certainly not a new concept to want to have your constitutional rightsupheld, not to mention not having them wiped out by a bunch o misinormedbureaucrats with a pen in their hands. Why do we as medical marijuana patientseel like we are living in the age o McCarthyism or the Salem Witch Hunts?Patients rights to medical privacy are being eroded aster then all o the lawyers
in Caliornia can react. As NIMBYs* in cities throughout Caliornia discuss whether or not to allow
medical marijuana dispensaries in their backyards, Governor Schwarzenegger isnow pushing or a debate on legalizing recreational marijuana. A Petaluma specialinterest group has contacted Sonoma State University about adding medicalmarijuana programs to their curriculum.
opical to say the least medical marijuana and marijuana in general has takenover daily conversations and is so commonplace now that we nd it on the covero Fortune Magazine, on the ull panel discussions on CNBC, and sometimeseven supplanting stories about the economic crisis, Haiti, or other such signicantand important issues o today. So why is there still so much controversy?
Proponents claim that legalizing marijuana could help to balance the statebudget. Betty Yee, chair o the State Board o Equalization, estimates that a
regulated marijuana industry could yield Caliornia as much as $1.3 billion inannual tax revenue.
So whats happening in Southern Caliornia you ask? Well to start, in thesecond largest city in the country, the Los Angeles City Council has passed anordinance that will shut down over 1000 dispensaries, and cause 95% o the
remaining dispensaries to move.Yes you read it right, in the worst recession since the great depression o
1929, the City o Los Angeles, plans on closing down 1000 businesses. Insteado ollowing the 81% o the voters in this state who avor legalizing and taxingmarijuana the same way we tax liquor and prescription drugs, LA is unemployingthousands o workers, vacating 1000 leased storeronts, and giving our localeconomy a swi and hard kick in the groin.
But wait; am I just talking about money here? I dont think so! We are talkingabout them taking away o our constitutional rights, not only without rhyme orreason but without the due process that is supposed to protect us rom thingslike this. Remember, we did vote and pass Prop. 215 in 1996 to legalize medicalmarijuana in the State o Caliornia. Now through a dumbounded ordinancethe city o lost angels is pushing our rights backwards by at least 14 years, and
probably a lot more.Lets ace it, its only a matter o time beore sensible and smart people passlegislation where marijuana is taxed, controlled, and regulated. Te tragedy is thatin the meantime billions o dollars will be wasted, and these archaic marijuanalaws will harm millions o people.
Its up to us as compassionate and caring voters who care about human rightsto take a stance and to make sure that the time comes as soon as possible!
We all need to seek out opportunities to support laws, reerendums, recallsand platorms that support our eelings and opinions. I we dont, who will?

Coachella Music and Arts Festival known in short asCOACHELLA FEST, is the Mecca of Music and Art Festivals.
Its also the benchmark by which most festivals are com-
pared, worldwide. Started in 1999 (missing one year in 2000,due to lack of ticket sales), Coachella has come back strong
as THE WEST COAST FESTIVAL to attend each Spring. Along
with THREE MAIN STAGES AND MULTIPLE DJ TENTS, thereare also large art installations set up all over the complex.
For those dance-crazed, rave-minded attendees, there is a
special area devoted just to DANCE MUSIC - ALL WEEKEND.The hit list of bands whove played in years past is a whos
who of contemporary rock n roll. With such headline acts as
BECK, RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, OASIS, RADIOHEAD, THECURE, ROGER WATERS, PRINCE, MADONNA, RAGE AGAINST
THE MACHINE, PAUL MCCARTNEY & DAFT PUNK, its evident
that these promoters are in tune with what the people want. After months of message boards and blogs post, the long-await-
ed reveal of the highly anticipated lineup has been released.
It seems that the heads at Goldenvoice/AEG Live have onceagain put together another KICK-ASS LINEUP FOR 2010.

