DEVILLED PORK CHOPS • 4 medium size pork chops • 4 oz canna butter • 2 small onions, chopped • 1 teaspoon flour • 2 tablespoons ketchup • 8 cups of chicken stock • ½ green, scotch bonnet pepper, sliced • ½ teaspoon all spice • ½ pint water • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce • salt to taste

METHODTrim the pork chops and lightly brown them in canola or light oil. Remove for heat and brown onions in same oil. Stir in flour, cook stirring until golden brown. Remove from heat. Gradu-ally add water, pepper, all spice, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, ½ canna butter, ketchup and salt to taste. Place pork chop in the sauce and gently simmer on low for 20 minutes or until tender. Add remaining canna butter and mix and serve.

ROASTED CHICKEN WITH CANNA RICE AND PEAS • 3 cups of rice (instant) • 1 cup of pease or beans of your choice • 12 oz of canna coconut milk • 3 teaspoons canna butter • 3 sprigs of thyme • 3 teaspoons garlic • 2 stalks green onions • ½ cup fresh corn (roasted optional) • ¼ teaspoon black pepper and salt

CANNA COCONUT MILKMake canna coconut milk by adding 1/8 oz of cannabis to coconut milk and let stand in refrigerator for 2 days shaking twice a day. Strain cannabis and coconut milk is ready for use.

METHODAdd all ingenious in your normal rice and water and cook as instructed. Once rice is ready add canna butter and stir. Top with Chicken as an option.

CANNA BANANA SURPRISE • 6 ripe bananas • 2 oz canna butter • 2 oz brown sugar • 5 teaspoons dark rum • Grated rind of ½ a lemon • vanilla ice cream

METHODPeel the bananas and s lice slantwise. Place in a shallow oven proof dish; sprinkle a little brown sugar between the layers of bananas. Melt canna butter and remaining brown sugar together, beat in rum and lemon rind, spread on top of bananas. Bake in oven at 275 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes, spoon on ice cream while hot and enjoy.

ithin a few weeks we will be celebrating the 4th of July. For many of us, this is merely a day to gather with friends and family for a day or rest, relaxation, BBQs, picnics, sporting events, adventure or just plain fun. But we must remember the real reason we are celebrating. It is the acknowledgment that we are an independent and free nation of people. However, with freedoms come restrictions.

Our elected representatives masque restrictions as something that is for the greater good of the people. However, lately, we have witnessed the overreaching laws that are affecting the medical marijuana community in Colorado and other states in our country. While most of us will agree that there need to be regulations in this industry, the 78 page mega piece of legislation, HB 10-1284 goes overboard with medical marijuana directives to caregivers, growers, store owners, edible companies and anyone involved in the industry. Unfortunately, more focus is placed on restricting the medical marijuana provider than affording safe access for medical marijuana patients to get their medication.

In November 2000, voters in Colorado passed Amendment 20 to the state constitution. Almost, 10 years later, legislation addressing the growing and dispensing of medical marijuana is close to being signed into law by Governor Bill Ritter (as of presstime HB 10-1284 has not been signed). Many see this proposed law as a step backwards from the intent of the voters who passed Amendment 20. Others see it as a much needed set of rules to stop the rampant proliferation of medical marijuana dispensaries opening in their cities and neighborhoods. Unfortunately, the overbearing restrictions imposed by HB 10-1284, and its many ambiguities, will open the floodgates of litigation and future legislation.

So the real question is, are we truly the land of the free? Seek out and support the non-profit entities that are pioneering the efforts in Colorado and nationwide for medical marijuana patient’s rights. I have been a skier my whole life and feel like I can hang with just about any level buddy, though I now prefer to stick to scenic blues rather than seek out the moguls and trees. I did all of those dare devilish things for years and loved every minute of it, but as one ages, skiing becomes as much a relaxation exercise as a physical one. I’m in my mid-30s and love to ski, swim, hike and play beer league softball. I’m always up to try something new. This past winter, I tried something all right. I tried snowboarding.

So my friend, whom we will call Karen, because that is her name, is from Texas. She’s been around the globe and on many occasions we have talked about skiing together. In January, Karen agreed that we should make good on our promise and have a ski weekend. She would fly out, stay a long weekend and we would hit 3 different hills. Between the phone calls and emails and her actual arrival, something happened. Karen watched the Olympics and became a Shaun White disciple. (I don’t know why I didn’t see this coming, considering that every Facebook update on her page had a Photoshopped picture of her doing some mad snowboarding trick.) As a “hostess” gift, Karen decided that on day one, she would pay for an hour snowboarding lesson. I thought, “great!” There are a few things I love about the sport. I’m not a hater like many diehard skiers are. I love the boots. They are so comfortable! You can walk through the lodge like a human instead of stomping about heel to toe like Frankenstein. I like the idea of less gear. One little board, a baggy coat, monster size gloves, a helmet and goggles and you’re off. Skiing, on the other hand, requires carrying a lot of crap around.

So there we are in our baggy coats and rentals, all fired up and ready for our lesson, which was so great that we decided to extend it an extra hour. Once I finally figured out how to get off the lift, the actual riding part was fairly easy for me. I have good natural balance, and I have of course watched boarders ride and carve for years. So I got the hang of it pretty darned well! In fact, and sorry Karen, but I was lapping my friend in runs and generally having a great time save for a few tough falls where I thought my wrists would snap. Picture it: It’s the last run of the day. I make 5 excellent turns and a few

shoddy ones, but beat Karen to the bottom by minutes, not seconds. SO I’m standing there on my snowboard, feeling very much a part of the cool club, waiting for slowpoke to make it down. And I fell. No, I didn’t just fall, I defied gravity. There is no logical reason why someone standing sideways can meet the ground with the serious velocity and force that I did that day. I fell so hard on my ass that I broke my tailbone. Last run, not boarding but standing—busted.

For those of you unfamiliar, and I hope you are because I don’t wish this injury on anyone, the coccyx, or tailbone, is the triangular bony structure located at the bottom of the vertebral column. It is composed of three to five bony segments held in place by joints and ligaments. When an injury occurs, the result is severe localized pain or tenderness to the area. Sitting for long periods of time make it feel worse. Here it is, June and I can tell you firsthand that the pain I feel daily, is excruciating. Driving is hard. Making a U-Turn is unfathomable. Driving down a road with potholes or ruts in the road is like being beaten up by a linebacker. The pain doesn’t go away. If I sit too long, it takes all of my upper body strength to stand. On a scale of 1-10, the pain is a 12.

There is no miracle cure for a tailbone injury. I have done what is mostly recommended. I bought one of those silly doughnuts that you sit on, and it helps occasionally. I do ice for 15 minutes at a time and take ibuprofen when the swelling gets out of control. But the only thing I can really do is wait. According to others who have suffered through this pain, it takes a year or two. A year? Or two? I knew I couldn’t live like this and maintain any semblance of sanity, and I hate taking pills of any kind, so I turned to medical marijuana to help ease my discomfort. I have found that with a regimen of yoga, acupuncture and cannabis, my day-to-day is a lot easier and on some days, I even feel like it’s healing a little. I hope you should never have to research at-home treatments for a broken tailbone, but know that medical marijuana has helped this ex-snowboarder tremendously and it beats the snowballs out of ibuprofen or worse, prescription pills.

