A word from the President

The field of Korean Studies has been steadily growing. The number of undergraduate students enrolled in Korean programs is on the rise. The research profile of postgraduate students is promising and exciting. Academic publications on Korean language, history, culture and society have also enriched and deepened our understanding of Korea. At this time of burgeoning growth and energy, I think it important for us to engage in a broader intellectual communication more actively than ever before. In this vein, the Asian Studies Association of Australia (ASAA) and KSAA have worked together to revise the composition of ASAA Councils. The entity formerly known as “Japan and Northeast Asia Council” has been renamed as “Japan and Korea Council.” The presence of “Korea” in one of the key councils at ASAA will give the field of Korean studies more visibility and promises more opportunities for fruitful cooperation with scholars in other areas of Asian studies. I hope that many of you will be able to participate in ASAA conferences and share your latest research findings.

University of Queensland Bailey, Penny Bailey The National Museum of Korea Museum Network Fellowship has been held annually since 2012. The aim of the fellowship is to bring together researchers of Korean art history from all over the world in order to encourage research, networking and collaboration. As part of the programme, participants are asked to present a paper on some aspect of their research. I first attended in 2013. This year, past participants who have published in the field of Korean art history, were invited back. The call was also extended to museum curators. The 2016 cohort included participants from Europe, the United States and Australia. In addition to a research colloquium, we attended a number of lectures on topics such as the history of NMK, Shilla tombs, and the development of Korean cartography. We also toured the conservation areas and storage facilities of the museum, and enjoyed a two-day tour to visit the Puyŏ and Kongju branches of the museum.