GROWER'S
GROVE:Tips for pruning Tips
by JOSH KAPLAN
With any landscape, tree or shrub, pruningcan be advantageous to the growth o the plant.
his holds true or our avorite plant in this wild
kingdom - marijuana.
Pruning is the removal or reduction o certainplant parts that are not required, that are no
longer eective, or that are o no use to the plant.
It is done to supply additional energy or the
development o lowers, ruits, and limbs that
remain on the plant.
Each time a growing tip is clipped, the stem
branches into two shoots, which begin to grow
rom the nearest lea axils (the area where the
lea and stem join). By pruning your plants, you
will be improving its health, while increasing its
value. And lets ace it, the better your plant, the
better its value - right?
So now that we have our objectives and a ew
basic principles down, lets keep in mind the
most important actor in all o this - common
sense. Basically, use your head, and dont get too
overzealous with the scissors.
When pruning, keep these simple steps in mind:
1.) he beginning stage
Pruning a growing marijuana plant is an easy way o
controlling uneven growth without seriously harming the
plant. Ideally developed rom a clone, youd want to wait until
at least two weeks, or until ater the irst ivebladed leaves
have ormed (this is when the vegetative stage begins). Many
growers choose to wait until the ourth or ith week to prune
the growing tips, to allow development o lower branches, thus
illing in horizontal space.
2.) Have a game plan
It is always better to plan a pruning strategy or your
developing plants, rather than haphazardly clipping o growth
on an irregular basis. Each time a growing tip is removed, the
plant takes a ew days to recover beore its growth resumes.
he marijuana with the greatest potency is ound in the
growing tips, and by the three month mark, they should make
a high quality o smoke. So again, try not to mess with them
too much, and your patience should pay o. Pruning is ine
at any stage o the plants development, just dont overdo it.
Severe pruning can harm the growth o your plant. Remember,
you just want to eliminate the excess dead leaves that are
potentially sapping all the light, and blocking other leaves inthe process.
3.) Be patient and understanding with your plant(node what we mean??)
he amount o new growth ormed with continued
pruning is limited by the genetic structure o the seed, and
the conditions o the environment. Its not recommended that
you prune every node in a developing plant. ry to prune
every second or third node to allow the plant time to recover.
Wait or the new node to start growing beore clipping the
8/9/2019 Kush Magazine / Southern California / Feb-2010
23/100kush 2
young branch a ew millimeters above the previous nodes
newly ormed leaves. Its also advisable to use small scissors as
opposed to simply plucking o the growing tips by hand.
4.) Know what youre pruning
Never prune more than the single growing tip, or upper
most node, rom any branch on the growing plant. he upper
most growing tip o an unpruned marijuana plant will always
be more potent than that o the top o a pruned plant grown
in similar conditions. But lets not get caught trippin on just the top. Lets think about the whole plant. Pruning the
tallest branches ensures that the lower branches grow upward,
orming a larger surace area or the light to cover. he clear
luid that oten lows rom the end o a newly pruned branch
contains substances which seal the wound and aid the healing
process. Although it is recommended that you remove all
dying leaves rom the plant, you should resist the temptation to
prune too many healthy leaves. Keep in mind that even though
it may be better developed, a pruned marijuana plant does not
always produce more buds than an unpruned plant. Another
good reason or pruning is to take healthy cuttings rom a
strong growing, or avorite plant, or urther hydroponic
development (cloning).
5.) Use i needed as your pruning rule o thumb
Marijuana growers oten prune their plants in an attempt to
limit their height and prevent unwanted detection. I you have
that type o operation, all o this is probably old hat or you. I
you are the average home grower, remember that by pruning
a growing tip, you are removing the most potent part o the
plant, thereby spoiling its chance o reaching ull maturity. By
pruning all the buds at harvest time, rather than cutting the
stem o above the ground, you could easily harvest your planta second time. One great advantage to pruning your marijuana
plant is that youre lowering their resistance to harmul natural
enemies such as insects, ungus and temperature luctuations.
