    Kuta Weekly News Corner26 July - 1 Aug 2012 (295)

day again readers and here we go again. All but most of the toureyshave left for the cooler climate of home and will be getting the kids backGinto the routine of school again. The holiday which was so anticipated

and which cost the family a heap of savings, is all but a memory now, leaving the island to us expats and the few travellers that stayed for a fewextra days. I'll bet a few credit cards are maxed out at the moment as dadsets back off to work to square it up ready for the next Griswold familyadventure. Rock on for a Bali Christmas..

I see it's been a busy week around the world with the craziest thingshappening for no apparent reason. I see a young intellect in America decided that he was the Joker and would goand act out some weird fantasy in a cinema un-be-known to everyone e lse, he has set about shooting as manypeople as he could until his gun breached and he was stopped by some brave person. From what I can gather anoff duty security guard stopped him before he could do anymore harm, or so it would seem, until the police went tohis house to search for a motive or gather a definite reason for the act, only to find that his house had been boobytrapped ready for their arrival. I ask you this while you read, what on earth drives a person to actually dosomething like this?? Was he beaten as a child?? Did he miss out on something so he decided to shooteveryone?? What the f*!@k runs through some people's minds? Anyways a big hug goes out to the families ofthe cinema goers who it seems were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Remember, guns don't shoot people, people shoot people.

Moving along this week the Brits have the Olympics all but done and seem to be ready for the major influx ofvisitors. If I was a gambling man id say the pound and the Euro would be about as bought as possible at themoment and if I was dealing in foreign exchange I would be opening a position as soon as possible to take pro fiton that spike. The 2012 Summer Olympic Games are being held from 27 July to 12 August. Around 10,500athletes representing 204 nations and territories are competing in 302 events covering 26 sports at what isofficially known as The Games of the XXX Olympiad.

People from all over the world are visiting London for the Olympics, and they'll be among over 500,000 spectatorsexpected to attend. Over 9,000,000 seating tickets have been sold, with prices ranging from around $30 forstandard seats at regular events to around $3,000 for the best seats at the July 27 Opening Ceremony. I don'tbelieve that covers the Para-Olympics either. A great time to be in the British Isles.Lastly this week I will direct your focus to a story that we are running this week about the fake brand gear that isreadily available here. It seems the owners of the franchises or brand names, within Indonesia, not just Bali, havegotten together and decided that the loss was great enough to make a formal complaint to the powers that be andafter exhaustive investigations were carried out by Intel, they have arrested 27 shop owners that deal in nothingbut counterfeit brand name stuff, eg, caps, shirts, belts, etc etc. I guess after coming here for so long you get torealize that this merchandise is always very very inferior to the real m coy and can usually be spotted a mile awayas a fake, but, the fun that I've had buying some of it in the years gone by, in so far as the deadly seriousnegotiations between me and the market vendor are some of the best t imes I've had here as a tourist. Arguing for10 cents seemed so important that it was ridiculous.

I guess retrospectively speaking if I owned a major brand name and was here on holidays and saw the amount offake stuff that was being sold, I would hit the roof. We aren't talking small change now, we are into some serious

coin, so I guess it's time things changed. The funny thing is, there are a few Australian brands amongst the classaction that has been filed. I think the powers that be are actually changing Bali for the better and are doing a greatjob at it. You can check out the story on page 2 this week. Thanks again to Bali Discovery.comI am happy to get any feedback from readers that are keen to express their opinion on the subject of fake gearthat is sold in Bali, so please email me at [email protected] punters my time for the week is up, as the boss wants to eat after 6.00pm and is banging on the door lookingfor the contribution. I'd like to wish all our Muslim friends a happy month of reflection and giving (Ramadhan ken,Ramadhan) and hope the most of you stay safe, happy, healthy and always remember, If opportunity doesn'tknock, build a door.

    Enjoy your week,

Odd appearance by Colorado shooting suspectWith his hair dyed orange, eyesstaring out blankly or droopingshut, presumed Colorado gunmanJames Holmes seemed unhingedMonday as he made a bizarre firstappearance in court.

