSBproductscontainonlytheformaldehydethatnaturallyoccursinthewood flakes. Other constructions to meet fi re protection requirements can be implemented in compliance with DIN 4102-4. Use in Roofs KRONOPLYOSBisanidealload-bearingboardforroofs.Itsvapour-block-ingfunctionmaximisestheenergy-savingpotentialofKRONOTHERMfi breboard insulating materials. When using the water-vapour-permeable product KRONOTEC MDF (medium-density fi breboard) for the underroof panels,youcancreateroofswithouthavingtoresorttovapour-perme-ablemembranesorsealinglayers.Representingthestateoftheartintechnologyandcomplyingwithcurrentstandards,KRONOPLYmayalsobe used in fl at roof constructions. In2009theGottfriedfamilyinRöslau,Germanydecidedtoaddanotherstoreytoanannextheyhadalreadybuiltontotheirsingle-familyhouse.Theyalsowantedtotakeadvantageoftheopportunitytorenovate.Itwasimportanttothemtocompletetheprojectquicklyandwithoutlettingtheconstructionworkintroduceanydampintotheexistingbuilding.Theychoseasystemconsistingofwood-basedmaterialsfromKRONO.

A Consistently Pleasant Indoor Climate“Wemadetherightdecision,”saystheGottfriedfamilynow.“Inbothwinterandsummerwenowenjoyaveryagreeable,constantindoorclimate.”Thisfeel-goodclimatewasimplementedwithKRONOPLYOSB,whichlendstheconstructionahighdegreeofstabilitywithoutaddingmuchadditionalweight.

Roof Insulation Without Loss of SpaceTheGottfriedfamilydecidedtoinsulatetheroofwithKRONOTHERMfl ex and water-vapour-permeable KRONOTEC DP50, which avoided any loss of space on the top fl oor.