Do not prune any growing tips i you notice that your
plants health is declining or has started losing leaves. Although
smoking your pruned tips is ok, plants should be pruned to
develop their growth, rather than or smoking purposes.
While it may be tempting to prune emale buds during early
lowering, your harvest will be severely reduced by doing
so. Cannabis indica is genetically smaller and bushier than
cannabis sativa, and usually requires less pruning.
So remember, be patient and concise when pruning. You
know when you need a haircut dont you? Well the same
patience and concern should be taken with your little babies.
Good luck, andhappy growing!!

AROUNDtheSTATESupreme Court Strikes Down Marijuana Quantity Limits as Unconstitutional.
byGARY HILLE
On January 21, 2010, the Caliornia Supreme Courts decisionin People v. Kelly struck down the Caliornia Medical MarijuanaProgram Acts limits on the amount o dried marijuana andnumber o marijuana plants a qualied patient can possess asunconstitutional. However, the numbers 8, 6 and 12 (reerring to8 ounces o dried marijuana, 6 mature marijuana plants and 12immature marijuana plants) remain very important to patients andcooperatives.
Te court eliminated the right or prosecutors to use the8 ounce and 6 (or 12) plant numbers as caps against patients. In this context, the court held that it is unconstitutional to usethe quantities in the 2003 Medical Marijuana Program Act aslimitations on the right to use medical marijuana established by the
1996 Compassionate Use Act which does not speciy an amount omedical marijuana that a patient may possess or cultivate. Te courtheld that a qualied patient may assert, as a deense in court, that heor she possessed or cultivated an amount o marijuana reasonablyrelated to meet his or her current medical needs and not have toworry about the 8 ounce and 6 (or 12) plant quantity limits. Tislanguage stems rom the language o the Compassionate UseAct itsel, which states that the marijuana possessed or cultivatedmust be or the patients personal medical purposes (Section11362.5(d)). In reality, the court merely reiterated the First DistrictCourt o Appeals 1997 decision in People v. rippet, which statedthat the quantity possessed by the patient or the primary caregiver,
and the orm and manner in which it is possessed, should bereasonably related to the patients current medical needs.Te bottom line is that the court held that to the extent the
quantities set orth in Section 11362.77 o the Medical MarijuanaProgram Act are used as limits against patients such as whenthe government tries to use them to limit patient access and use then they are unconstitutional.
Te court did not, however, eliminate the right o patients touse the stated quantities as protective caps under which possessionis permitted and immunized, provided that the patient has a validcountyissued Medical Marijuana Program identication card. Inother words, the quantities cannot be used by law enorcementagainst patients, but they can be used by patients as protectionrom law enorcement.
Te recently passed Los Angeles medical marijuana ordinancestates that dispensing cooperatives and collectives may possessquantities o medical marijuana plants and harvested marijuanain strict accordance with state law. What does that mean now?
Te Supreme Courts decision in People v. Kelly opens the dooror a qualied patient to individually possess in excess o 8 ounces
and 6 (or 12) plants i it is subjectively reasonable or such patient todo so based on such patients current medical needs. Cooperativesand collectives should be careul, however, not to exceed thesequantities unless they are able to demonstrate the reasonablenesso the quantities. Tis is because a patient who elects to possessquantities o marijuana that exceed the immunized levels set orthin the Medical Marijuana Program Act has the burden o proowith respect to the reasonableness o such quantities i challengedby law enorcement.
Chie Justice Ron George wrote in the unanimous courtdecision that [t]hese individuals are not subject to any speciclimits and do not require a physicians recommendation in order to
exceed any such limits . . . [i]nstead they may possess an amount omedical marijuana reasonably necessary or their needs.Although the Chie Justice wrote that a physicians
recommendation is not required in order to exceed the quantitiesset orth in the Medical Marijuana Program Act, the questionis whose determination whether or not a certain quantity isreasonably related to ones current medical needs would be trustedby a hypothetical jury in the event o prosecution? Te mostobvious answer is a qualied health care proessional.