Holmes is accused of shootingdead 12 people and wounding 58

others at a cinema Friday in Aurora, outside Denver, as young moviegoerspacked the first midnight screening ofthe latest Batman film, "The DarkKnight Rises."

Wearing a maroon prisonjumpsuit, the 24-year-old graduateschool dropout didn't speak as lawyersread out a list of accusationsduring the short proceduralhearing at Arapahoe CountyDistrict Court in the town ofCentennial.

Holmes, a former PhDcandidate in neuroscience, appeared unable to followproceedings as his head bobbedup and down and he alternatedbetween staring out wild-eyedand closing his eyes shut as ifdrugged or in a daze.

It was not known if he wason some kind of medication andthere was no indication when theyoung man accused of one ofAmerica's worst-ever massshootings might undergo psychiatricevaluation.

Holmes is expected to face 12murder charges, 58 attempted murdercharges for those he wounded, andadditional charges related to hisbooby-trapped apartment at a secondappearance next Monday when he willenter a plea.

Prosecutors expect weeks ofconsultations with families of thevictims before deciding whether or notto seek the death penalty.

"We will want to get their inputbefore we make any decision on that,"said Arapahoe county district attorneyCarol Chambers. "If the death penaltyis sought, that is a very long processthat impacts their lives for years."

Only one person has beenexecuted in Colorado since 1976.

Denver attorney and legalcommentator Scott Robinson said thatin his view lawyers for Holmes "havelittle choice except to enter a plea ofnot guilty by reason of insanity."

    Holmes gave himself up outside

the cinema, still clad in the bodyarmor witnesses described thegunman wearing inside, but Chamberssaid a successful prosecution wasn't adone deal.

"It is a case where we are stilllooking at the enormous amount ofevidence, and we would neverpresume it is slam dunk," she toldreporters, adding that an insanity pleawould make the case last a year ormore.

Holmes was ordered to remainin Arapahoe County jail, where he isbeing held in solitary confinement, withno bail allowed.

The gunman emerged from afire exit on Friday shortly after the filmbegan and threw two canisters ofnoxious gas into the auditorium.

After firing one round directlyinto the air with a pump-actionshotgun, he began shooting people atrandom with a military-style assaultrifle that could dispatch 50 to 60 roundsa minute, witnesses said.

    N e w Y o r k C i t y P o l i c eCommissioner Ray Kelly said Holmeshad painted his hair reddish orange

and claimed he was the Joker,Batman's sworn enemy in the comicbook series that inspired the movie.

According to reports and atleast one witness, the gunman mighthave killed more people had hisassault rifle not jammed.

Police said Sunday they hadfound Holmes's computer inside hisbooby-trapped apartment -- rigged tokill anyone who entered -- which couldprovide crucial details about how heplanned and executed the attack.

    Calls to re-examine US gun

laws mounted as it emergedthat Holmes bought his four weaponslegally, as well as thousands of roundsof ammunition on the Internet.

Over eight weeks he stockedup on 6,300 rounds of ammunition:3,000 for his .233 semi-automatic AR-15 rifle, another 3,000 for his twoGlock pistols, and 300 cartridges forhis pump-action shotgun.

President Barack Obama paidemotional tribute to the victims andsurvivors of the Aurora cinemamassacre as he visited the town onSunday.

At an event for US veterans inReno, Nevada, Obama repeatedparticular condolences for fourpeople killed who had served inthe military.

"These young patriotswere willing to serve in farawaylands, yet they were taken fromus here at home," he said.

As campaigning ahead ofthe November election gearedup again, Obama's Republicanchallenger Mitt Romney stressed

that now was not the time todiscuss new gun legislation.

"Our challenge is not thelaws, our challenge is peoplewho, obviously, are distractedfrom reality and do unthinkable,

    unimaginable, inexplicable things,"Romney said.

The fact Holmes chose not tokill himself, or to engage in adesperate shoot-out with police, "doesseem an odd component of thisp a r t i c u la r c a s e , " s a id A l le nMcConnell, a psychology professor atMiami University in Ohio.

