BUFORA Bultetin

It is only two issues since I had the sad task torelate of the passing of a number of friends andcolleagues. This time it is even sadde., as long-time BUFORA member and council member,Robin Lindsey passed away in February. Robinhad not been in the best of health for many years,

but this did not stop him doing sterling work onbehalfof ihe association, and he will be missed byall of those that knew him. Indeed. coming so

soon after the loss of Amold West, BUFORA has

lost two of its stalwart council membe$, whodevoted so much oftheir life to the association andthe study of all manner of mysteries. Both Robinand Amold were among those who brought a levelof dedication to the needs of running anassociation such as ours, and who are so very hardto replace.

On a more positive note, you will see in thisBulletin ihat along with TEMS, BUFORA will beholding an aftemoon mini-conference on Sunday24th Jure, wi$ Ceorgina Bruni as lhe marnspeaker. We are also looking at the possibility ofaone-off retum to the old lecture venue ofKensington for an event in the autumn, whichhopefully will also include the Amold WestMemorial Lecture-As you will all hopefully be aware, next yearmarks BUFORA'S 40th anniversary, so it seems avery fitting year for BUFORA lo hold a conferenceagain. We have now started planning for a

conference in June 2002 (probably to be held irthe Nonh-east), and Malcolm Robinson will be co-ordinating the organization. Keep watching theBull€tins for more details.

Can I lake this opportunity to remind you all againoflhe AGM on Monday 2nd April at 7.00pm, see

elsewhere in this Bulletin for the derails. Allmembers should have received the annual reportalong with this magaz ine.

AT bute to Robin Linds€v(2Eth Ocr 1945 - lsr Feb 2001)

By Bob Digby

Membe.s will be sad lo leam of another loss toour subjecl, coming as it does, hard on the heelsofa numberofsuch reports in recent times.

Robin Lindsey died after a heart attack whilstundergoing pre-operative procedures atAddenbrookes hospital Cambridge. A fortyminute battle then ensued to resuscilate him afierwhich time he had suffered brain alamage andneeded iife support. He never regainedconsciousness.

I think it is important to mention that Robin cameftom a farming family, although he chose not toto into that Industry. He was an engineer withPost Office Telecommunications (later BT) formany yeals until he retired on health grcunds. Hisfarming fafiily background meant he had a highlypractical approach to things, very down !o eanhwilh feet firmly on the ground and no nonsense.

This slood him in good stead for dealing with thehigh strangen€ss / highly exotic nature of clairnsmade within his areas of interest in UFOS andCiop circles and the Pannormal. Robin was ifyou like, a real life X files man but more likeScully than Mulder in his approach.

His background as an engineer meant a natuElteodency towards a "nuls and bolts" interest inUFOS and lead to an interest in the instrumenteddetection of possibly exotic technological craft.(lfthey were to be found l) In this pursuit be wasa key member of the ExEa -Terrestrial SocieryHe allowed part ofhis farmhouse to be given overto housing all sorls of detection and recordingappaftrtus.

He was a stalwart suppo(er and long standingmember ofthe British UFO Research Association(Bufon) from around 1967 onwards and was bestknown for his role as Sound recordist and tapelibmrian. For yerrs he faithtully recorded rhemonthly lectures in London, offering copies tomembe$ as a service fol those who could notattend the lectures. Ill heahh in more recent timesmeant we no lonS€r saw him so regularly-

In l97l he joined the management committee ofBufora and took an aclive part in lhe day to dayrunning of the Association. With only occasionalbreaks he did this almost continuously and at thetime of his de.ath, was still a serving Director onwhat by now had become the Council ofMaDagement of a limited company (byGuarantee)

He was a team player and could be relied on toprovide lechnical suppon and recording sewicesat the various conferences that were organisedover the years. He became involved with localgroups too in Northampton and Cambridge. Hewould not hesitate to tmvel far for a good lectureprcsentation on an interesting or controveNialsubject.

He made appearances on TV and RadioprcgErmm€s in the contexl of his interests inquizzes, model making and UFOS. He had a greatsense of humour and could see a funny side todifficult situations.

Some anecdotes may help iliustrate:-

One day Robin met a real life "Russian spy" a

Major in the CRU (Russian Miliary Inlelligence)-All this man got out ofRobin for his trouble was a

Buzby carrier bag with some pencils, beer matcoasters and stickers of Buzby to take home for

his kids. Robin couldjust not accept this was theserious hce of espionage in this country.(However, the major was later expelled foractivities incompalible with his starus)

At a New Age UFO conference in America, everyone attending was asked to stand up andhold hands in a big circle and commune with theUniverse, to the accompaniment of some NewAge music. Not really understanding what thiswas all about, Robin tumed lo his colleague, withwhom he was obliged to hold hands and asked "Are we about to do the Hokey Cokey orsomething ?"

Robin would put his money where his mouth wasand would discretely lend a financial hand toBufora rather than see a project flounder for lackof firnds. Even his tape service was not done forprofitbut lilerally as a service to members.

Robin \*?s a real work horse who could always berelied on and Bufom has suffered an irreplaceableloss. At a time when some people sneer at "duty"and doing things for the benefit of theorganisation or being of service Robin lived bythose values and act€d on them rather than talkabout them. It would be no idle boast to say thathis lravels all over the world meant he had friendion every continent. How many of us can saythat ?

A fioal obsewation is that Robin suffered thecalastrophic Kidney failurc back in 1985 when hewas 40. I think we have to be grateful he managedover 15 yea6 with an extended lease of life. There were rnany occasions wh€n he worried allofus with the possibility he was doing roo much. However, he lived life to the fullest possibleextent and refused to let his handicap get in theway ifhe couldpossibly help it.

I believe Robin's family had been long preparedfor something to happen to him. There had been along succession of heakh problerns to conquerand Robin was running out of ene.gy to fightthem all. Il is a miracle he coped for so long andwas a veteran of two transplants. There was adifficult moment when the surgeon asked thefamily if he could switch off life suppo(.

Knowing Robin as we all did, there was linlehesilation that he deserved peace and would neverhave wanted to suwive as a vegetable, totallydependent on othels.

He will be sadly missed but I believe he hastaught us all some valuable lessons:-. Make the most ofwhat you have.. Don't tak€ your health for granted.. Be practical about things.

The funeral was on Monday l2th February at St-Mary's Church Whittlesey, with interment atWhittlesey Cemetery. The weather was cold andwet but there was a good tumout. Bufora wasrcpresented by Brian James (Chairman), SteveGamble (ex Chairman), Bob Digby (ex

Chairman), and long standing members Rob Bulland Roy Rowlands. A wr€ath was sent on behalfof everyone in Bufora, with a note of thanks forhis years of dedicated service. Our grateful thanksmust go to the family for their hospitality after thesewice. I was also quite honoured to be asked tohelp in the writing of lhe Eulogy for the serviceAfter all Robin has done, it was the least I coulddo.

Robin's legacy is that he has len to Bufora, thelibrary of lecture recordings. We won't forgethirn.

ROBIN LINDSEY

I was very saddened to hear lhe news of Robin'sdeath. Robin was one ofthe first people that Imel when I joined BUFORA, so that means that Iknew him for the best part of 30 yeals. I think the6rst time we met was al a BUFOM lecture atKensington Central Library given by DavidViewing about the wo* ofthe Bedfordshire UFOSociety. Robin, as was usually lhe case, wasthere to tape record the proceedings-

BUFOS, which Iater changed its name to theExtra-tenestrial Society, was a small group ofmainly engineers. They had set up variousinstrumenls in a canvan at Warminster in thehope of getting some physical evidence of UFO

activity. Robin was a keen member of their teamand spent vitually every weekend at one timetravelling fiom Peterborough to Warmidster tomaintain the equipment. When the group had torcmove their instruments fiom Wiltshir€ Robinwas able to house ihem at a disused cottage on hisfamily farm in the Fens.

