Term 2 | Issue 2 | Date: 28th April 2017
Welcome back to the start of the new term. I hope that you had a good, and restful break in preparation for the demands of Term 2. This term is always incredibly busy, culminating in semester exams, and the demands of all the learning tasks' just to name a few.
Student Leadership and Student Voice are vitally important in a successful school. Earlier this week, at a whole school assembly, I congratulated all of our students as they formally received their leadership badges in their nominated areas. Our School, Year Level, Learning Area and House Captains are an integral part of the success of this school. I am incredibly proud of the students for their willingness to accept their nomination, and their willingness to begin their work as one of our leaders.
Congratulations to our students, I look forward to working with all of them in 2017.

A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL ANZAC DAY
Meeting one of our College Captains, Ms. Gemma Stemp, in the early hours of Tuesday morning threatened to be a very wet experience. The crowd grew slowly as the rain became heavier, and most of the crowd was hiding under umbrellas. It was a credit to the families of Melton to come out in such large numbers on such a terribly wet morning. As luck would have it, the rain stopped completely at 5.55am, minutes before the service started, allowing the umbrellas to be put away, giving everyone a much better view of the ceremony.
The crowd was several thousand strong, supported by most of the local schools. Gemma did an outstanding job for Kurunjang, looking immaculate in her College blazer and uniform, and acting very maturely whilst placing our wreath on the Cenotaph. She was a role model to the many younger Primary School students in attendance. Thank you to Gemma, and the many other school families who supported Kurunjang Secondary College during this year?s ceremony.

On the 31st March, Mary Catherine Swanston the founder of AVID, came to the college to see our AVID program in action. She visited a number of classes and was very impressed to see how AVID strategies are being used across the college, and not only in AVID classes. When she noticed that students in the AVID classes enjoyed what they were learning, she was thrilled. The students were also given an opportunity to ask Mary Catherine questions. She was pleasantly surprised at the level of depth some of these questions had.
Later in the day, we held a lunch for our AVID visitors and Mary Catherine mentioned how proud she was of what AVID has become. AVID was created in America to help just one class "catch up" to other classes' work standards. AVID has now spread across the globe including Australia. Mary Catherine just couldn't believe how successful it has become.

MATHS QUIZ ANSWER
Pizza + donut + Pizza ? donut = $11 + $10.50
Pizza + Pizza = $21.50
So one pizza must cost half of $21.50 = $10.75, therefore a donut must cost $0.25

What is one of your hidden t alent s?
My hidden talent is that I make great sausage rolls! I regularly make them for the workers and volunteers at the Shrine of Remembrance. I just haven?t got myself around to make any for the staff at KSC.
What m akes a ?great ? day at school?
The smiling faces that greet me at Home Group in the morning. Also, having a number of lessons where students are enthusiastic and engaged are also great. What really makes it a great day is when students show an active interest and want to talk to me more about what is being taught in class ? especially after class or when I see them in the yard.
Your dream vacat ion would be?
Enjoying the gastronomical delights of France. Great food, great people, great place!
What inspires you?
People with passion, idealism and enthusiasm who want to make a difference to our society. Some well known people include ? Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jnr, Gough Whitlam, Bob Brown; but also our local community leaders, who may not be that well known (or acknowledged). Our local leaders and individuals are the ones who get out and about and work with others to make a difference. I think life is about making a difference and having an impact and; I hope I can follow their footsteps and make a difference too.
What would st udent s be surpr ised t o f ind out about you?
That I am also a student! I have to hand in assignments, write essays, complete tests and exams ? just like my students. I am currently completing my fourth degree ? a Graduate Certificate in World Historical Studies. By the end of this semester, I will be halfway through it. If you could pass on any w isdom t o your st udent s, what would you share?
Knowledge itself is power (ipsa scientia potestas est) ? Francis Bacon (1597)
The best t h ing about being a t eacher at t he College?
This is my fifth year at our college and, even though I do not live in the area, I think being welcomed, and becoming a part of our local Melton community is an awesome thing.
What is your favor it e subject t o t each?
I think the most obvious answer is History.
The National Assessment Program ? Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) 2017 for Years 7 and 9 students will be on Tuesday 09 May, Wednesday 10 May, and Thursday 11 May 2017. NAPLAN tests assess student knowledge and skills in Writing, Reading, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar, and punctuation), and Numeracy.
The results of the tests provide information for students, parents, teachers, and principals, which can be used to improve student achievement.
Exemptions may be granted to students with significant intellectual disabilit ies and to students who have been learning English for less than one year. If your child is eligible for support due to disability or an exemption, you should discuss this with me prior to the tests. Parental consent is required before any support due to disability or exemption is granted.
Students may be withdrawn from NAPLAN by their parent or carer. This is a matter for consideration by parents and carers in consultation with me. If, after consultation, you decide to withdraw your child, you must sign a Student Withdrawal form. These forms are available from me. I am confident that the information you receive because of your child?s participation in the NAPLAN tests will be valuable in helping you to assess your child?s progress in literacy and numeracy.
Yours sincerely

In our efforts to always improve what we do, the Learning Area Teams will shortly be undertaking a review of the curriculum work so far completed over first term, particularly with respect to some of our more recent college initiatives. In 2017, for example, we have
seen the introduction of Learning Tasks to replace the previously entitled Common Assessment Tasks. As educators, we know that for assessment to become truly meaningful, students need to participate in monitoring and reflecting upon their learning ? through a
range of assessment processes and tools - in order to identify areas for improvement. Henceforth, our teams will be examining how assessment, both from the students and the teachers, has led to improvement in classroom learning in order to review and develop
our courses of instruction.