Only time will tell, however, whether physicians will put inthe time and energy required to learn more about the patients theyare evaluating and about the benets o medical marijuana as atherapeutic treatment in order or them to make recommendations
or marijuana use that will stand up in court. It doesnt help thatthe Caliornia Medical Association (CMA) discourages physiciansrom providing specic recommendations regarding usage levels. In guidance published in January 2009, the CMA wrote that it doesnot advise physicians to speciy the amount o cannabis that wouldbe consistent with the patients needs (CMA OnCall, Document#1315, Item 26). Without clear advice rom physicians to exceedthe 8 ounce and 6 (or 12) plant limits in the Medical MarijuanaProgram Act, patients that elect to exceed these quantities may beat risk, notwithstanding the Chie Justices words.

hen given this assignment to interview Cheryl Shuman
- Executive Director of the Beverly Hills NORML90210.org,
I was familiar with NORML of course, but I was un-
aware of a very special woman doing such important, noble work. Getting
only a slight glimpse of this story by a short clip on the NORML blog, the
video depicted a strikingly beautiful blond woman testifying in front ofthe L.A. City Council. With the calmness of a Hollywood starlet delivering
a line, she goes on to say that she is terminally ill, and because she is a
legally prescribed Marijuana user, her insurance will not cover the liver
transplant needed to save her life. This short and direct speech was as
compelling as its outcome is disturbing.
Maybe theres a superior strength that one musters up when faced
with such mind-boggling hurdles? Maybe in light of such magnanimous
frustrations, the bigger picture takes hold, and becomes the focus?
These are questions we all hope to avoid in life. Where does one turn,
when the walls of bureaucracy come crashing down on you? These are
the types of trials and tribulations that might bring the average person
to their knees? This is not the case in Cheryl Shuman. When contacted by Cheryl, I was overwhelmed by her upbeat at-
titude, and positivity. Here is a woman who has a terminal illness, and
is taking the time to spread the word about NORML, and the positive ef-
fects of medicinal Marijuana. Fighting for a cause near and dear to many
peoples hearts, and one that has extended this activists life beyond her
doctors projections. Cheryl Shuman, I commend you.
Q: Cheryl, How long have you been the Executive Director of the Beverly
Hills NORML90210.org? What drew you into being an activist for such a
controversial issue?
A: I have been an activist for Medical Cannabis since 1987. At the time
I was known as the Optician to the Stars, working with such notableHollywood stars as Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Madonna, Julia Roberts, Arnold
Schwarzenegger and many more. With my business as a licensed opti-
cian, I knew that Cannabis had healing properties for patients impacted
by Glaucoma. In my personal life, I rst became a legal medical Canna -
bis patient in 1997. My doctors had prescribed a number of medications
for my anxiety, including Xanax and other highly addictive pharmaceuti-
cals. My body didnt react well to pills, so my physician suggested the use
of medical marijuana. I laughed at the time, because I didnt drink, had
never done drugs, and had never even smoked a cigarette in my life. He
wrote a recommendation letter giving me permission to try it as an alter-
native health choice. It was very difcult for me to nd a safe provider
or caretaker, so that was discouraging. Once I found safe cannabis medi-
cine, it changed my life. For the rst time in my life, I felt healthy, calm
and able to handle the stress load. Cannabis was far superior to any pillthat doctors had previously prescribed. For many years, I was a nancial
supporter to any and all organizations that supported Marijuana Law
Reform. Because of my work at the time with so many celebrities, I was
fearful of coming out of the closet regarding my status as a patient. I
was afraid it would have a negative impact on my career and my family
life, if anyone knew about my personal secret of using Cannabis. I was
intimidated by the negative stereotype associated with being a Cannabis
consumer. As the years went on, I learned more about the leaders in the
Cannabis movement. I followed the stories of Valerie Corral of the WAMM.
org group in Santa Cruz. I was so inspired by this remarkable woman
working with terminally ill patients. When I learned about the federal
raid on their group, I was outraged, and worked to start documenting thestories of patients impacted by the prohibition of Marijuana on a federal
level. I continue to document these events on video, and hope to organize
the footage into a documentary lm.