Apart fiom being a member of BUFORA Robinwas also a very active member of the local groupsin Cambridge and Northampton. But as well as

his interest in UFOS Robin had a wide range ofother interests. We travelled to a number ofUFOconfercnces together in dillerent parts of thewo d and were also able lo take in other jointinteres6 like visits to space and asfonomymuseums and exhibils and travelled on a numberofpreserved railways. On one ofour rrain trips inAmedca we were asked by one of the fellowpassengers if we were lamiliar with London - ifso, perhaps we knew her friend Mrs Green -ulllm!Or the conference we went to in Spain. The taxidriver tumed up late and so only had half theplanned time to get to the airport. So Robinjumped in the front seat l|ext to the driver and offwe sel- We went along the cliff top road atsomething well in excess ofthe speed limit. Andof couNe, the route we took meant that Rdbinwas on the side of the road that overlooked theshear drop ofthe cliff Uncharacterisrically Robinwas very quiet on thatjoumey.

As I said, the first time I met Robin he was tapereco.ding a BUFORA lecture. Over the years

lhere were two other members who regularlyrecorded meetings and when both Brian Frenchand Ivar MacKay passed on Robin incorporatedtheit collections into his tape archive. This willmake a valuable rccord for future geneEtions ofUFO students.

I am proud !o have been able to call Robin afriend and I think all those who knew him willhave many happy memories for the yeam lo come.

ROBIN LINDSEY

I got to know Robin Lindsey when I became amemberofBUFORA in the early 70 s.

Robin rarely missed a lecture, even though he hadquite a distance to !'avel to the London Venue forthe monthly meetings. The only time he missed alecture was either when he was on holiday orwhen he was quite seriously ill or in hospital. There were times when he would make it to theIecture when he was obviously not really fit totravel, but his interest in the subject and hisdetermination to record the lecnrres against allodds, meant that one could rely on Robin to bethere. I remember on some occasions, when hewas feeling quite ill and faint, he would leave thelecture theafe dudng a recording and go out inlothe str€et for some fresh air, leaving me to keepan eye on his recording equipment, wbich I washappy to do.Robin and I had a lol in common as elecEonicengineers, he with the Post Office Engineeringand later British Telecoft, and myself inTelevision Broadcast Engineering. We wouldoften discuss technical things over the telephoneor In pe$on,

I always admired Robin s strength ofcharacter. Ifhe disagr€ed with someone or something, he wasnot afraid to speak his mind. I can r€memberoccasions when several of us were enjoying ameal following a BUFORA meeting that Robinwould tell the waiter in no uncertain terms that hissoup was cold or that his lager was flat! I leamedfroan that, and have since become more asserlivemyself in Restaurants and other public places. Ican remember another occasion during aBUFORA meering when Robin srood up duringqueslion time following the lecture and said thathe didn't agree wirh anything lhar rhe lecfier hadsaidl In actual fact he put itin somewhat strongerterms!

Robin was a proud and very independent personand never liked to feel that he was a burden toanyone. Even in r€cent years when his health wasfailing badly, he would still put up a determinedfight to cope on his own mther than admit defeat.

Page 7: l---- t2-bufora.org.uk/documents/BUFORABulletin2No.23Feb2001.pdf · 4 Robin Lindsey Remembered 8 Concluding the Interview With Tony Bassett, by Malcolm Robinson t4 Sighting Summaries,

Robin had a great sense ofhumour and I enjoyedmany a laugh with him. Ahhough he was whatone might call a 'loner', I really do believe heenjoyed Iife to the full, in spite ofhis poor health, even though it was very much an up-hill strugglefor him in recent months.

I will miss Robin very much indeed as I knowyou will. I find it hard to accept that I will nothear his voice on my telephone ever again.Although some ofyou may not have agreed withall of Robin's views, nevertheless, I'm sure youwould agree that he deserves a great deal of creditfor having the courage of his beliefs and

convictions.

I doubt whether BUFORA's monlhly meetingswill everbe quite the same again without Robin.

Roy Rowlands.

Robin Lindsey

In much the same way that I never really had thechance to work alongside Amold W€st oncouncil, I also have sadly not been able !o workwith Robin for as I long as I would have liked, despite knowing him for a number of years as ilfriend and colleague, and of course Robin wasactively involved in BUFORA when I firstjoinedin 1975. Although Robin didn't enjoy the best ofhealth by any means for several yea6, the onenogble virtue he exhibited was in nevercomplaining about his health, and never ietting itstop him doing what he wanted to do, and I haveleam€d ftom him on this aspect of life. Iremeftber speaking lo Robin in 1996 Grior ro rheconference I was organizing for Contact UK),when Robin had been unwell, yet he told me ofthe wonderful time he'd had travelling all overEurope looking at railways, if memory servgs meconectly this included a ride on the Trans-Siberian railway!Robin and I had many interests in common, although we got to explore ideas in all too few ofthem. One nice fact about meeting Robin'sfamily at his funeral was to find out that his elderbrother, Tom, also sharcd a healthy disb€lief forwhat 'orthodox science' might tell him was true,

stating with certainty lhat the Pyramids were nolmade by man, and ihat it was obvious with all lh€stars and planets in the Cosmos, that we couldn'tbe the only intelligent li fe.

Per haps lhe lasting memories of Robin were ofhis tireless work on behalf of not just BUFORA,but any other organization thal he was involvedin.

Thanks, Robin, you will be missed, but neverforgonen.

Interview with Tony Bassett:The Inventor of Mind Machines

By Malcolm Robinson

Cohcluding the intetview bj Malcolm Robinsonand Judith Jafdar with Tony Bassett - inventordid designed of OOBE Expe ence 'MindMdchihes'

Tony had so much to say, that even when Iswitched the audio cassette offl just had to switchit back on again as he continued to talk aboutother aspecb ofhis students whilst there were onan out of body experience- For instance, Tonyspoke about one of his subjecG who describedactually being inside a household fly (!!!)Initially she saw a fly (a shiney green fly thatlooked like a bluebottle but was actually a fly)sitting on a piece of wood. Tony asked thissubject to magnify what she was looking a! tentimes, which she did and she started to describelhat. Tony $en asked her to magni6, il len limesmore, then 100 times. Tony said that his subjectwas describing all the haiN on it the eyes werehexagonal and all sorts ofthings like that- Tonythen asked her to magniry it a thousand times towhich the subject said, "Well I've gone inside itoow and I can see outside ofit's eyes". The fly atthis point left the piece ofwood and started to flyaround and lony's subject was s when they comeback to their body too quick, it can be a verydisturbing and shocking experience, would yousay that your subjects have experienced that?

(TB) I have experienced that myself. I felt a bitdisoriented ard sick for a while and then I was.Now there are quite a few of lhese in quite a fewback rooms of London hospitals. And I reckonthat this is quite a good thing because ultimately adoctor f.om one ofthose hospitals is going to say,'Ah, I see that you've go! one of these as well".And so it will stafl to become

place.

But what would thatdoclor use that for?

CIB) Well they are expedmenting on aheredstates of consciousness. Even before we foundout about lhe Out Of Body Experiences we weregetting healing results, like in some cases wewould get healiDg occurring at five times thenormal predicted spe€d for healing for lhat type ofinjury.

tMR) And how much do you sell your devicesfor Tony, *hat is your standard rate?

(TB) This one (points to Bio-Energiser) isf280:00.

(MR) And what is the tecbnique to use one ofthese things, what would happen ifyou put one ofthese machines on?

(TB) You could starr feeling a bit uplitud.

(MR) But could i! work lhe other way as well, ina negative way?

(TB) Well I suppose it could, but it's usually an

uplifting thing.

(MR) Now when you have been fiaveling in thisout of body stale with your other pupils, hasanybody actually physically saw, someone else inan out ofbody state. ?

