    Tempo in Your Feet

    Grade Level:PK-2

    3-5

    Integrated Subjects

    Performing Arts-Music

    Lesson Overview

Students experience various tempos by moving to a chanted rhythm, which will later enable them to identify

the tempo of music selections they hear.

    Student Learning Overview

Students will be able to name and describe the following tempo markings: adagio, andante, moderato,

allegro, andpresto. They will be able to move kinesthetically at each named tempo, and be able to identify

the tempo of a piece of music they hear by moving to the rhythm.

    Learning Sequence

LESSON 1: 1. Teacher introduces the concept of tempo. Discuss with students things they know about that

go different speeds. Discuss/solicit the meaning of the word "tempo" in the context of music. 2. Using poster

or overhead, teacher introduces the first tempo chant: "Tempo, time, rhythm, beat; feel the tempo in your

feet." Students march and swing their arms in time to the chant. Repeat until the chant is familiar and

students can do it from memory. 3. Using poster or overhead, teacher introduces the moderatochant.

Students practice moving/marching to the chant as they speak it in rhythm. 4. Repeat step 3 with all other

tempo chants. Practice moving from one chant to another change, in random order, until students are able to

speak and move with each chant. Movement of feet and arms should reflect the actual tempo being practiced.

    5. Give the chant posters to five different students; have them put themselves in order from slowest to fastest

LESSON 2: 1. Begin with a review and practice of steps 2 through 5 from Lesson 1. 2. Teacher places tempo

chant posters at various points around the room. Have students move from one tempo "station" to another,

stopping to practice the chant and movement at each one. 3. Students congregate at a central point. They start

the tempo chant, and then stop to listen. Teacher plays a music excerpt from the SFS Kids website "Radio"feature. Students begin walking/marching/moving in time to the music. Then they move to the poster

representing the tempo they believe matches that musical selection. There will be some disagreement,

sometimes depending upon which instruments they focus their listening on! Teacher then states the correct

tempo. Students return to congregating point. 4. Repeat step 3 for several selections from the SFS Kids

website, selecting music at differing tempos, as time and attention allow. 5. If desired, students may use

rhythm instruments as they listen to further help identify the tempo.

    Assessment

Assessment is by teacher observation of how students move to each tempo chant, and whether they are able

to identify the tempo of a musical selection they hear.

Classical Music Used In This Lesson

Twenty selections were chosen from the SFS Kids website Radio, four at each of the five tempos being

    taught. (A list is attached.)

    Materials & Equipment

Tempo chant posters or overheads; computer with internet access and audio adequate to be heard throughout

the classroom; PowerPoint presentation created from charts below; rhythm instruments, optional

    Time Required

    Two 45-minute lessons

    National Music Standards

Listening to, analyzing, and describing music.

    State Standards

    Arizona: Music 3AM-F1; PO1, PO2

    Connections to Pathways to Integration

BLUE: Music as its own content area

    Inclusion/English Language Learner

The rhyme and repetition of the chants, as well as kinesthetic integration, allows for success by all students.

    Teacher to Teacher

Some students are very focused on getting the "right" answer when identifying the tempo of a piece they

hear. There is an opportunity, with more practice and exposure to instrumentation/orchestration, to help

students understand that one part of the orchestra may be playing a quick rhythm while another section is

    slow.
