Welcome to Kota Tua Creative Festival.
You are the reason we are here. Whether you are part of the creative communities, building owners, government officials, street vendors, adorers of Kota Tua or passers-by, we are together in this 2-day special event to explore the unique open spaces and abandoned heritage buildings in the treasured yet often forgotten part of Jakarta.
This festival is inspired by centuries old urban forms and dynamic social spaces that take place here today, in light of the renewed spirit of Kota Tua. What are the different ways to reoccupy heritage buildings with contemporary uses without losing its historical memories? The festival program – music, art, design, and culture – focuses on creative fields as an essential force in the revitalization of Kota Tua.
One of the missions of Kota Tua revitalization plan is to encourage a sense of belonging and love for the city. To achieve this, a thoughtful restoration is needed not only on its physical spaces, but also on the intangible social spaces. Learning from Venice, festivals -which can be realized in short period of time with minimum facilities due to its temporality- could be an effective starting point towards physical revitalization of Kota Tua.
As Ahok (Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, Acting Governor of Jakarta) puts it- Kota Tua can be the Jewel of Jakarta- it shall not stay a dream, yet a feasible plan. And the best way to carry out the plan is to start oneself and not to wait for others. When one building is revived and re-souled, more buildings will follow. More creative industries will join in. Along with new infrastructure and facilities, more buildings will be renovated. In the exhibition ‘Jakarta Old Town Reborn: 7 Projects for the City,’ we work with the best of Dutch and Indonesian architects to deliver specific concepts which can be realized today.

Kota Tua Creative Festival is a pilot project of Creative Public Spaces Program, an enterprise which initiates the creation of temporary and permanent physical public spaces in the city. It is made in close cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy and the Liveable Cities Task Force of the Indonesian Diaspora Network.

Creative economy is very important for the future growth and quality of life of Indonesia. For this we need to have the creative people and the next generation really arise and develop their human capital to develop the diverse creative. Thus, the spirit of the first Kota Tua Creative Festival is to encourage creative people -- Indonesian architects, artists, designers, and other creative fields -- to enter the public realm and bring visible changes in the social and physical spaces in Jakarta and other cities.
KTCF is a program of Creative Public Spaces -- an initiative for the creation of temporary and permanent physical public spaces to be built in central locations in Jakarta, where open public spaces should have existed. Public spaces are a platform of expression, communication, and collaboration, an essential space for creative communities. Creative economy has enormous potential to improve the city’s image and quality of life through leveraging unique perspectives from unique individuals and communities, those whose passion allow them to unlock the potential of Indonesia’s rich natural resources, cultural heritage and diversity.
In alignment with various programs from Agency of Arts Development, Agency of Creative Economy based on Arts & Culture, and the 2014 Ministry of Tourism and Creativity (Director General for Creative Economy based on Arts and Culture), we hope that Kota Tua Creative Festival will inspire changes that can improve the livelihood of Indonesian citizens.
The program in Kota Tua Creative Festival also expresses a change of lifestyle as a result of increased awareness of aesthetics, which responds to the demands and progress of the contemporary society. In Kota Tua Creative Festival, this is achieved through the following programs: contemporary art and architecture exhibitions, young designers and creative culinary booths, museum walk, bike tour, performances, and many other participatory activities.
We thank the committee of Kota Tua Creative Festival and all parties who have helped made this event possible from planning to realization. We hope that Kota Tua Creative Festival can become a regular event that continues to expand opportunities for the proliferation and development of creative industries in Indonesia.

