L. Casey Chosewood, M.D., M.P.H. Director, Office for Total Worker Health® National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Dr. L. Casey Chosewood is the Director of the Office for Total Worker Health ® at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In this role, he promotes the protection and improvement of the safety, health and well-being of workers around the world. From 2004 to 2009, he served as the Director of the CDC Office of Health and Safety safeguarding the 15,000 members of the CDC workforce as they faced the new challenges of the modern public health era, including emerging infectious diseases, bioterrorism and other global health challenges. His Office led numerous CDC workforce protection programs, including all occupational health services, laboratory and biosafety programs, environmental and compliance activities, and workplace well-being and prevention initiatives. Before this, he served as the Medical Director of CDC’s three occupational health clinics. Dr. Chosewood received his medical degree at the Medical College of Georgia and completed his residency in Family Medicine at the University of Connecticut. He has been an Assistant Professor of Family and Community Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine since 1997. He received an MPH in Health Policy and Management from Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health in May 2014. Before coming to CDC, Dr. Chosewood was the Medical Director for the Southeastern Region of Lucent Technologies. From Good Idea to Great Impact: Exploring the Total Worker Health® Model for Healthier Work Since its inception, the NIOSH Total Worker Health® Program has focused on inspiring and fast-tracking credible, high-quality research into practical application for organizations, large and small. This session examines the path taken by this innovative initiative to nurture an emerging field of research, cultivate broad interest and capacity, and engage partnerships for long-term sustainability. After a brief description of the Total Worker Health (TWH) concept and an overview of the TWH national research agenda, the discussion will focus on successful strategies taken by the TWH team related to research coordination, partnership development, in-house pilots and programs, training initiatives, and workforce development/capacity building. Additional content on the early benefits of branding, use of social media and other communication strategies for advancing key program goals will also be highlighted.
