Listen to a radio programme in which Rita McMahon, the director of the Wild Bird

Fund in the United States explains how to help an injured bird.

Good morning, everyone. Many of our listeners have noted that during the autumn migration

season a lot of birds are injured when they fly into closed windows. If you come across a bird

that is lying sideways on the ground, prod the bird’s legs: if they move freely, there’s a

chance of revival.

Keep the bird warm. The average body temperature of many migration birds in flight is 40

degrees, but they can end up concussed on a cold pavement where the temperature can be 20

or 15 degrees. They’d be in shock and the pavement leaches out their body temperatures.

You could put the bird in your pocket to warm it up. Don’t worry about disease. Generally

people can’t catch avian diseases. However, it is always safer to wash your hands after

handling a bird, and should you find a dead bird, dispose of the body using rubber gloves or a

plastic bag.

You could also place the injured bird in a little box or paper bag. When birds are placed in a

quiet, dark spot, they rest. A brown paper bag makes the perfect bird ambulance. Let the bird

rest for an hour. If, after that, the bird is fluffed up and has its beak tucked under a wing, it is

still trying to get warm.

Wait until it becomes alert, then take it to a park with a water source and let it go. Don’t

throw the bird in the air. Just let him leave.

If you follow these steps there’s a 50 percent chance you can save the bird. You should also

report the details on D-Bird.org, a database that tracks the location and frequency of window

strikes. They use the information to lobby for bird-friendly building design.

A third of all North American bird populations are at risk of becoming extinct. The New

York City Council estimates that 200,000 migration birds die each year from window strikes

in the city. New York is an ancient migration route, and we built this city in their way. We’re

a real obstacle course for birds.

The memorial celebration was held in the great hall of the Natural History Museum in

London on a hot evening in June 1995. More than a thousand people, public and guests, Trust

members and fans, came to rejoice and give thanks for the life and work of Gerald Durrell.

The queue stretched up Exhibition Road and past the Science Museum, and the audience was

packed round the great dinosaur skeleton in the hall and on the galleries above.

Arranged and directed by one of Gerald’s closest friends at the Trust, the celebration

encompassed his entire life and work. There were speeches and photographs and clips of his

films on a giant screen and readings from his writings and renderings of songs and music from

Noel Coward and the Cameroons. Sir David Attenborough spoke of the Durrell magic that had

touched so many people’s lives on a personal level because he was a crusader. Gerald had

been a man before his time, he said, who had harboured a dream of owning a zoo – a special

zoo whose main role was the survival of species. Princess Anne read out the message Gerald

had addressed to future generations, encouraging them to treasure and honour the natural

world and to cherish the earth’s diversity of species – a message she herself had buried in the

time capsule in the zoo grounds. The voices and the music echoed among the arches and

cloisters and then died. Gerald had been given a big goodbye, and it was over.

Or was it? One morning in the early spring following Gerald’s death I had walked with

Lee, his widow, through the grounds of the zoo he had founded on a wing and a prayer all

those years ago. It was a beautiful morning. The zoo was a haven of peace, its leafy

tranquillity only broken by an occasional heart-arresting jungle shriek from the lemurs as they

defended their territory.

I was new to this world then. Everywhere I looked I observed seemingly contented

animals play. Only the female snow leopard looked grumpy. ‘It takes ten dumb animals to

make a fur coat,’ read the placard outside the creature’s enclosure, indicating the cause of its

endangered status, ‘but only one to wear it.’

I came to the enclosure for the lowland gorillas. The females and children were sitting

quietly together. The alpha male of the Jersey gorillas – the next big breeder – was pointed out

to me.

We passed another enclosure, and Lee called out as a keeper emerged from it.

“How’d it go?”

“Like a dream,” came the man’s enthusiastic reply. “She went into labour in the middle

of the night. Absolutely no problem. A perfect delivery. Piece of cake.”

“What did she have?” asked Lee.

“A boy and a girl,” replied the keeper, unable to conceal his joy and pride, adding

mysteriously and alarmingly, “with perfect markings.”

Perfect markings? I had assumed the keeper had been talking about his wife and was

delighting in the birth of twins, but I had a problem picturing them the way he had described

them.

“That was the spectacled-bear keeper,” Lee explained. “One of the bears has just had

babies.”

The birth of two offspring from an endangered species was reason enough for rejoicing.

It was what Jersey Zoo and Trust were all about. Gerald Durrell the man was no more but his

work lived on, and the reason for it – the embattled kingdom of living things – remained. And

he had left behind an organisation and a team which continues to raise funds and is as

dedicated to the cause as he. There is no doubt that Gerald Durrell’s spirit lives on – in his

books, in his zoo, in his ongoing mission, in the natural world he has left behind.
