Please join us in extending a Warm Welcome to our new House Doctors

Dr. Deirdre England is of East Indian heritage and was brought up in a culture

that esteems it’s older generations - treating them with great deference and

respect. She grew up in the U.K. then trained at the University of Toronto and

Dalhousie Medical School. She has been a Family Physician for twenty-five years

and has made her home in New Brunswick for the last seventeen. She has a

special love for the challenges Elder Health can present. Her medical approach is

to blend the most up to date advances with diligence and common sense. She

can also be found caring for hospitalized patients at the Saint John Regional Hospital, or off on

an island somewhere doing Rural medicine. She loves to travel with her two teenaged children,

and is always looking for new adventures!

******************************************************

Dr. Eileen Quinn grew up in a large, extended family in Saint John in an

environment that valued and enjoyed friends and relatives of all ages. She is

happily married and has three wonderful children. She studied at McGill

University and Memorial University of Newfoundland, and was a marine

biologist prior to becoming a family physician. She has always enjoyed spending

time with Elders, and has had a connection to nursing homes since her teens

when she worked summers as a nurse's aide at the Loch Lomond Villa. She has been a family

physician for twenty-five years and currently has a family practice in Hampton. Early in her

medical career she helped to care for the residents of the Dr. V A Snow Centre in Hampton, and

since 2010 she has been a member of the care team at Shannex Embassy Hall where she also

served as the medical director. She is very much looking forward to joining the Kings Way

LifeCare Alliance team, and especially looks forward to helping care for the Elders and

working with the devoted staff of this wonderful community.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!! In this first 2016 newsletter, we would like to share with you an entry from Dr. Bill Thomas' site Changing Aging. This blog was posted in May 2015. Enjoy the read!

Three Reasons Why Getting Older is Great Published by Alexa Elheart, Guest Blogger on May 15, 2015 at ChangingAging.Org

It is very accurate to describe current society as “youth-obsessed.” Many people feel embarrassed to

reveal their true ages, pressured to dress like middle school-aged kids, and live in fear of their next

birthday. The truth is that society has it completely backwards: getting older is actually the best part of

life! Don’t believe me?

1) You Have Better Social Skills

It’s proven to be true: as people age, their social skills increase. In a study conducted in 2010 at the

University of Michigan, 200 people were given “Dear Abby”-style letters asking for advice. Researchers

found that “Subjects in their 60s were better than younger ones at imagining different points of view,

thinking of multiple resolutions and suggesting compromises.”

2) You Gain Perspective

Another great part of getting older is that you realize what’s most important and what you don’t really

need to spend time worrying about. As Oprah Winfrey put it, one of the hardest–but most rewarding–

part of aging is “recognizing the time that you wasted and the things that you worried about that really

didn’t matter…that’s really the hardest part, that’s really the only regret that I have.”

When you’re young, you tend to give yourself an inordinate amount of stress; however, as you get older

and have the luxury of looking back on your experiences from early adulthood, you can start to see how

much unnecessary pressure you may have put on yourself. When you are older, you can finally free

yourself of that stress and save it for things that actually matter.

3) You Have the Opportunity to Give Back

While there are some twentysomethings who have the means to give back substantially to their

communities, the majority of people in their twenties just don’t have that privilege–whether that’s due

to a lack of funds or an inflexible work schedule. However, when you get older and find yourself with a

much more stable lifestyle, both professionally and economically, it becomes less prohibitive to donate

money or time to your community.

Get Out There and Thrive!

Go on – take your superior social skills, perspective, and sense of community and make the world a

better place! You have amazing and unique things to offer, and your experiences really have the

capability to improve the world around you.

Pastor’s Corner

“Oh, give thanks to the Lord! Call upon His name; make known His deeds among the peoples! Sing to Him, sing psalms to Him; Talk of all His wondrous works! Glory in His holy name; let the hearts of those rejoice who seek the Lord! Seek the Lord and His strength; seek His face evermore! “

Psalm 105:1-4
