SOS...SAVE OUR SHOPKEEPERS A rallying cry has been made to save any more businesses from closure due to the gas and water pipe-laying disruptive road works in the village over the next few months. Villagers are being urged to shop as usual despite the total closure of the A6 for two months starting on July 5th. Duffield Parish Council and Duffield Community Association have each appealed to the community to help the village stores becoming beset with financial difficulties. “We don’t want a ‘ghost village’.The people who provide much needed services in Duffield deserve our backing in what is a perilous time for them,” said Derek Cook, secretary of the Community Association. Gifted, a speciality store on Town Street, is the first victim of the road closure for the gas mains replacement work. Owner Kate Hambleton, who started business in Duffield two years ago, was laying the bedrock for success when the news of the road closure was revealed. “This year business was hit by the recession but we were getting through when this news hit us. It was devastating. It was decision time and the loss of trade I anticipated tipped the scale against continuing,” said Kate. Gifted has closed but Kate, who has been bombarded by e- mails and letters of sympathy from customers throughout the area, is continuing to do business on a soon to be completed website and at various stores in the area. Duffield Parish Council is urging authorities to speed up the compensation process for possible loss of earnings. Project manager Dave Orton of the National Grid says: “Due to engineering and safety constraints a road closure is needed and we apologise for any inconvenience caused. We want to ensure the gas pipe is laid as quickly and safely as possible.” Due to the road closure on the A6 Town Street from Monday 5 July the bus Stops on Town Street between Wirksworth Road and Broadway will not be in use. Sun shines throughout Community WeekThe tone was set for Community Week when the Vicarage Garden Party acted as host for the crowning of this year’sCarnival Princess, Rebecca Fenton. Rebecca looked really cool in her ice blue dress as she was crowed, attended byMegan Grace and Daisy Williamson. A full and varied programme of music was performed during the evening. The Meadows School Summer Fair followed the next day to continue the festivities. Monday saw the running of the 25th

Duffield ‘5’ organised by Jerry Sharp. There were 242 entrants and congratulations go to David Narborough who was the firstlocal runner home in second place in the amazing time of 34 minutes and 58 seconds. David won the under 18 class. The next four days featured what have become traditional Community Week events with the Family Barbecue and Fun Eveningon Eyes Meadow, The Primary Schools Sports Spectacular, The Duffield Singers and Friends in Concert and The Family TreasureHunt arranged by last year’s winners, the Osborn family. The Stokoe family won this year’s Treasure Hunt and they now havealmost a year to devise the 2011 competition. Carnival Day appeared to break all records. There were 52 stalls booked raising funds, offering information and selling items. The Carnival Procession was even longer with 6 walking floats depicting scenes from up to 200 years ago with Duffield BaptistChurch celebrating its bi-centenary. It looked as though most of the pupils from William Gilbert School took part dressed inEngland’s 1966 strip. The figures aren’t in yet but it also appeared that the attendance was up on other years.Judy Clough opened the Carnival with a witty and touching speech and presented the Silver Leaves Club and both Women’sInstitutes with a personal donation for their work in the community.Chris Johnson handed a DCA cheque for £500 to the Massive Youth Project for its work with teenagers in the village. The arena events were well received with energetic displays from the Vision School of Dance, Star Steppers Cheerleaders, TheThree Shires Medieval Society and the Chesterfield Musketeers Showband. Many families and groups of friends then settled down to a picnic whilst waiting for the evening band concert featuringPigwagon, Ain’t Lizzie and Chaser. There was a variety of food on offer for those that hadn’t brought their own and the bar runby Duffield Cricket Club was kept busy throughout. The Church Service brought to an end a week of strong community togetherness and the most pleasant atmosphere of CarnivalDay has been remarked upon by many. The Duffield Community Association thanks all who volunteered to help in any way for their contribution be-it picking up a pieceof litter, moving a chair or acting as a steward. It also thanks all the stallholders for bringing such a wide range of activities, games, information, etc. by Derek Cook

The theme for the camp wasInternational because of theWorld Cup and theforthcoming InternationalScout & Guide camp atChatsworth. All the activities were based

around countries such asEgypt, Italy, Nepal, China,Holland, Australia andFrance. As part of the weekend therewere a number of challengesthat each pack took part in to

gain points and at the end ofthe camp a winning pack wasannounced. 1st Duffield Cubs won thetrophy for only the secondtime in its history. This was made even more

special as it was the first bigcamp that the leaders hadundertaken since taking overthe running of the twoDuffield packs.Well done to all involved.

Thanks to a generous donation from Duffield Parish Council, the 1st Duffield Guides were able to purchase three newtents and various camp equipment to use at their recent centenary celebration camp. The weekend was spent at Drum Hillwhere 27 Guides enjoyed abseiling, climbing, low ropes, an assault course and a circus skills workshop.Viv Carter.