Indonesia and the Netherlands have a long shared history; and its proof can be found everywhere. Houses, office buildings, industrial monuments and archival records—all of them create trails of this history. In addition, Indonesia is rich with historical monuments, lending their nuances to the ‘painting’ of this nation’s history.
The importance of this cultural heritage deserves greater attention. This is a positive development, because the past and present of a nation and city is intertwined through national cultural heritage. To know the past is to know the present. If they disappear or are diminished, then cracks will begin to appear in the nation’s history and self. A good management of cultural heritage is not limited to the care of objects and buildings; this mission must have a wider reach, and must be oriented toward the future.
This is also applicable to Kota Tua, as a historical phenomenon uniquely related to Indonesia today. Its appeal to the youths of Indonesia is abundantly clear and is undoubtedly related to the extraordinary history of this part of the city. Kota Tua (or Kota) has always been a place where the people of Indonesia meet and interact with foreign guests in an informal setting. In addition to its historical and cultural role, this part of the city also plays an important social role in modern-day Jakarta. There is no better way to demonstrate its importance than through the daily activities at Taman Fatahillah.
But, it can be much better: Kota Tua has the almost limitless opportunity to flourish in this role. “To see is to believe”, they say, and this is what the initiative aims to do. With great enthusiasm, we have entered into this cooperation [partnership] in order to showcase Kota Tua’s vast potential. The Netherlands has a strong reputation in areas of conservation and reutilization of monuments as living and relevant aspects of today’s reality: a synergy of the old and the new. The latter is certainly no less important for Kota, and it is here that we wish to establish cooperation with relevant Indonesian partners. The Netherlands have many young and talented architects who are eager to share their works with their counterparts in Indonesia.
Also in relation to Kota, we must also mention the cooperation in water management, as part of the National Capital Integrated Development Programme. We must keep Kota from ever being submerged underwater.

We have come to the stage where the revitalization of Kota Tua area inJakarta has commenced. Not only will Kota Tua serve as an importanttourism attraction, but also it may also grow as a potential center for creativecommunities. The city of Jakarta has been working together with privateand public institutes to prepare a masterplan and action points to revitalizeKota Tua. As an example, JOTRC is focusing on the development of thebuildings and revival of commercial activities, while the city focuses on infrastructure, such as parking lots and traffic management.
Kota Tua Creative Festival is a unique event initiated by young generation ofprivate individuals with the Indonesian Diaspora Network and the Ministryof Tourism and Creative Economy. The preparation has began since May2013 when the city of Jakarta and Minister Mari Pangestu endorsed the festival as a way to test revitalization programs at Kota Tua based on creative industry.

