    The Greater Niagara Circle Route Trails System involves over140 kms of mostly off-road, paved trails. The Systemencompasses the Welland Canals Trail, which passesalongside parts of the existing and previous Welland Canals,the Friendship Trail which follows an abandoned rail linebetween Port Colborne and Fort Erie, the Niagara RiverRecreational Trail, alongside the Niagara River between FortErie and Niagara-on-the-Lake, and the Waterfront Trail, whichpasses along Lakeshore Road between Niagara-on-the-Lakeand St. Catharines.

    This extensive trails network provides residents and visitorswith an opportunity to view parts of seven of the Region'stwelve local municipalities. Along it or nearby are many typesof accommodation and some of the sights that can be seeninclude:

    Parts of the previous three canals at variousplaces,

    The South Niagara Rowing Club in Welland,one of the area's well known rowing courses,

    Mud Lake Conservation Area in PortColborne,

    Lock 8 in Port Colborne which is the longestlock in the system,

    Fort Erie, a historic fort at the junction of theNiagara River and Lake Erie,

    The world famous Niagara Falls , the reasonfor constructing the Welland Canal,

    Fort George in Niagara-on-the Lake, ahistoric community that is home to the ShawFestival,