"His being alive might providesome insights" into the web ofcircumstances that can potentiallylead someone to carry out a mass

killing, he told AFP.Separately, "The Dark Knight

Rises" movie had the third largestopening weekend ever.

The movie earned $160.9million in its first three days, accordingto Exhibitor Relations, which tracksticket sales, only behind openingweekend grosses for "The Avengers"and the final Harry Potter movie,"Harry Potter and the DeathlyHallows, Part 2."

The panel of judges ruledthat the news published by TheBali Post on September 19, 2011under the headline Governor:Dismantle the TraditionalVillages was inappropriate and

The actions of the BaliPost that indicated the governorof Bali would dismantle thetradit ional vi l lages (desa

(Khe Sanh)This is an Australian song, released as a 45 rpm single in May 1978, namedafter the Battle of Khe Sanh (1968) during the Vietnam War. The song, performed by Cold Chisel, having been written by pianist Don Walker and

featuring the vocals of Jimmy Barnes, is about an Australian Vietnam veterandealing with his return to civilian life. According to Toby Creswell's liner notesfor the band's 1991 compilation album Chisel, the song is also a story ofrestless youth. The mood of the song is typified by its first verse. The remaining verses describe the singer's aimless drifting after his return toAustralia: womanizing, post traumatic stress disorder, addiction to speed andNovocain, getting work on oil rigs and flying helicopters. He has travelled theworld: "I've been back to South East Asia but the answer sure aint there". Thefinal refrain is "Well the last plane out of Sydney's almost gone", as the singerheads to Hong Kong for casual sex.Don Walker has said the song was inspired by a number of people, i ncluding,"the guy from the next farm," who came back from Vietnam, "severelychanged for the worst," and Adelaide guitarist Rick Morris. The first draft waswritten in Sweethearts Cafe in Kings Cross, New South Wales."Khe Sanh" is one of the most popular songs ever recorded by an Australianact and one generally seen as a resonant symbol of the Australian culture. The record reached number four in the band's home town of Adelaide butpeaked on the national sales charts at number 41. In August 1978, censorsgave it an A Classification, meaning that it was "not suitable for airplay",because of sex and drug references, such as the lines: "their legs were oftenopen, but their minds were always closed". Barnes later commented "Every

DJ in the country begged us to release "Khe Sanh" as a single. Then theybanned it two weeks later. They had to ban something once a week to keepthe Catholic Church happy." A single station in Adelaide defied thiscensorship, and was the catalyst of the song's popularity. In 2001, members of APRA, the Australasian music industry's peak body, put"Khe Sanh" at number eight in a poll of the all-time best Australian songs It stillreceives strong airplay on Australian radio stations with a "classic rock"format. In August 2011, "Khe Sanh" re-entered the ARIA Singles Chart at #40,beating their previous peak position by one spot. Two versions of "Khe Sanh" were released by Cold Chisel. The first featuredon the band's 1978 debut self-titled album. A second version was i ncluded onthe international version of the 1980 album East The newer version overlaida new keyboard track over Ian Moss's slide guitar break and featured aslightly different vocal reading from Barnes.

Ramadhan & Lebaran in BaliIdul Fitri, more commonly referred to inIndonesia as Lebaran, is the celebration thatcomes at the end of the Muslim month offasting, Ramadhan. The Arabic meaning ofIdul Fitri is becoming holy again.

The dates of the ninth month of the Muslimcalendar, Ramadan, vary from year to year, as theMuslim calendar (Hijrah) is based on a lunar cycle of29 or 30 days. The exact date is determined by thesighting of the new moon. These lunar calculationslead to an official announcement by the governmenton the eve of Ramadanand Idul Fitri so that thefaithful know when to beginand end the fasting month. In 2012, Ramadan startedon July 20th and Lebaranwill fall on 19-20 August, with "collective leave" on21-22 August.