Kota Tua has lost its spirit. Old and dying soul, degraded and abandoned are some characters that represent the conditions of Kota Tua now. About 182 neglected heritage artifacts are surrounded with decadent environment that considered undesirable place to live and/or work. Complex and intertwined problems are hidden behind its pretty yet derelict neoclassical façade. Different government initiatives have failed to restore its energy and vitality due to its minor scale and lack of coordination. Building owners claimed that renovating and maintaining a heritage building is not beneficial for them. One by one, these old buildings disappear, either through force or through neglect, crumbling away because no one cared for them. Many attempts had been made to renovate these old buildings, or to give them new functions; however, the lack of coordination, their isolated and singular efforts were not strong enough to create a lasting impact, let alone acting as a generator that could jump-start this increasingly forgotten and abandoned part of the city.The façade has frozen; however, for better or worse, its grand narration is appropriated by peddlers and squatters into a discontinued storyline.
Jakarta Old Town Reborn (JOTR) decided to take actions for the future of Kota Tua. JOTR invites 7 Dutch and Indonesian notable architects to collaborate with local government and building owners to reprogram 6 heritage buildings and 1 landscape area located along Kali Besar and Fatahillah Square. We’ve gone through several workshops, seminars, debates, site visits, negotiations with stake holders, consultations with government agencies, and come up with ‘archipunctural urban renewal strategy’ to spread six distinct projects that is interconnected by a larger green master plan of Kota Tua. JOTR uses ‘archipunctural’ solution to inject new life for Kota Tua and increase the livability of the historical old town district with a small, design-oriented approach. This group of pilot projects should act as exemplary urban magnets to restore Kota Tua energy to continue its urban narrative.
JOTR is initiated by Erasmus Huis and RumahAsuh, in collaboration with seven distinct personas or architectural firms (andramatin architects, djuhara+djuhara, Han Awal& Partners, KCAP, MVRDV, NiekRoozen feat. Wageningen University, and OMA). While, the archipunctural strategy is proposed by SHAU. It is also supported by the Embassy of the Netherlands, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, IAI-EU, Tropica Greeneries, MPYK Studio and the Kota Tua Creative Festival curatorial team. Jakarta Old Town Revitalization Corporation has pioneered a pilot project of the conversion of Post Office building into a Contemporary Art gallery and Visitor’s Center, opened in March 2014. As a continuation to the pilot project, we’re proud and happy to present our proposals for Kota Tua in this exhibition. However, we invite your participation to actively engage in this project by critically (but not cynically) evaluating these proposals and think thoroughly the kind of narration that Kota Tua should continue.
With this project, together we shall witness the existing abandoned monuments of Kota Tua will be reborn to continue its narrative and give a new spirit to Jakarta.
Kota Tua telah kehilangan jiwanya. Menua dan hampir mati, terdegradasi dan ditinggalkan, adalah karakter yang merepresentasikan kondisi Kota Tua saat ini.Sekitar 182 artefak
peninggalan colonial terbengkalai, dikelilingi oleh lingkungan yang buruk dan berpolusi, dihindari sebagai tempat hidup dan/atau bekerja. Wajah usang neoklasik-nya menyimpan
permasalahan yang kompleks dan berbelit. Berbagai inisiatif telah dilakukan baik oleh pihak swasta maupun pemerintah, namun tidak banyak membangkitkan vitalitasnya, bahkan
satu persatu gedung tua punah, baik disengaja maupun rubuh sendiri karena kurangnya perawatan dan pemeliharaan. Banyak gedung tua sudah dicoba renovasi dan diberi fungsi
yang baru namun karena kurangnya koordinasi, terisolasi dan cenderung harus berjuang sendiri maka tidak cukup kuat memberikan dampak apalagi sebagai generator yang
diharapkan bisa menghidupkan kembali kawasan Jakarta Kota yang semakin ditinggalkan dan dilupakan. Wajahnya telah dibekukan, namun, narasinya diteruskan oleh pedagang kaki
lima dan penghuni liar untuk membuatcerita yang sama sekali baru.
Jakarta Old Town Reborn (JOTR) menawarkan sebuah masa depan untuk Kota Tua. JOTR mengundang 7 tim arsitek dari Belanda dan Indonesia untuk bekerja sama dengan
pemerintah dan pemilik bangunan untuk menghidupkan 6 bangunan bersejarah serta sebuah bidang lansekap disekitar Kali Besar dan lapangan Fatahilah. Kami mengadakan
loka karya, seminar, debat, kunjunganlahan, bernegosisasi dengan para stakeholder, berkonsultasi dengan aparat pemerintah, dan sepakat dengan sebuah ide ‘archipunctural
urban renewal strategy’. Strategi tersebut berfokus kepada enam buah proyek arsitektural yang disebar di beberapa tempat, kemudian dihubungkan oleh sebuah master plan lansekap.
Walau skalanya kecil dan berorientasi desain, proyek-proyek ini akan bekerja secara ‘archipuntural’ (architecture + acupunture), menyuntikkan aktivitas-aktivitas baru untuk
menghidupkan Kota Tua dan menjadikan kawasan bersejarah tersebut layak ditinggali. Proyek-proyek ini akan menjadi daya tarik baru Kota Tua untuk melanjutkan narasi urbannya.
JOTR dimotori oleh Erasmus Huis dan Rumah Asuh, yang berkolaborasi dengan tujuh karatkter/firma arsitektur (andramatin architects, djuhara+djuhara, Han Awal & Partners,
KCAP, MVRDV, Niek Roozen bersama Wageningen University, dan OMA).Sedangkan, masterplan diusulkan oleh SHAU. Program ini juga didukung oleh Kedutaan Belanda,
Kementerian Pariwisata dan Ekonomi KreatifIndonesia, IAI-EU, Tropica Greeneries, MPYK Studio serta Kota Tua Creative Festival curatorial team.
Salah satu proyek perintis telah dibuka bulan Maret 2014 lalu, Kantor Pos Kota Tua dikonversi menjadi Musium Seni Kontemporer serta Pusat Informasi Wisata Kota Tua.
Sebagai kelanjutan dari rangkaian proyek ini, dengan bahagia dan berbangga, kami persembahkan rencana-rencana terhadap Kota Tua dalam pameran ini. Tak lupa kami
mengundang partisipasi anda untuk secara aktif terlibat dalam proyek ini untuk secara aktif mengkritisi (tapi tidak dengan sinis) danmengevaluasi rencana-rencana ini, serta sama-
sama memikirkan narasi apa yang harus dilanjutkan oleh Kota Tua.
Dengan proyek ini, kita akan mengubah monumen Kota Tua yang terbengkalai terlahir kembali dan melanjutkan narasinya serta memberi semangat baru kepada Kota Jakarta.