Hi Scene Eds.,Paraphrased from the current issue of Giving, Guide DogsSpring Magazine.(A really good cause)-“If you hear a guide dog owner say`busy busy`it will bebecause they are prompting their dog to relieve itself onrequest. To begin with the phrase is used when a pup poos ,then justbefore it goes and ,finally, the pup is encouraged to go onrequest-with lots of praise when it gets it right!”.Some sighted Duffield dog owners might like to give this atry, especially the demented souls who, having picked up thepoo in a polythene bag, chuck it over the nearest fenceor, often,up into a tree!.RegardsJeanette Arnold(tree person!)

It has been just over a yearsince Massive officiallyopened and since then over370 different young peoplehave dropped in to use thefacility, with an average of32 attending each nightMassive is open. Massive has recentlylaunched its website(massiveduffield.co.uk) andthe project continues to gofrom strength to strength afterrecently receiving furtherfunding to help continue itsvital service to the village.Massive continues to openevery Monday night 4-7pmfor those aged 11-14 (years 7-9) and every Friday night 7-10pm for those aged 14-18(years 10-13). On a normal evening there isa wide range of activities forthe young people to enjoy, aswell as one-off eventsthroughout the year. For example, during thesummer holiday Massive ishosting a week’s worth ofactivities from Monday 9th –Friday 13th August includingraft building at CarsingtonWater; a trip to the Zoo; adigital music mixing session;a trip to Megazone; anadventure activity day in thepeaks; and a treasure hunt andBBQ. In addition Massive will beopen most nights that week. For more details do visit thewebsite and please contact usif you’re interested in gettinginvolved with any of thesummer activities. This last year would not havebeen possible without thesupport from a number ofvolunteers from the village.Their dedication to helpMassive run smoothly andeffectively in their differentroles in the kitchen, on the

door, on thetuck shop andgenerallyaround thespace isphenomenal. Yet it must besaid that thevast majorityof Massivevolunteershave comefrom the local churches.

However Massive is a secularproject and it was neverintended to involve mainlychurch goers, but besomething people from acrossthe village could get involved in.

Therefore, we would urgemore villagers to get involvedand volunteer their time on aMonday and Friday nightbecause Massive is in need ofhalf a dozen more volunteersto ease the pressure on thosealready volunteering. If you want to be involvedin this rewarding and

enjoyable work pleasecontact us [email protected]. All volunteers will be CRBchecked and appropriatetraining given. We need your help, to notonly continue Massive, butexpand the project further.

can be given the quality of lifetheir parents would like. Thisbook is filled with moneysaving tips, tricks, secrets andvery useful advice. In The Battle of Quiberon Bay1759: Hawke and the Defeat ofthe French Invasion ProfessorNicholas Tracey gives afascinating and detailedreconsideration of the eventsleading up to the battle and theengagement itself, but placesgreat emphasis upon its widersignificance. We also have recently receiveda copy of Gentlemen andBlackguards of GamblingMania and the Plot to Steal theDerby of 1844 by NicholasFoulkes. This story of men, money, gambling and sportingobsession led to one of the mostsensational court cases of thenineteenth century as aninvestigation to expose the mostaudacious sporting plot of the

age took place.I have just finished reading TheLibrary of Shadows, anengrossing literary thriller ofintrigue, conspiracy and theextraordinary power of reading,by Mikkel Birkegaard. It was areally good read which I woulddefinitely recommend.Happy Reading

The first victim of the effects of the roadclosures due to gas and water pipe layingin Town Street is Kim Ballinger of ~GiftedShe writes to the Duffield Scene:It is with much sadness that I have had tomake a decision to close Gifted and althoughsome of you already know, there are manywho do not. This year has been increasingly difficult forGifted. The strain of our economic climate, high overheads and the National Gridannouncing road closure in Duffield duringJuly and August (and continued road works upuntil Christmas) made iT impossible to stayopen. I have a young family and the stress over thepast few months has been hard on me andcertainly not good for them. For the past two years I have absolutely lovedrunning Gifted and I would like to thank you allfor your support. I will miss running the shop and more so I willmiss all my customers. My love of jewellery has grown since I openingGifted and I have decided to start a newbusiness concentrating on building up myranges and placing cabinets in differentlocations around Derby. I will also be attending events and runningjewellery parties, which is something thatproved very popular last year. Also a new online site will be up and runningas soon as possible.

You can find my jewellery at:

