SINGITA KWITONDA LODGEThe essence of Rwanda

2HOME CONTENTS PREVIOUS NEXT

Singita is honored to be opening Kwitonda Lodge in August 2019 in Rwanda, where more than one third of the world's mountain gorillas live in the high-altitude cloud forests of Volcanoes National Park.

The lodge puts gorilla trekking within easy reach and combines perfectly with a classic safari on the plains of Singita Serengeti in Tanzania.

Fact Sheet

WHY RWANDA?

The mountain gorillas of this region are

Rwanda’s treasure and have flourished in the

last decade. Thus the Rwandan government is

striving to find ways to increase their habitat

and this is where Singita can provide support.

Singita is about building sustainable revenue

streams to support conservation efforts in

Africa, and the government’s objective to

grow the gorillas’ habitat aligns closely with

Singita’s mission to create low-impact

tourism to help preserve areas of iconic

African wilderness for future generations.

ABOUT RWANDA

Rwanda is a small, extraordinarily beautiful

country where more than a third of the

world's remaining mountain gorillas live in the

high-altitude cloud forests of Volcanoes

National Park. Dominated by six extinct

volcanoes, the national park forms part of the

Virungas massif -111,000 acres (45,000

hectares) in extent -that straddles Rwanda,

Uganda and the Democratic Republic of

Congo.

Rwanda's miraculous recovery in the

aftermath of the 1994 genocide is testimony

to the new-found solidarity, impressive work

ethic, transparency, humility and warmth of

its people.

Within the context of this national journey

towards restoration of the people and the

land, Singita is honored to be opening

Kwitonda Lodge in late 2019.

• Establishment of a nursery.

• Planting of over 60,000 tree saplings

in and around the new lodge.

• Including tree planting in the guest

experience.

Community:

• Partnering with neighboring

communities to help them to thrive

economically and socially.

Habitat restoration:

• Supporting the Rwandan government in

finding ways to increase gorilla habitat

to grow the number and size of gorilla

family groups, conserving this critically

endangered species.

CONSERVATION

Working in close partnership with the

Rwandan Development Board and local

communities, Singita will be taking a

measured, long-term approach to

conservation on the edge of Volcanoes

National Park, in line with the company's

established 100-year vision to preserve

areas of iconic African wilderness for

future generations.

Community:

SINGITA KWITONDA LODGE

Singita's philosophy of treading lightly on the land is

paramount to our construction and design ethos.

With magnificent views of the Sabyinyo, Gahinga

and Muhabura volcanoes, Singita Kwitonda Lodge

will offer:

• 7 one-bedroom suites

• A two-bedroom suite

• A four-bedroom villa

The architects and interior designers are selecting

locally sourced and produced materials for walling,

ceilings and surface finishing. The local community

has been engaged in building traditional dry stone walling on-site for specialist areas within the

landscape. Fundamental to the design is treading

lightly on the land and sustainability is at the core of

the construction project.

Singita Kwitonda Lodge will be built to embody

the spirit of Rwanda and offer a tribute to the

lodge’s namesake – Kwitonda - a great silverback

gorilla whose legend lives on in Rwanda and was

known for his humility and gentleness.

THE EXPERIENCE

As the distance of each gorilla trek is

varied, depending on which family group

guests are allocated, meals and lodge

activities are flexible around each trek.

Besides gorillas, there is much to see and

explore, from the Afro montane forests of

Nyungwe National Park and primordial

Lake Kivu to the vibrant and sophisticated

capital city, Kigali.

LOCATION

Singita Kwitonda Lodge is set to open on 5 August 2019 on 178 acres (72 hectares) on the edge of Volcanoes National Park.

Relative to the population of the country and the intensive use of land for farming food crops, a 178-acre pocket of land in a country the size of Rwanda is highly prized.

The opening of Singita Kwitonda Lodge puts gorilla trekking within easy reach and in combination with a classic safari at Singita’s private concessions on the Serengeti plains in Tanzania. With a launch promotion that offers the ultimate Singita East African safari experience, don't miss out on this bucket list itinerary.
