Message from the DirectorThe idea of a “kabuki inspired” production of Macbeth has been poking around in the back of my mind for years. Every once and a while, I would share a quick sketch of the idea with people, and they would always respond positively. I fi nally reached the point where it could not live as just an idea any longer and here we are.

Why “kabuki inspired”? I love how “theatrical” a kabuki performance is. It has musicians on stage, has dance, singing, amazing costumes, stylized makeup, vocals, and movement.

Please note, our show is not kabuki! We do not have the expertise, budget, nor would we have the time to learn all of the required skills, and to be honest there are some aspects of kabuki that don’t work well for a community theatre in Canada. We don’t have an all male cast for in-stance. Rather the cast, crew and I have drawn elements from kabuki and wove them into our production so that we can create an atmosphere of an “Asian ashen night-mare”.

In particular, one thing to look for is the use of the fan. In kabuki the fan acts like the swiss-army-knife of props. It can represent many things. It can be concrete items such as a sword or a cup, and can be used to represent more abstract things like wind, sounds, and earthquakes.

The most amazing thing about working on this produc-tion, is seeing the huge number of people dedicating their time and talent. Some of the new skills learned just for this show: didgeridoo, repoussé and chasing (metal working method used to create the crown), learning to sit still, how to move a landscape rock, how to weild a 7+ foot weapon in a confi ned space safely, and how to make blood from ribbons.

A special thanks to Cheryl for being a trusty set of sec-ond eyes and seeing that which I miss. I believe the com-munity really stepped up to all the challenges presented. It is great to get this out of my head and onto the stage. We hope you enjoy the show.

Adjudicator

Jennifer MarryJennifer is so elated to be a part of this show. A HUGE Thank You goes to Jonathan, for his trust, guidance, and patience — I love you, man! And thank you to the beautiful cast for making my job so easy — it has been an absolute pleasure.

Makeup Director

Stefania RoseStefania Rose’s experience in art and fashion has led her to costume design. Her most recent work includes design-ing custom stage wear for vocalist Dana Jean Phoenix. This is Stefania’s fi rst production with KWLT, and her fi rst time costuming an entire cast. She would not have been able to do it without the guidance and assistance of Adrienne Dan-dy. It’s been an exciting process to see Jonathan’s vision come to life, and Stefania is thrilled to have been part of it.

Costume Director

Adrienne DandyAdrienne Dandy made clothing and medieval reenact-ment wear for over two decades before fi nding an outlet for her passion in theatre costumes. This show, with the vibrant creativity of both Jonathan and Stefania, has been a delight to work on. Her past work includes costumes for KWLT’s The Importance of Being Earnest, The Three Muske-teers, and Captain Hook’s Revenge, as well as TenBareToes Entertainment’s The Taming of the Shrew.

Costume Team

Alisha CormierThis will be Alisha’s fourth KWLT role onstage and the fi fth time she has worked with the company — an honour. She played Lady Macbeth in Ladies, Sigh No More, the Gossip in The Cagebirds, and a Baker Street Irregular in Sherlock’s Ex-cellent Adventure. She was also the ASM for KWLT’s 2008 production of The Three Musketeers where she was hand-ed a sword and learned some fi ght choreography. The experience of working on such a unique production has allowed Alisha to see a side of theatre that most don’t explore. She feels that Jonathan Dietrich’s Macbeth has been a worthwhile experience and hopes audience mem-bers will enjoy and appreciate Shakespeare all the more for it. As always, Alisha would like to thank her wonderful hus-band, John, for always being supportive.

Murderer

Olivia Dietrich“I love lisning to music and to be cind and making soings. Have a grat time.”

Young Macduff

Michael EtienneMichael is in his third year at Wilfrid Laurier University. This is his third show with KWLT which coincides with the fi rst anniversary of his joining. Having initially feared that the KWLT crowd might be strange and frightening, he is re-lieved to fi nd that they are a remarkable group of frighten-ingly strange people.

Rosse

Page 6: KWLT Macbeth Program v1-0 Print Version.

Justin FinistauriI would like to thank Jonathan for giving me the opportu-nity to act. This is the sixth show I have done with KWLT and I look forward to doing many more as well as donat-ing my time & my trade as an electrician to better our little community theatre.

Lady Macduff

Alisa HarderI have never been part of a community production and it has been a wonderful experience. Everyone is nice and fun to be around. It’s been inspiring to be among such pas-sionate people. I hope to continue to get involved with the KWLT community.

Apparitions, Young Siward

Stacey SaundersStacey has really enjoyed being part of this production and is grateful for the opportunity to be a part of one of her favourite plays. Since she joined the company in 2008, you can usually fi nd Stacey in a role behind the scenes. Some of her past shows with KWLT include The Anger in Ernest and Ernestine, Sleeping Cinder White, and Aladdin.