(TB) Oh yeah, that's very common.

that'l96and then I got told that I couldl!!or triedto do that actual thing to you,y were really

frightened ofl?(IB) W, have thm,for around 2 or3 years 's devicod and started to fly around with'ssubject and which can effect the individual. ysay.(MR) But what did th€y describe?

(TB) There seem to be a number of principleappearances. Sometimes they will see themclothed as per normal, sometim€s they see peoplein the nude. and sometimes they see them incovered in white garmenls. And then sometilrlesthey see people as poinls of light or spheres oflight, linle spheres of light.

(MR) Tony this is July 21st 2000, when was thelast time you had an out ofbody experience?

CfB) Oh I think I had a couple last yeat I don'tlhink I've had this year.

(MR) But have you not tried to bring one on thisyeat'l

(TB) Well I'd love to be able to bring it onvoluntarily whenever I \pant but I've not crackedthat one yet.

(MR) Couldn't you get someone else to do it foryou?

(TB) Ildoesn'tseem towhen they come back to their body too quick, itcan be a v€ry disturbing and shocking experience, would you say that your subjects haveexperienced that?

(TB) I have €xperienced that myself I felt a bitdisoriented and sick for a while and then I wasfine, you could get a bit of a headache, but it canbe a bit ofa disconcerting experience but itwhen they come back to lheir body too quick, itcan be a very distuding and shocking experience, would you say that your subjects haveexperienced that?

(TB) I have experienced that myself I felt a bjtdisoriented and sick for a while and then I wasfine, you could get a bit ofa headache, but it canbe a bit of a disconcerting experience but it's onethat you soon recover from as far as I know.

(MR) Would you say that the out of bodyexperience causes any fu(her physical aliments, Imean, the more you do this, will this go againstthe body so to speak?

(TB) I would say that the opposite is nue in myexperience it is a very healing and upliftingexperience. It can help a person physically. it canhelp a person emotionally and psychologically itcan h€lp in many many ways. It can be harmfulto a pe6on who is not in the right state of mindfor it.

(TB) Well work,l've tried that.

(MR) But all these other people can do it Ithoughl that maybe you could as well?

(TB) Well these other people can do it withoutme, In some respects, once I have shown themhow to do h they can do it themselves and it's notnecessarily me that has to show them how to do it.

(MR) Butwhy is it notwo*ing for you?

(TB) I asked one of these claiwoyant peopie ifthey could tell me why it's not working for meand she said well it will in the tuture you'll gainthe faculty in lhe future I make a pretty muchstandard model really. I can make them a lotmore powerful, I could make them less powerful. Some people want a pocket sized one, but it'svery dilficull to make a pocket sized one becauseyou canl gel the parts into a pocketsized one. Atone point I was planning to make a 'Bio-Ene.giser' room, i.e., that the walls of the roomwould be the 'Bio-Energiser'. As far as I'mconcemed, il would be perfectly feasible to makesuch a thing.

(MR) I mentioned earlier in the conveEation, youjust have to have a bit ofpatience. And then she

said thal there is some kind of blockage in youraum which is causing this difliculty and it's onlyunde. cenain circumstances that you willexperience it. So she said that it !*as somerhing in

the auia that was causing it. Well I don't knowabout that,I'lljusl have to take her word for it.

BUFOR Bulletin 23 Page 9

Page 10: l---- t2-bufora.org.uk/documents/BUFORABulletin2No.23Feb2001.pdf · 4 Robin Lindsey Remembered 8 Concluding the Interview With Tony Bassett, by Malcolm Robinson t4 Sighting Summaries,

(MR) Now when you are in this out ofbody stateTony, have you tried to go through walls, haveyou tried to go through ceilings, and if so whatdid that feel like, or did ir nor feel like anything?

(TB) Well that's a very interesting questionactually because that is a highly variableexperience. ln some cases what seems solid isstill solid and then it seems that you'can'gothrough it, it depends on your own state ofbeingif you will. Sometimes you can drift sfaightlhrough a wall or straight through a ceiling orthrough a \rhole building, then sometimes there isa very son of interesting half way stage whereyou can actually put yo r hand on a solid objectand feel that it's there and your not disturbing theobject, you just go through it and you can feel it,feel the texture of it as you go through. And alsosometimes you can change your degree ofperception to where you can see inside objecls.

(MR) You can see inside objecls !

(TB) .You can see inside objects. There was avery interesting case eilher in late 1993 or early1994 I had a man whose body was riddled withcancer and I had him go into an oua of bodyexperience and hover above his own body andlook at ir. lhen I got him ro look rhrough il so tharhe could see the cancer inside his body. Hedecided that after seeing this horrible thing insidehis body he was determined to kick it out. Nowsix weeks later he was totally clear ofcancer, andhe \vas clear of cancer for a further seven yeanthat's when I last contacted him and as far as Iknow, it didn't come back.

(MR) How do you know rhat he didn'r ger rid ofthis naturally?

(TB) well I helped him. I gave him varioustreatments and it was partly that and partly hisown determination.

(MR) So was it a desired thought process lo geldd ofil?

(TB) Well that helped very much bu! I gave himspecific forms ofhealing to help him achieve that.

(MR) So would you say that you are more ofahealer yourself Tony?

(TB) Definitely. Ijoined a group ofheale.s whohelped me lo leam healing and I've done quite alot ofhealing. I'm not with a group ofhealeN arthe moment so I don't go in for it in a big way butI do it occasionally.

(MR) Apan frorn being a healer, would you saythal you are apsychic, or are you no!psychic?

(IB) I'm psychic, I wouldn'l say that I'm a greatpslchic I'djust say that l m a litlle bit psychic.

(MR) And can you do psychomerry?

CfB) A lifile bi! I wouldn't say rhat rhal wassomething that I'm really good at but I have hadsome interesting results wilh it.

(MR) Now when people are in rbis out ofbodystate some people claim !o have seen what's like asilver umbilical cod sEetching from the materialbody to th€ spirir body. Do your subjecls relaythar?

CtB) Oh yes. Now some people are just notaware ofit theyjust don't notice it or ifyou drawit to their attention they'll discard it and it'susually a silvery colour or a silvff blue colour. Now I'v€ had some very interesting accounts, forinstance this silver cord it actually plugs into thebody. The general opinion is, if it comes awaythe body dies. And I've had a report ofsomebodywho was psychically attacked and thoseperpetrators actually caused the cord to separatefrom the body and there were several other peoplewho were out of the body as well and theywitnessed this and apparendy some beings of thespirit world

(MR) Are you do this, will rhis go against rhebody so to speak?

(TB) I would say that the opposite is true in myexperience it is a very healing and upliftingexperience. It can help a person physically, it canhelp a pefson emotionally and psychologically tillwith it. The witness said that it was incredible,

$at i! was like being inside a jet fighter plane. The fly then appioached some floweis to whichthe subject said that the flowers werc massive andshe was whizzing by it at such an incrediblespeed. This experience only lasted about a minuteor so and then she came back to normal. Tonyalso went on to explain to me (which is quiteincredible) that some of his subjecrs had alsoexperienced ants consciolsness (!!!) Ants, asTony explained, have a social consciousness.Other people, Tory said, had expeienced theconsciousness of a tree and varioirs plants. Hissubjects had also experienced the consciousnessofprehistoric monsters, ape men.

(MR) The 'Bio-Energiser' that you have here, how ofren do you prcduce these, do you buildthem occasionally. or are you burlding lhem allthe time?

(IB) t fy to have a stock ofthem, but I find itvery hard and difficult to have a stock of ihembecause people come and buy them, so I mean, atthe modenq I don't even have one for myself lfsomebody came and desperately wanted one, Iwould sell them the one that I use mysell I'vegot one here halfrnade.

(MR) And whatcomprises rhe manufacture ofit?

(TB) Tle pans for ir are all fairly standard partsnothing esoteric about the construction ofit, it's avery standard piece ofequipment.