FRESH AND TASTYBROCCOLI SALADINGREDIENTS2 heads fresh broccoli 1 red onion 1/2 pound bacon 3/4 cup raisins 3/4 cup sliced almonds 1 cup mayonnaise 1/3 cup THC olive oil1/2 cup white sugar 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar

DIRECTIONSPlace bacon in a deep skillet and cook over medium high heat until evenly brown. Cool and crumble. Cut the broccoli into bite-size pieces and cut the onion into thin bite-size slices. Combine with the bacon, raisins, your favorite nuts and mix well. To prepare the dressing, mix the mayonnaise, THC olive oil, sugar and vinegar together until smooth. Stir into the salad, let chill and serve

GREENBEAN AND PECAN SALADINGREDIENTSFor the pecans: 2 tablespoons corn oil 2 cups shelled pecan halvesLemon Vinaigrette:1/2 cup lemon juice, freshly squeezed (2 to 3 whole lemons) 1-1/2 teaspoons sugar 1-1/2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 1 cup grape seed oil 1/3 cup THC olive oil salt & pepper to taste 2 pounds green beans

DIRECTIONSHeat peanut oil over medium heat. Add pecans and salt to taste. Toast lightly, stirring constantly. (Nuts cook quickly, be careful not to burn them.)Whisk lemon juice, sugar, and mustard together, then slowly drizzle in grape seed and THC olive oil until emulsified. Add salt and pepper to taste. (Or, use a hand-blender to make the whole thing go quicker and emulsify better.)Trim beans and cut into 3 inch lengths. Place in a microwavable serving bowl and cover with plastic wrap, leaving a slight space for steam to escape. Steam until crisply tender. (You may also use a regular steamer.) Rinse with water to arrest the cooking process. Drain thoroughly.Lightly coat the beans with the dressing, adding only as much dressing as you need, and toss in the nuts. Adjust the salt and pepper. Serve at room temperature.

HERBS HERO SANDWICHINGREDIENTS1/2 cup THC olive oil 1 tablespoon lemon juice 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar 3 cloves garlic, minced

2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley 2 teaspoons dried oregano 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 1 cup black olives, chopped 1 cup mushrooms, chopped 1 (1 pound) loaf round, crusty Italian bread 1/2 pound sliced deli smoked turkey meat 1/2 pound sliced Italian ham 1/4 pound sliced salami 1/2 pound sliced mozzarella cheese 6 leaves lettuce 1 tomato, sliced

DIRECTIONSIn a medium bowl, combine THC olive oil, lemon juice, vinegar and garlic. Season with parsley, oregano and pepper. stir in olives and mushrooms. Set aside. Cut off top half of the bread. Scoop out the inside, and leave a 1/2 inch outside wall. Spoon 2/3 of the olive mixture into the bottom. Layer with turkey, ham, salami, mozzarella, lettuce and tomato. Pour remaining olive mixture on top, and replace the top half of bread. Wrap securely in plastic wrap, and refrigerate overnight.

GRILLED SHRIMP AND TEQUILA SALSAINGREDIENTS 1 cup chopped red onion 1/4 cup green bell pepper, chopped 1/4 cup red bell pepper, chopped 1/4 cup yellow bell pepper 4 cups tomatoes, chopped 1/4 cup jalapeno peppers, seeded and chopped 1/4 cup garlic, minced 1/4 cup lime juice 1/2 cup THC olive oil 1/4 cup tequila 1/4 cilantro, finely chopped 1 1/2 teaspoons oregano 1/4 cup white wine vinegar Salt and pepper to taste

Shrimp: 1 1/2 lb large shrimp, peeled and deveined 1/4 cup butter, melted 2 tablespoons garlic, minced 1 lemon juiced

DIRECTIONSIn a medium mixing bowl, whisk together lime juice; THC olive oil and tequila. Stir in all salsa ingredients to blend well, then set aside. Heat grill to medium high. Whisk together butter, garlic and lemon juice in a small pan over low heat until well blended. Place 4 shrimp on each skewer then brush with lemon mixture, and place shrimp on grill, basting with mixture. Grill each side 2-3 minutes. Remove from grill; stir salsa and drain any liquids. Set shrimp on plate with 1 cup salsa on the side. Garnish with twisted lime slices. Serve with crusty bread.

GRILLED PORTOBELLO MUSHROOM PIZZA FOR MY VEGGIE FRIENDS

INGREDIENTS 2 large Portobello caps, cleaned 4 tbsp THC olive oil 1 tsp of Italian seasoning 1 tsp of garlic powder 1 tsp salt 1 tsp fresh black pepper Crushed red pepper, optional 2 tbsp of marinara sauce 2-3 tbsp shredded mozzarella

DIRECTIONSPreheat Your grill. Place Portobello caps, gill side up, on a foil lined baking sheet. Drizzle each with a small amount of THC olive oil and spread around with your fingers or the back side of a small spoon. Next, sprinkle on Italian seasoning, garlic

powder, salt and pepper. Add crushed red pepper to your liking of heat level. Place on the grill and roast for about 30 minutes or until fork tender. Remove mushrooms from grill and place a tablespoon of marinara on each and spread evenly. Top with mozzarella and place back in the grill on a top shelf until cheese begins to brown.

PEANUT BUTTERCHOCOLATE CAKEINGREDIENTS 3/4 cup sugar free chunky peanut butter Low fat chocolate cake mix2 tsp vanilla 1 tbsp sugar free caramel syrup 3 eggs 1 cup water 1/3 cup THC oil Frosting: 2 tbsp butter 3/4 cup no sugar chunky peanut butter, 4 tbsp skim milk 2 tbsp sugar free caramel syrup 1 tbsp vanilla 1 lb powdered sugar Peanuts to sprinkle on top, optional

DIRECTIONS Place peanut butter in a bowl, add THC oil and eggs then beat well. Add cake mix and water, beat well, then add flavorings and mix. Pour into sprayed cake pans, bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes, or until cake tests done. Let cool in pans for 10 minutes then place on racks to finish cooling. To prepare frosting, place all ingredients in a mixing bowl and beat until creamy and thick enough to spread on cooled cake.

STRAIN REVIEW:

They say that diamonds are forever. They can cut through steel, and every girl wants one on her finger. These are all very glamorous reputations, but with this strain it’s not so straightforward.

Taking a name like ‘Diamond Kush’, this strain of indica has a lot to live up to. But DK certainly didn’t last forever. With a strong buzz to start, it tapered off pretty fast, leaving us mentally and physically bored, wanting to smoke more to maintain the high. Don’t get us mixed up though, it’s a really nice high while it lasts... one of the better indicas around. It’s just really disappointing when it wears off. Something so good is hard to let slip away.

The situation is sort of like when a bride thinks she’s going to get a 5 carat diamond on her wedding day and only gets a 4.5 carat rock. 4.5 is still pretty legit and hard to complain about, but the expectation was set and not met. ‘Diamond Kush’ sets a pretty high expectation, almost meets it or does for a short period, and then leaves all the magic at the alter.

But Diamond Kush does have it’s place in your medicine cabinet. It’s always nice to have a variety available, and having a short term buzzer on hand can be a perfect fit for many situations. Say for example you only have a half hour before you need to drive somewhere, this strain will be mostly leveled off by then. And then when it does wear off, it’s actually a real nice state of equilibrium. DK should provide a nice balance to your creeper strains.

This particular batch of Diamand Kush wielded an intoxicatingly sweet smell, with a matching sweet taste that seemed a nice fit to it’s name. With a shimmery white coating of crystals, it looked like it had been rolled in sugar and then glazed. Very light and fluffy buds that seemed to smoke much faster than we had anticipated. A nice amount of orange hairs were also sprinkled amongst the snowy landscape to offer some color diversity.

Overall, Diamond Kush offers a pleasantly strong indica high that doesn’t take long to smoke and doesn’t take long to peak. The smell, taste, and other physical characteristics are all very enticing, but they don’t last for long. The price should average around $60/eighth, which usually lands the on the higher end of the price scale.

Is it worth it? We’ll probably go for a cheaper, longer lasting strain next time. DK is a very nice experience,

but with so many great strains out there it’s good to keep

shopping around.

LAWYERS COME TOGETHER TO FIGHT MMJ REGULATION

met in Denver last month to address the concerns aaasurrounding the medical marijuana legislation

in Colorado, and many of the attorneys are planning on filing lawsuits against the state.

Ten lawyers met with more than 200 concerned cannabis proponents at the Lowes Hotel in Denver on May 24, giving advice to medical marijuana patients, dispensaries and supporters on how to react to the new tight regulations that are set to squeeze the medical ganja industry.

The event was organized by Boulder-based Cannabis Therapy Institution, which invited lawyers from Denver, Boulder, Colorado Springs and Blackhawk to talk about what’s next.

