DANIELLE ONIONS

“The honors program is about so much more than courses. My honors advisor pushed me to consider my passions, my goals, and my experience, which led to an internship on Capitol Hill. It was the best, most exciting time of my college career.”

Study Abroad

About 60 percent of honors students choose to study abroad. KU has one of the top-ranked study abroad programs in the nation, offering opportunities in more than 75 countries. Students across disciplines can study abroad during winter, spring, and summer breaks, for a semester, or for an entire year. The University Honors Program offers special study abroad opportunities in places like Great Britain and Costa Rica and provides a variety of funding sources for its students.

The University

The University of Kansas is a major educational and research institution. Getting Into the Program

The deadline for admission is Nov. 1. Admission is highly selective. Although average scores of honors students are high, their ACT, SAT, or GPA scores do not guarantee admission to the University Honors Program. Applications are holistically evaluated on five criteria: curriculum, grades, standardized test scores, activities, and essay. Students should apply to the University Honors Program through the general admission application at admissions.ku.edu. Students not initially admitted may reapply after their first semester by going to honors.ku.edu.

Nunemaker Center

Nunemaker Center is the home away from home for many honors students. The center sponsors an annual interdisciplinary lecture series, houses honors staff offices, and boasts technology resources, student artwork, a study lounge, a kitchen, meeting areas, classrooms, and a reference/reading area.

Honors Housing

Honors students enjoy comfortable and enriching living environments in which faculty-student interaction is emphasized. Templin hall, near Nunemaker Center, offers honors floors, and several residence halls have communities of students with special interests such as engineering and the creative arts. The scholarship halls, another great KU tradition, also foster academic achievement and leadership.

KU IS RANKED SECOND among the top 50 public universities for the combined quality of honors benefits.

HONORS ADVISING also helps students to explore their disciplines beyond the classroom — through research, internships, study abroad, and more.

Honors Courses

The University Honors Program offers a tremendous array of honors courses in a wide variety of fields and interdisciplinary topic areas. These small, seminar-style courses are taught by top faculty and challenge students to critically evaluate and articulate information, further understand discipline-specific knowledge and methodologies, and pursue opportunities beyond the classroom.

Research

Honors students are encouraged to engage in research as soon as they begin at the University of Kansas. The university administers a variety of undergraduate research funds and grants many research awards each year. Students are challenged to present their research findings at the annual Undergraduate Research Symposium, to present their research at professional conferences, and to publish their work.

Advising

From day one, students meet with top faculty and honors staff and work closely with those mentors throughout their KU experience. Each student receives the highest quality, most individualized advising possible. Honors advisors help students identify opportunities outside the classroom such as research, study abroad, or internships and potential funding through the University Honors Program, the university, and a variety of national and international organizations.

NATALIE SCOTT

“The honors program has been the backbone of my education. It makes the university feel like home. The staff invests in each and every student and exposes them to opportunities that can’t be found anywhere else.”

“Without the KU honors program, I might have never had the incredible opportunity to travel to Switzerland for a truly international research experience at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. The honors program gave me the financial support, advising, and connections I needed to make this dream come true.”

RODI TORRES-GAVOSTO

“My work in labs has led to competitive summer internships and scholarships and has given me a head start in my career path. At KU, I am able to work on my own project and actually advance scientific knowledge.”

The University Honors Program offers superb advising, challenging

courses, and a variety of research, study abroad, and internship opportunities to

enhance the educational experience of talented, motivated students. The program

enrolls about 1,300 students, offers 75 courses each semester in more than 30 fields

of study, and includes students from all academic disciplines.
