Miley Cyrus’ provocative performance during Mon-
day night’s “Teen Choice Awards,” in which she wore short shorts and boots and at one
point straddled a pole, has set off a firestorm on the Internet over whether the act was
appropriate for a 16-year-old entertainer in front of a youthful audience.
On YouTube and on Twitter, followers of the Disney Channel series “Hannah Montana”
debated whether Miley was doing a pole dance on top of a moving ice cream pushcart or
was simply hanging on to the pole for balance. Some found her sultry routine over the top
for the Fox award show, which attracted 4 million viewers — more than a quarter of whom
are under age 18 themselves, according to Nielsen ratings.
Internet gossip columnist Perez Hilton dubbed the performance “the return of Slutty
Cyrus,” and an impromptu Twitter poll attracted more than 4,000 votes — 65% of whom
said she looked like a stripper.

In what government andarts officials are calling themost ambitious commemora-tion of the 20th anniversary ofthe fall of the Berlin Wall out-side of Germany, a symbolic re-creation of the wall that onceseparated East and West Ber-lin will be erected across Wil-shire Boulevard in November.
The Wall Project, painted byprofessional and amateur art-ists, will close Sunday after-noon traffic on one of the city’sbusiest thoroughfares for threehours on Nov. 8 beginning at3 p.m. The project involves theCulver City’s Wende Museumand Archive of the Cold War,the city of Los Angeles, theGerman Consulate General in
Los Angeles and other part-ners, and will be officially an-nounced Thursday.
In a reenactment of the ac-tual events, invited dignitarieswill break down selected por-tions of the Wilshire wall, whichwill be placed directly in frontof the Los Angeles County Mu-seum of Art. Project leadersplan a live feed of the events be-tween Los Angeles and Berlin, official sister cities since 1967.(Because of the time differ-ence, it will already be Nov. 9 inBerlin, the day the wall camedown in 1989).
Professional artists who willparticipate include “ObamaHope” muralist Shepard Fai-rey, L.A. muralist Kent Twitch-ell and Berlin-based ThierryNoir, noted for painting hisbrightly colored human figureson the real wall in Berlin.Twitchell said that he plans tocreate portraits of the twopresidents who saw the begin-ning and the end of the BerlinWall, John F. Kennedy andRonald Reagan.

In a move that concedes ameasure of victory to long-termopponents, the Autry NationalCenter has bowed out of a pro-tracted battle for a $175-millionexpansion of its facility in Grif-fith Park.
City approval of the planhinged on a recent demand forthe Autry to make a legallybinding commitment to sup-port the Southwest Museum, located in Mount Washington,as a fully functioning art insti-tution in perpetuity. In a letterdelivered to members of theLos Angeles City Council Tues-day, the Autry stated that sucha commitment would be irre-sponsible and that it is with-drawing its proposal.
“Any further attempt to pro-ceed with the proposed expan-
sion project in Griffith Parkwould be an ill-advised diver-sion of our financial resourcesand an insupportable distrac-tion from our work in servingthe community,” Autry Presi-dent John L. Gray states in theletter. “We come to this deci-sion with reluctance and deepregret — but the constant de-lays, the past and future costs, the unyielding insistence on fi-nancial and programmaticcommitments which we cannotresponsibly make, and theprospect of future expensiveand debilitating litigation alldemand that we fulfill the Au-try’s vision under different cir-cumstances.”
Councilman José Huizar, whose district includes theSouthwest Museum, said thedecision caught him by sur-prise.
“I was expecting morerounds of negotiation,” he said.“It didn’t make sense to methat there would be a $175-mil-lion commitment to the expan-sion of the Griffith Park siteand that the Autry wouldn’twant to make a commitment to

