Department of Media BA (Hons) Photography Summer Project POST TRUTH post-truth – an adjective defined as ‘relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief’. Oxford English Dictionary, Word of the Year, 2016. (https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/word-of-the-year/word-of-the-year-2016). Task: Make a Self-Portrait that makes reference to ideas of Post Truth. Consider: Post Truth. What is it? How does it relate to ideas of Photography? Consider issues of Photography and reality and truth; documents, evidence and proof. Social Media, Mass Media, Fake News, manipulation, staged photographs and fiction. Propaganda and its role in Politics and recent elections in UK and USA. Identities, alter egos, masquerades, online personas, avatars, fake ID. Consider: Self Portraiture. What makes a Self-Portrait? Look at the history of Self Portraiture and how this relates to the popularity of the selfie today. However, this image should go beyond the standard selfie; it should say something about you; push the boundaries of what a self portrait might be. Should it necessarily include the face or body? Could it be objects? Think about the Self Portrait in the context of Post-Truth.