A contemporary Indonesian architect, both Isandra Matin Ahmad, the man and the firm that bears his name, andra matin, are known
for clean, modern creations that attempt to use space in a way that reflects and is sensitive to its environment. Upon inspection, these deceptively
simple, straightforward buildings represent a sophisticated interplay of internal and external boundaries and contain subtle ambiguities that
imbue them with a certain underlying tension and dynamism. Andra Matin (Aang) is one of
the founders of Arsitek Muda Indonesia (Young Architects of Indonesia, AMI), which has
greatly influenced the progress of architecture in Indonesia. His publications include Haikk! in
2008 by Borneo publications. A frequent lecturer at universities in Indonesia he has won numerous
awards including the Association of Indonesian Architects (Ikatan Arsitektur Indonesia, IAI), in
1999 and 2002, 2006 and 2011. His work has also appeared in various international media, and several issues in Japanese architecture magazine,
GA Houses.

Djuhara + djuhara was established in 2004 by husband and wife, Ahmad Djuhara and
Wendy Djuhara. It was previously called Firma Arsitektur Ahmad Djuhara (2001 – 2004), until Wendy joined in 2004. Both
are active members of several organizations, namely Young Architects of Indonesia (AMI),
Indonesian Architects Institute (IAI, where Ahmad was the chairman for Jakarta chapter
from 2006 to 2009) and as Committee Member of House Vision Indonesia. The firm
has won several awards, such as Citation from IAI Award for Sugiharto Steel House
(2002), IAI Award for Pondok Gede House (2008), Shining Stars Bintaro Kindergarten
(2009). The last one was also shortlisted (in the Learning Category) at the World
Architecture Festival 2010.

Han Awal & Partners was established in 1970, and currently led by Yori Antar. He is one of the
founders of AMI (Young Architects of Indonesia) in 1989 and also a freelance photographer for Aga
Khan Awards for Architecture. In 2008, he established Rumah Asuh
Foundation which focusing on preservation of colonial buildings
and Indonesian traditional architecture. The firm and
Rumah Asuh have won numerous awards including the Association
of Indonesian Architects (IAI) in 2008, 2011, and Awards of
Excellence from UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards 2012 for Wae Rebo. In 2010, he established Liga Merah
Putih (Red-White League) with photographers Oscar Matuloh and
Jay Subiakto.

bv and Atelier Loos van Vliet are currently in the process of setting up a satellite office in China in order to expand the opportunities
to work with other international design offices as well as be more directly involved in the detailed design and construction phases of
our Chinese projects.
Wageningen University & Research centre (WUR) comprises of the university and several specialised institutes. One of these institutes
is Applied Plant Research-Nursery stock. This institute is working on cultivation and use of nursery stock crops like, perennials,
avenue trees, shrubs, conifers, roses, forest and hedging plants. The focus in cultivation is on economic, environmental and social sustainability. In close cooperation with growers, mainly on-farm,
experiments are executed. In the urban environment plants can contribute to the well-being of people. This contribution is part of
the Green city concept. We always state ‘the right plant on the right place’. Plants need space above ground as well as below the surface for their development. The amount of space depends on the species, function required and the local growing conditions.