Denver attorney Jessica Corry from Hoban and Feola, LLC, law firm was on the panel, as well as Colorado Springs criminal defense lawyer Clifton Black, who has spent much of his time in the last year defending marijuana growers.

Jessica Corry’s husband, attorney Rob Corry, told Kush Magazine that he will file a lawsuit against the legislation “as soon as it becomes law.” The lawyers wouldn’t specifically outline what their lawsuits will look like.

The law is set to take effect July 1.

Kush Magazine made several attempts to contact Governor Bill Ritter about HB 1284 and SB 109, but his communications director never returned phone calls.

“(The lawsuit) will be a constitutional challenge to both House Bill 1284 and Senate Bill 109. Many patients are going to be harmed by this piece of legislation. They’re already having enough trouble with access,” Corry said. “We’re going to get an injunction that would immediately stop the state.”

Attorney Clifton Black joined the panel discussion in Denver because he thinks that House Bill 1284 is “an absolute litigation breeder.”

Black has represented a number of marijuana proponents in Colorado Springs — a city that has roughly 100 dispensaries.

Both Black and the Corry’s said it’s not every day that a group of competing lawyers gather in public to talk about litigation, but because Colorado’s medical marijuana laws are set to change so drastically, the panel discussion was necessary.

“I think it’s fantastic that CTI brought legal minds together,” Black said, adding that it’s what marijuana supporters needed in order to be legally informed.

Black said several parts of the legislation warrant a class action lawsuit, including the piece that talks about having to be a Colorado resident for two years before opening a dispensary in the state.

“When you look at the residency requirement and the number of people it affects, it makes sense to have a class action lawsuit,” Black explained.

Rob Corry is still planning the next step with litigation.

“At this point we’re still trying to put together a coalition of plantiffs,” Corry said.

He also feels that the two year residency requirement is a bad piece of the legislation.

“Colorado’s economy is hurting and the medical marijuana industry is one of the positive things about our economy, and the government is trying to kill the golden goose so to speak, and we’re trying to save it,” Corry explained. “Hopefully we’ll get an immediate result. That said, it is an uphill battle to strike down a state statute. It’s a difficult mountain to climb, but it’s a mountain worth climbing and we’re going to try our best.”

It all started in 1973 when Tom Moffatt, concert promoter

extraordinaire, who has staged some of the biggest acts in

the show business from Elvis Presley to Elton John, Nureyev

to the Harlem Globetrotters, Sinatra to the Rolling Stones,

commissioned the Lach brothers to craft 250 ceramic gold

plated mugs to give out as his Christmas presents. Steve

Lach aka DaPiper, the owner of Celebration Pipes tells Kush

what happened next. “I was living in Carmel, California at

the time when I got the call, that Moffatt wanted us to make

the mugs. I flew over to Hawaii, and was told that we had

the order, but that Tom wanted everything made in Hawaii.

Since Tom wasn’t the kind of guy you said no to, and it was

a tropical island that he was demanding, not some freezing

tundra somewhere, I literally moved over to Maui within

days, to make the Christmas gifts. While we were making

the stocking stuffers, we decided to use a little of the extra

gold we had and constructed our first Lavastoneware piece,

which we then happily passed around at the Sunshine

Festival inside Diamondhead Crater on New Years Day.

As chance would have it a new magazine was about to

hit the streets that would set the course for Celebrity for the

next couple of decades. If you guessed correctly you know

that the new magazine was High Times.

And from there Celebration Pipes has never looked

back. From one tiny ad in the first High Times Magazine,

DaPiper and crew received over 250 pipe orders in the spring

of 1974. After that the Celebration pieces started showing

up regularly in green rooms at major concerts including

the likes of Aerosmith, Willie Nelson, and Loggins and

Messina. In hindsight maybe Lach should have called the

company Celebrity Pipes.

Lach an original founder of NORML in Hawaii in

the 70s is still is involved with NORML today and

donates to NORML fundraisers regularly, by

contributing various Celebration pieces to

the organiztion.

Celebration Pipes are really second to none. Each

WOMEN ACROSS THE NATION ARE TAKING HEED to what marijuana means to them, forming a new group that focuses on the calming affects of cannabis and how it can decrease domestic violence, which is often a result of alcohol abuse.

The group — Women’s Marijuana Movement — made its debut in Denver last month and was formed under the popular Colorado non-profit organization called Safer Alternative For Enjoyable Recreation (SAFER).

“It’s not a war against alcohol. We’re just saying give us and give our children a safer alternative,” said marijuana activist Crystal Guess. “Women sort of put a flower on everything. There’s something about putting women in front of something that makes it more attractive.”

On May 6, a cluster of women gathered at Colorado’s state capitol to tell lawmakers why marijuana should be legal and that it’s a healthier alternative to alcohol and other mind-altering drugs.

“There are a lot of women out there that are afraid of losing their children or their job if they admit to using marijuana. It’s always been sort of a male dominated topic of discussion,” said Guess, who recently moved from Virginia to Colorado to help SAFER and other cannabis organizations rally on behalf of marijuana.

“You don’t have to hold political office to have a voice,” Guess added.

Denver lawyer, mother and activist Jessica Corry is the co-founder of the Women’s Marijuana Movement. Although she’s not a marijuana user, she strongly believes that the current cannabis laws

are “unjust, irrational and detrimental to the health and well-being of our children.” Corry has a strong statement about the movement on the group’s website, www.womensmarijuanamovement.org.

She states that, “While members of this movement are unified in their belief that marijuana prohibition should end and marijuana regulation should begin, they approach the issue with their own opinions and perspectives. We have mothers, like me, who are thinking about the well-being of our children. We have young professionals who are tired of living in a society in which people are encouraged to drink alcohol, but are punished for using marijuana. We have patients and their family members who understand how marijuana can alleviate pain and suffering. And we have women who have witnessed or suffered from alcohol-related violence in their homes, on their campuses and in their communities. These women truly believe that making marijuana available as a legal alternative to alcohol could make our society a safer -- and all-around better -- place to live.”

Mason Tvert, executive director of SAFER, is also co-founder of the movement.

“We’re trying to provide women with the information they need to be more confident and comfortable about the positive use of marijuana,” Tvert told Kush Magazine. “We currently have a system that only allows people to use alcohol, which obviously contributes to domestic violence, sexual assault.”

Tvert’s goal in helping form the woman’s movement is to give woman, including mom’s, a platform to speak about their marijuana use without being ashamed or persecuted by society.

Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz team up for the first time since ‘Vanilla Sky’ for this action/comedy flick.

Diaz plays a normal woman who gets caught up with a dangerous, if not lighthearted spy played by Cruise. The two are thrown into wild and dangerous situations where they must work together despite Diaz’s complete lack of knowledge in the field. If you are a fan of movies like ‘True Lies’ or ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ this might be worth checking out.

Despicable Me is an animated family picture about Gru (played by Steve Carrell) a villain who plans to steal the moon. Gru leads an

army of cutesy little minions, and hopes to surpass his villain rival, Vector. One day Gru meets three orphan girls who want him to become their father and he must adjust to a new life.

This is sure to be a solid picture that you can take the whole family to enjoy; with morals and lessons wrapped in a slick 3D package.

The movie is set to come out on July 9.

Leonardo DiCaprio stars in this cerebral science fiction thriller from Christopher Nolan the director of Dark Knight, Insomnia and Momento.

DiCaprio plays a man who works for a company that infiltrates the human conscious as a person sleeps, while the mind is vulnerable. While there, he either retrieves secrets from that person’s mind or in the case of an inception, plants a new idea in the victim’s thoughts.

This movie hits theaters on July 16.

Fools are sure to be pitied in the remake of the popular 80s TV show ‘The A Team’. The new film is slated to be a much grittier

version of the original show, in order to be more in tune with today’s audience. That said people looking for a stroll down memory lane with their favorite characters are sure to get the occasional nod as well.

Bradley Cooper, Liam Neeson and Sharlto Copley are playing Face, Hannibal and Howling Mad respectively, with former UFC fighter Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson taking on the role of B.A. Baracus.

The film opened on June 11.