Q: How has Medical Marijuana made your illness bearable, if at all?
What hope does Marijuana provide you with, in dealing with your health
issues?
A: While Cannabis has saved my life thus far, prohibiting the growth,
spread and metastasizing of the tumors throughout my system, I recently
learned that the mere fact that I used Cannabis as an alternative health
treatment, could disqualify me from a life-saving organ transplant. My
hopes and prayers are that the cannabis medicine that I use daily willkeep me alive until the laws can change. One of the most difcult issues
I deal with daily, is the fact that since my quality of life has improved,
I do not look seriously ill. I dont need a wheelchair, and am no longer
hooked up to machines in a hospital bed. My condition is visible through
CT Scans, MRIs, and Ultrasounds.
Q: While giving your brief statement in front of the L.A. City Council, did
you realize just how impacting your presentation was?
8/9/2019 Kush Magazine / Southern California / Feb-2010
45/100kush 4
A: I had never spoken in front of city council. I had to ght back tears and
emotions, but when my name was called, I tried to condense a lifetime of
experiences in to 60 seconds of testimony. I was terried and intimidated,
but felt like I had to say something. I had no idea that video cameras were
capturing my testimony and I certainly had no idea that the video would be
spread virally throughout the Internet and make it to other news outlets. Itappears that people are responding and Im happy to try to make a differ-
ence. After the hearing, I had to return to my home to recover for a few weeks.
Now I realize that we need to educate the mainstream as to how these laws
are truly impacting patients, families, and the community as a whole. Each
day we receive hundreds of emails and phone calls asking for guidance on
the latest regulations. The legal system is confusing at best. We need to
clarify concise, and consistent legislation.
Q: Are people with medical Marijuana prescriptions really being discriminated
against for their Marijuana smoking?
A: Medical Cannabis patients are discriminated against each and everyday. They are losing their insurance. They are losing their jobs. They are los-
ing their homes. They are losing their children. Why? Discrimination from
employers, landlords, and government agencies forcing these people to be
ruined by the current laws.
Q: Cheryl, You and NORML90210.orgs co-founder Frederic Rhoades are
featured keynote speakers at Hempcon coming to the L.A. Convention Center
Feb 19th -21st , and at the San Francisco San Mateo Event Center, Aug 6th
-8th. Can you tell me a little bit about what issues youll be covering at these
two events?
A: Beverly Hills NORML90210.org is thrilled to be working with the respected
production team of Mega Productions with the 2010 Premiere event ofHempCon.com and the Medical Marijuana Show on February 19th, 20th &
21st at the Los Angeles Convention Center. We are expecting 150,000 peo-
ple to attend the event and learn about the latest legal news impacting
collectives and patients. There will also be educational seminars specically
for women wishing to join the cannabis reform movement, build cannabis
related businesses and become politically active.
Q: As an activist, and spokeswoman for the NORML causes, what messages
would you like people to take from you, and NORML?
A: We support the full legalization for responsible adult use of Marijuanathroughout the nation. With my health issues, I am working towards full
legalization in my lifetime, which is immediate. It is my support and belief
that with the TaxCannabis2010 initiative on the ballot, we have enormous
momentum in California to pass this bill in the fall. Every ounce of my energy
will be working to educate the public, motivating them go get out and VOTE
this law into effect - statewide. It is my strong belief that California leads
the world in Cannabis politics, therefore, I believe that the moment we pass
legalization in California, there will be a domino effect spreading throughout
the other states.