SHAU aims to design attractive buildings and cities which are socially and environmentally
responsible. The studio was established in 2008 as two independent offices in Rotterdam
(Florian Heinzelmann and DalianaSuryawinata) and Munich (Tobias Hofmann) and serves as
common platform. Since 2012 SHAU runs an office in Jakarta, Indonesia led by Yogi Ferdinand. The individual offices collaborate on a project basis
and combine their extensive working experiences in well-established and internationally-recognized architecture firms where they successfully worked
on numerous projects on various scales. We can therefore offer a broad scope of services ranging from urban to architectural project commissions.
SHAU is mostly interested in delivering outstanding design solutions while embedding societal as well as environmental concepts in the design process.

Public spaces are places where people can exist together and are free to express their voices. A collective voice is more than the sum of its individual
voices. We attempt to capture this essence in Clouds of Thoughts - a canopy composed of messages of hope from Jakarta’s diverse citizens: students,
teachers, government and private employees, street vendors, creative communities, and many more individuals that make up the city’s narrative.
The installation invites people to stroll and sit under its shade while finding these aspirations, and also becomes a visual map for the festival through its
gradients of primary colors: blue aligning to the entrance from Stasiun Kota, red aligning to the main pedestrian entrance, and yellow hovering above Fatahillah
Square. Through the installation, we celebrate the new spirit in Kota Tua revitalization, to quote Goenawan Mohamad , as a creative agenda.

Tak setiap saat, sebuah karya seni rupa mendapatkan kesempatan ‘menantang’ seperti kegiatan pameran kali ini. Karya-karya ini dipamerkan di sebuah lokasi yang jauh berbeda dengan situasi ruang di sebuah galeri atau museum seni rupa pada umumnya. Boleh jadi, tempat ini sebelumnya adalah sebuah ruang kerja atau kegiatan sehari-hari yang tak ada hubungannya sama sekali dengan ekspresi seni rupa. Kini, ruangan itu menunjukkan identitas keadaanya secara lain. Bagaimanapun kini, ruangan ini tampil sebagai suatu keadaan yang bernilai khusus: meski nampak jejak keadaan yang terabaikan namun jelas kuat memancarkan pesona sejarah dan aroma waktu yang perkasa. Keadaan tempat atau ruangan yang digunakan untuk berpameran ini ada, meski tentu juga boleh jika seseorang tak setuju, sebagai sebuah tantangan sekaligus undangan. Pesona sejarah dan aroma jejak waktu yang sedemikian kuat sebagai karakter ruang pameran ini menjanjikan semacam situasi ‘baru’ bagi kelahiran kembali gagasan yang muncul dari sebuah karya seni rupa yang mungkin tadinya dianggap telah ‘selesai’, bahkan oleh sang senimannya sendiri.
Keadaan studio masing-masing seniman tentu saja tak pernah mirip dengan bayangan tentang ruang, di sebuah galeri atau museum, yang dikehendaki setiap seniman untuk mempresentasikan karya-karya yang dikerjakannya. Sebagai tempat produksi atau penciptaan karya, ruangan studio seniman umumnya lebih lusuh dan liar, dijejali berbegai jejak gagasan, tindak tanduk eksperimentasi, atau kehendak yang keseluruhannya tak sempat dinyatakan sebagai karya. Namun demikian, ruang presentasi di sebuah bangunan tua di kompleks kota tua Jakarta ini adalah sebuah situasi ‘ke-beda-an’ yang lain. Ada bukan sebagai ruang presentasi yang netral dan anggun layaknya di ruangan galeri, namunjuga bukan situasi lusuh yang akrab sebagaimana di ruangan studio kerja para seniman. Ruangan presentasi di kota tua Jakarta ini secara persistent turut menawarkan gagasan, bahkan kembali menarik keadaan masing-masing karya pada situasi