Five massive comedy names make up the cast in this summer comedy. As kids, the five main characters were good

friends and basketball team mates. When their former coach dies, the friends decide to get together with their families for a Fourth of July weekend.

Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade and Rob Schneider all star in the film alongside some other equally large names.

One thing is for sure, if the movie turns out half as good as it’s cast’s

credentials it’s sure to be a winner. It comes out on June 25.

The newest film vampire romance Twilight series is almost upon us.

Edward, Bella and Jacob are back in this third installment of the wildly popular Twilight series. In Eclipse, Bella the leading lady, finds herself in trouble. As it turns out, when you are in a tight spot, being pretty close with a vampire and a werewolf can be pretty handy.

Whether liquid or powder form, fertilizers act as a soil conditioner, which will improve plant growth and overall health. Which fertilizer should you use? That depends on many factors, such as soil condition, climate, the type of plant, and the water being used. Different EC values can have differing effects if dosages are miscalculated, possibly leading to over or under use of the fertilizer, leading to plant care complications. Although your plants will grow, get leafy, and bud, this over or under fertilization may cause a high salt content in the substrate. Ultimately this

could lead to an overdose of nutrients, causing mold in the flowering stage, reduced levels

of resistance against pests, lower yields, and possibly pose a health risk from radioactive traces in the your cannabis

(from phosphate).

Choosing the proper fertilizer for your particular growth is

as essential as choosing which type of seed you’re starting

with, where you’re growing it, and how much light and

water they’ll receive. Fully understanding fertilizer’s proper

use (and how much of it to use) may be half the battle in

your pursuit of a fruitful yield.

nutrients or fertilizer depends on the size of the plant, the pot it’s in, and the condition of the soil. Always

add water when you add any nutrients or fertilizer to the soil. We recommend that you dissolve

the fertilizer in the water before watering the plant. Foliar feeding, or spraying the leaves with a fertilizer solution is an ideal

way of fertilizing large plants with nutrient deficiencies.

Fertilizing properly can make or break your growth, so don’t take it lightly. Something that seems so simple can potentially send your plants into a botany nightmare. Like most things, if you seek

out expert advice, give some TLC, and keep things simple, you should be successful.

Car: 1968 Ford Mustang GT FastbackMovie: Bullitt Driver: Frank Bullitt

‘Bullitt’ doesn’t have a reputation for being a movie with a great story, what it has though is what is widely considered to be one of the greatest car chases in movie history.

Frank Bullitt is a police lieutenant who is ordered to protect an informant. The informant is set to testify against a well known mobster. Things go wrong and there is copious gunfire, as per the usual mobster/detective thriller, but the real fun comes as McQueen’s green Mustang fastback comes head to head with a pair of bad guys who are armed with a shotgun and a Dodge Charger R/T.

The chase gets off to a semi-slow start but in an instant, two of the greatest examples of American muscle cars are flying through the hills and streets of San Francisco.

In modern films, the sound of the engine and the speed of the car are masked by loud music, and quick cut editing. Bullitt lets the cars shine as the stars that they are. No music can be found after the action starts, and in it’s place is nothing but hypnotic engine noise; the deep, powerful rhythmic growl of the Charger contrasts the high revving wail of Bullitt’s Mustang.

The two drivers battle it out like men who are fighting with everything they have. These are not flawless, pro racing drivers, they slam into guardrails, other cars and each other. You can feel the desperation of the drivers as they make their mistakes, and that is partly why we love it.

Up until last year, Ford included a special Bullitt edition Mustang for those who are still effected by the scenes in this 1968 classic. Such is the effect of this movie. (continued on page 56)

Car: Aston Martin DB5 Movies: Goldf inger, Thunderball, GoldenEye, The World is Not Enough, Casino Royale Driver: James Bond

The DB5’s svelte curves and flowing lines are enough to give this car legend status, but what sets the DB5 apart is it’s shared screen time with the world’s coolest spy; James Bond.

In GoldenEye, Pierce Brosnan’s 007 pilots the car around the European Alps, keeping pace with a beautiful woman in a more modern, and much faster Ferrari F355 GTS.

In the reboot of the series, Casino Royale, Daniel Craig wins the DB5 off of a villain in a poker game, which he then, in traditional 007 fashion, immediately uses to seduce the villain’s girl.

The DB5 will probably be best known for its role in the 1960’s classic, Goldfinger. In Q’s lair the audiences imagination is teased with wild technology like in-dash maps and tracking devices, machine guns behind the headlights, smoke screens and the infinitely cool passenger ejector seat.

Sean Connery puts the car through it’s paces battling Goldfinger’s henchmen later in the film. The pretty blonde gets killed and the car ends up trashed, but the scene cemented the Aston as one of the world’s coolest cars.

Car: Lamborghini Miura Movie: The Italian Job (Original) Driver: Roger Beckermann

Those of you who have seen this film may be a bit confused at this choice. The stars of the film, from an automotive standpoint, are undeniably the Minis that blast through Turin at the movie’s climax. The orange car at the beginning was only featured for a few minutes.

But oh, what a fantastic few minutes.

As the opening credits roll, the audience is treated to what amounts to many a car enthusiast’s wet dream. The Lamborghini is driven hard through the beautiful Italian Alps to the tune of Matt Monro’s ‘On Days Like These’.

The Lamborghini Miura is legend on it’s own. Many car nuts regard the Miura as the world’s first road going super car, and even more give it credit for Lamborghini’s success as a company.

The scene is a glimpse at the super car experience in the 60’s; A wealthy gentleman cooly tearing up asphalt in the Italian Alps. This scene exudes cool on the Miles Davis level. Right up until the Lamborghini slams into a tractor and is rolled off of a cliff by mobsters.

These scenes may have been filmed for the big screen, but you can relive them on your small one today. At the time of writing all of the scenes mentioned in this article are available online on YouTube. Check them out, or for the full experience, watch the full films themselves.

In 2009, 45 states reported “water stressed” conditions. Water conservation is something we should think about every day and now that summer is here, it’s more important than ever to save. It is essential to life on this planet that we protect our most important resource and simple changes you can make to our daily routines are an important contribution that we can’t afford not to make. Water conservation is free and easy. If you choose to put a little money into the effort, there are extremely inexpensive options that can save you in the long run. It’s always a good idea to check in and make sure we are doing all we can to keep our water clean and protect our precious resources.

#1 Washing machines and dishwashers use a lot of water and it is estimated that you can save 1,000 gallons a month by only doing full loads. If you hand wash dishes, make sure that you fill the sink rather than letting the water run as you wash.

#2 Limit showers to 5 minutes or less, suggests AmericanWater.com. Purchase a low-flow showerhead for better water savings. When bathing, fill the tub only 1/3 full instead of filling it to the top. You also can save water by not flushing the toilet every time it is used. Some people might cringe, but there really is no need to flush every time. The old standard, “If it’s yellow, it’s mellow. ... If it’s brown, flush it down” is a good gauge for determining how often to flush. Don’t allow water to gush from the faucet when shaving or brushing your teeth.

#3 When caring for your lawn, try to water in the morning or evening when evaporation is minimized. If you live in a climate where it rains in the summer, set out a few rain barrels and use the rainwater to water your lawn during dry spells. If you wash your dog, pick a spot in your yard that needs water. Consider planting ground cover that doesn’t need a lot of water. You can also have a plumber reroute your grey water to service your lawn if it’s allowed in your city. Make sure to monitor your sprinklers and hoses for cracks or leaks to avoid unwanted water loss.

#4 Wash your car at a carwash that uses recycled water. Washing your car at home once a week can waste as much as 500 gallons a month. If your driveway gets dirty or dusty, take the opportunity to get a little exercise and sweep the driveway.

#5 Low-flow aerators and showerheads can save as much as 150 gallons of water a day in an average household. They require no tools and can be purchased at any home improvement or hardware store. Tank banks are low cost, high efficiency options for the waste of water that toilets produce. You can essentially retrofit your home to save water for under $50.