(MR) Is each 'Bio-Energiser' set for the samelevel of outpul of can you .up. lhe output ondifferent Bio-Energisers' lo create a morequicker possible out of body experience, or is itjust a straight manufacture of fie sn"ightcomponents for every one?

(TB) Well I make a preny much standard modelreally. I can make rhem a lol more powerful, Icould make fiem less powerful. Some peoplewanr a pocket sized one, but il s very dimcull lomake a pocket sized oDe because you can.l get theparts inlo a pocket sized one. Al one point I $asplanning to make a'Bio-Energiser'room. i.e.,that the walls of the room woutd be the .Bio-Energiser'. As far as I'm concemed, it woutd be

perfectly feasible to make such a thing.

(MR) I mentioned ea.liei in the convesationabout you assisting BUFORA with research, wewould be very interested lo see one of your'Bio_Energiser's' in action once you have buihanotherone, you have one halffinished here?

(TB) Well this one here is sold already, as soonas I've made one somebody wan6 it so I'll haveto make some more. I would be more than happyto help BUFORA. I'm really keen on il. you seeto g€t them more powerful you can have morethan one ofthem, you can two or three ofthem inthe room at the sam€ time and switch them on. IfI happen to have one or two of them, then we'lluse the lot.

At this point in the interview, Malcolm Robinsonexpressed his desire and that of BUFORA'S forTony to cooperate with experimentation in thenear future where BUFORA researcher's andother researchers, could all meet up with a view (oleaming what Tony's 'Bio-Energiser' can do (ornot as the case may be!) Malcolrn explained thatwe should also have sceptics, debunkers andpeople fiom 'other persuasions' to aftend thisexperirnenhl nighl to see what may lranspireTony replied that he would be extremetvinterested in co-operating with BUFOM.

(MR) You mentioned &at some of you subjectshave visited other planec. bur have your subjecrsever seen whal is more commonty seenthroughout westem Europe these small greycrcatures!!

(TB) Oh the greys. I'm not really sure acrually, Ithink some years ago somebody saw one butwe've not made what you would call ,definitive

contacC wilh them not in tenns ofcommunicationor rhings of rhat narure. I've spoken rc peoplewno seem to be tn comrnunication with the greyssome telepathically but I've never been able tomake any sense of those communications. Therehas always beer very negalive communication, and I'm not convinced that that's the greyslhemselves that are saying thar. I,ve got a feelingthat rn some respects they may want rocommunicale with us.

heat,

(MR) Is the air ionised when this machine isturned on which somehow helps an out of bodyexperience to occur?

(TB) It's not so much that rh€ air is ionised thenegative ions and lhings like thal are notparticularly the rclevant faclor. What is therelevant factor is a magnetic effect and also anelectrical effect it's tbose two. These pmduce apretty slong magnetic field. And I tried makingsome that just had the electrical field without themagnetic field and I got them retumed, peoplewant the combination. This combination of a

magnetic field and an electrical field is what doesthe business and as I k€ep saying, it's very similarto what happens during a thundeNlorm-

(MR) Do you know a researchq called AlbertBudden?

(TB) Yes I do actually.

(MR) With UFO and paranormal witnesses, quileoften you will find if someone has had anelectrical incident in their iife or has been near alightning strike, they will have a lifetime then ofparanormal experiences afier ahat. And so we aieworking oo the premise that the electromagnetic6elds are crucial to this whole paranormalbusiness, this is a thing that Albert would be veryinteresled in - a machine that produced a field ofthe right strength to facilitate what we might callpsychic powers.

(TB) Alben has been here a few times but Ihaven't se€n him for arcund 2 or 3 years I guess,Iseem to get on O.K. with him and we'v€ hadsome pretty interesting chats. He went away lobuild something and that was the last I heard fromhim. I hope he has done well with it and I wouldlike lo say hi to hirn again.

(see Alben Budden's thoughls on Tony s deviseat de close ofthis article)

(MR) Tory, I'll Ieave lhe last word with yourself, ifyou couldjust say in a number of words abouthow you see your device and the experiences in

general !

(TB) What I feel is lhat there is a really tenificpotential here which is untapped at the mornentand the potenlial extends in many directions. Itextends into the field of healing and pamnormalInvestigations, UFO5, and states of humanconsciousness, space tmvel. Now one can alsoproduce magnification of it in the sense that youcan travel within ihe confines of atoms and see

the structure of thern etc. Now also it seems thatin the realns of language translation lhat one ofthe things that can be done in an out of bodyexperience is to enter into the consciousness ofanother persor in the past oI the future. Whenone does tbat, one doesn't in general influencethat person but whatever language their speakingyou seem to be able to instantly !'anslate it intoone's one language so it strikes fte from a

tmnslation point ofview rhis could lead into manymany fields ofporendal benefit to human nature.

(MR) Tony, fascinating subject, it's beenfascinaling talking to you this evening I do wishyou well with your future studies with this and Ido bope lhat you and I with BUFORA can wo*together in the near future as a research body tosee if we can test the water with previous UFOencounters, ie, if we can go back in time and testthe water to see what we could uncover throughan out ofbody visit to a prior UFO eDcounler.

(TB) Well, BUFORA have a femendous recordof such things and if we can select a few people,we can give it a try. And I would say lhat theideal set up would be to have a group of peoplepreferably some of them ought to be a littlepsychic anyuvay as that type ofperson seems to beable to go funher and more easier and so forthand also those people who are not psychic at allcan come along, we can have a little group maybe8,10, people whatever and onc€ I'v€ got solnemore machines available we can go ahead.

(MR) Tony, lhank you v€ry much.

All in all, our interview with Tony Bassett provedto be quite an interesting and thought-provoking

afternoon. Of course Tony doesn't strand alonewhen it comes to thes€ out ofbody experiences, there are ihousands if not millions of people tbeworld over who each have a tale to tell aboul theirown particular experience. So what's going on?Arc these experiences genuine, genuine in thesense that these individuals are able to leave theirbody, and go into some folm of altered strate ofconsciousness and somehow interact with a newand tolally dilferent environment? Or are allthese experiences, (each and everyone of them)misleading, fanciful, imaginative and downrightwishful lhinking on the pan of people with adesire for manipulative imagination and storytellingl!

Clearly there is no smoke without fire, thatsomething is going on is evidenl, evident with theihousands of world wide testimonies that havebeen gathered throughout the years and indeed are

still being gathered. I personally believe that a lotof these experiences (not all) buta lot ofthem, arelotally genuine and are catapulting people into

different dimensions, dilTeren! wavelenglhs ofbeing which at this point in time we cannorcomprehend or come to terms with. Tony'sdevice can, he claims, bring these experiencesstraight to the fore. At the time of v,rriting(October 2000) I am still waiting to test theseclaims, and test them I will. Stories are one thing, bul as a researcher I have to test !o the limit anyclaims of this naturc, hence I and others fromBUFORA will certainly take these claims and tryand pull them apart, find out what makes themvr'ork. Is it Tony's box of tricks that is thephenomenon herc,? Or is it purely the expectantmind of the individual keen to try a new andinvigorating experience? Come what may myselfand others are on the fiIst rung of a very tallladder, a ladder which we aim lo climb and onceat the top, who knows what we may find!l

Some recent reporls made lo my local group, including a possible FT fap' last autumn. Onlyone of these repo s relates to the 'working area'of the local group. 22 October 2000-12-2000 - Larne. N. IrelandDescription by the wihess - RK:"while observing the milky-way with my step-son, we noticed a triangular formaaion whichappeared to be three satellites moving due eastthrough Pegasus in unison. We watched the

formation for about 2 minutes after which theobject forming the apex faded to nothing in about2 seconds, the lower lefthand object also fadedout in about 2 seconds but 5 seconds later, thethird object then faded out after a further 5

seconds. Expecting this to be a group ofsatellites which would retum in around 90minutes (puzzled though we were by theirremarkable proximity to one another and thedisplay of appar€nlly synchronised behaviour) wewaited until 22:15 and continued observing until22:45 with no turther sightings. We watched thearea of the sky about 20 degr€es to the west ofwhere lhe objecls were first sighted which wouldhave corresponded to tbe point-oiretum had thisbeen a group ofsalellites. All tbree objects faded within 10-15 seconds ofeach other The probability of this is low in thecase of independently moving objects. Over thecouEe of 2-3 minutes the triangle forrned by theobjects did not change shape indicatingsynchronised moveme of some son. The highdegree of apparent synchronisation in movementwould indicate that the objects were closetogether. This is not what one would €xpect ofsatellites. The formation did not pass over anyslars during our sighting so we could dot say thatwhether it was opaque or not. We had lheimpression that we were looking at three singleobjects moving in formation. The speed of the

objec6 was about the speed of a satellite as

usually observed, and the brightness was 4th.magnitude. Weather: exceptionally clear night(structure of milky'way plainly visible).

