Globally, including developed countriessuch as Australia and the USA, three fourths of vision loss isunnecessary; it is either preventable or treatable. TheWorld Health Organization and International Agency forthe Prevention of Blindness launched a global initiative –Vision 2020, the Right to Sight, in 1999 that aims to eliminateavoidable blindness by 2020. Great progress is beingmade in developing countries and diseases such as tra-choma and onchocerciasis are decreasing. Capacityespecially for cataract surgery and refractive services isgrowing rapidly. Although much of this work occurs indeveloping areas, there is much unmet need in our own