Being raised in Los Angeles during the ‘70’s and ‘80’s, it was near impossible to turn on the radio and not hear a James Taylor or Carole King song. Their music spoke of the time, with Taylor’s East Coast memoirs, and travels South - while King’s music was the voice of the booming feminist movement, and inspiring activism everywhere. Although these songs weren’t written on the west coast, they always felt like California in a strange way. Coming to the Hollywood Bowl for three nights this past month as part of their Troubadour Reunion Tour (kicked off at the famous L.A. landmark in 2009) was validation of the California connection.

Putting two amazing artists together on one bill can be challenging at times. Often songs need to be omitted due to set lists, and time constraints. Choosing wisely to have no opener allowed for the JT/CK duo to share the stage from the start, and besides a fifteen minute set break, allowed them to cover most of their individual and collaborative hits with well over thirty songs. Being more familiar with JT, and having seen him in recent years, I had an idea about his concerts. They are compelling, thought provoking, and are heartwarming glimpses into one man’s life. They are amazing and true.

What was most shocking and fulfilling about this concert was the grab bag of hit songs that Carole King pulled from her repertoire. Not only did she play the songs I knew of, she busted out hits from the Motown era, standards from the ‘60‘s, and even a tune covered by the Beatles….. Wow, The Beatles!!! …..At one point when she told the story of the Fab Four covering the song “Chains” (my baby’s got me locked up in chains…), my jaw dropped in amazement when I realized she had actually written it. Who knew???

In 1960, King co-write her first hit “Will you Still Love Me Tomorrow?“ for the Shirelles, with husband Gerry Goffin, starting a very famous string of hits written at the Brill Building in New York. Many other artists like Neil Diamond were creating simultaneously with King in this very noted period.

Volleying hits back and forth, (shared or not) with JT was as comfortable as that old sweater on a rainy day. Carole at one point sidled up so close to James, lovingly putting her head on his shoulder as they sang her song, “You’ve Got A Friend”. It was almost as though they were cut from the same artistic cloth, specifically put here to create and collaborate with one another.

Reuniting the same band from the 1970 Troubadour show, King continued with her barrage of hits, with favorites like “It’s too late”, “I Feel The Earth Move”, and “So Far Away”, but really brought down the house when she shocked me, and many people around me with her hit song “The Loco-Motion” (come on baby, do the loco-motion….). There were so many of these iconic songs, and it took me a few generations to realize that Carole King wrote lots of them, over 118 to be exact. This vast catalog rivaled and slightly over-shadowed that of the humble, almost demure Taylor. Although it may have been King’s stage presence and vibrance that stole the Bowl’s spotlight, the pairing of these two great singers was one to see - quite a treat.

With far more credits for writing than singing, we debated over who‘s royalty check we‘d rather cash, Carole King’s or Madonna’s. Everyone agreed, they would take Carole King’s in a heartbeat.

IIT HAS BEEN SAID THAT HB 10-1284 IS A LEG-ISLATIVE MONSTRONCITY THAT WILL BEGIN TO REGULATE THE MEDICAL MARIJUANA INDUSTRY. Even the most seasoned attorney will need a pot of coffee to get through this bill. If you haven’t read through HB 10-1284, it is composed of 78 pages of legal terminology that will define the future of the medical marijuana industry in Colorado. Jack My-ers, owner Bijou Wellness Center of Colorado Springs would like further clarification of the bill due to the ambiguities that exist in various sections. He, like many dispensary owners throughout Colorado, are carefully consulting with their advisors on the best way to comply fully with this new law. As of this date, Governor Ritter has not signed it into law. All bets from the medical mari-juana community indicate that he will sign it.

Whether you feel good, bad or indifferent about it, the indus-try will have to comply with its many requirements or risk going out of business. In the last year, Colorado has seen possibly over 1,000 dispensaries open. The State of Colorado has questioned if dispensaries are even legal. If there is something good about HB 10-1284, it will recognize dispensaries as legitimate entities—now called “centers”—for distributing medical marijuana to patients. This bill has been viewed as being crafted by law enforcement and not about the rights of patients. John Amerson of 3 Buds Organ-ics believes the majority of the bill is okay for the industry, but patients will be impacted. They will see it from dispensaries hav-

ing to close due to fees, regulation and ordinances that are being imposed.

The Department of Revenue is creating the State Licensing Au-thority that will be responsible for all aspects of the medical mari-juana industry. This is the same department that Senator Romer said would employ “auditors with guns” to manage any misbehavior. We didn’t find this terminology within HB 10-1284, but it does state that medical marijuana enforcement investigators are Peace Officers.

If HB 10-1284 was a script for a movie, the medical marijuana bakeries and infused product manufacturers just received starring roles.

Generally speaking, dispensary owners have always wanted to follow laws and regulations. Austin Martinson of Karmceuti-cals believes it is good to have some regulation, but after the bill goes into effect “this is ultimately about taking care of our patients and providing them the relief they need from pain. “ The medical marijuana industry has always and will need to continue to focus on the needs of patients, but prior to HB 10-1284 the rules were never clearly defined until now.

There are 4 types of licenses that will be issued by the State Licensing Authority:

MEDICAL MARIJUANA CENTER LICENSEThe medical marijuana community adopted the term “medical marijuana dispensary.” For reasons unknown, the dispensary moniker has now been replaced with “center.” Medical Marijuana Center, as defined by HB 10-1284, is a “person” licensed to oper-ate a business to sell medical marijuana to registered patients or primary caregivers. The definition of person includes partnership, association, Limited Liability Company, corporation etc.

They believe HB 10-1284 will help everyone involved in the industry, but they recognize there are gray areas that must be sorted out, such as ver-tical integration for growing medical marijuana. “The challenge for some people in our industry is that some are great retailers, but might be horrible at growing medicine” said a Dazy’s representa-tive who chose to remain anonymous. HB 10-1284 is requiring owners to be good at both.

Bakeries and edible manufacturers are defined as producers of products infused with medical marijuana which are intended for consumption other than smoking. This would include edible products, ointments, and tinctures. This group will now have their own Medical Marijuana Infused Products Manufacturing License to hang on their wall. They will need to occupy a commercial space and use equipment exclusively for the production of medical marijuana infused products. These manufacturers can sell to any medical marijuana center, but are limited to obtaining their sup-ply of medical marijuana from only 5 medical marijuana centers. OPTIONAL PREMISES CULTIVATION LICENSEPrior to HB 10-1284, the medical marijuana grower was a care-giver for all intended purposes. Growers must now come out from under the shadows, otherwise they will no longer exist legally. The bill has created a separate license for growing medical marijuana called the Optional Premises Cultivation License. It is important to know that only Medical Marijuana Centers or Medical Mari-juana Infused Products (Bakery) may have an optional premise cultivation license. Page 65 of the bill specifically states:

Limit of cultivation of medical marijuana: Only registered patients, licensed prima-ry caregivers, medical marijuana infused products manufacturing operations with an optional premises cultivation license, and licensed medical marijuana centers with optional premises cultivation licenses may cultivate medical marijuana.

This requirement has created a panic amongst growers, forc-ing them to form alliances quickly with medical marijuana cen-ters. Laurel Alterman of Altermeds in Louisville Colorado, will continue to align her dispensary with high quality growers, as she

Alliances between growers and dispensary centers might be formed as limited liability entities such as partnerships or LLC’s. A recent meeting hosted by the Cannabis Therapy Institute and Medical Marijuana Business Alliance had 10 attorneys discuss-ing this specific issue. Medical marijuana attorney Danyel Joffe recommended standardized industry forms that could serve as a template to form these contractual relationships. She further mentions that centers and growers will need to get “married.” This contract will serve as their marriage certificate.

1st deadline affects anyone wishing to open a medical marijuana center or bakery. You need to apply to the local government to operate an approved business. The bill doesn’t require anything beyond the application to be compliant.

The next major deadline is August 1, 2010. The State Licens-ing Authority will provide forms to be completed and a fee must be paid by this date. Failure to meet this deadline could result in criminal penalties and “prima-facie” evidence of unsatisfactory character, record, and reputation for any future application for li-cense. In other words, you won’t have any future opportunity to obtain a license for a medical marijuana center or infused prod-ucts manufacturer.