To understand thesignificance of Lebaran, an

understanding about thef a s t i n g m o n t h o fRamadhan is important.During the month ofRamadhan, Muslims mustrefrain from eating, drinking, smoking, maritalrelations or getting angry during the daylight hours. In addition, those fasting are supposed to refrainfrom bad habits - lying, getting angry, using badlanguage as well as to be more diligent in prayer andgive to charities. It is believed that fasting heightensspirituality and develops self-control.

The fast begins in the morning just beforesunrise, at Imsak, and is broken at maghrib whichfalls at sunset. Fasting during the month ofRamadhan is one of the five pillars of Islam and anobligation for devout Muslims.

Those who are expected to fast include:adults (defined as those who have reached the ageof puberty) and those who are sane. Those who arenot expected to fast include: children, womenhaving their period, travellers, the sick, those withlong-term illnesses, pregnant or breastfeedingwomen and the mentally ill.

The faithful who fast awaken early in themorning to have a meal before subuh. In order toawaken the faithful, the call to prayer is soundedfrom neighbourhood mosques. In addition, groupsof young boys walk around neighbourhoods beating

on drums and other noise makers to awakenthe faithful (and their neighbours) yelling out "sahur, sahur".

The breaking of the fast at sunset is a verysocial occasion for which special foods are prepared

for gatherings with family or friends. Upon hearingthe sound of the bedug drum on the television or thecall to prayer from the neighbourhood mosque atsunset, the faithful know it's time to break their fast, orbuka puasa. This is usually done with a very sweetdrink and sweet snacks. Maghrib prayers are made

before a full meal is served.Taraweh congregationalp rayers a re he ld inneighbourhood mosquesand at gatherings everyevening at about 7:30 p.m.These prayers are notcompulsory, but they areenjoyed by many.

The schedule forImsak and Maghrib is

    p o s t e d i n m a j o rnewspapers and on thetelevision throughoutIndonesia, as well aspublished in handouts by

major religious organizations. While it is expected that people will keep to

their normal activities during the fast, needless to saythe lack of liquid and food during the day and theunusual sleep and meal schedule soon take their toll. After the first week you may see that sleep and fooddeprivation cause those fasting to have reducedenergy levels as well as finding it more difficult toconcentrate on tasks.

Why does Islam oblige its followers to fastduring Ramadhan each year?

To develop compassion for the poor and

needy who feel hungry every day.As a spiritually and physically cleansing

experience. Just as in other world religions, fasting isseen as an opportunity to separate yourself from thethings of this world and to concentrate on yourrelationship with God.

To become closer to God by contemplatinghis will in your life.

To build self-discipline and to become abetter person.

through and clubs haveobviously got their priorities withtheir signings," he said.

"It's well known that StKilda have a lot of players out ofcontract currently and I think, justin terms of that, it takes a while togo through the process and thedue diligence."

Goddard denied any of thediscussions throughout the club

would affect the team asthey battled to keep in touch withthe top eight.

    " I d o n ' t t h i n k t h ecircumstances that I'm in at themoment is affecting the footyteam. Every player has to dealwith it.

    "I think I'm experienced

Greater Western Sydneyis thought to be one clubpart icularly interested inGoddard but there is virtually nochance he will consider anyoffer.

Goddard's best seasonwas in 2010 when the Saintsmade the grand final for thesecond straight year.

He averaged more than28 possessions a game thatseason but, although not puttingup such gaudy numbers thisterm, Goddard believes he nowcontributes in other ways.

"Obviously, I'm not havingthe impact on games that I'vehad in the past, or (had) really

standout games," he added."But I think I've contributed

well in different areas that I haven'tin the past. I actually feel like I ammaking other players better."

Alonso pulls away to win in GermanyFernando Alonso led frompole position to chequeredflag to win the GermanGrand Prix for Ferrariovernight, while Germany'sF o r m u l a O n e w o r l dchampion Sebastian Vettel

was stripped of secondplace for an overtakinginfringement.

    A u s t r a l i a ' s M a r kWebber failed to repeat hisrecent British Grand Prixheroics, finishing well back inthe pack in eighth place.

