Directorate of Distance Education

Offering higher education through DistanceEducation is an important step taken by KuvempuUniversity in order to help student community intheir zeal for pursuing higher studies. KuvempuUniversity introduced Distance EducationProgrammes from the academic year 2002, aftertaking approval to its Statutes from theGovernment of Karnataka as also from theChancellor, the Governor of Karnataka. Within ashort time, the Directorate of Distance Education(DDE) of KU has earned a reputation across thecountry for systematic & timely delivery of need-based courses to students. The University believesthat Distance Education is an equally good avenueto be made available to interested students. The

degrees offered by the Directorate of DistanceEducation are equivalent to that of regular degrees. The Directorate of Distance Education (DDE) isnow offering more than 50 Courses in variousfaculties at the UG, PG and PG-Diploma levels. These programmes of Kuvempu Universityhave now been recognized by DistanceEducation Council (DEC). New Delhi.

Fully-ComputerisedExamination BranchThe examination branch of the University is totallycomputerized. This has helped not only inmaintaining transparency and fairness but also indeclaring the results promptly and accurately. Thefollowing is an extract from the comments of theNAAC Committee about the examination systemat KU: “The University, in its attempt tomodernise its functioning, has computerizedthe examination system and trained itsemployees in computer application. Theinnovations like use of photographs, holograms and lamination in the Marks Cards, etc, are commendable practices which canbe emulated by other Universities.”

Collaborative ArrangementThe KU has launched distance educationprogrammes in Information Technology incollaboration with Universal Education Trust(UET), Bangalore, from the academic year2005, for the benefit of all the aspirants. NIIThas also entered into a tripartite agreement withKU & UET to promote and offer the IT-coursesthrough its selected & approved Study Centres.

Self-instructional Course MaterialDistance education simply means imparting educationfrom a distance. In this system of education the teacherand the student are physically separated. The salientfeatures of instruction in distance education include thefollowing : Students are supplied with printed materialwritten in a self-instructional mode (SIM). CourseMaterial is specially designed by a team of experts fromindustries, Faculty from leading Technical Institutionsand in-house Faculty of the University. The designedCurriculum is subjected to strict scrutiny by the ContentExperts and experienced Professors before adoption bythe University.

Academic CounsellingCounselling is an important activity in distanceeducation. It is totally different from conventionalclassroom teaching. Counsellors at Study Centres answerthe students’ questions in these sessions besides clarifyingtheir doubts and help them overcome difficulties whichthey may face while going through the text. TheseCounselling Sessions also give students an opportunityto interact with other students.

AssignmentsAssignments are an integral component of distanceeducation. Assignments serve the purpose of evaluationof the student’s comprehension of the subjects. Thelocal Counsellors of the Study Centres evaluate theseassignments & also provide feedback on the student’sperformance. A copy of the evaluated assignments willbe shown to the student by the Co-ordinator as part ofthe learning activity.

PracticalsDepending upon the subject, an optimum amount ofPracticals in the form of Computer Laboratory trainingis also imparted to students at the Study Centres underthe supervision of qualified faculty.

Project ReportThe student must also prepare a Project Report as partof the Curriculum requirements of B.Sc.(ITIM) coursesand submit the same at the end of the final Semesterfor assessment and evaluation.

Support Services through Study CentresStudy Centres are being set up across the country to provide thestudents with a platform to interact with Counsellors and otherstudents and also for Practical Laboratory instruction and for useof the Library. Students would be getting personal attention andguidance at these Centres in addition to hands-on training oncomputers while doing practicals at their Study Centres.

Programme DeliveryA multi-form of instruction has been adopted, comprising of :

a) Study Material : Study material for all subjects are suppliedin the form of Printed Books.

b) Counselling Sessions : Will be held at Study Centres tosuit the convenience of the students, which are generallyplanned during weekends.

c) Practical Sessions : Will also be held at the Study Centres.A set of Practical Exercises are given to students throughthe Study Centres to work upon.

d) Theory Assignments : For assessment, evaluation andfor feed-back on comprehension of study material.A set of two Official Assignments for each subject is givento students through the Study Centres.

e) Project Work : To enable the student of B.Sc.(ITIM) courseto gain an insight to independent working on a practicalProject.

Credit SystemThe University follows the ‘Credit System’ for B.Sc.(ITIM). EachCredit entails approximately 30 hours of study comprising ofall activities. Thus, a 3-Credit course involves 90 study hourscomprising of all activities. This helps the student to understandthe academic effort he/she has to put in suitably to complete thecourse.