The final deadline is September 1, 2010 which requires cer-tification that you are cultivating 70 percent of your medicine. At this point, it is uncertain as to what is required to meet this stipu-lation.

Recently, Biocare of Denver Colorado noticed “orphaned” patients assigning them as their primary caregiver. Could this be a sign of what is to come in the medical marijuana industry in Colorado? Maybe dispensaries and caregivers have already de-clared enough is enough and Senator Romer was correct that 50 percent of the industry will close. For the past 14 years, the medi-cal marijuana industry in California has seen their share of regula-tion. They have proven to be a resilient industry with a November ballot to legalize it. That resiliency can certainly be duplicated in Colorado. This will require a concerted effort and action by cen-ters, growers, patients and affiliated business to collaborate.

Get a truck that was meant for rock crawling. If it doesn’t say Toyota, Jeep, or Land Rover on the side... don’t even think about it. Even a Hummer has a tough time around here, as most of these trails were blazed by vintage Jeeps sporting a 80” wide wheelbase. The Hummer’s wheelbase is closer to 130 inches wide. Jeep, Toyota, and Land Rover have built modest off-road machines based on a short, stout, but agile chassis. Many off-road enthusiasts will be quick to tell you that the truck with the smallest footprint will perform best in the rocky terrain of Colorado. As long as vehicle height isn’t excessive (40”+ tires and lifts), a shorter wheelbase will keep your vehicle above the rocks. This sure beats the alternative of getting high centered on jagged rocks. Most skid plates are not adequate protection from such hazards.

Let’s look at things realistically. If you want to take your Suburban off-road, keep some things in mind. Obstacles in excess of 10” are common on old Jeep trails. Even if that SUV has 4 wheel drive, the 6-8” ground clearance was likely designed for city use. That little ground clearance will get you nothing but ruined running boards, dented differentials, and gashed up gas tanks... fun. I guess you could dump a chunk of change into that grocery getter with big

4-wheeling in Colorado is one of the BEST ways to enjoy everything this state has to offer... for five months out of the year.. More importantly, 4-wheeling may actually be the only way to get away from the crowds of the weekend day-trippers.

Anyone who’s been along for a ride with a novice rock crawler, knows that all you need is a high clearance vehicle and a nice day to enjoy some off road adventuring. That’s the problem, though. It seems that everyone in Colorado has an SUV. A bigger problem still is that most weekend warriors don’t have the tricked out rides that they think they have. As a result, many moderately difficult 4-wheel trails will get backed up due to incompetents behind the wheels of inappropriate vehicles. A traffic jam on an off-road trail... can you imagine that? People looking to get away from those posers without

tires, lift kits, and suspension upgrades. Although, I’m not sure that a monster truck will make grocery shopping any easier.

You don’t have to spend more than $10K to get into a truck with any off road potential. Acquiring a used off road vehicle that has 4 wheel drive, 9” plus ground clearance, and a short wheelbase is the best way to start putting together your rock crawler. Land Rovers are expensive, Jeeps are great if you like to fix things (read everything), and there are hundreds of used Toyota trucks still running in the area. As Toyotas are cost effective and reliable, find one with low miles or drop a new motor in your favorite chassis generation and get to work.

You’ll need to address ground clearance. Lose those running boards, those are the first things to get trashed on the trail. Lift kits are a simple way to eliminate ground clearance issues. You should also try running on bigger rubber. 30” and greater tires with an aggressive All-Terrain or Mud-Terrain tread. Bigger tires can often be enough to solve minor ground clearance issues. Suspension upgrades like bigger shocks or springs will smooth out your ride and increase ground clearance.

Another necessary improvement would be to install a reinforced front bumper/grill along with a remote controlled winch. Not if, but when you need assistance, a heavy bumper and winch could save

your day. Remote control, you say? This feature would come in very handy if you were alone requiring assistance. That, and it keeps you from having to winch out while standing knee deep in the snow or mud.

That all might sound excessive, but think about the proposition of one of your buddies having to pull your stuck rig out of some tight spot without the proper gear. That’s gonna end well. Do not trust that YOUR buddies are prepared! What if you’re alone, showing your someone special a good time? Without the appropriate tools, you could be stuck... for a while. That won’t happen now... you’re informed, you’re geared up, and ready to roll.

But where?

There are many good 4-wheeling maps and books available at sporting goods stores. Even Google Earth can be a fun way to figure out where you’re headed once you decide on an area. But that would require even more reading and research. Please... just drive west. Pick a canyon. More often than not, unmarked dirt roads end up as narrow jeep trails giving access to secluded mountain lakes, trails and camping spots known only by other adventurers bound only by confidence and gear. Just make sure that you’re NOT on private property. This is still Colorado. You wouldn’t want to end up on the wrong end of a shotgun held by an extra from the set of Deliverance.

White water rafting season has just begun and

its time to book a trip on the river before the prime

time for adventure passes. Most companies open in

April and run until September but they all believe

that the best time for rafting is June through August.

The difficulty of certain sections and rivers is

determined by a standard rating called class. Class

two are regular and easy waves, class three involves

moderately difficult rapids with irregular waves that

requires an intermediate level of rafting, class four

includes difficult, intense and powerful rapids that

require precise movement, and class five rapids

are extremely difficult as they generally involve

continuous, large waves with a steep gradient.

Clear Creek:

Clear Creek, only 30 minutes from Denver, is a river that offers something for everybody. One section is great for beginners, but packed with eleven class three rapids ensured to keep the trip from being a snooze fest. Another section is perfect for those in the intermediate to advanced level as it is steep, technical, packed with class three and four rapids, and guaranteed to keep your paddle moving. Finally, there is a section meant for serious paddlers only with class four and five rapids, making what some would call one of the most continuous sections of whitewater in Colorado.

Arkansas River:

Another spot for river rafting is the classic Arkansas River, considered to be America’s favorite rafting spot. The first section is Brown Canyon, a stretch perfect for all ages and levels of experience, packed with well-known class three rapids and a spectacular scenery of snow capped peaks. Another section is the Granite Gorge, a beautiful and remote stretch great for those looking for an introduction to white water rafting. The Numbers is a section guaranteed for thrills as it has advanced class three and four rapids, steep drops, and whitewater in between rapids. The most advanced section of the Arkansas River is Pine Creek, which houses the most continuous rapids in the state. This is probably the most versatile river as companies offer trips as short as 1/3 of a day to trips as long as 6 days. Colorado River:

The Colorado River offers two extremes: scenic floating perfect for a family, and hardcore rapids for serious adventurers only. The former involves class two, gently flowing water and few small rapids perfect for all ages and beginners. Inflatable kayaks are available on this stretch for those wanting a more individualist approach, as you would be paddling yourself exclusively. The latter is a stretch in Gore Canyon that serves as the ultimate rafting experience with advanced class 5 rapids, the steepest gradient drop per mile in the country and a vertical waterfall in the heart of the canyon, earning it the reputation of being the hardest whitewater commercially run in Colorado. Blue River:

Blue River is just north of Silverthorne and it offers a perfect mixture of all rafting has to offer. Blue River is perfect for first timers looking for a shorter adventure as it has a perfect mix of class two to three rapids and the beautiful scenery of the Gore Range Mountains.

There are hundreds of rafting companies in Colorado, but there are a few that stand out. Ava (coloradorafting.net) has a really nice, friendly, interactive website that really helps you to pick the right trip and they offer free equipment, riverside food, wetsuits, and sleeping pads for overnight trips. Buffalo Joes (buffalojoe.com) serves riverside food, offers group discounts and has more flexibility for customizing, but some gear they require you rent. Rock Gardens Rafting (rockgardens.com) operates exclusively in Glenwood Canyon, but they offer inflatable kayaks and river tubes along with ordinary rafts, provide free transportation to and from hotels, and offer purchasable professional photographs of your trip.

group, every game is important and we rarely

if ever miss a broadcast. Unfortunately, teams

get days off and on those dark days, what is

a baseball fan to do to satisfy the

need for shut-outs and deep flies?