The Spaniard's thirdwin of the season stretched hischampionship lead to 34points and ensured he will stayon top through the Europeansummer break which startsafter next weekend's race inHungary.

Race officials said thatVettel left the track as he

passed McLaren's JensonButton on the penultimate lapin a controversial move.

Vettel, who has yet towin his home grand prix andindeed any race in July, wentwide as he and the Briton wentthrough a corner side by side.He was handed a 20 secondpenalty that demoted him tofifth.

Button moved up tosecond place, ending a run ofdisappointing performances, and Finland's 2007 worldchampion Kimi Raikkonen took thirdfor Lotus.

Vettel was still the bestGerman performer on an unhappy

    day for home fans. Seven-timesw o r l d c h a m p i o n M i c h a e lSchumacher finished seventh forMercedes while Nico Hulkenberg,after starting alongside Schumacheron the second row of the grid,dropped back through the field tofinish ninth for Force India.

    He was one place ahead ofc o m p a t r i o t N i c o R o s b e r g ,Schumacher's Mercedes team-mate.

    Alonso's win was Ferrari's

    219th and the 30th of theSpaniard's career.

"That was fantastic again, pole position ...victory." he told histeam after taking the chequered flag.

"Tonight we have someparties at least."

    The Ferrari driver has 154

points to 120 for Red Bull's Webber.Vettel has 110 after 10 of the season's20 races.

    Champions Red Bull lead the

    constructors' standings with 230points to Ferrari's 177 and McLaren's160.

Button's podium finish was aboost for McLaren, who moved aheadof Lotus in the standings, but it wassoured for the team by LewisHamilton suffering a puncture early inhis 100th race and having to retire.

Alonso started on pole andheld off challenges from Vettel andthen Button as he stormed to victory inwarm, sunny conditions, a starkcontrast from the heavy rain which fellduring practice and qualifying.

Intense pressureAlonso, who won on the last

occasion a Grand Prix was staged at

Hockenheim two years ago, briefly surrendered his lead after thefirst of his two pit stops but the doublechampion otherwise dominated therace despite being under intensepressure throughout.

Alonso praised the timing's ofhis pit stops. "The team took a few

strategic decisions which were spoton," he said."It was a very close race from

start to finish. We did not have thequickest car. McLaren andRed Bull had a little bit extrabut not enough to get past."

Webber, winner of theprevious race at Silverstone, had started eighth after a fiveplace demotion on the startinggrid for an unauthorisedgearbox change.

"We had a decentrace today although therewasn't enough pace when wegot close to Fernando," saidVettel.

    Referr ing to the

overtaking, he said: "The onlyintention was not to crash andto give him enough room. Ihave respect for him and didn'twant to squeeze him.

"It was good to be onthe podium at the home race, but I have respect for thestewards' decision.

    R e d B u l l t e a mprincipal Christian Horner hadsaid before the decision wasannounced that a penalty forVettel would be "very harsh",describing it as "a racing

    incident."McLaren's Martin Whitmarsh

said the rules were clear: "You can'tdrive off the track and gain an

advantage and overtake."That's the normal rules of

motor racing. We're in the heat ofbattle and the stewards are the bestpeople to look at that."

Vettel was also angry withHamilton for trying to overtake himwhile one lap behind.

"That was not nice of him, Idon't see we he's trying to race us, itsstupid to disturb the leaders," said theGerman, who gesticulated at theMcLaren as it went past and said the

Kangas down Tigers in classic at the 'GNorth Melbourne coach BradScott was unable to containhis emotions after theKangaroos finally clinched ac l o s e g a m e a g a i n s tRichmond at the MCG onSunday.

    In a spirited, see-sawing thriller, a five-goall a s t q u a r t e r f r o minspirational spearheadDrew Petrie drove theKangaroos to a 15.13(103) to 14.15 (99)victory.

North's fifth win insix games lifted them intothe top eight, leaving theTigers two games adriftand all but out of the finalsrace.

For Scott, whoseside had lost three previousmatches this season by two

points, the Kangaroos' ability toho ld on was enormouslyencouraging.

