JULY 2014: Come January 2015, 10-year-old superclub Zouk Kuala Lumpur (Zouk KL) will relocate from its current site at Jalan Ampang as its lease expires on Dec 31 2014 to its new home at TREC (Taste, Relish Experience, Celebrate) – Malaysia’s first purpose-built urban lifestyle, entertainment destination – and Kuala Lumpur’s (KL) largest F&B enclave located along the bustling downtown Jalan Tun Razak.

With a built-up space of 60,000 sq ft, the new RM38 million (S$14.8m) nightspot is the most expensive club ever built in Malaysia, and it will be the beacon of KL’s entertainment. The new Zouk KL comprises five clubs; a VIP bar lounge; a member’s lounge; a café; and a rooftop deck overlooking the expansive views of the Royal Selangor Golf Club. Zouk KL will also offer a dedicated VIP concierge service.

TREC, where Zouk KL’s new home would be, is developed at an investment of RM323.6m (S$125.8m). Comprising five zones, TREC lifestyle and entertainment hub sits on a 7-acre site situated directly opposite the upcoming Tun Razak Exchange (TRX) – the new financial hub of Kuala Lumpur – on land owned by the Royal Selangor Golf Club.

The five zones of TREC, each featuring a unique theme, will offer casual and fine dining, indie cafes, wine bars, pubs and lounges, with the aim of attracting a diverse demographic of tourists and locals.

In January 2015, TREC will see the relocation of Zouk KL –currently ranked No. 52 in the world by UK music/club magazine DJ Mag.

Electric Boulevard, one of TREC’s five zones, will be completed in the first quarter of 2015. Phase 2, which will be the completion of the remaining four zones – Alcove, The Terraces, The Hive and Rhapsody Square & Quad – is slated for the third quarter of 2015.

TREC is the brainchild of Cher Ng, co-founder and

executive director of Zouk KL. The idea of TREC came about by virtue of Zouk KL’s plan to relocate two years ago. TREC is a joint venture between Ng, Malaysian entrepreneur Dato’ Douglas Cheng and public-listed Berjaya Assets Berhad.

Ng, 42, started his career in Singapore as a DJ with Zouk Singapore club in the 1990s. He co-organised the ZoukOut music festival (2000 & 2001) before establishing Zouk KL in 2004.

Says Ng: “TREC will usher an exciting era for the city’s entertainment. Kuala Lumpur has also not seen any large-scale integrated entertainment developments in recent times – an area where we are falling behind our ASEAN neighbours. TREC will provide a safe, integrated entertainment destination for locals and a focal point for tourists in Malaysia.”

He adds: “As an important development in KL, TREC will also create over 1,500 jobs and we estimate the development will add RM140m (S$54.4m) to the local economy annually.”

As Malaysia’s first purpose-built urban F&B destination, TREC will pioneer the one-stop integrated entertainment district to the likes of Hong Kong’s Lan Kwai Fong, Shanghai’s Xin Tian Di and Singapore’s Clarke Quay – must-visit locations in their respective countries. TREC is expected to attract over 1.7 million visitors in its first year, of which up to 25 per cent would be foreign visitors.

TREC will feature front row views overlooking the spectacular greens of the sprawling Royal Selangor Golf Course, providing visitors an unrivalled entertainment within KL’s Golden Triangle – the leisure and entertainment district of the Malaysian capital. TREC boasts over 260,000 sq ft of lettable space, with a total of 77 units ranging from 400 sq ft to 5,000 sq ft.

The development is designed by award-winning architecture firms Veritas (Phase 1) and Unit One (Phase 2).

CHER NGNg is the founder of TREC, Malaysia’s first purpose-built lifestyle and entertainment des-tination – and KL’s largest entertainment and F&B development – located along Jalan Tun Razak. Working alongside Dato Douglas Cheng and Berjaya Assets, the Singaporean spearheads the consortium presiding over TREC’s development. Ng is responsible for TREC’s concept, partnership & funding, design & planning, construction, leasing, market-ing strategy as well as maintenance & property management. In March 2014, Ng led a successful campaign that saw TREC designated as one of the nation’s National Key Eco-nomic Area (NKEA) project under the EPP 8 programme. A prominent figure in Singapore and Malaysia’s entertainment scene, the 42-year-old is best known as the man behind Zouk KL, Malaysia’s first superclub. In 2003, Ng oversaw the development of the RM16m (S$6.2m) entertainment complex at Jalan Ampang that has hosted KL’s most memorable parties as well as a stellar line-up of global acts in the last decade. Under his steward-ship, the 32,000 sq ft Zouk KL went on to establish itself as Malaysia’s most successful nightspot, earning the endorsement from the Ministry of Tourism as a designated enter-tainment zone under the NKEA EPP 8 program – the first for an entertainment outlet in Malaysia. Zouk KL, a global brand, is currently ranked No. 52 in the Top 100 Clubs by cult UK club magazine DJ Mag. Ng’s early career saw him organising several large-scale outdoor events in Singapore and KL. Notably, ZoukOut – where the-then former Zouk DJ collaborated with Zouk Singapore for its 2000 and 2001 editions that has become the most successful music festival in Southeast Asia, drawing over 40,000 revellers.
