Valentine's Day (per Wikipedia )

Valentine's Day, also known as Saint Valentine's Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine is a celebration observed on Feb-ruary 14 each year. It is celebrated in many countries around the world, although it is not a public holiday in most of them.

St. Valentine's Day began as a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus. Several mar-tyrdom stories were invented for the various Valentines that belonged to February 14, and added to later martyrologies.

A popular hagiographical account of Saint Valentine of Rome states that he was imprisoned for per-forming weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire. According to legend, during his imprisonment, he healed the daughter of his jailer, Asterius.

An embellishment to this story states that before his execution he wrote her a letter signed "Your Valentine" as a farewell. Saint Valentine's Day is an official feast day in the Anglican Communion, as well as in the Lutheran Church.[5] The Eastern Orthodox Church also celebrates Saint Valen-tine's Day, albeit on July 6 and July 30, the former date in honor of the Roman presbyter Saint Val-entine, and the latter date in honor of Hieromartyr Valentine, the Bishop of Interamna (modern Terni).

The day was first associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. In 18th-century England, it evolved into an occa-sion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offer-ing confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines"). In Europe, Saint Valentine's

Keys are given to lovers "as a romantic symbol and an invita-tion to unlock the giver’s heart", as well as to children, in order to ward off epilepsy (called Saint Valentine's Mala-dy) Valentine's Day symbols that are used today include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards.

DID YOU KNOW?

Approximately 150 million Valentine's Day cards are exchanged annually, making Val-entine's Day the second most popular card-sending holiday after Christmas

Liesbeth and Peter Donet have found another crèche which is in dire need of assistance—.the Lihleithemba crèche situated in Quarry/Avoca. It was Jabulisiwe who stopped us on that small road and asked us to meet the children. As her English is not very good, she called her husband who speaks it well. Their request for a small fan was such a needy item, because that grade R room felt like an oven. On Thursday we delivered some food and a fan. And if food prices are not rising too high we may add them to one of our reg-ular deliveries

The Elim Church, situated on the Bluff has an outreach programme in Pickering Street at the Point. Every Sunday Pastor Betty Steenkamp feeds the homeless, the street children, the malnourished, the sick (HIV/Aids and T.B.) and the unemployed. She makes sandwiches and brings cool drinks with support from her congregation on the Bluff and supplies them with Morvite and mieliemeal After the service she counsels, listens, encourages and supports where she can. During the week, whenever she has transport money she visits the sick in Addington Hospital When she started this minis-try in 2014 there were a handful of people who came regularly on a Sunday. At present between 50 to 60 people arrive on a Sunday Morning. Because of the increase in attendance there is not enough seating. But Thanks to Peter Donet, who has kindly made some benches (see pictures) for now that problem is solved. Next to Peter is Betty Steenkamp.

The work she does is done in Faith, great love and respect as well as compassion, shown by her ac-ceptance, kindness and hope given to those who feel feel discouraged and rejected. Thanks to our Rotary club who has over the last year supported this outreach with clothing, shoes and food. Many have been blessed because of your generosity. Thank you Liesbeth and Peter for caring and shar-ing your compassion

DR. GEEZER

An old geezer became very bored in retirement and decided to open a medical clinic. He put a sign up outside that said: "Dr. Geezer's Clin-ic. Get your treatment for $500. If not cured, get back $1,000.

"Doctor "Young," who was positive that this old geezer didn't know beans about medicine, thought this would be a great opportunity to get $1,000. So he went to Dr. Geezer's clinic. Dr. Young:" Dr. Geezer, I have lost all taste in my mouth. Can you please help me? Dr. Geezer:" Nurse, please bring medicine from box 22 and put 3 drops in Dr. Young's mouth” Dr. Young: “Aaagh!!! -- "This is gasoline!" Dr. Geezer: "Congratulations! You've got your taste back. That will be $500."

Dr. Young gets annoyed and goes back after a couple of days figuring to recover his money. He says: "I have lost my memory, I cannot remember anything." Dr. Geezer:" Nurse, please bring medi-cine from box 22 and put 3 drops in the patient's

mouth. "Dr. Young: "Oh, no you don't, - that is gasoline! "Dr. Geezer: "Congratulations! You've got your memory back. That will be $500."

Dr. Young, (after having lost $1000), leaves an-grily and comes back after several more days. "Dr. Geezer, my eyesight has become weak; I can hardly see anything! "Dr. Geezer: "Well, I don't have any medicine for that so, here's your $1000 back," he said giving him a $10 bill. Dr. Young:" But this is only $10!"Dr. Geezer: "Congratulations! You got your vision back!; That will be $500."

Moral of story: Just because you're "Young" doesn't mean that you can outsmart an "old Gee-zer". Remember: Don't make us old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to tick us off. Now, enjoy your day!!
