What is ‘food security’?
Food security is achieved when all people, at all
times, have physical, social and economic access to
sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their
dietary needs and food preferences for an active
and healthy life.

A note on cases studies
• We don’t have time to go over each one in class • You do have time at home to complete the case study
sheets OR make mind maps OR make cue cards. • Essentially they need to fit into the correct category to
illustrate the factor(s) which causes food supply issues. • Remember in the exam to structure by factor and not
by world mystery tour. I.e. Start by saying ‘Government policies can have a huge impact on the food supply chain. Governments can easily hold back supplies for an emergency, epically in countries with a large population. For example in India ….
How to structure
• Ideally how many case studies to use?
• What variables are there here?
1. Location ……………………………………………………………….
2. Scale …………………………………………………………………….
3. Food surplus and famine ………………………………………
Three suggested structures
• Bear in mind you may well choose which one depending on the exam question.
Suggestion 1 – Nutrition Spectrum
Suggestion 1 – Nutrition Spectrum
Suggestion 2 – Table (arguing the points for and against)
Urban Rural
Obesity
Famine
Urban Rural
Secure (M’croft)
Insecure (M’croft)
Urban Rural
Small scale (few people)
Large scale (100’s thousands)
Suggestion 3: Triangle graph
What 3 variables do we have in total?
1. Location ……………………………………………………………….
2. Scale …………………………………………………………………….
3. Food surplus and famine ………………………………………