Analysis - This would appear to be an exanple ofa sighting of a dustet of NOSS satellites passingovel (For an excellent aflicle by Tony Ecclq onNOSS misidentilications, see BUFOM Bulktin#17/!8). However, we know fron .tialogue withthe wilness, lhal as a keen amaleur aslronomer,he b conlident of the nagnitude of around +4.Satellite data for NOSS (available fron GSOC)suggests that none of the NOSS satellites tend tobe brighter than +5 - which makq sense fot:uwei ance satellites. Also, the published datodoes not match the Jlightpath seen by thewirnesses - however, as Tony Eccles reninds us, itshould be remenbered that NOSS are nilitarysurveillance solellites, and as such, publisheddata cannot be consitlere.l totally reliable.

2 November. 2000 - Didcot. OxfordshireWhile out stargazing, with an exceptionally clearsky (after yet another day's iain), the witness'CK' had his anention grabbed by Jupiter'goingout' at the edge of his vision. He tumed to lookdirectly at that part of the sky, and noted a

densely-black triangle passing over to his east, going on a north !o south course. Sometimes it is

h6rd to envisage how a black object can be seen

as black against a'black' night sky, but ofcouNewith geneial light pollution, as well as light fromthe moon and staN, the rcsulting night sky can bea less than a totally dark background. CK was leftwith the impression that this FT almost seemed tobe absorbing surounding light - it was thatdensely black, with a clearly defined edge. It wasflying southwards fairly quickly, and whileheight, and therefore speed, was difncult tojudge,it was much faster than a normal airliner on a

similar course. The FT flew with no soundwhatsoever, but of course with the shong winds

blowing, the night was not 'quiet', so any noisefiom the FT may have not been discemible. There was no tight source at all on the FT. TheFT was lost to sight in less than l0 seconds.

Anab)sb - Not unusually, no conJirmation of aknown aircraft has let been obtained by militaryor commercial ATC.

3 November.2000 - Ipswich. SuffolkA report by the witnesses:

"l saw something last night that I and anotherfiiend have not been able to explain and can onlydescribe as a UFO."

"l had been at a firework party in the SE oflpswich and had watched a display put on by theIocal speed\ray venue 1For, all Stadiun - Edl .

At about 10.30pm, well after the display finished,we were outside with a small bonfire cookingmaBhmallows. Being a particula.ly clear night wewere obsewing the very brightly illuminated starstrying to make out their pattems when what a!first appeared to be a group ofstars moved r.pidlyove. thal sector ofthe sky and disappeared. Thisconsisted ofa fiangle ofpoint ligbts with a founhlight in the cenrre moving generally sourhward. The movement was panicularly rapid and unlikeany of the other aircraft lighls that we regularlysee over this part ofSuffolk moving in an easterlydircction. They were all white in colour and notlike the white/red/green ofan aircraft.

The observation was over very quickly but seen

and commented on by myself and a friend. Weare both certain that it was NOT a firework of anydescription because of its flightpath.""l have not seen anything like this before and canonly put this down to a UFO or possibly a

sat€llite - but one with four lights I have not seen

before."

Analysis - Unfo unately, atlempts to encouragelhe wilness to provide some more delails, particularlf ovet the speed of the objects haeenet i'ilh no rcspohse so far This makesanabEing some aspects dilfrcult when we seek tomatch knos/n salellile dtla (which were strangely

few in number over tha! area that night).Hoy'/erer, since the witness suggests a high spee.lof flight, satellite nbidenriJications woukl seenunlikely.

ll Januarv.200l - M20. nr Snodland. KentThe witness NK', was travelling alone along theM20 near Snodland between 10.45 and 10.50pm.His attention was taken by three large steadybright yellow lights in an equilateral formationabove the motorway, at probably no more than200m up. NK was travelling at about 70mph, andhe was so taken aback and intrigued by the lightsthat he slowed up, and almost veered offthe road!He rapidly came up ftom behind to go under thelights, and as he was now doing around 50mph,this seemed strange to him, as he was apparentlyovertaking what he took to be aircrafa lights, soany such aircraft was moving impossibiy slowly.

As he went under the lights, they dimmed, andNK could make out a clear triangle. The lightswere too far apart for them to be a helicopter, andtherc was no sign of the normal navigation ligh6that all aircrafr are obliged to display, and whichshould have been obvious so close. No soundwas heard, but with general roadnoise, and a CDplaying, then extemal sounds may not have beenobvious.

NK went home and surfed websites for UFOgroups to report his sighting to.

Letters SectionLONG.TIME EXPERIENCER, ERNIESEARS, OFFERS A POINT'OF VIE'I TOBRIAN ALLAN (SPI & BUFORA)

Having read Brian Allan's two-pager in the lastSUFOG magazine; his FOURTEEN PAGES inthe August 2000 BUFORA BULLETIN; plushis l0 page altemative evaluation' ofthe "ScoleExperiment" book - which I have .(teasingly, oreven provocatively) entitled by Brian"Whistling in the Dark", I have added rhe lad tothe likes of Albert Budden and (excuse me,Kev) Kevin Mclure, not forgetting StuartCampbell - none of whom seem !o have hadmuch actual experience of what we still caltUFOS, or "ghosts", or "poltergeists", or"healing", or "time travel" which my ownexperiences led me to call that "precognition"or in modem parlance "remote viewing, alongwirh "OOBE 's", "contact wirh the dead", and asudden or increased "awareness" ofthe welfareofthis planet. As Whitley Strieber says in his 1996 bookConfirnation (Simon and Schuster); whatinduces close encounter memories is no gardenvariety stress, and Whitley's foregoing list is byno means total, mosl of which I can claimexperiences of. - not sll. .bul most - sometimeswith witnesses!