I wouldn’t dream of watching another team’s

game, so I go to the DVD player and pop in a

baseball flick. On my teams last off day, I made

a mental compilation of my favorite movies

about America’s pastime. My top 10 are here

for you to argue. No matter what you decide

about my choices, each one of these films is

worth seeing and even owning.

Someday people will walk down the street and say, “I saw The Natural. It is the best there ever was.” Roy Hobbs may be the best fictional baseball player there ever was and Robert Redford’s portrayal of the slugger is legendary. The drama overshadows the baseball but with the Randy Newman soundtrack and the blood soaked shirt, it’s homerun every time.

This is my sentimental favorite because of the real life story of Jim Morris, the high school science teacher who saw his major league dream realized on a dare and an alignment of stars. Dennis Quaid plays Morris and does so with such believability as a pitcher that you wonder what his radar gun would register. With the plot of the laboring Owls ( high school team Morris coached) making it to district and the aging teacher tossing 97MPH fastballs with no good explanation, the Rookie is walk off.

Tatum O’ Neil and Robert Matthau won my heart as a small child and never lost it. These Bears are the quintessential misfits that all misfits aspire to. Beer drinking manager, foul mouthed kids and the savior Kelly smoking on his motorcycle makes the Bad News Bears a 3-2 come from behind win in the bottom of the 9th.

This was Geena Davis’s finest hour for sure. The best baseball movies are the true stories and the All American Girls Baseball League that inspired Penny Marshall’s tale of the women who got the chance to pay pro ball during wartime is a gem. With the exception of the stupid song and singing in the clubhouse, this movie is near perfect and it’s my favorite Tom Hanks performance of all time. Penny Marshall’s no hitter.

I saw this movie for the first time about 2 years ago and it quickly made my list of favorites. This is Billy Crystal’s labor of love and his admiration for the game translates well to the script and the screen. The story is of the 1961 Yankees and Roger Maris and Mickey Mantel’s race to beat Babe Ruth’s single season home run record. The film digs into the off the field lives of both Mantel and Maris and shows the human side of two of baseball’s best all-time players. A home stand sweep. *Mark McGuire should be forced to watch this movie daily.

I laughed, laughed and then laughed some more at Albert Brook’s portrayal of a Yankee’s scout who is banished to Mexico as punishment for a bad signing. He discovers Steve Nebraska, a pitcher who blows away hitters with a 100MPH fastball and hits like Ty Cobb. Once a Yankee, Nebraska shows signs of emotional

instability and starts seeing a shrink named Dr. H. Aaron (Dianne Weist). A laugher from moment one.

“If you build it, they will come” has become a national motto. The best farm team in the league.

Kevin Costner is Mr. Baseball Movie and this may be the most authentic baseball movie on the list. The minor leagues are a strange and wonderful place that is portrayed in its real and brutal light. The romance between Costner and Sarandon is touching and not overstated. Tim Robbins is the perfect Rook and Costner plays the part with true heart and believability. A triple play.

You’re killing me, Smalls! These neighborhood kids may be in second place behind the Bad News Bears, but the charm of this movie is the group of friends who spend a summer playing ball and creating adventure after adventure. Be a kid for a couple of hours and realize how many great lines come from this movie. Rookie of the Year every year.

This month we take a look at the inception of something great, innovative, and very important in so many of our lives - video games. In June of 1972, the brilliant minds of Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney created Atari Inc., and with a simple Tennis game named Pong, opened the rabbit’s hole to creative minds of many different cultures, and generations.

I think it was the Hanukkah of 1975.…. We had to wait eight long days to open our big gift, but my brother and I were handsomely rewarded with an Atari Pong game system. This dinosaur in the world of “gaming”, (which wasn’t even a term then) was a marvel to be seen. It came with only the one game, as the idea of cartridges weren’t introduced until the1980 version of the Atari 2600. Imagine playing Tennis, with a video paddle, that you could actually control - on the T.V.!!!!! As a six year old, this was about the greatest thing since the hand break was added to the Big Wheel. Life was pretty good in the ‘70’s.

As Big Wheels turned to BMX, so did the advancements of video games, and the advent of the local arcade. With stand up machines, and sit down table-tops, Atari was making most of the favorites at the time, like Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, Frogger, Lunar Lander, Missile Command, Centipede, and the classic, Asteroids. Anyone growing up in the Valley during the 80’s remembers 20 Grand Palace, the arcade featured in the movie War Games, or the now closed Malibu Grand Prix. For adolescents and adults alike, these places provided an escape from the regular world. A place where one could Joust on top of a huge flying ostrich, or go to battle on the Frontline, or

capture laser beams, in the future of Tron. Even for those casually involved, video games have been a great source of entertainment since the beginning, and the trend seems to be growing.

As joysticks and toggle switch triggers have advanced, so has the world of video games. Now that the virtual world they spoke of is here, games like Resident Evil, Grand Theft Auto, Halo, and Call Of Duty are leading the pack. With so many start up electronic game companies on the market, and industry numbers exceeding those of the film industry, it seems that the creators of Atari were on to something. Whatever success the industry has seen, rests on the shoulders of these pioneers.

So whether it’s paddles and popsicle sticks, or virtual game rooms with just you and your Sheldon Black Bong as protection, let’s remember a time gone by. A bit more innocent, and a lot less bloody - at least virtually….

The road to Leadville is no easy trek, even by today’s modern methods. Imagine crossing Independence Pass in winter, circa 1800, on horseback with mining supplies and a family. Thousands of people did just that during the Colorado mining boom. The rich history of America’s highest incorporated city is a tale that has been told in books, films and song. The Unsinkable Molly Brown was married in the church and Buffalo Bill moved to Leadville after the shooting at OK Coral. Bill famously died of pneumonia here shortly before his 71st birthday. The small town has seen its share of riches and times of struggle. In the 1980s, the town’s last working mine closed and sent the region into a tailspin recession, nearly making Leadville a ghost town. Today the city survives on its tourism and outdoor recreation industries. Since Independence Pass opens just after Memorial Day, it’s a great time to pack up the car and explore one of America’s most storied mining towns.

With its 70 square blocks of Victorian architecture, Leadville is the kind of getaway where time stands still. The quaintness of the downtown and the adjacent mining territory are worth

spending time exploring. One of the most famous buildings is the Tabor Opera House, which celebrated its 130th anniversary in 2009. If you go on a weekend, they host a Tabor Tea every Sunday where you can enjoy a tour and high tea, as it was served in the boom days.

The Leadville Historic District is a National Historic Landmark District that includes the Tabor Grant Hotel, St. George’s Church, Annunciation Church, Tabor Opera House, City Hall, Healy House, Dexter Cabin, Engelbach House, and Tabor House, as well as mining structures and small homes.

Leadville and Twin Lakes offer plenty to do in the summertime. Camping at the top of the Rockies is nothing short of spectacular. Leadville does get cold at night year round, so pack accordingly. Popular activities include fishing, horseback riding, hiking and 4-wheeling (available for rent in town), mountain biking and golf. KUSH: How would you describe your music?

LM: Our music has been defined as “good get-high music” by legions of fans worldwide. Our music is for the people, the patients, the growers, the care-givers, the hemp believers, as well as the smokers and the tokers around the globe. Our ideology toward the plant has come a long way from our earlier music. The change was inspired by Eddy Lepp and Jack Herer the first time we went to Amsterdam for the Cannabis Cup.

KUSH: What’s been the most challenging part in keeping your band alive?

LM: The name “Los Marijuanos” has been the greatest challenge for the band. A lot of respectable venues wouldn’t book us, radio stations wouldn’t play us, magazines wouldn’t cover us just because the name was so similar to the word marijuana. The name and the logo with the leaf is just too in-your-face for a lot of people; especially when we were starting out. Even my own family was worried about the name. But, I never thought of changing it; it is who we are and what we represent.

KUSH: How do you feel about the regulation of medical marijuana?