“Herringbone,” now at LaJolla Playhouse starring apuckishly versatile B.D. Wong,is more of an acting feat than amemorable musical yarn —more showmanship than show.
The work (which had itsNew York premiere in 1982) re-quires Wong, the “Law & Or-
der: Special Victims Unit”regular who gave an indelibleBroadway performance as thegender-scrambling opera divain “M. Butterfly,” to incarnate11 mixed-nuts characters.
The occasion is a kaleido-scopic tale about an 8-year-oldnamed George who becomespossessed by the demonic spir-it of a vaudeville veteran, andif anyone from Actors’ Equityis within earshot, one of yourunion members is being cheat-ed if he’s not earning atleast quadruple the goingrate.
The production — directedby distinguished acting vet-eran Roger Rees and featuringan onstage trio led by pianistDan Lipton, who also fills in as
Thumbs DuBois — puts the fo-cus squarely on its star.
This small and not exactlysmoothly structured story(Tom Cone wrote the bookbased on his play) allows a per-former to multiply before oureyes, and Wong proves himselfexceedingly adept at theatricalmitosis.
Concentrating at first onGeorge and his parents, Arthurand Louise, a Southern familytrying to scrape by in the De-pression, Wong slips in and outof personas with the cunningswiftness of an escape artist.Louise’s rich brother unexpect-edly dies when a casualty of thestock market literally crashesdown on his head, and Arthur

The Wall Project will bemade up of two parts: The“Wall Across Wilshire” will haveas its adjunct the “Wall AlongWilshire — Eastside GalleryWest,” which will have a some-what longer life in front of the5900 Wilshire Blvd. building, re-maining in place from Oct. 17 toNov. 14.
During its short existence, the “across” wall will bisect the“along” wall, with one end ofthe “across” wall ending atLACMA’s outdoor installation“Urban Light.”
The location is “highly sym-bolic,” said Justinian Jampol,
president and founder of theWende Museum. “It connectsdowntown to the ocean, thosetwo cultural anchors to the city. Also, going through an areawhere there are lots of muse-ums and cultural institutions,it’s very reflective of what oc-curred in Berlin, because whenthat line was drawn throughthe city, it divided up the cul-tural institutions.”
Symbolism aside, the loca-tion is not random: Wayne Rat-kovich, owner of the 5900 Wil-shire Blvd. building, sits on thenonprofit Wende Museum’sboard of directors.
From Oct. 23 to Nov. 7, 40
wall panels, all 11 feet tall and 3feet wide, will be painted on thegrounds of the Page Museumat the La Brea Tar Pits in Han-cock Park, adjacent toLACMA. Thirty of those panelswill be used to construct theWall Across Wilshire, and theother 10 will form the WallAlong Wilshire.
The work of graphic de-signer and political illustratorFairey will be part of the“across” wall, along with thework of graffiti artists workingwith ArtStorm LA and artsstudents at the Otis College ofArt and Design, USC, CalArtsand USC. Twitchell and Noir
will paint an additional 10 pan-els for the Wall Along Wilshire, doing most of their work infront of the 5900 building. Thepublic will have the opportuni-ty to observe the artists at workin both locations.
Jampol said the paintingdone on the Berlin Wall circa1989 “was not art, it was a polit-ical act. It was not about show-ing the finished artwork, it wasdynamic.” He said that somany artists wanted to maketheir mark on the Berlin Wallthey often began painting overanother artist’s work before thepaint was dry.
Los Angeles officials had to
sign off on closing Wilshire. “We do this all the time,”
said Councilman Tom La-Bonge, whose district includesthe project site, mentioning arecent NASCAR-related eventat the nearby Petersen Auto-motive Museum that also re-quired the temporary closureof Wilshire. “Wilshire is thebackbone of all the buses in thecity, but . . . having had the ex-perience of this closure nearFairfax for the Petersen, I knewit could happen.”
Los Angeles German Con-sul General Wolfgang Drautz, who moved to Los Angeles justweeks ago, said that the Wall
Project is the largest BerlinWall anniversary commemora-tion that he is aware of outsideof Berlin. Germany plans to do-nate as much as $40,000 to theeffort, which Jampol estimatedcould cost $500,000.
“Look at the map — that weare doing this here on the WestCoast, in California, is symbol-izing that it’s not just a narrow, transatlantic relationship be-tween Washington, D.C., andBerlin,” Drautz said. “We arereally looking forward to anevent where all American citiescan celebrate with us.”