ASM

Cheryl GrantAfter a 9 year absence Cheryl is thrilled to return to KWLT as Assistant Director in our production of Macbeth. Thanks to Jonathan and Graham for their guidance and support. I’ve learned so much from the cast and crew. It’s been my pleasure. Enjoy the show.

Asst. Director

Stage Manager

Nicholas OddsonNick is happy to be working with Jonathan again and the KWLT team on this Kabuki inspired show. Having an op-portunity to work with traditional Japanese weapons (Naginata and Yari) has been fun even though KWLT’s space isn’t conducive to 7-8’ long pole-arms. Thanks to the cast and crew (especially Chad for his assistance) for all their dedication and creativity working through the com-bat sequences. Remember, safety then story then style.

When not onstage, Paul has often been seen both backstage and in the booth for numerous shows for KWLT, including as Stage Man-ager for the Horribly Horrifying Fun House of Death. Special thanks go to Anita and Robert for their love and support. Oh, and enjoy my attempts on the didgeridoo.

In his spare time, Chris is a manager at a local software company, an avid homebrewer, and an awful saxophone player. He shares a cosy old house in Kitchener with a love-ly and talented glass artist, two parakeets, seven fi nches and an inconstant number of fi sh.

Josh HoeyThis is Josh Hoey’s fi rst performance with KWLT after a three-year hiatus. He is absolutely thrilled to be back for Macbeth and grateful to be trusted with the challenging and rewarding role of Macduff . Some of Josh’s previous show experience includes Rochefort from The Three Mus-keteers, King Philip from The Lion in Winter, and having di-rected KWLT’s 2008 pantomime, Captain Hook’s Revenge.

Much love and gratitude to his wife and children in letting him take time away from the duties of being a father and husband, and replacing them with pretend duties of being a pretend-father and pretend-husband... and Avenger of Scotland.

Macduff

A few of the other companies Robin has been involved in include JM Drama, KWYT and Synchro Youth Theater. Robin thanks Jonathan for his guidance throughout the production and his fellow witches for be-ing incredible to creatively collaborate with.

Witch

D. MortonDouglas fi rst met Jonathan and Anita in the late ’90s, per-forming Shakespeare in Waterloo park with a now-defunct acting troupe called Ravenblack; so it seemed only right to audition when they were staging Macbeth. Douglas has been in many KWLT shows over the years, such as Mort, Julius Caesar, Rozencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. She’s the current Executive Producer for KWLT, was recently ac-cepted onto the Arts and Culture Advisory Committee for the city of Kitchener and works for the Multicultural Cin-ema Club. She would like to thank Daenera and Keiran for their love and support. On a fi nal note: for all his self depre-cation, Douglas sincerely feels that she has never met any-one with more raw talent and artistic passion (especially about Shakespeare) as an actor than Jonathan Dietrich.

Malcom

Chuck PeerenChuck is a veteran of the regions theatre and fi lm scene hav-ing appeared as a principle in Amadeus, Julius Caesar, Harvey, Dust of the Rabbi, Crucible, Twelfth Night, Midsummer Nights Dream, an Inspector Calls, No Exit, Hamlet, Tribute, Lion in Winter and recently as Juror 3 In KWLT’s Twelve Angry Men and Gremio in TBTs “Shrew.”He is grateful to KWLT for the opportunity to work with such a passionate ensemble on this daring production of Macbeth and is exceptionally delighted to bring to you tonight his por-trayal of Duncan. Dedicating tonight’s performance to his fam-ily he hopes that you will thoroughly enjoy tonight’s show.

Duncan

Peggy SerresPeggy was born and grew up on farm in Saskatchewan near Swift Current. In high school Peggy was the Pooh Bah in The Mikado; she played the fl ute in the orchestra for the community production of Oklahoma; and she played the fl ute in the Saskatchewan Youth Band. Peggy graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon with her Bachelor of Education and now teaches piano. Continuing on with performance is on Peggy’s bucket list, so she is ex-cited and grateful to Jonathan Dietrich for having her as part of Macbeth. Peggy enjoys spending time with her hus-band, four grown children, and three year old granddaugh-ter. She is excited to share her talents and appreciates all the support she’s had during the rehearsals.

Gentlewoman

Andrea WilsonAndrea is delighted to be on stage at KWLT again after a long time away. She is thankful for getting to work with such a wonderful cast and crew. It’s a joy to rehearse with so much support and so strong a group. Thanks to Jonathan and Cheryl and the stage management team for creating a wonderful environment within which all actors can grow and explore this fabulous text. And thanks to An-drew for chugging through it with her, night after night.