When we have full legalization, with a tax and regulate business
model, the world will see the true benets of this miraculous plant. We will
see health improved for millions not only through cannabis medicines, but
through the funding of educational programs, mental health programs,
support for our veterans suffering from PTSD and other health issues.
We cannot do this alone. It takes a village to make this happen. Our
mission with Beverly Hills NORML90210.org is to gather our celebrity and
media contacts to produce a Public Service Announcement campaign to
educate the world about the need and benets of legalization.
Cheryl Shuman and Frederic Rhoades have worked together starting
a small farm in Northern California, where they hope to bring all their focus
and knowledge to the business of healing. Complying with the Attorney Gen-
eral guidelines of California they formed Shaman Therapeutics a Private
Non-Prot Medical Cannabis Collective that serves seriously ill patients in
both Northern and Southern California. This is an inspirational time in the history for Marijuana. Sometimes
one gets behind an issue because it sounds good, and just feels right. In the
case of Cheryl Shuman, its not just about ghting for personal freedoms,
but ghting for ones own vital lifeline. Its a shame that the stuffy political
side of this issue has swept into the very personal lives of people like Cheryl
Shuman, and countless others. Let us thank them for their never-ending
drive, determination, and strong will.
Thank you Cheryl for all your hard work. You are an inspiration to many,
and your efforts will continue.

LIFES A DREAM, SMOKE IT UP
Strain Review:
BLUE DREAMA high rom the Blue Dream strain makes you eel like youre up in the clouds. Above allthe BS in lie. Youre getting work done and making stu happen. Putting lie in motion.Living the dream, with nothing but clear blue skies ahead.
Blue Dream is a member o the sativa species o Cannabis. A sativa high tends to involvemore thinking, productivity, and increased energy in general. Signicant levels o painand nausea are usually also curbed. And while an indica strain will help you to relax, destress, chill out, and/or overcome insomnia, a pure sativa like this should inspireexercise, a deep conversation, or an ambitious todo list.
Fits o laughter and an overwhelming sense o well being are some other nice sideeects. (Why is this stu illegal again?)
Te physical characteristics o this strain consist o copious red hairs and crystals witha moderately sticky and dense eel. Te smell is pungent and dank, a smell that almostgives you a high on its own. Blue Dream is very sweet, both beore and aer ingestion. It has an undeniable ruitiness.
Te blue part o its name likely comes rom its partial roots in the blueberry strain.Dream is a somewhat odd choice o words, considering sleep is not oen a part othe package. Day dreaming was probably the inspiration. Alternatively, with an indicayoure likely to dream while sleeping, although you probably wont remember those
dreams upon awakening.
On the darker side o the Blue Dream, and sativa or that matter, many people becomeoverwhelmed with paranoia, anxiety, and an increased heart rate. Tis can be a bitrightening, but shouldnt last more than 1015 minutes. An indicas negatives wouldlikely point towards laziness, orgetulness, and a lack o motivation. Depending onwhat youre needing, these negatives can quickly become rereshing positives.
Marijuana is a persontoperson, situationtosituation, straintostrain experience.Your high will oen depend on the mental state, physical condition, and environmentyou bring to the table. And o course, ones genetic makeup and health are undeniableactors. But when everything is right and you know it, its alllll good... and you know it.
Overall a very pleasant experience is in store or the Blue Dream toker. It is a airly
cheap sativa, averaging around $45 or an eighth at most established dispensaries.

he perfect THC chocolate chip cookie is a round piec
of culinary heaven moist, chewy, and tasty. It has a b
of a kick, but that same chocolaty, gooey goodness yo
remember from childhood and continue to crave. Thbest part is that it makes you feel as good as it taste
creating an experience thats simultaneously delicious an
medicinal. Its the ideal big kid treat.
