This is the exciting highlight of any school visit and is a truly unforgettable experience. With an ex-coal miner as their personal guide, pupils ride the cage 140 metres underground to discover first-hand what life was like as a miner.

Choose from:

Meet a Miner TourPupils go on a chronological journey through mining history from the 1840s, when whole families, including young children, worked together underground, right through mechanisation and up to the present day. A great tour to show how mining has changed over time.

Hands on TourThis underground tour can be tailored to suit your group and is particularly good for SEN pupils. A tour can include the following interactive areas:> Underground stables - muck out, harness and feed

a model horse> 19th century mining - get your hands dirty and work

as a family to dig the coal> Lighting area - find out about lighting through

the ages and play some lighting games> Geology - see a real coal face and

handle rocks and fossils.

Meet an expert, take part in role play, handle objects, explore your local history or solve a scientific problem. All of our workshops have been developed with teachers to enhance and stimulate learning across the curriculum.

Aunty Brendas Pit Village Past KS1 KS2

What was it like growing up in a coal-mining village? Pupils develop historical enquiry skills as they look at artwork and handle objects, sing and complete daily chores to find out about mining life in the recent past.

Sally Sam Fletcher It's a Hard Life KS1 KS2

Travel back to the 19th century when women and children were working in mines. What were working conditions like? What significant events happened to change the lives of these people? Meet Sam or Sally Fletcher and take part in role-play activities to find out.

SUBJECT FOCUS: History (Local History, Chronological knowledge beyond 1066)

AVAILABLE: Monday - Friday

DURATION: 30 minutes

Dig Deeper KS2Everything you wanted to know about mining but were afraid to ask. Dig Deeper with one of our miners and work together to take apart an interactive model of Caphouse Colliery. Pupils will handle objects and ask questions to find out how mining has changed over the last 100 years.

AVAILABLE: Tuesdays and Thursdays

Fire and Forces Science ChallengePupils experience the power of coal at the blacksmith’s forge and watch a demonstration of working machinery. Then, working as a mining team they complete a science and engineering challenge.

SUBJECT FOCUS: Science (mechanisms, forces, working scientifically)

AVAILABLE: Wednesdays and Fridays

COST: £50 per workshop

DURATION: 1 hour 30 minutes

Science Show Our new explosive science show explores the invention of the flame-safety lamp. Pupils will travel back in time to meet the scientific pioneers, Humphry Davy and George Stephenson and find out how their inventions changed mining forever.

DURATION: 45 minutes

Rocks and Fossils

KS2What is coal? How was it formed? What do fossils look like? Make rocks memorable with this hands-on workshop in which pupils investigate rocks and create their own ‘fossil’ to take back to the classroom.

Science Explorer TrailsWhy have the steps eroded? Why is steel used for making horse shoes? Our teacher-led explorer trails show the practical application of Science topics around the Museum.Choose from: Rocks, Materials and Habitats

The Museum SiteThe Museum is set on a large site across two former coal mines, Caphouse Colliery and Hope Pit. Most of the galleries are based at Caphouse. There are so many things to see and do, which will excite your pupils’ curiosity and fuel learning across the curriculum.

Authentic pit buildingsOur historic Caphouse site dates back to the 1790s and many of the original pit buildings are open for you to explore. See the steam winding engine house, which dates back to 1876, visit the pithead baths, where a miner’s shift started and finished, or see the ponies in the stables.

Galleries and ExhibitionsMining Lives Gallery - Explore interactive displays to find out about home and community, sports and leisure, disasters and strikes. (Local history, changes within living memory)

Coal Interface Gallery - Get up close to the Museum’s technology collection and find out how inventions through time have made miners’ working lives safer and more efficient. (STEM topics, Local history)

1842 Gallery - Explore the working conditions and lives of the women and children who worked underground in the early 19th century, before the 1842 Coal Mines Act changed their lives. (Local history, Industrial Revolution)

Horsekeeper Talks Visit the stable yard and listen to one of our horsekeepers tell you about the working lives of the ponies.Available: Daily at 11.30 and 13.30

Hope PitHow did miners get down the mine? How did they breathe underground? How did they power their machines? Find the answers to these science questions and more with a visit to Hope Pit, a smaller colliery dating back to the 1830s. Hope Pit is approximately 5-10 minutes’ walk from Reception. (STEM topics)

Nature Trail and reed bedsFollow the half-mile Nature Trail and see how an old colliery spoil tip now creates a lush habitat for wildlife, plants and trees. Amaze your pupils with a trip to the reed beds to see how the Museum cleans the bright orange iron-rich minewater pumped from underground. (Habitats, Human and physical geography)

Adventure playgroundOur adventure playground is suitable for children aged 5-11.

We welcome teacher-led visits, but they do need to be booked in advance.

Pupils’ activity trails and teachers’ resources, which you can use to support a whole day’s visit or to complement a workshop, are available on our website www.ncm.org.uk/learning.

Look out for the Art Cart too, which is stocked with drawing materials.

Loans BoxesLoans boxes contain original objects, photographs, background information and activities, which stimulate curiosity and hands-on learning. Boxes are free to borrow for up to a month. If you are unable to visit the Museum, or would like a session in school to help you prepare for your visit, then let us come to you!

Picture a Miner

KS1 and SEN pupilsCan pictures talk to us? What can they tell us about our local mining heritage? Pupils use sensory and visual resources to find out what a miner is and does, and go on to create a communal piece of artwork.* This workshop was developed in partnership with a local Special School and is a great workshop to prepare pupils for a visit.

Subject focus: History (Historical enquiry), Art

Sally Fletcher and the 1842 Royal Commission KS2Meet Sally Fletcher, a Victorian miner. Through role-play and an historical investigation pupils will find out how Sally’s life changed when the 1842 Mines Act was passed, prohibiting women and children from working underground. Subject focus: History (Local history, historical enquiry)

Lights Out KS1What is light? Where does light come from? How do miners see in the dark? This interactive workshop explores reflective, transparent and opaque materials, as well as introducing pupils to the various light sources used by miners past and present.Subject focus: Science (Light)

Supervision requirementsAround the Museum site 1 adult: 10 pupilsUnderground tour 2 adults: 17 pupilsPlease see our Practical Information document for further health and safety information.

SEN groupsWe welcome visits from special schools and will always try to meet your specific requirements. Most of the Museum site is accessible by wheelchair and there are accessible toilets in the main visitor centre.

Lunch FacilitiesA picnic area is available for packed lunches, weather permitting. There is also a shared indoor space where pupils can eat their lunch, which will be allocated to you when you book. We ask you to leave these areas clean and tidy after use.

Getting to the MuseumThe Museum is on the A642, halfway between Wakefield and Huddersfield, easily accessible from the M1 and M62.There is free coach parking available. For local schools (5 miles radius) we can support you with a ‘parent drop-off ’ or a ‘minibus run’. Please let our Bookings Officer know if you wish to do this.

Toilets Coat and Bag StorageLockable cupboards are available for coats and bags in the shared lunch area. However, space is limited, so if possible please leave belongings on the coach. The Museum cannot take any responsibility for items left in the cupboards. Toilets are located near the shared lunch space.

Booking a room You can book the Education Activities Room in the Learning Curve for the day if you need a base during your visit. The charge for this is £40.

Museum ShopThe Museum shop stocks resources for teachers and items suitable for children. Goody bags are available on request. Supervised groups of up to ten pupils can visit the shop at any one time.

Cancellation of BookingsPlease let us know as soon as possible if you wish to cancel a visit. If a workshop is cancelled with less than five working days’ notice, the full amount will be payable.