awal ketika karya dikerjakan oleh sang seniman. Karya-karya yang dipamerkan ini bukan hanya hadir sebagai sebuah presentasi tetapi juga sebuah representasi ‘baru’ hasil campuran dari gagasan yang dimiliki masing-masing seniman dan nilai situasi yang diperagakan oleh sang ruang.
Presentasi dan representasi karya-karya seni rupa dalam pameran ini, saya anggap, merobek tabir dalam asumsi kita mengenai persoalan tentang ‘yang lama’ dan ‘yang baru.’Meski tempat pameran ini bisa dianggap sebagai ruang usang dari gedung yang sudah lama, namun pada prakteknya, karaktek ruang dan nilai situasi yang diperagakan oleh tempat ini adalah kenyataan yang ‘baru’, yang kemudian bisa dipahami sebagai kualitas yang bisa ditambahkan pada tiap-tiap karya seniman yang dipamerkan di sini. Langkah persiapan untuk presentasi pameran ini tak hendak menjadikan ruangan ini menjadi ruangan yang bersifat netral ibarat ruang di sebuah galeri atau museum. Sebaliknya, berusaha semaksimal mungkin untuk membiarkan, atau mempersilahkan keadaan ruang ‘sebagaimana adanya’. Pun karya-karya yang dipamerkan adalah karya-karya yang telah ‘selesai’ dikerjakan atau dipamerkan oleh para seniman, dan bukan karya yang disiapkan khusus untuk dipamerkan di tempat yang khas semacam ini. Dalam perkembangan seni rupa, dikenal metoda ekspresi yang disebut sebagai ‘site specific project’ (ekspresi seni rupa sebagai proyek khusus yang disiapkan berdasarkan keadaan ruang pamer bagi karya). Pameran ini jauh dari gagasan penyiapan karya sebagai sebuah karya ‘site specific project’ tersebut. Beberapa seniman hanya menyiapkan beberapa langkah penyesuaian karya yang lebih berkaitan dengan teknis pemasangan karya. Pameran ini, dan juga ruangan pameran ini, seakan-akan hendak menyiapkan kelahiran kembali masing-masing kekuatan dari karya-karya yang akan ditampilkan. Pesona sejarah, aroma jejak waktu, dan kharisma ruang yang ada di tempat ini adalah elemen lama yang jadi kekuatan baru yang seolah bekerja memperbaharui gagasan dan kreativitas para seniman.
Karya-karya dipamerkan ini, tentu saja, bukan dimaksudkan untuk ‘menghiasi’ ruang ini, tidak menghiasi dalam pengertian demi menjadikan tempat nampak lebih indah. Karya-karya yang dipamerkan ini, bagi saya, adalah sebuah contoh bagaimana kita tetap mampu mengartikulasikan sikap penghargaan
kita terhadap pelajaran mengenai hikmah waktu dan nilai kehidupan. ‘Ars longa, vita brevis.’ Perjalanan hidup kita tak akan pernah cukup untuk memahami apa yang sempurna yang diwariskan setiap pencapaian yang sesungguhnya kita, manusia, mampu ciptakan. Setiap hasil keterampilan, kemampuan, daya pikir, yang dihasilkan oleh manusia tak akan pernah cukup untuk bisa dipahami sepenuhnya dalam batas-batas waktu hidup manusia itu sendiri. Apa yang kita anggap ‘yang lama’ pada kenyataanya selalu mampu menjadi ‘yang baru’ ketika kita diberi kesempatan untuk memiliki kepekaan meraih pelajaran baru darinya. Dengan demikian setiap yang kita ciptakan, pada kenyataannya, adalah jejak resonansi dari bentuk-bentuk dan tingkat-tingkat penciptaan yang lain. Setiap manusia, seperti halnya juga para seniman, tak pernah bisa menjadi asal dari sebuah proses penciptaan selain justru menjadi bagian dari sumber dan muasal proses kerativitas lain yang tak bisa langsung dikenal atau dipahami oleh setiap orang. Dalam hal ini, maka seorang seniman pada akhirnya akan menyadari ihwal adanya cakrawala langit-langit yang lain, yang lebih luas, di atas langit-langit proses kreasi yang digelutinya secara personal.
Pameran ini didedikasikan kepada setiap usaha dan kerja keras setiap pihak dalam rangka menghidupkan kembali kemampuan manusia saat kini agar tetap mampu belajar dari prestasi dan hasil-hasil pencapaian manusia di lain waktu, situasi, dan kesempatan. Karya-karya yang dipamerkan ini lebih mirip sebagai sebuah dialog atau interaksi antara situasi ‘yang lama’ dengan ‘yang baru’, ‘yang lalu’ dengan ‘yang kini’, ‘yang saat kini’ dengan ‘yang kemudian nanti’. Ekspresi karya-karya yang dipamerkan ini hanyalah sebuah contoh dari kehendak dan ketulusan untuk terus belajar dan memahami, mengenang setiap apa yang kita tahu sebagai hadiah pengetahuan justru karena kita akhirnya menjadi sadar pada hal ihwal yang lain yang belum lagi kita ketahui. Cakrawala keluasan dan ketinggian harkat kemanusiaan tak akan pernah cukup dihargai dalam kemasaan kalkulasi nalar dan perhitungan dari rencana-rencana, selain jadi berharga karena tetap dirawat dan dihidupkan dalam kepekaan dan kecerdasan hati.