Creating the CookieWith a ew o our tips, the perect HC chocolate chip
cookie is easy to create, making it all that more perect. You wonthave to spend hours slaving away in the kitchen, which meansyou can spend more time enjoying the cookies eects. Beore youbake, preheat the oven to 350. o make the dough, you simply
mix together a package o yellow cake mix (yes, cake mix), 2 eggs, hal a cup o vegetable oil (or Smart Balance oil i youd like tohealth it up), and a package o chocolate chips, and then blend theingredients into a thick batter.
Adding the Special OilNow comes the tricky part, but dont ret because even the
tricky part isnt that tricky. You need to make the hemp oil (akathe un part) to add to the dough, but rst, you need to decidehow much weed to incorporate into the mix. I you have about a
joints worth, you can make a ew potent cookies, and a ew jointswill create about 4 cookies (and so on). Tereore, decide howmany green cookies youd like to make, and do the math (themost thinking youll do all day). Be mindul o how much budyou use to ensure you ingest the proper amount o cookies later.
ake the small pieces o weed and saut them in a tinybit o oil, just enough to adequately heat the bud to perection(brown and cooked, but not burnt). Tis should be done in asmall pot on low to medium heat. (Remember: you already added oil to the original mix, so keep the sauting oil to an extrememinimum to avoid oversaturating the dough.) Look at thedough to decipher how much will get used with the un oil.(Note: the batter makes around 2 and a hal to 3 dozen cookies.)Once the oil concoction is nice and ready, take the appropriateamount o dough and add it to the pot (literally). Toroughlymix the oil into the dough, ensuring it is evenly distributed andthat each green cookie will be equally stimulating.
Getting CreativeI youre eeling creative, you can add other goodies to the
cookies such as Reeses Pieces, M& Ms, nuts, coconut, or
anything else you can think o that would enhance the avorollow your cravings! I youre eeling extra adventurous, yocould even lace the chocolate chips and create a doubly eecticookie. You can melt some baking chocolate, add some bud buter, put the melted chocolate onto a cookie sheet (in small ballsthen put the tiny morsels in the ridge to harden.
Baking it UpOnce you have the dough evenly distributed on cook
sheets, and youre clear about which cookies are special anwhich ones arent (very important), bake them or about 81minutes, possibly longer depending on your oven (keep an eon them). Once the bottoms are golden brown, theyre ready be savored ... aer they cool o o course.
Eating & Enjoying the CookieAlthough the laced cookies taste delicious and youre g
ing to want to gobble them right up, remember how much weeyou put into them, and weigh the amount against your toleance while youre munching away. Ten, be patient and give thcookie time to work its magic; this high takes around an hoand a hal to become ully induced.
At rst, your unbuzzed mind may tell you to eat more, bignore its gluttonous pleas, because you know how much yocan handle and an overindulgence will come back to haunt yo
(not un). However, the right amount will give you a ull bodhigh, heightening your senses and elevating your state o minAnd, remember the plethora o regular cookies you whipped uin this process? Tey will taste better than ever right now! (Bsure you have some milk on hand.)
Tis glorious intoxication will last or hours, so try to eand share the cookies early in the day. Ten, enjoy your journto Pleasureland, where everything is humorous and relaxinand lie is, well, sweet.

CHASINGMULHOLLAND
By J. MARK SERNBERG
Sometimes, its hard to spot history in Los Angeles. Te old is so ofen thrown away
or the cleaner and saer, or even just the new and improved. One has to look hard at the
tarmac in the Hollywood Hills with a pair o nostalgic eyes to see the glory days gone by.
AND AT THE VERY TOP IS
8/9/2019 Kush Magazine / Southern California / Feb-2010
73/100kush 7
Once upon a time these hill roads were dominated by a groupo passionate, misunderstood people. Te reedom sought by the
Mulholland Drive racers isnt as tangible as that o a surer, or any
other o Caliornias well embraced traditions. For better or worse,
this is the pastime o the shunned and, at times, the prosecuted.
Built in 1924, Mulholland Drive was billed as a gi to Los Angeles.