"There was some genuineelation in that today," Scott said.

"We'd lost some closegames, so if you ever get a shot ofthe (coaches) box, we lost the plotthere when the siren went."

Scott said while he had notfelt his side had an underlyingissue in their narrow losses,

Sunday's win was a big step."You make mis takes

throughout the whole game but wewere starting to stack them up atthe end of games," he said.

"So the ability to withstandthe pressure, we're really proud of

    our leadership."Earlier, the Kangaroos had

led by as many as 22 points in thesecond term, helped by Richmondgiving away consecutive goalsfrom 50 metre penalties.

But a five-goals-to-two thirdquarter from the Tigers, in whichJack Riewoldt and Dustin Martin, returning from a club-imposedsuspension, kicked two goalseach, put them seven points infront at the last change.

    Then Petrie, kept to two

goals in the first three termsby Alex Rance, took centre stage.

    H e m a r k e d a l m o s teverything that came his way tokick five goals in the first 22minutes of the last term.

Substitute Matt Campbellthen snapped truly to put

the Kangaroos 17 pointsclear at the 25-minutemark and seeminglyhome.

But the Tigers keptcoming, speedstersRobin Nahas and ShaneEdwards notching quickgoals, before ShaunGrigg missed with a snapthat could have givenRichmond the lead with57 seconds left, theKangaroos holding firmin the frenzied final

    seconds.It was Richmond's fifth loss

by two goals or less this season, apattern coach Damien Hardwicksaid showed the side is improving, but not fast enough for their liking.

He refused to give up on atop-eight finish.

"Once the door is shut, itshuts," he said.

"But as far as we'reconcerned it's well and truly stillopen."

Finding it hard to keepup the passion in a longdistance relationship?Help might be on theway.

    A robotics professor

    Shaped like a smallhead w i t h overs i zes i l i c o n e l i p s , t h e'Kissenger' short for Kiss Messengerwas unveiled in June at a scientificconference in Britain and is still beingrefined for commercial launch.

    'It can be used betweenh u m a n s t o i m p r o v e t h e i rcommunication,' its creator HoomanSamani said.

    Couples just have to connect

the devices to computers viaUSB cables, link up online and startkissing the silicone material to triggersensors that move the gadget on theother side.

They can stare at each other onscreen while exchanging kisses.

'The main issue is to transmitthe force and pressure, and also theshape of the lip,' Samani said.

The 'special silicone material'chosen for the lips offers 'the bestsensation and feeling', said the

    scientist, who has personally tested

the device. But the Kissenger is not yet

ready for the market despite 'a lot ofoffers' from interested partiesbecause there are 'ethical issues' thatneed to be resolved on top of the

The device is still beingrefined at a laboratory jointlyset up by the National

Wests Tigers halfback Benji Marshall given until lastminute to prove fitness to face South Sydney

WESTS Tigers starhalfback Benji Marshallwill be given until theweekend to recover forSunday's crunch clashwith South Sydney after

hurting his toe andthumb during a horrorinjury night for the Tigersin North Queensland.

Marshall was hobblingaround and had a strappedhand today and coach TimSheens confirmed he would give hisstar half the rest of the week off toensure he was ready to face thethird-placed Rabbitohs.

With starting five-eighth CurtisSironen also ruled out with ashoulder injury, Sheens said hewould be scraping to find Marshall apartner in the halves.

"I think so (Marshall will playagainst Souths), but he might not rununtil Saturday," Sheens said.

"It's always an issue thengetting the team dynamic back andI'm going to have to find another half,five-eighth to pair with him which isthe umpteenth we've used this year.

"People are thinking I'll play(Robbie) Farah there but I'm unlikelyto because it's weakening the nine.

"Masada (Iosefa) went verywell at nine but Robbie Farah's oneof the dominant nines in the game soI don't want to take him out of there if Ican help it.

"I need to try and findsomeone who will last the six weeksuntil the play-offs."

The halfback's injury took theTigers' toll to six from the 29-16 lossto the Cowboys, with Tim Moltzeninjuring his hamstring in the warm-upand four other players taken tohospital.