It is not often that an artwork receives a ‘challenging’ opportunity as in our exhibition today. These works are presented in a location/site far removed from a space in a gallery or museum of art. Perhaps, this used to be a place of work, or a place where its daily activities had nothing to do with art expression. Today, the location shows a different side to its conditional identity. Whatever its past, the site is now presented as a condition with special values: despite its neglect, it strongly shows its historical charm and the powerful scent of time. The condition of this site, which we now use as an exhibition space, is both a challenge and an invitation—although people are certainly welcomes to disagree. The charm of history and the scent of time are so powerful that its character promises to provide a ‘novel’ situation for the rebirth of an idea, emerging out of artworks once considered as “completed” perhaps even by their own artists.
Each artist’s studio is certainly unlike the idea of space inside a museum or gallery, as envisioned by artists to display their works. As a place of artistic creation or production, an artist’s studio is usually shabbier and wilder, filled to the brim with trails of ideas, experimental conducts, or desires that cannot be fully transformed into a particular work. And yet, a presentation site inside an old building in Jakarta’s Old Town is a ‘different’ situation altogether. It is not a neutral and elegant presentation space like most gallery rooms, but neither is it a shabby but homely space of an artist’s studio. The presentation space in Jakarta’s Old Town persistently offers ideas, even taking each artwork back to its earlier situation, when it was still a work-in-progress under the artist’s hands. Works exhibited here, are not merely presentations, but a ‘new’ representation, a product of the artist’s own idea(s) intermingled with the situational value of the space itself.