Brian probably doesn't know thal my veryrecent talk for BUFORA in London includedthe showing of photographs, sharp, and in futlcolour, etc, taken in 1999 in broad daylight, which appear to show (since no one has anyother explanation).a "dead" relative of a closefriend, exactly superimposed over her figurebut wearing differently coloured clothes, whilethe surrounding scenery is "normal" My talkalso included that l9th May video by ourSouthampton UFO Croup (SUFOC) Sk)'watchteam. Plain to see how an aircraft circled that"light" twice over Southampton Waler, yet allauthoriti€s locally and furth€r afield denied

anything was'up', while the Under Sec.etaryof State for Defence, Dr Moonie, rotallyignored the film and gave me lhe usual'nodefence significance'. Add to that (and myhopefully nearly finished book has many moresuch items over sixty years) the sighting of adaylight object in 1960 which was vainlypursued by two hurriedly scrambled Meteorjetsalso totally denied by the airbase concemedwithin ten minules. The UFO vanished inro rheclear blue March moming sky, leaving the jetsfloundering.'Electromagnetic radiation',B.ian? Black technology? Take rhe postskywatch experiences in the Royal VictoriaPark h€re where I live on SouthamptonWaterside ("A Strange Nigh!".. in SUFQGmagazine) Brian's list in the SUPOGmagazine. of wha! probably did affect the"haunted" chapel threw everlhing at it!However, SUFOC membeis who were thereexperienced a real happening since one ofthem"became" one of the "soldiers" milling aboutnear the chapel and was actually approached bya "nurse" who "spoke" to him comfortingly, saying he would be 'alrighr now'. That litcandle in the topmost tower there was seen onboth occasions and by others, visitors and staff,in previous incidents. My own experiencesome years ago, again, in the village, when Iwas in the rather dark kitchen of the oldtefaced house I lodged in, of a smali dogcoming along the passage and going behind mewhen I thought I'd locked the landlady's Yorkiein the iounge is another case of how personalexperiences make such people the experts - notthe theorists or the sceptics. Retuming to thelounge while speaking to the dog I was amazedto see "Yorkie" sitting inside with his earscocked at my voice. Asking my landlady hadhe 'got ouf I was assured not- D€scribing theincident I said the little dog ['d seen had a lor ofhair, apparendy, around its neck, now I thoughtabout it. She got down a dusty old photo albumand tumed to a pholo of her "griffon" - -a sort

of Yorkshire terrier with a lion like mane, .ithad died som€ years previously.Trying to keep this brief (an impossibility, when endeavoring to reason with Brian'sfourteen pages) could I ask him ifthose Meteorpilots had been near some electric pylons, ashad the control tower officers, or had I? That"ghost dog" - the same question. Had the outof the body experience I had in 1933 (an agewhen not too many electronic masts etc wouldbe around, if any) been that "olher reality" I amaware exists. .l was aged nine at the time bythe way - no UFO'S knowD ofthen eitherl

Well, anyway, I'm not disposed to argue thecase that Bdan puts, pity he didn't aftend mytalk on the 6th November, I gave thern bothbarels from 1933 right up to the present dayand as James Millen, of the Witness SupportCroup I belong to, based in Londoo, said, .hewas present "I left the audience feeling whai itwas really like to be caught up in the 'CloseEncounter' experience and it's after effects"Hey, I didn't ftention the "angel" stuff, did I,with it's 'coincidental' follow up on the Kilroyprognmme on "Why I believe in Angels?Cosh, better not get on that track! Read mybook if ever it comes out - 15 years in thewriting. or ask someone who was al the Buforatalk I did!All in all, Brian Allan's marathon articles leftmany questions unanswered while soundingjust plausible - on very few .he 'assumes'toomuch and like most sceptics leaves out what hehasn't got an answer for, or twists the factsslightly. His only saving grace is that he leavesthe unsolvable to one in the BUFORABULLETIN described as such .ie; TheLivingstone case.

Taking his August 2000 BUPORA anicle inmore detail, if I dare, Brian goes for those'neuial', theories, the writings of Carl GustavJung; 'collective unconscious', and theaforementioned Alben Budden's'impressivebody of 'corroborative evidence' for thatelectromagnetic solution, before going on to the'black technology' - which of course partlyexplains some of the sightings currently. However, I venture to again dmw attention to

that 1960 sighting I had - surely two aggressiveMeteor jets wouldn't have been launched in ahell of a hurry to intercept that 'glowing cigar'that used highly unonhodox technology toescape, after hoVering for over 30 minutes overa highly sensitive naval establishment had thecraft be€n a UK product? The clincher, as Isaid in my BUPORA talk, was that my thenbrother in law, who worked as an electricaldraughtsman at th€ naval complex, tumed upthe very next evening at my home on a socialvisit. Wlile waiting fol my wife (who wasmaking him tea), I indulg€d in lightconversation and suggested his workplace hadhad a bit ofa crisis' the previous moming. Hisface tumed white. His mouth set in a grim line,he was, Iiterally lost for words! I realised hehad a duodenal ulcer that had been troublinghim and changed the subject. We never spokeofit again although he used !o cast a very waryeye over my growing collection ofbooks!

Well, there's much, much more that BrianAllan writes in the various outlets he seems tohave chosen. I might just mention rn passinghis scom directed at the members of the ScoleExperiment. asking why lhey have ro srnghymns and say pmye6 before attempting(successfully it seerns), to contact other, apparenr,'dimensrons', including those whereinour dear departed live and work!. Having been'involved' at such meetings in my intense searchfor the answers to it ALL, UFO'S included, Iallowed for the routines which I gathered werea prelude to manifestations that se! up a

vibrational entrance. Merely another way ofallowing for rhe modem quantum physics, since I can use my'mind' for such, not only inmy healing but for'conlacr'- rhe latter beingdemonstrated iwo years running at our Aveburysk)'watches - as BUFORA chairman BrianJames etc can vouch for- (See Brian's articleon Avebury in BUFORA Bulletin #20; APRA'SSynchronicity #2, and SUFORC BULLETIN#20)

My closing comment on Brian Allan's prolificwritings draw serious attention to his endparagBphs in the BUFORA BULLETIN

article: 'Quantum mechanics and theoreticalrcsearch show the way as man strives formastery over his environment and the laws ofphysics'; and 'will mankind finally attain it'sdestiny and become 'Masters OfThe Universe',instead of wrecking, and fouling his ownplanet?' There speaks the oracle, sadly, encapsulating what is wrong with the Path wehave chosen. Meanwhile, back to the future....By Bob Digby

The purpose of this brief article is to requestfeedback and debate from tbe membership overwhar I think is the mosl imponant decisioncunently facing Bufora.

Let me ask up ftont for feedback to come viaeither:-E.Mail : [email protected] Snail mail at:Evolution, P.O.Box 633, Beaconsfield, HP9 2GL

what is this big decision ? Quite simply, whetherthe company should carry on as it is in its presentform or whether to lake the "next step" by desrgnmther than the slower process ofevolution.

Last Summer, Brian James and I jointlysponsored a conference at a pleasant public housein the Oxfordshire countryside. The purpose wasto review Bufora's history, what lessons could be -

leamed, wherc we arc now and discuss possiblefirture scenario's. In addition we has some briefpresentations on other organisations and whatworked or didn't for them.

I thiDk one key conclusion was lhat Bufora'scunent status as a limited company costs a lot ofmoney to maintain, given a declining market. Itwas originally a forerunner to becoming a charityof scientific status. This we failed !o get. Thesman move would have been to apply foreducational status but we cannot do that using thepresent registered company format. It also begsthe question of whether trying to become an

educational charity is the righr goal anyway.Unfortunately, the present codpany vehiclecannot take us forward but does offer limitedliability to the membership.

Bufora is fast approaching its 40th birthday(counling from 1962) but the rnodem day is verydifferent to the era when the organisation started.

Also, so are lhe people and their expectations. Ifwejust take ihe Intemet, this alone has influencedhow people now obtain information and exchangeit, without the need to physically attend meetings.

Author John Spencer made an interesting poinltoo about being unable to write about UFOSwithout touching on olher areas of lheparanormal. So in a nutshell, this goes to the heanofthe question r "what business are we in?" andalso, what is the best vehicle for us to achiev€ ouraims and objectives ? The subjecl of Ufology is

made funher more interesting in that it has

evolved in nature since those days in 1962 whenwe staned. We are now dealing with a verydifferent animal in content and nature.

This is fie point where I would like to throw open

th€ debate.. Do you think we should carry on,

business as usual or are you convincedthat we need to evolvc along with oursubject?

. Would you prefer to subscribe to e

magazine rather than to an organisation?. Do you r{ant more via the lnteroet or do

you value social contact?. How can ne strik€ a happy balance?

I will prepare a dossier for lh€ council ofmanagementbased on your replies and am willingto support another mini-conference to help get tothe most effective solution.