LM:  I am in full support of medical marijuana in all states. Any measure that helps free the weed and legitimizes it for medical use is good to me. I think it’s a good place to start, but I am also in support of full legalization for everyone. As it states in the Bible, “God put every plant on this planet for us to use,” and if you look at the history of the plant, it has been a sacrament of religion and people for ages. Only recently has it been outlawed. 

KUSH: What band has had the most influence on you and your bandmates?

LM: Queen -- Freddy Mercury is one of my favorite vocalists ever. Bands like the Rolling Stones, The Eagles, all the classic rock and R&B artists (too many to name). Old-school hip-hop artists, like Public Enemy, RUN DMC, Total Devastation. As far as in the Marijuana Freedom Fighters, Eddy Lepp, Jack Herer, Brett Bogue, Marc Emery, Rick Simpson, Steve Hager, Tommy Chong and last, but not least, my boys from Cypress Hill. If it wasn’t for them opening the door, Los Marijuanos would have never been. Much love to B-Real and the homies, and everyone who fights to free the plant. 

 KUSH: How many albums does Los Marijuanos have?

LM: Puro Plieto (1999), The Smoke Out (2001), Marijuanos 4 Life (2004), 23 Biggest Tokes Greatest Hits Album (2005), Donde Esta’ mi Feria? (2007), Trippin on Tricombs (2010).

KUSH: What’s next for your band?

LM: Putting in mad work, my nugget. I just put the final touches on the new “Trippin’ on Tricombs” CD, set to drop in fall of 2010. Then we are playing shows in support of the new release. I got something really cool lined up with Apothecary Travel and Green House: We are hiding a “GREEN TICKET” in the new album. One lucky fan who finds the “GREEN TICKET” will win a trip to smoke and party with Los Marijuanos at the Cannabis Cup 2010 in Amsterdam, a free Zephyr Ion Vaporizer, 300 euros spending money and more! P UMPKIN & GINGER SOUP • 4 cups canned or fresh puree pumpkin • 1 cup carrots • ½ cup celery • ¼ cup fresh ginger • 1 cup onions • 8 cups of chicken stock • 1 bunch marjoram • pinch salt & pepper • 1 ½ cup canna cream

CANNA-CREAMTake 2 cups of cream and add 1/8 oz of good quality Cannabis. Refrigerate for 2 days and shake twice a day. It is now ready to add to your dishes.

METHODPlace all the ingredients, except cream, into a pot and bring to a boil. Lower heat and simmer for 20-25 minutes. When cool, blend the soup to a puree consistency and reheat the soup and season to taste. Add the canna cream just before serving. Garnish with croutons if desired and enjoy.

POT ATO SALAD • 4 slices of bacon • 1 medium yellow onion • ½ cup chopped celery • ¼ cup chopped sweet pickles • ½ teaspoon salt • 2 teaspoon diced green pepper • 5 cups cubed cooked potato • 3 hard boiled eggs, chopped • ½ cup canna infused olive oil & ½ cup mayo mixed • ½ diced scotch bonnet pepper or chili pepper (optional)

METHODMix all ingredients in a big bowl and chill.

DEVILLED PORK CHOPS • 4 medium size pork chops • 4 oz canna butter • 2 small onions, chopped • 1 teaspoon flour • 2 tablespoons ketchup • 8 cups of chicken stock • ½ green, scotch bonnet pepper, sliced • ½ teaspoon all spice • ½ pint water • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce • salt to taste

METHODTrim the pork chops and lightly brown them in canola or light oil. Remove for heat and brown onions in same oil. Stir in flour, cook stirring until golden brown. Remove from heat. Gradu-ally add water, pepper, all spice, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, ½ canna butter, ketchup and salt to taste. Place pork chop in the sauce and gently simmer on low for 20 minutes or until tender. Add remaining canna butter and mix and serve.

ROASTED CHICKEN WITH CANNA RICE AND PEAS • 3 cups of rice (instant) • 1 cup of pease or beans of your choice • 12 oz of canna coconut milk • 3 teaspoons canna butter • 3 sprigs of thyme • 3 teaspoons garlic • 2 stalks green onions • ½ cup fresh corn (roasted optional) • ¼ teaspoon black pepper and salt

CANNA COCONUT MILKMake canna coconut milk by adding 1/8 oz of cannabis to coconut milk and let stand in refrigerator for 2 days shaking twice a day. Strain cannabis and coconut milk is ready for use.

METHODAdd all ingenious in your normal rice and water and cook as instructed. Once rice is ready add canna butter and stir. Top with Chicken as an option.

CANNA BANANA SURPRISE • 6 ripe bananas • 2 oz canna butter • 2 oz brown sugar • 5 teaspoons dark rum • Grated rind of ½ a lemon • vanilla ice cream

METHODPeel the bananas and s lice slantwise. Place in a shallow oven proof dish; sprinkle a little brown sugar between the layers of bananas. Melt canna butter and remaining brown sugar together, beat in rum and lemon rind, spread on top of bananas. Bake in oven at 275 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes, spoon on ice cream while hot and enjoy.

I have to admit when I first took on this story I thought it was going to be just a product review about a cool (or let’s say healthier) way to medicate. Wow was I wrong. AAs reported in late May by Bloomberg Business Week, 15 Federal lawmakers led by U.S. Representative Barney Frank are trying to get banks to recognize that medical marijuana clinics are legitimate and lawful businesses. These lawmakers are trying to get the Treasury Department to set rules that will encourage banks to provide financial services to these businesses.

“Legitimate state-legal businesses are being denied access to banking services, which does not serve the public interest,” the lawmakers said in a May 20 letter to Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner that was distributed today by Americans for Safe Access, a patient-advocacy group. Frank, a Massachusetts Democrat and chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, signed the letter with 12 Democrats and two Republicans.

Colorado’s Representative Jared Polis (D), asks the Treasury to issue “formal written guidance” assuring banks they won’t be targeted for doing businesses with companies that distribute medical marijuana.

Lenders including Bank of America, Wells Fargo and other U.S. lenders have stopped opening new accounts for vendors that provide medical marijuana because cannabis consumption and distribution are illegal under federal law. Frank believes that if states have passed laws that have made medical marijuana a legal business that the U.S. Treasury should not tell banks “they can’t service them the way they would service any other business.” This is a state matter, according to Frank and his fellow lawmakers.

Frank and Ron Paul are co-sponsors of a bill that would repeal the federal law that makes marijuana use a crime and let states decide whether to legalize it. States that do so then would be able to collect sales tax on marijuana, Frank said.

According to studies conducted by the California State Board of Equalization, Californians use over 1 million pounds of marijuana each year. A sales tax of $50 per ounce could generate $1.38 billion in annual revenue for the state, according to an estimate from the board.

According to Polis, denying financial services to medical marijuana dispensaries creates “an increased risk to public safety with potential theft or robbery that any cash-only or cash-reliant business faces” and makes it harder for vendors “to accurately account for tax liability.”

Colorado dispensaries are constantly being denied credit card accounts or have their banks turning them down for checking and credit-card vending accounts because banks are worried about running afoul of anti-money-laundering and asset-forfeiture laws

according to Polis. One of the biggest problems currently facing these businesses is the banking and credit issue.

According to Mary Eshet, a spokesperson for Wells Fargo, she has stated that Wells continues to provide services to dispensaries that were customers, but that Wells has a policy to stop taking on new medical marijuana businesses.

“Since Wells Fargo is a national bank, we developed our policy in alignment with the federal law and opted not to open new accounts with medical marijuana dispensaries,” according to Ms. Eshet.

According to Bank of America’s spokesperson, Shirley Norton, the position of the biggest U.S. lender, is that there is “no choice” other than to avoid doing business with medical marijuana dispensaries as long as the federal government outlaws it. Bank of America considers this a legal decision, not a moral decision.

The decision by big banks to shun an industry that could generate $100 billion in annual sales has created a void and prompted marijuana businesses to search for alternative financial services providers, according to Allen St. Pierre, executive director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, or NORML, based in Washington.

According to St. Pierre, “The scramble is definitely afoot right now for procuring not only competent services, but also fairly priced ones,” and that, “there’s a number of folks on the front range who are now doing business with community banks, cooperatives and credit unions.”