Sironen will visit a specialiston his return to Sydney to assesswhether he has stretched theligaments in the shoulder he hadreconstructed in 2011.

"Whether we can rehab it andwhether or not it's a six to eight-weekrehab or whether he plays again thisyear will depend on how we go orwhether or not we keep him for next

season - that's going to be thedecision," Sheens said.

Chris Lawrence (up to a monthwith a high ankle sprain), Ben Murdoch-Masila (up to two weeks with a rolledankle) and Matt Groat (U20s, brokenthumb) all ended the night in thecasualty ward.

Sheens said Moltzen could alsomiss a fortnight with his ongoing hipflexor and hamstring problems.

The injuries come afortnight after the Tigers lostdual-international wingerLote Tuqiri for the remainderof the season with a brokenarm while the Tigers are alsonot expecting prop Keith

Galloway to return until theround-23 clash with StGeorge-Illawarra.

In addition to the injuryconcerns, the eighth-placedTigers missed a goldenopportunity to create some

    b r e a t h i n g s p a c e b e t w e e nthemselves and the five finalscontenders sitting one win behindthem.

The Warriors, Gold Coast,Newcastle, Canberra and theDragons sit within touching distanceof the top eight as the Tigers havewon just one of their past fivematches.

Mick Stone who has said having tworeferees on the field hasn' t worked and it hashampered decision making and thedevelopment of referees.

Toovey also said the two refereessystem was something that needed to bereviewed.

"Although I think I saw (NRL director of

football) Nathan McGuirk said the other dayit wouldn't be, it would be nice to beconsulted on it," Toovey said.

Manly coach Geoff Toovey says the NRL islikely to make significant changes to theobstruction rule for the 2013 seasonfollowing widespread criticism andconfusion this year.

Toovey launched a blistering attack on the refereeing

ranks following the Sea Eagles' loss to Canterbury lastFriday night and said he had since been in touch with NRLofficials, including referees' coaches Bill Harrigan and StuartRaper.

The pair indicated important changes would be madeto the obstruction rule in consultation with players andcoaches for next season.

"They have indicated, the powers that be, that they arelooking forward to listening to what the players and coacheshave to say," Toovey said on Tuesday.

"Obviously, there are some rules that need to beclarified, I think, and the players and the coaches are allconfused when it comes to the obstruction rule."

Bulldogs coach Des Hasler's use of decoy runners hasbecome a hot topic of debate in the lead-up to the finalsseries.

Former Parramatta and South Sydney coach Jason

Taylor has been critical of both the Bulldogs and NorthQueensland for what he perceived to be illegal plays, whileJustin Hodges' try in the final State of Origin game - whichwas awarded despite the fact he had run behind one of hisown players to score - remains one of the most confusingdecisions of the season.

"There has to be some change at the end of the year,"Toovey said.

Storm expect Slater returnMelbourne Storm's bidto end their wretchedrun of form should beboosted by the returnof Billy Slater thisweekend.

The Maroons full-backhas been out of action for sixweeks after injuring his knee inthe second State of Originmatch.

During this time theStorm have lost five straightgames, including to lowlyParramatta last weekend, andbeen usurped from a seeminglyunassailable position at the topof the ladder by the Bulldogs.

The Storm travel to face StGeorge Illawarra on Friday nightand coach Craig Bellamy expectslast season's Dally M player of theyear to be in his line-up.

    "He should be right this

week, see how he goes attraining but we're confident he'll getup," Bellamy said.

Bellamy is disappointed hisclub has not dealt better with theirinjury problems, admitting: "ourattack was rubbish on the

    weekend."

"All teams go throughinjury concerns and weneed to cope with that.Outside backs have been aconcern.

"We know the resultswill come if we perform well,we just need to do thatcause they haven't beenwhere they should be."

The Dragons, whoare awaiting medical adviceon the status of Dean Youngfollowing his concussionthis weekend, will bewithout centre Mattt Cooperwho picked up a hamstringinjury during the costly loss