The Grade SystemFor each Subject and Semester, Grade System as given in thetable below is adopted for declaration of results.

For each subject, both Marks and gradeswill be awarded in the Marks Card. Fora semester, where the candidate has passedin all the subjects, an Overall Grade will beawarded based on the average percentage ofmarks in the semester. Also, for the awardof Certificates, Diplomas and Degrees,an Overall Grade will be awarded basedon the overall percentage of marks ofthe eligible semesters, viz. 4th, 5th & 6th ofB.Sc.(ITIM).

Instructional SystemThe methodology of instruction in DistanceEducation is different from that of theconventional system. The DistanceEducation is more learner-oriented, somuch so, the student has to be invariablya pro-active participant in the teaching-learning process. Most of the instructionsare imparted through distance rather thanface-to-face communication. The DDEfollows a multiple approach for instruction, using a suitable combination of thefollowing:

a) Self-instructional Printed Material.

b) Audio and Video Cassettes.

c) CDs.

d) Audio-Video programmes transmittedthrough Radio and Doordarshan

e) Website information.

f ) Face-to-face counselling at Study Centresby Academic Counsellors.

g) Practical hands-on training.

h) Assignments.

i) Field-based Projects.

To start with, the courses will be deliveredthrough printed Study Material, CDs andInternet through the conventional distanceeducation mode. In due course, it will shiftmore and more towards on-line interactionbetween teacher and the taught. Practical

skill and dexterity will be the main focus right from thebeginning through interactive Laboratory exercises andapplications.

Self-Instructional MaterialPrinted books are the primary form of instructional media;that are prepared by UET / NIIT and supplied to the students. Therefore, students have to draw mainly upon the printedmaterials, which are sent to them through their respective StudyCentres. The printed material would be sufficient to the extentof about 75 to 80% to write any assignment responses andprepare for the term-end examinations. However, studentsare strongly advised to refer to other sources and textssuggested in the Study Material in order to get a morecomprehensive knowledge of the subject matter.

Counselling SessionsIn distance education, face-to-face contact between the learnersand their tutors is relatively less and therefore Counselling isan important activity. The purpose of such counselling sessionsis to answer some of your questions and clarify your doubts. There are Academic Counsellors at the Study Centres to providecounselling and guidance to you in the subjects that you havechosen for study.

It should be noted that the Counselling Sessions would be verydifferent from classroom teaching or lectures. Counselling doesnot mean delivering lectures as in conventional teaching.Counsellors will try to help you to overcome academicdifficulties, which you may face while studying for your degreeprogramme. In these sessions you must try to resolve anysubject-based difficulties and any other related problems. Beforethe students attend the Counselling Sessions, they should gothrough the Course Material and make notes of the points tobe discussed. Unless the units are gone through, there may notbe much to discuss. The Co-ordinator of the respective StudyCentre will make a detailed Academic Schedule for theCounselling Sessions and inform the students.

AssignmentsAssignments are an integral part of distance learning. The mainpurpose of Assignments is to test your comprehension of thelearning materials that you receive through your Study Centresand also help you to better comprehend the Subjects byproviding feedback to you. The information given in the printedStudy Materials should be sufficient to a great extent for

University Librar y

answering the Assignments. However, you may haveto refer to other books and references given in theStudy Material to have a comprehensive knowledgeof the subject. But the Assignments are generallydesigned in such a way so as to help you to concentratemainly on the printed course material with a fleetingtouch to other references. You may also note thefollowing points:

a) It is compulsory for you to submit theAssignments. There will be two OfficialAssignments for each theory subject. You willnot get the Internal Assessment Marks if youdo not submit the Assignments for eachsubject, on time.

b) All Assignments should be submitted to therespective Study Centre.

c) The Assignment responses should be completein all respects. Before submission, you shouldensure that you have answered all the questionsin all the Assignments. Incomplete Answer Sheetswill fetch poor Internal Assessment (I.A) marks.

d) The Study Centre has the right to rejectAssignments received after the due date. You aretherefore advised to submit the same before thedue date.

e) A copy of the valued Assignments will be shownto the students along with the marks and thewritten comments which serve as a learningexercise for the students.

f) Two percent (2%) of the evaluated Assignmentsby the Academic Counsellors will be reviewed bythe University/UET, from time to time.

PracticalsConsiderable importance is given to hands-on trainingon practicals in this programme. A set of practicalexercises for subjects which need laboratory work areavailable at the Study Centres as also on the Website.Students need to do these practical exercises underthe guidance of their Study Centre faculty. TheInternal Assessment for Practicals will be throughtwo tests conducted at the Study Centre for eachPractical.