In reality, the road was built with the same intention as much as the
rest o LA; to make some real estate prospectors rich. Te plan was to
connect LA to the San Fernando Valley, and sell houses in between.
Te idea was solid, but, early on, nobody who invested really stood to
make any sort o money o o the deal.
Mulholland did live up to its original billing though. Originally
made out o dirt, it was a motoring enthusiasts dream with beautiul
vistas and enigmatic bends. Even in the early days, there were stories
o people like Gary Cooper ravaging the Drive in his supercharged
Duesenberg aer a long days work at the studio.
Te road, however, wouldnt reach its legendary status until the
1940s. Aer World War II, the mechanics returned home with
newound knowledge o the internal combustion engine, and
opinions on how to improve it. Hotrodding, at least as a acet o
American pop culture, was born.
Racing on Mulholland hit its peak rom the 1960s through the1980s. Back then racers and ans alike would come out aer sundown
and race through the hills. Te rules were simple; because overtaking
was too dangerous on the narrow public road, one car would start
in ront o the other, i one car could pull away rom the other, that
car was the winner. Night aer night or years, LAs amateur racers
would come out to prove who was astest, just or the hell o it.
Tere were serious drivers too. Proessional racing drivers based
out o LA were said to have taken their race cars out or laps around
Mulholland or quick shakedowns when the racetracks were too ar,
or too expensive. James Dean and Steve McQueen also amously
used to hone their skills there.
Each generation o canyon racers had its own cliques and ro
stars. Tere are stories o one Porsche 911 pilot who would drink
complete excess, than rip through the course with savage abando
throwing empty beer cans at slower racers as he shot by.
Some o the stories are sure to have been embellished over th
years, but that adds to the mystique o it all too.
In the 1980s, the scene became a victim o its own success. With t
notoriety the racers had earned over the years came popularity an
unwanted attention. Amateurs would come out and push themselv
beyond their limits with more and more regularity. Te scene becam
excessively unsae, even by streetracing standards.
Pairing the growing number o accidents with advancements
technology (and, o course, Ralph Nader), a police crackdown w
inevitable. Tere have been more than a ew over the years; one, t
cleverly named Operation Sae Canyons, was as recent as 2005.
oday the road has allen into disrepair. Large cracks in the concre
are tough on cars with sporty suspensions. rac has become
problem too; the road is oen cluttered with star map clutchin
tourists, and people just trying to commute rom their houses.
Go out at night or on a weekend and you might spot a dedicate
corps who still head out to put their cars through their paces o
Caliornias most notorious canyon road. Tey are the truly afictwho stuck it out through the popularity surge that came rom t
Te Fast and the Furious movies and the driing craze.
In that, the road almost becomes a perect metaphor or LA as
whole. Marred by overpopulation and general government neglect
sits as a shell o glory days gone by, preserved in the actions o t
passionate enthusiast; reliving the glory days o a past lietime.

he other day I was browsing through my e-mail,
and I came upon a discussion between two
very active members of the Medicinal Use
Community. I got caught up with one of them
acting like he was a Father concerned for his
child. The other author continued with the discussion by adding
that although not a Forefather, he felt as though he owed it to the
Movement to keep an eye open for those deals and dealers that
were too good to be true, and, who were more a detriment then
asset.
Please allow me to introduce myself; I am a man of no wealth
and a little fame. I was the rst person in Orange County, and in
Southern California for that matter, to be arrested, tried, convicted,
(using Proposition 215 as a defense) and sentenced to four years
in state prison for using marijuana as medicine. After spending 29
months incarcerated, I had my conviction reversed by the Fourth
District Court of Appeal for Prosecutorial Misconduct with Tacit
Judicial Approval. But there is more to the story then just my
trial, since it involves the early history of Prop 215 as well as
the Movement in Orange County, Los Angeles County, and all
points south of Fresno and north of Mexico.
You see there was the northern contingent and the southern
contingent, which was all held toge