Sitting today on the beachat Spurn Point, gazing outat the array of ships comingin to unload their cargo atthe docks in Hull, mygrandson ran towards mewith the exciting news thathe had seen a Roe deer. The contrast between what hehad seen and the industrialtraffic could not have beenmore stark.Spurn is an ever moving spitof sand off the East Coastwhich is constantly beingeroded and rebuilt - but isalso a unique environment ofsand dunes, marron grass, spiky sea buckthorn and wildcarrot plants. In amongst other insects ithosts an enormous colony ofBrown tail moths whosecaterpillars are exceedinglyhairy, gather on the disusedlighthouse and bushes andcan even be seen crawlingacross the road in greatnumbers!Spurn’s most importantaspect is that it is a NatureReserve which is carefullyand strictly controlled –

having no invasive, introduced plants or animals -hence the deer and the groundnesting skylarks.Whilst admiring mycollection of rocks andshells, I received a phonecall from Rodney – ourerstwhile chair of theMeadow - who was down onthe “beach” at the curve ofthe Ecclesbourne river. He wanted to tell me aboutthe abundance of bees on theComfrey plants and theplethora of beautifullycoloured dragon and damselflies going up and downtaking little notice of hispresence. He remarked that he couldnot remember seeing so manybefore and he is right. It is proving to be afabulously productive yearand we hope will continue tobe so now that we have begun

removing the HimalayanBalsam from the edge of ournature reserve.Introduced by the Victoriansas a garden plant, it is now inevery county the length andbreadth of England. Where it is in abundance, noother plants can grow and, having cleared a large stretch,we are now left with open, bare ground which should berecolonised by native flowersvery soon. Some of these may be fieldpoppies.Have you noticed that whenyou dig a part of your gardenthat’s not been dug forages, all sorts of interestingplants grow that you don’texpect? This happens in fields as well(or where the soil is newlyexposed) – hence thewonderful array of poppiesin amongst the strangely acidyellow of the rape crop alongthe Moscow straight on theway to Milford. Poppies are one of the fewseeds that need light in orderto germinate and lay dormant

in the soil until exposed tosunlight. The battlefields of France

during the 1st World Warwere a poignant reminder ofthis fact when they bloomedwith swathes of red poppyflowers after the bombs andshelling had finished.Meanwhile, the surrounds ofthe ponds are a mass of oxeye daisies, poppies, campionand water irises. In the surrounding long grassthere are tiny toads and frogsin abundance and thebuttercups are interspersedwith purple knapweed andcranesbill flowers. So whilst our reserve is not aswell protected as others (andwe haven’t any deer) we arevery accessible to all.I would encourage anywheelchair user who wishesa Radar key for the accessgate to get one free ofcharge by presenting theirblue disabled badge to theirLocal Authority and comeand share this panoply offlora and fauna.

DOGS ON EYES MEADOWSThe Parish Council has received a number of letters and emailsregarding dogs on Eyes Meadow. Many of these communications concern rumors that the ParishCouncil have or are to take action to ban dogs from the site . This isnot the case. The Parish Council has discussed details highlighted by residents inthe recent questionnaire and you can find a record of this in the April2010 minutes (minute reference 2026). The Council felt that whilst the questionnaire had raised concernsover the use of the site, further information and research includingpossibly another questionnaire was needed before any furtheroptions could be considered. Ecclesbourne year 11 have now won the Derbyshire County

Rugby Cup for 5 consecutive years.

Their latest championship was against a very strong Queen

Elizabeth Grammar School from Ashbourne.

In a very close first half Ecclesbourne final broke the deadlock

just before half time with a fantastic solo try from Sam Martin to

make it 5-0 at the interval

.The reigning champions then pulled away in the second half with

further tries from Jake Roome, Lewis Madeley and Luke Frixou.

QUEG’s pulled a try back towards the end making the final score

29 – 5.

Alan Bradshaw head of Rugby at Ecclesbourne (pictured top left)

applauded the lads by saying “these lads are truly remarkable,

they reached the last 32 in the 15 a side of the nationals last year

and the last 8 in the country earlier this year at 7 a side.

I’m not aware of 5 consecutive wins in the Derbyshire cup in over

35 years of my time at Ecclesbourne”

NO JOY FOR DUFFIELD CRICKETERSON MAGNIFICENT CARNIVAL DAY

There were some notablygratifying efforts byindividuals, but no successfor any of Duffield’s threesenior teams on a sunnyCarnival Saturday.Ashley Gray followed up tworecent centuries with amagnificent 92 against DerbyCongs at Littleover butDuffield finished short intheir run chase once Gray wasout.Batting first the Congsamassed 297 for 9 in their 46overs and it was onlyencouraging bowling fromyoungsters Will Eisenberg (4for 49) and Jono Clare (3 for85) which helped keep Congsunder 300. Gray’s left handed stroke playkept Duffield interested in thechase, but despite a promising41 from young Jack Clarkand 32 from RussellHolmes, the effort fizzled outas Duffield reached 240 for 8,a praiseworthy draw.

At home Duffield 2nd XI,weakened by unavailability, were brushed aside byMarehay.Despite the accuracy of MarkAntill (4 for 56) Marehayreached 226 for 8 and despiteresolute efforts by veteransPhil Jones (30) and IanHadfield (31 not out),Duffield could only manage114 and were thrashed by 112runs.The 3rd XI performed best ofall the teams. Batting first they totalled 218for 7 with R Ralph (57) andveteran John Carpenter (39)the main contributors.Disappointingly opponentsDenby made no seriousattempt to chase the runs andwere content to play out adraw at 154 for 5.Another youngster RichardSanders took 3 for 42 butDenby were never in anytrouble. Not a great day really.