the veil around our assumptions regarding ‘the old’ and ‘the new’. Although we may see the site as a worn-out room inside an old building, in practice, its spatial character and situational value is a ‘new’ reality, which can then be understood/regarded as a quality that can be added to each of the artworks exhibited here. All the preparations ahead of this exhibition never once attempted to make it into a neutral place like those found in galleries or museums. On the contrary, we try as much as possible to allow the site to be ‘as it is’. In addition, works presented here are those that have been completed or even shown in prior exhibitions by the artists, not specially-made pieces for such a unique place as this. In the development of art, we recognize a method of expression called ‘site specific project’ (i.e. an art expression done as a special project in reaction to, or based on, the specific situation of a specific exhibition space). However, our current exhibition is far from a ‘site specific project’. The few artists who made small adjustments to their works did so only for technical reasons regarding the display of works. This exhibition, like the exhibition space itself, seems to be preparing for the rebirth of the strengths in each exhibited works. The charm of history, the scent of time, the charisma exuding from this space—they are old elements made into new strengths that work to rejuvenate the artists’ ideas and creativity.
These exhibited works are certainly not intended to ‘decorate’ the space—at least, not ‘decorate’ in the sense of beautifying a place. The works on exhibit, for me, act as an example of how we will have the ability to articulate our appreciation of time’s wisdoms and life’s values. Ars longa, vita brevis. Our life’s journey will never be long enough for us to comprehend the perfect things bequeathed by the achievements that
we, as humans, can actually create. Not every achievement through human skills, abilities, and thoughts, can be fully understood within the human lifetime. What we consider as “old”, in reality, can always become “the new”, if only we are given the opportunity to have the kind of sensitivity needed to find new lessons from it. And so, every creative thing, in reality, comes from the resonance emitted by other creative levels and forms. Each person, including the artist, can never be the font/source of a creative process, but only a part of the source and beginning of other creative processes that are not immediately recognizable or understandable. In this case, an artist will finally realize that there are other horizons, wider than his or her own creative horizon.
This exhibition is dedicated to every effort and hard work that has gone into our attempts to rejuvenate our abilities, so we can continue to learn from the achievements made in another time, situation, and opportunity. Works exhibited here are perhaps more like dialogs or interactions between “old” and “new” situations, “the past” and “the present”, “today” and “future” things. The expressions of works presented here serve as examples of the desire and heartfelt attempts to continue to learn and understand, to recall everything that we know as gifts of knowledge, especially because we have become conscious of things that we have yet to know. It is not enough to appreciate the length and breadth of human dignity through logical calculations or through the accounting of plans; instead, it becomes valuable and priceless because it has been nurtured and kept alive through sensitivity and an intelligent heart.

“The notion of a new language always develops with time from its infancy towardsmaturity, in Indonesia there has been a development towards modernity”This art installation is a representation of a stage of transformation between infancyand maturity within the contemporary Indonesian design world. There has been asurge of modernism penetrating our lives. Influences have come from all parts of theworld which indirectly shape the notion of modern design within the local society.Chrysalis is a development of understanding towards modernism within Indonesia.Its shape conceived from a frozen movement of an organism blossoming towards adirection yet to be known.Made out of Rattan, a material that is common towards the local eyes but haven’tsecured its proper respect, the installation is mounted on top of a stage to berepresented as work-in-process and also a milestone for this development ofunderstanding towards what modern contemporary Indonesian deign can be in thenear future.

Andre Tanama is one of young Indonesian visual artist. While being active as fine art
lecture in Institut Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta (Indonesia Institute of the Arts), he is also
being active creating visual artworks in various media such as drawing, printmaking,
painting, and sculpture. This time, he focus on exploring his “lovely” figures: Wayang
Monyong, Gwen Silent, and Agathos as metaphor of many issues. He brings his figures in many exhibitions in Indonesia
and other countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, Italy, Switzerland, USA,

Berawal dari kutipan “Mulutmu harimau-mu”, dalam karya ini sosok seekor banteng dan tanduknya dipilih sebagai metafora sebuah tindakan, sesuatu yang lebih dari hanya sekedar salah kata. Serudukan tanduk adalah sebuah tindakan, sebuah jalan, sebuah target yang telah dipilih oleh seorang individu. Tanduknya adalah senjatanya, namun juga kelemahannya jika diangkat terlalu tinggi. Dia harus menjaga baik-baik arah tanduknya, karena dia sendiri adalah tanduknya.