Convicted Crop CircleConstructor Confabulates To Bufora

Ar the BUFORA meeting on 8th January,Matthew Williams, 29, replaced the irascible,Albert Budden. Matthew spoke disarminglyabout how he came to be convicted, suggestingthat it was a misunderstanding. He alsoshowed us how he and his colleagues had madethe Basket formation using a surveyor's tapeand stomper-boards.

Before dealing with the substance of Matthew'stalk, it is relevant to say a Iittle about hisbackground. A few years ago, he wasdismissed from the Civil Service, allegedly forworking on his Truthseekers Review in officialtime. Around 1976/77 he targeted a seniormernber of BUFORA. This had a dominoeffect, which brought the Association velyclose to insolvency. lt was also widely knownthat while researching UFOS, he talked aboutentering underground MoD bases. Morerecently he moved to Bourton near Devizes toinvestigate crop circles. Matthew has beenaccused ofbeing apublicity seeker. Worse - hehas been accused of sending threatening e-mails to Wiltshire-based crop-circleenthusiasts. Both Jenny Randles and PhilipMantle objected to him being ailow€d to speakat this BUFORA meeting. Francine Blake, edtlot of The Spirdl (Wiltshire CCS Group),allegedly contacted the Byng Place QuakerC€nfe, asking for Matthew to be proscribed. The Centre took no action.

The meeting was ably co-ordinated by JudithJaafar, BUFORA'S new Vice-Chairman, atByng Place, WCl. Amongst the audience ofsome three dozen were Michael Green,President, and Carole Cochcrane, newChairman of the CCCS, plus other CCCS

members. Marcus Allen, UK distributor ofNEXUS was there. Matthew, said he wasrcluctant to talk about making further circles ashe did not want to risk a further encounter withthe police. He show€d us the "Seven PointStar" formation, which made him the lirstperson in Britain to be fined for causingcriminal damage lo crops by making a design inwinter wheat (at Manor Farm, West Overton. )He was arested after photographs posted onthe Intemet were sent to detectives. Matthew mused that if ETs were creating theformations, why was it that their quality variedin differcnt countries? Investigations DiaryCompiled by Gloria Haether Dixon

In my investigations report for lhe forthcomingACM, stalistics show that the number of reportsto BUFORA for 2000 are still falling. wereceived 163 reports last year and of those 23would be categorised as r€pons with a highstrangeness factor. Therefore l47o of reportscoming inlo BUFORA are not just anomalouslighls or objects, but have many componenls, which do not always actually include a UFOsighting. It is evident, therefore, that reports toBUFOM cover a vast range of anomalies andperceived strange experiences, which lie outsidethe dormal parameters ofobsewations of unusualaerial objec6. This has been the case for manyyears in the modem day era of UFOS as

interpretations change and evolve within thecufient day thinking and captivating images lhatsudound us in our exploration of space- Inaddition to this are the effects of space agetechnology and imagery, which appear to create a

direct link into how people perceive anomalousexperiences,

In order to broaden the controveEy surroundingthe increasing number of extraordinaryexperiences that are reported to BUFORA, Iwould like take a general look at the issue ofclaims ofalien encounters and abductions,

h is becoming increasingly evident that numerouspeople unde€o extraordinary experiences at timesin their lives, or at least experiences that theycannot define or even have the language or thecapacity to explain. We live in an age withamazing potenfial and wherc anything seems to bepossible due to our advanced technology. Moreand more infomation is accessible to an ever-increasing number of people, as they access theintemel $here UFO and paranormal sites are inabundance- In addition to this are manymagazines, book and television shows dealing

with the subject and spre-ading the mythology toliterally millions of people adding to thepenuasive imagery of the reality of alienabductions. Furthermore, we live in a scary ageof artificial intelligence development, medicaltechnology and fuluristjc weaponry and aircraftthat we possibly hale yel lo imagine. I believe iris no wonder that we look to those other worlds inotder to explain tbis one and to possibly feel thatwe have elusive connections to someihing else outthere that could either save us from ouselves orto guide us in other directions, as we question theme-aning of life, who we are and where we aregoing.

The idea that there are some people, who believethey have been abducted by aliens has beendowrloaded into our consciousness and wecannot get away from that. Whether this ishappening in the physical world is anotherquestion entircly and fiom my point ofview, I see

little evidence for lhis or ar least no de{iniliveproof that has ever been produced to give anycredenc€ to this idea at all. Ofcou6e the problemwith many ofthe cases is that regression h)?nosishas been used as a melhod to recover informationabout lhese experiences and there are majorproblems with this very controveNial method, together with the faci that memory retrieval evenfiom yesterday can be less tban accumte. Thebiain is very selective about what it feels we needto remember about various events on a dailybasis, therefore the use of hypnosis will notenhance the memory from the point ofview ofanobjective truth about the event.

However. all thrs aside. there are an increasingnumber ofpeople including children, who conlactUFO organisations about stlnge and disrurbingexperiences- We cannotjust ignore this because itwill not go away. There is no doubt at all thatmental health issues are involved in some ofthese

cases together wi$ factors such as attentionseeking, sheer hoaxes and misperception ofconfusing dreams etc. But beyond all the aboveexplanations there remain reports from ordinarypeople, who undergo extraordinary events andlook to UFO and pa.anomal organisations foranswers because they perceive these experiencesto be alien encounters. Can you blame them? Therepresentations of what aliens may look like areconlained everywhere, fiorn science fiction tobooks, magazines and television notwithstandingall fte promolional advertisemenls for variouscompanies, which use the 'grey alien' face on ourscreens. In some ways it is deeply depressingbecause at this stage we do not even know whatcame firsl the chicken or the egg. Was the alienirnagery lhat we use based on what peopleconjured up frorn these experiences before the'grey alien' image ever invaded ourconsciousn€ss or do people use this imagerybecause we have constructed it fromrepresenlations used in all the literature and mediacoverage offi€ UFO subject.

To complicate matters further, this is where thedangeF can lie, as these reports normally lalloutside the remit ofUFO inv€stigatoE. However,it is my belief that we musl continue to supportand listen to the wimess wilh great care anilsensilivity bu! that support must also remaintotally objective during our investigations andresearch. We can also sometimes point them inthe direction of psychology to help underslandwhat these experiences may mean, We can lookfor parallels to their experiences fiom otheraccounts, as well as looking at the life profile ofthat peEon where, as many researchers are awarc,we find that many people reponing the closeencounter experience have in facl experiencedother unusual anomalies in their lives often of apamnormal nature. The late Ken Phillipsconducled $ork in fiis area on the AnamnesisProject together with the late Austrianpsychologist Dr. Alex Keul. One of theconclusions of this project was tha! UFOexperiencers are a reasonable cross-section ofthepopulation and not panicularly fantasy proneindividuals. There are certainly many pattemsthat emerge, but this still does not explain whypeople repo.t that they have had an alien

abduction experience. Cases of reported closeencounters during aitered states of consciousnessprior to sleeping or awakening could be explainedby 'sleep paralysis' and h,?nagogic states duringthese ahered sEles of consciousness prior losleeping and awakening and olher stales ofsleepsuch as false awakenings.

The questions surrounding these repofls are ofcou$e, a loaded gun with the immensecontroveEy surrounding it by the internationalUFO community, but it is obvious, to me anyway, that we need to examine consciousness in a farmore complex way in order to begrn ro

understand the human condition and the fragilearca ofthese reports. I think in a way Dr. PeterFenwick's statement in his book The Truth In lheLight gave an insight inlo these issues when hewrote 'science still does not undeEtand theconveFion of the objective world outside to thesubjective world of meaning.

I believe that there is no doubt that abductionclaims are part of a profound and importantphenomenon, but mystical experiences have takenplace since the dawn of mankind. It is just theinterpretation that has changed to fit the modelsand images that we see in loday's culture- ft ismy feeling that many ofthese claims will tell us

more and more about the human condition as ourbeliefs and modem-day mythology unfold.

During December 2000 and January 2001 I havelogged 39 reports showing quite a dramaticincrease in comparison to the amount ofsightingsrecorded for last year Some of these repons areonce again observations iiom several years ago. Iwould like to begin with the following sightingfrom SK, whicb occurred in Aueust 1978. Thisreport was originally recorded with BUFORA inthe 1986 and lhe original invesligator was pastBUFORA investigaror Mike woonen. Mikecould not find any oth€r information for thissighting. SK has now contacred BUFOM againand I would like to record his sighting, although itwas nearly 23 yea6 ago.

SK wri@s the following accounl ofthe incident inhis original repon form sent to Mike Wootten...

On the partjcular night in quesrion, myself andt\vo others were fishing for carp at ForwichDeeps, an extensive area of lakes abou! three !ofour miles east of Canterbury. The sky was veryclear and conditions were warm atd still-

At about l-l.30am Phil mentioned that a star wasacting oddly. Richard and myself ignored himand carried on fishing. At about 10-20 minulesafter his first commmt, which we had forgotten,Phil me[tioned the slar again and with someurgency drew our attentiolr to it. This time wewatched and we obse ed what appeared to be aIa.ge star at about 35-40 degrees above tbehorizon. It appeared to be moving in an eccentricway, making shoft daning movemen$ andstopping. As we watched we gave differentaccounts to explain the object.

The star then began to swell until it appeared tobe the size of a ten pence piece held at armsIength. By this time our altention was riveted dnthe star. We also realised that the object was notswelling, but approaching us in a shallow dive. Then the star changed its apparent form. [tabruptly became like three or four neon ba$ heldhorizontally and it was also obvious that theobject would pass very close to us. The Iigbtsappeared white. By now we were confused andas the object got neare. still we could finally seewhal appeared to be solid bars of light were infact single clusters oflight- The lights appearedto be constantly changing in colour. The colourshad a strange quality about them. They appearedto be alight in a way which cannot be easilydescribed. They had a wamth and inlensity aboutthem. Some ofthe colouN had no name.

By this time the object was directly overhead. Itwas about the size of a 45rpm recond disc(iemember those anyone... CHD) held at armslength. Also we had a chance to see the object. Itwas solid and dark against the sky and appeared

to be the shape ofan inverted shell with rows oflighr ringing it. lr was diflicult lo measure sizebecause it was like nothing we had everpreviously seen. I would say it wasapproximately the size of a semi-detached houseat maybe 500-?00 feet altitude. As il flew aboveand away from us in an easterly direction wecould see other characteristics we could notpreviously see, At no time was there any noiseIt appeared to be part ofthe night.

As it flew away, it appeared to be bobbingslightly and in a matter ofperhaps halfa minute ithad disappeared, headirg roughly towardsRamsgate. I would say it's speed varied at timesfrorn 200-500 mph (this would be v€ry dimcult toj!dge..GHD).

By this tirne we were most agitated. One ofmyfriends was on the verge ofrunning the mile or soro Sturry village and leaving hrs fairty expensivegear. My other friend ran up the path in pu$uit ofthe objecr.

About 5-10 minutes after the object disappeared, tlvo aircEft flew overhead in the same direction.I do not know whether the obj€c6 and jets wereconnected in any way, but we had fished in thisarea at night frequently and il was the only time Ican recall seeing aircraft in this area.

Obviously, this case is a majorproblem because itis now close to 23 years old- SK does not a havea specific date and on his original report form hasput the month as late June/early July with afurther possibility now of August, so what weprobably do know on lhis is that it was summer1978.

The witness was looking out of her kitchenwindow when she observed through the halfdrawn curtains an orange ball of light with abrilliantjade green tail. She appears to think ir was fairlyclose and that it actually landed, but obviously herline of vision was somewhat obscured.Obsewation time was about 2/3 three seconds.

This report certainly ties in with a wide area ofsightings ofa speclacular bolide on 8th February. There were reports to various UFO groups andsightings in the Sheffield, Liverpool, Cheshireand hncashire and as far south as Cloucester, inaddition to being covered by sorne of the localpress. seen, this brilliant bolide was observed in areasright across the UK.

There has also been recent speculation about thePeak District being in the c€ntre of a UFO flap, specifically the village of Bonsall, near Matlockin Derbyshire. This has been triggered by arecent two page spread in the Daily Mail and as isso often the case when a specific area is targetedas an arca fo. an upsurge of UFO repons andcovered by ihe national press, things snowballuntil a specific area becomes a centre for a UFOflap. Often this is not the case at all, but therewill be a continued upsurge in reporls in that arca,as people perceive odd lights and objects in thesky as being something other than the rathermundane objects they often are.

There was also an incident reported on Radio 5Live and the local Scottish Press, where pupilsfrom Laird Primary School in Sutherland repo.t€dsomelhing falling from the sky in the form of apowder, which made the pupils itchy. Th€ scboolwas closed for a short time. ContEry to otherspeculation and reported by the local press, thesource of this powder was from a light aircraftlhat had been spraying crops nearby. It was testddand declarcd non-toxic and the school was openedagain with no firrlher ill effects being recorded. This is not something we want to happen to ourchildren, but there was no more mystery to it thanthis.

To conclude this diary, I would like to letinvestigators know that there will be an NICmeeting in May/June 2001, which will be held inEaling, London, al the home ofJudy Jaafar- Thedare is ro be arranged, but ir will be held during a

BOOK REVIEWThe F.B.I. Files,

PUBLISHER: Simon & Schuster, Wesl cardenPlace, KendalStreet, London, W2 2AQ. Tel:

Nick Redfem is a well known and recognised faceon the UFO lecture circuit in Great Brilain, he isalso a prolific writer, his last book, 'A CoveitAgenda', focused on the British Covemment'sinvolvement in UFO reports long after theyclaimed lhey had stopped. His latest book, TheFBI Files, looks into America's FedeEl Bureau oflnvestigation's and their deep and overwhelmingpresence in regards to their own study andiDvolvement with the UFO phenomena. Tle FBIhave long denied that they ever studied UFOreporls, but Nick and many others have provedthat this was not so. The FBI have for many yeaNlied to their own public (and &e world) that theyhadn't been involved in UFO study. Nick blowsmore of their cover and presents a wealth ofinformation which not only stales $al AmericanMililary men had actually had face to facemeetings with 'beings' from elsewhere, but thatthe American Military Machine have manycrashed UFO'S in their possessionl!

Nick also presents information regarding alienabductions, and their reasons for doing so, hepresents many pre-classified Covemmentdocuments which clearly show that not only theFBI were involved in UFO research, but also theNSA (national Security Agency) as well. We alsotake a look at UFO technology that was acquiredby the Nazis during the 2nd world war and alsothose dapper dressed, MIB'S, (Men In Black) ofwhich the recent movie is not a case in point l!

There is so much cammed into this book, that itwould require more than lhis page to present themall, sullce it to say, that this book I'm sure, willalso be a besl seller. and will go a long way into

educating not only the British public, but thepeople of the world, that UFO'S are most certainlyreal, and they we.e, and still are, real enough forthe world's Govemment's ro take a long hardIook at what was/is going on. Nick presenls hisfacs honestly and carefully and the conclusionsreached point in only one way, that we are beingvisiled by 'beings' from elsewhere for purposesbest known to them. Tle genetic interbreedingprognmme mentioned therein, has been slaledelsewhere. The alarming cattle mutilations ofAmerica, disturbing in their presence are alsolooked at. The picore painted in this book is notfor the light heaned. This book will open up youreyes into the reality ofthe UFO phenomenon, andwill make you wonder when you cast your votefor whom you wish to be in power, that oncethere, they too, may not inform you as to wha!'sgoing on in regards to the ongoing UFO situation-Researchers like Nick are to be cornmended iD theinformation they provide, and I t?ke my hat offtothe man for showing the public thar the UFOsituation is so very, very real.
